Perhaps I wasn't clear. I clicked the link to today's UV from an external source, but somehow the URL was cut off at the apostrophe, so it took me to said 12 year old UV - hence the "time warp" comment.

09/18/2018 - 5:42pm I linked to UV, but somehow,…

I linked to UV, but somehow, most of the URL got cut off. I ended up in a time warp:

09/18/2018 - 3:51pm He may be referring to the…

He may be referring to the RR years. 2009, for example, Michigan had maybe 5 or 6 guys over 300 lbs, and maybe a dozen under .

09/18/2018 - 7:21am Same here. I didn't even…

Same here. I didn't even recognize 90% of the shows, much less the actors.

And this was just a terrible show. My wife and I watched for about 30 minutes before asking ourselves why we were watching bad acting about apparently good acting on shows we've never heard of. That bit with Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen was so bad.

The finale of the Kids Baking Championship and Monday Night Football were much more compelling.

*googles Darren Criss and Jon Snow*

Nope, don't know who either of them are (apparently, Jon Snow is a fictional character from GoT, which I don't watch).

I think constantly opting out of those particular ads kinda-sorta helped, but with a catch. Now I'm seeing ads for Filipino girls although, to be fair, they are less frequent. I get the feeling that, once I constantly opt out of those, I'll start getting ads for other girls of various ethnicities. Le sigh...

PS - you reminded me that I should check in on my ad preferences again. I turned off "Foreign Language Study" just in case.

EDIT: Also am starting get ads for Ukranians (which are exactly the same as the ones for Russians), as well as for T*nder. Please make it stop, and it's not just because I've been married for 15 years...

09/17/2018 - 6:57pm I agree. If Mercedes-Benz…

I agree. If Mercedes-Benz Stadium (home of the Atlanta Falcons) can do it, why can't Michigan?

They opened to great fanfare with the lowest concessions prices in the country. They just lowered them again.

They sell a 12oz craft beer for $5. That's lower than at most restaurants! They're doing things right over there.

It was honored as Sports Breakthrough of the Year by Sports Business Journal and several professional and collegiate teams and venues across the country have since followed MBS’s lead with dramatic food and beverage pricing adjustments.

During the 2017 Falcons and Atlanta United seasons, average spending on concessions increased at Falcons games by 16 percent per person over the previous season, despite a 50 percent decrease in pricing over the previous season. Data also showed that more than 6,000 Falcons fan per game entered the stadium as much as an hour earlier to take advantage of the options and pricing in the stadium.

“We’re thrilled to see others going this direction because fans win every time another one does, it’s as simple as that and we think the trend will continue,” Atlanta Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay said. “Earlier this year we changed some items our Atlanta fans said they didn’t want and the replacement items have shown a 23 percent higher consumption rate so far. Giving the fans what they want at a fair price will never fail.”

Mercedes-Benz Stadium does not dynamically price food and beverage based on events. All pricing remains the same for any event in the stadium, which includes Super Bowl LIII to be played in the stadium next February.

Also, their water bottle policy:

Guests will not be allowed to bring any type of bottle, can, thermos or beverage container inside of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, fans will be allowed to bring one (1) factory-sealed, non-frozen 500mL (16.9 fl. Oz.) bottle of water (no soda, flavored water or sports drinks.) Parents with small children may bring plastic bottles of formula or milk inside of the stadium.

09/17/2018 - 3:38pm I set my recording to end 30…

I set my recording to end 30 minutes later than scheduled and it STILL cut off the last couple of minutes of the game (well, game clock, I don't actually know how long those last 2-3 minutes actually took).

This is one of the reasons why watching soccer is more and more enjoyable. You generally know exactly how long a match is going to take b/c there are no commercial interruptions during the halves. And they're much more timely with the lengths of their halftimes.

It is absolutely absurd that a football game needs to take close to 4 hours.

This is, of course, a symptom across much of TV. Kids and I are catching up on the American Ninja Warrior Vegas finals (we just watched the first night of Vegas stage 1). I set my xfinity remote to skip ahead 30 seconds every time I press the page up button. I press it 8-9 times every commercial break, and there are something like 4-5 commercial breaks per hour. That means in a one hour broadcast, you're losing 20-25 minutes to commercials. That episode was 2 hours, so there was basically about 45 minutes of commercials. Ridiculous.

