Look at any highly-trained athlete. This happens to many athletes who did football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, softball, etc. As someone said, they are used to eating a certain amount to go with all the training and exercise, but when they stop the exercise and don't stop the eating, you get big. It may be more apparent in football just because the athletes are already so big, but it happens to athletes in many sports.

Sidenote: I know a former collegiate distance runner who ran at 140-145 lbs. He is now close to 200 because he quit running, but didn't quit eating so much.

My wife's idea - get our daughter a manual transmission vehicle when she learns to drive. It's good to know how, it's cool, and it significantly lessens the likelihood of friends borrowing or thieves stealing the car.

My idea - get her a used manual transmission subaru impreza because of the AWD. Downside is that this means base model or high performance models only. Also, I'm told that the manual transmission in base model subarus are terrible.

What will probably happen - I give her my 2003 infiniti in a few years when she is driving and I get myself a new car. OR I get the manual transmission car now, give it to her in a few years, and get myself a new car then.

Oh man, today is Tuesday. I thought it was still Monday, lol..

Crazy that the game will not be nationally televised. I can't actually find any broadcast information for this game. Anyone know?

01/15/2019 - 8:22am As long as we're complaining…

As long as we're complaining about the OP, how about a link?  (also, hint - almost the entire OP is a quote).

There are really only three top candidates right now: Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia.

We'll likely have a more detailed debate come Sunday, after Michigan plays at Wisconsin, Virginia plays at Duke and Tennessee finishes up home games against Arkansas and Alabama, but for now, it goes to Michigan.

The Wolverines arguably have been the nation's most consistent team since the start of the season, with only two of their 15 wins being decided by single digits. They have won 31 of their past 32 games dating to last season, the lone loss coming in the national championship game against Villanova.

Despite all that, they haven't moved to No. 1 at all during that stretch ... until now.

For the record, UVA also plays AP #9 VT tomorrow night, in addition to Duke on Saturday. UVA wins both those games, I don't think it matters what Michigan does against Wisco. UVA will be the new #1.

UVA and VT play tonight. I thought today was still Monday. Yikes.

01/14/2019 - 3:02pm Honestly, I feel like you…

Honestly, I feel like you can throw the top 4 teams in a bag and pick one. Duke and Tennessee both have what I would consider "good" losses to Gonzaga and Kansas, respectively.

Of course, if you believe the fancystats rankings, Michigan is 3 to NET, 6 to Kenpom, 6 to Sagarin, and 5 to the Massey Composite.

The kicker is that they were going to give away the trip to EVERYONE who successfully made the kick. Old man weather was on their side, further preventing anyone from getting close.

01/13/2019 - 9:55am They have some special…

They have some special editions which are pretty pricey. And let's be real - some of their beers are barely average, but they also have some really good beers. Green Line and 312 are perfectly acceptable beers, and the more limited runs like Matilda are excellent. I've only had a couple of their Bourbon county beers - one i liked, one I didn't. I like their Kolsch. Not a fan of Honker's or the IPA (or IPAs in general). I could do without most fruit and sour beers, including Goose Island's. Many people like Juliet, but not a fan of sours :)

On topic, the snowy conditions made it darn near impossible.

01/08/2019 - 12:19pm Of course, there is also the…

Of course, there is also the school of thought that the SUV craze is really a self-fulfilling prophecy. They can be made cheaply, sold at higher margins, have an advantageous CAFE classification, and play right into the American perception that "bigger is better." So yeah, let's market the crap out of these things, change the American mindset about what they need (marketing and advertising works, folks!), and the sedan will die out.

The Canyonero is probably an actual SUV at this point.

Maybe the death of the sedan could be the rebirth of the actual wagon. I'm not talking the now-CUV Outback, but cars like the Volvo V60/V90, MB E-class, Audi Avants and AllRoads, Buick TourX, VW Golf Wagon. Even Jag and Porsche have wagons these days!

More wagons = good, imo.

On Topic, if I were to buy a car tomorrow, it would be a Buick Regal TourX Essence trim in Blue.

01/02/2019 - 12:00pm Wow, that's crazy, but true…

Wow, that's crazy, but true.

I'm sure ESPN and FOX are pushing hard for these. Kinda makes some small measure of sense that Chicago is mentioned, given that the pinstripe bowl hasn't been an utter disaster. If they get a decent Big Ten team to play in Soldier Field in December when the Bears are on the road, that could actually be not terrible. Or Wrigley or Comiskey (sorry, US Cel.. oops, Guaranteed Rate Field).

Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Greenville, and another one in the Phoenix metro area? I guess the Carolinas want more than just the one bowl game, Arizona wants to overtake California for number of bowl games, and Chicago wants in on the northern exposure.

I think we're at 15 states with bowl games right now. States which used to have bowl games, but no longer, include Ohio, Kentucky, Nevada, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, and Arkansas (although many of them were decades ago).

01/02/2019 - 10:33am It looks like there are only…

It looks like there are only 8 teams which entered a bowl game with fewer than 7 wins. That would've removed only 4 bowl games. Of course, the other issue is with conference agreements, meaning that many have to stretch to 6 wins in order to fulfill their agreements.

Overall, if we got rid of 10 bowl games, that would be fine with me.

Just for fun, graph depicting number of bowl games per year going back to 1969. It had long-ish periods of relative stability (from 83 to 96, there were anywhere from 17 to 19 bowl games), but around 1997 is when the growth in number of bowl games really started taking off. 1996 saw 18 bowl games, 2000 had 25, 2002 had 28. Then in 2006, it went up to 32, then 34, 35, 39, and peaked in 2015 and 2016 with 41 (including CoFoPof).

One, anyone that tweets or communicates with recruits is an idiot.

fixed it for you

Two, can you blame folks for thinking extra benefits?  Bama has poached our top recruit in 3 of the last 5 years (Hill, Ekiyor, & Harris).  Add to that major leans in Wilson with UGA who's a former Saban assistant, Herbert to Miami, Treadwill to Ole Miss, etc.  It's hard to not think that as a traditional blue blood strong recruiting program who always starts strong and finishes weak and/or looses guys and the southern schools that do the opposite.

Alabama, Georgia, and Miami as just as blue blood (maybe not Miami, historically, although the young kids would think that, what with their 80s and 2000's runs) as Michigan - Alabama, especially. Honestly, even without bagmen, I could see them getting these recruits to flip.

Ole Miss is the thing that is not like the others and I think the bagman theory was all but proven there.

12/11/2018 - 1:09pm So Michigan recruiting does…

So Michigan recruiting does lag behind teams like nd, osu, Hopkins, and Maryland, although ahead of PSU and Rutgers, at this point.

Looking at the link, the other schools with "better" (i.e., ranked) and more talent (at this point) include Duke, UVA, Georgetown,UNC, Penn, and Princeton. Judging solely by recruiting, Michigan could certainly be competing for a conference tournament berth annually. Things are looking up?

Just for the sake of conference completeness:

5* No. 15 Owen Murphy, A, Avon Old Farms (Conn.) / SweetLax
5* No. 16 Blake Rodgers, LSM/D, Bullis (Md.) / VLC – PG ’19
4* No. 43 Tim Marcille, G, Gonzaga (D.C.) / Madlax
4* No. 68 ^Jack Ruddy, LSM/D, Hun (N.J.) / Leading Edge
4* No. 93 Jacob Angelus, A/M, Paul VI (Va.) / Blackwolf
4* No. 97 Hunter Jaronski, LSM/D, Academy of the New Church (Pa.) / Duke’s LC

4* No. 24 Connor Whalen, LSM, Bishop Shanahan (Pa.) / Freedom
4* No. 27 Brett Mallee, LSM, La Salle (Pa.) / Big 4 HHH
4* No. 29 Kelan Duff, D, Culver (Ind.) / True, SweetLax
4* No. 70 Logan McNaney, G, Salisbury (Conn.) / SweetLax
4* No. 72 ^Michael Mines, M, Torrey Pines (Calif.) / West Coast Starz, RC
4* No. 74 Danny Maltz, A, Riverside (Va.) / SweetLax
4* No. 75 Jack Brennan, A, Irondequoit (N.Y.) / SweetLax
4* No. 88 Conor Calderone, F/O, Smithtown West (N.Y.) / Laxachusetts

RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS (have no ranked commits at this point)

12/11/2018 - 12:22pm So it looks like Michigan…

So it looks like Michigan must win a minimum of 2 conference matches in order to even sniff the BTT, based on last season's results (Rutgers and PSU were both 2-3, but RU had the tiebreaker). Tough slate, with every other conference team ranked. I guess best chances would be the last 3.

I'll have to put that Marquette match on the calendar. It might be a nice day to drive up from Chicago to watch our Wolverines (for the first time ever!).

A football championship would register 100 on my whole number scale of Michigan sports fandom. Basketball championship would rate a 99. Every other sport would be somewhere in the mid-high 90s. I was somehow ecstatic when Michigan won the softball championship a decade+ ago, and I had never even watched college softball before in my life.
