The NFL game the coach doesn’t exist anymore? Spider 2 Y Banana is the quintessential go to play in any college play book

He has a big name that recruits know.  Half the game is getting players on campus.  If he could get decent coordinators, he'd be fine because I'm guessing he could recruit.  He is not a Lovie Smith who can coach but can't get any decent players.

I don't get this, either!  I've never been a fan of Gruden, mostly because his teams have eaten themselves via his derisive attitude in the lockerroom.  Somehow, he's managed to make himself appear to be some kind of coaching savant from the TV booth.  I don't see him leaving the booth, though.  He makes a crap-ton of money to speak pompously about the game while being highly regarded.  If he gets back on the sideline and fails...

According to Forbes, Gruden is getting paid $6.5 mil a year, back in 2015.

His current gig has little stress, and reasonable hours. If i was him, TN would have to pay me at least double my salary to deal with that mess.

Was Tony Dungy's team that he managed.  Gruden left shortly there after due to lack of performance. UT should totally pay that guy all of their money

Minus the fact that Grudens offense was way ahead of its time, especially with the Raiders. The game hasn't changed much since he's been doing tv. I think Gruden would make a great college coach, just not at Tennessee lol

He would be terrible! I never understood the college fascination for pro coaches. Obviously difference in recruiting to start but now those complex schemes that can't be run in college because you don't get all day every day with the players.

Outside of Pete Carroll, what other "pro coach" has really won at the college level?

I like him in the booth and I liked him as a coach. If I was an NFL GM, I would be very interested in trying to get him to coach again. If I was a college program I would be interested in hiring him for a high but reasonable salary. However, the fact that he's never been a college HC and hasn't been heavily involved in college football in a really, really long time and the fact that he hasn't coached at all in nearly a decade make me believe he is not even close to the best fit.

I don't really believe this report one way or another right now, but I think Tennessee would be much better off with a guy like Chip Kelly (who I think is now better equiped to go into the SEC now that he's had experience in the NFL) or several college coaches for a similar or lesser salary than this.

Also, one of my favorite things about Gruden rumors is that there seems to be evidence that at one point, Gruden has claimed basically ever school would be his dream school.

I agree that Chip Kelly is much more likely to be a homerun hire.

Gruden could turn out to be very good at it, but there is way more unknown about him in that role. The grind of recruiting alone could easily cause him to flame out. He hasn't worked like that in a long, long time.

I think all that has probably been forgotten. at this point, his success at Oregon is not really a major draw either as that was 5 years ago? kids that he'll be recruiting were 11. I'd rather have Kelly if I were Tennessee, but he's going to have his work cut out for him there. if I were Kelly, I'd probably look at the west coast where I already have recruiting inroads and am familiar with the lay of the land. plus, Pac 12, less formidable than sec

The Chicken Parm You Taste So Good Head Coach: Peyton Manning.

Manning takes the job for $15 million/year, works about 20 hours a week, mainly to sign recruits from Indiana and Tennessee.  He even shows up to the games-- not against Bama though.  Hell no.  The heavy lifting is done by your Direct-TV Assistant Headcoach and Offensive Coordinator, Jim Bob Cooter.

Why do we think the guy who has been on the TV for the past decade would be a good coach again? By the way, he makes $6.5 million for broadcasting, likely another 1M for appearances and another 1m for commercials, that sounds pretty cushy to leave to coach in the SEC east.

His agent is the king of "throwing his hat in the ring".  If I had a nickel for every pay raise Gruden received from just "showing interest" in a coaching position for which he has zero interest in, I would have maybe 35 to 40 cents.

He did say he wanted to coach Michigan, but that was before he got his masters at Tennessee. I'm willing to bet he'd consider it. especially as an alumnus.

The same media sources claimed that Hackett was rejected by David Cutcliffe at Duke....which was totally conjecture and click bait. The CFB world ran with it, though, and most media pundits made fun of Michigan being a loser job that got rejected by a mediocre coach...until Harbaugh happened.

I'm currently reading Gruden's book, "Do You Love Football?" He's a great personality. I think he could recruit and win at Tennessee. I think kids would love him. He also used to coach at Tennessee, so he has a familiarity with the program.

As for the system, I think any system can work if it's coached properly.

Frost to Nebraska

Chad Morris to Texas A&M

Joe Moorehead to Florida

Tennessee fails on their first option and hires someone from the Mullen, Schiano, Petrino pool. They would be smart to make Mullen their #1 choice.

nice to get rid of schiano. I'd like to think that'd hurt osu in recruiting. but honestly, they'd probably just fill that spot with the latest and greatest up and comer that recruits just as well, if not better.