I was cited for a noise violation once. I went to court and they lumped all the noise violations together. Judge went through and called names, addresses, and times of the violations. He chuckled when he got to mine because it was issued just before 10pm. None of the others was before midnight.

09/13/2018 - 10:56am Having grown up in the…

Having grown up in the southeast, I know many people who attended Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, etc.

Granted, they don't rank as highly as Michigan, but they can make a similar argument:

"How? I challenged my self [sic] and networked. [Insert large public university here] alumni everywhere and got into my career based on that. Not sure I can replicate it."

Denigrating other schools as sub-par on some imaginary scale of excellence is pointless and, frankly, quite snotty.

09/11/2018 - 1:07pm One thing I'm confused about…

One thing I'm confused about - maybe the article is just worded poorly here.

“(Perles) intervened and the charges were dropped against the coach, but she was forced to return the video, resign and sign a non-disclosure agreement,” according to the court documents. “Upon information and belief, Coach Martha made and retained a copy of the videotape.”

Assuming this means that the victim's coach was "forced to return the video, resign and sign a non-disclosure agreement," but what is the part about charges being dropped against the coach?

Regardless, that the coach who brought this to Perles's attention was basically fired speaks volumes.

09/10/2018 - 5:37pm The only reason msu is…

The only reason msu is likely to be an 8-4 team is that their schedule is pretty favorable (read: crap). Their remaining games against ranked opponents include:

  • @psu
  • vs Michigan
  • vs osu

Their toughest games otherwise are:

  • vs Northwestern
  • @ Nebraska
  • @ Maryland
  • Maybe vs Purdue

And then they play Rutgers, Indiana, and CMU.

09/10/2018 - 12:15pm Agree with this. I'm sure…

Agree with this. I'm sure they could implement technology for these cases, but as it is, you have to assume the ref directly underneath had the best view. Too bad we don't actually get a view of the ref as the ball passes over the upright. I assume it would show the ref looking straight up.

Also, what is the standard here? Does the ball have to appear to be completely inside the upright? So if it passes directly over the upright, it's considered no good?

Aside from the spelling bee part, that's exactly what they did in college football in the 90s...

09/09/2018 - 4:02pm Looking at the upcoming…

Looking at the upcoming schedules, you have to think that msu will win (or at least be heavily favored in) their next 3 games (@Indiana, vs CMU, vs Northwestern).

Then they play @PSU the week before Michigan in EL. Chalk up PSU as a loss and you have a 4-2 sparty squad. Of course, even if they lose to PSU and UM, they only have one more "challenging" game left with osu in EL. Otherwise, the rest of the games are "should wins" for them.

Unless they screw the pooch somewhere, they're an 8-4 (maaaybe 7-5) squad this season.

Michigan has a really tough stretch with Wisconsin, @msu, vs PSU, then @osu to close the season. It's one of those crazy things where an 8-4 season would actually not be THAT bad, although I would absolutely love to beat sparty, nittany, bucky, and bruty (just to keep the theme going)

09/09/2018 - 1:42pm Nah, I'm all for msu…

Nah, I'm all for msu completely imploding by the time we play and beat them.

09/06/2018 - 1:18pm Not sure if you'd call this…

Not sure if you'd call this a bug, per se, but are there only like 10 ads you show on this site? 3 of them are to meet some Eastern European or otherwise scantily clad woman, 2 of them are for underwear, and the rest seem normal.

No matter how many times I click on "report this ad" for the dating ones, in particular, with every reason except "covering content", they keep coming back. Make the madness stop. I've not yet resorted to using an ad blocker and I prefer not to.

EDIT: Oh, never mind, I see it's been addressed by others just a couple posts above this one. Guess I should've scrolled to the last page of comments before posting. Point still stands and add my voice to the chorus.

Good to know.  A guy I work with is retired FBI.  His advice is to never speak to an investigator (local or fed) without a lawyer present.

This is good advice. The Stuff You Should Know podcast guys were talking about Miranda rights and mentioned that there is definitely a school of thought that you should NEVER speak to law enforcement (particularly FBI) without a lawyer present, even if you are innocent.

08/24/2018 - 3:36pm The initial news about this…

The initial news about this came out some months (2-3, maybe) ago. New details with this article, in particular, is the original story that was quashed by Engler.

I'm also appalled and saddened at the comments by unviersity mouthpiece Emily Guerrant. I don't envy her position, but it is weak justification for why Engler, himself, pushed to have the issue changed.

08/24/2018 - 3:23pm Are you saying that because…

Are you saying that because teachers are generally under contract and/or represented by labor unions? Or just as a general matter of course? If the former, I would agree.

Speaking as someone who has spent his entire career in corporate America, many of those same actions described in the OP are also fireable offenses, and without the need for "due process" because, as white collar middle management, I am employed without a contract in an at-will state.

08/24/2018 - 9:23am These are the kinds of…

These are the kinds of questions I wonder about. I need to replace my ancient snowboard helmet and have been looking at MIPS models. Seems mostly limited to motorsports, biking, ski/snowboard, and skate (board/blade).

Looks like the Vicis helmet has an alternative to MIPS in its design, although it aims to achieve similar outcomes:

What kind of safety innovations do these helmets have? Does hole size/shape matter? What about the cut-outs like on the Speedflex (which I assume are to dampen impact, but that's an assumption)? Basically, what do all those holes, lines, ridges, cutouts do for safety? What's on the inside that makes them better (or less so) from a safety perspective?

For the record, according to VT's helmet lab, the Vicis is the top-rated helmet on the market (lower score is better).

The NFL's helmet ratings agree on Vicis, but have some differences with some models like the Speedflex, likely due to different test/rating methodologies:

08/23/2018 - 4:54pm I can't even imagine the…

I can't even imagine the number of times I would've been fired from my job had I:

  • gone to a strip club on a business trip with colleagues and prospects (this sort of thing is explicitly against our code of conduct)
  • Perpetrated any kind of discovered domestic violence charges/arrests would be grounds for termination. The same can be said for osu:
  • ordered and received sex toys to the office
  • Had sex with a colleague at the office

08/23/2018 - 2:02pm Sorry, but I have to object…

Sorry, but I have to object. In fact, I vehemently object. There are too many problems with his comment, but a few select responses:

  • "a PC standard meaningful only to an academic audience and the PC public". It's not just about academia, but the whole movement (call it #metoo, call it something else). When you have Nassar, newly-publicized Catholic church scandals, executives left and right resigning or being fired for conduct, this is a big deal nationally. Is the entire "public," then, considered PC? Other than the clear-thinking osu/meyer supporters? Of course, he goes on and on and on and on ad nauseum about the PC public and academia being the root cause of the whole situation, so I won't rehash the other 2/3 of his comments.
  • "giving Zach Smith, an alleged wife abuser, a second chance." I believe that would be second, third, and fourth chances.
  • "It is still not clear, even now, that Zach Smith abused his wife. Or that his wife did nothing to incite him." It should not matter if Courtney Smith incited her husband. Abuse is never justified.
  • "Zach Smith’s visit to a strip club, his over-extended credit card account, his purchase of sex toys. All of these are perfectly legal and have absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. Zach Smith’s private life is not the business of his employer." This is patently false. If I ordered such items and had them sent to work and it was discovered by my employer, I'd likely be fired. If I took a client or prospective client to a strip club while on a company-paid business trip and it was discovered, I guarantee you that I'd be fired. We have annual corporate compliance trainings and I bet you $100 that Smith had to go through that kind of stuff. He engaged in many fireable offenses b/c he mixed his personal and private lives to such an extent.

08/22/2018 - 5:21pm I don't know enough about…

I don't know enough about the former situation to comment, but the latter just seems like a timely response and unfortunate that it's in the midst of all this urban meyer stuff. The Danny Davis story came out, what, 2 days ago? This is practically lightspeed compared to what we've been seeing at msu and osu.

However, after the Iggles carved up opposing defenses through the playoffs last season with their (not always) RPO-based offense (seriously, everything was RPO to the announcers), I do expect to see more RPO-type concepts in college football this season.

As to how similar they will be to what Michigan will run, who knows.
