OT: How many stars are you and at what?

Submitted by Marvin on
I am a borderline 5* at grilling Mahi Mahi, which I just discovered tonight.

i'm your guy.  probably a fringe 5* on some services due to the rapidity of the yards of scat i can move when properly game planned.

i missed the camps and am generally unrated in other areas of life.  my family has a bias on my behalf but any objective observer would heavily discount any claims by them about my abilities, like a four or five fakes out of five.

My mahi mahi is always 5* because sound vide anything is 5*. But lately I'm 5* at getting sick (and it's pissing me off) viral flu like bug last week. Proceeded to get over that to go to a family gathering past weekend where half the family, myself included, got a stomach virus, which then led to me getting strep throat. Modern medicine a hell of a drug though. Out of the office all week to return today to I'm sure a nearly empty office.

5-star at throwing money at whatever my wife and kid want, but not at myself.  Probably generic high 3-star at everything else...  I should do more for me, but I don't really care so long as they have what they want.

2-star at watching sports like I used to, pre-wife, pre-kid.

I am a five-star amateur chef, which still leaves me looking up at actual rankings in chef circles, but I am a fairly good cook, if I do say so.

I am probably a four-star beer snob - just ask anyone whose been at the same party with me.

Zero-star blog moderator - working hard to get into the rankings there.

at any trivia games. Got a crazy memory and read a lot.

2* husband (just ask my ex) but I think I've turned it around and become a 4* dad to my 3 kids. My son is UM4LIFE which makes me proud.

...but only with the classics, Beethoven's 9th, Carmina, Verdi Requiem, etc. Give me something challenging (think Janacek, Bernstein, Ives) and only a few weeks to prepare--I'm up on stage at Hill lip synching like Mariah.

4* - Griller and cook.  I recently discovered the amazing flavor of toasting cumin seeds in a pan and then grinding them to season mexican dishes.

4.5* - Civilization V player.  Still can't beat deity level but I have won on immortal difficulty.

2* - Doing my job well.  Peter Principle yo.

IMHO, that is the best way to make a steak. Toss it in a hot cast iron skillet with some butter. Once you have a good sear on it, put the whole pan in the oven. Then just let it cook up to the correct temperature. Use a digital meat thermometer if you are uncomfortable with judging by touch. It is tough to screw it up this way. Worst case scenario is that it ends up a little over cooked if you leave it in too long. If you want to practice with cheaper meat, you could get sirloin cut extra thick and then cut it into filet sized cuts. Don’t be afraid to jump into using a cast iron skillet. Best bet is to get a good used one. You can get a new one and season it yourself but that takes some dedication. I did that with mine and I love it now. I used a palm sander to smooth out the roughness of a new lodge pan (I’ve been called stupid or crazy for having done this). Then I did a number of seasonings in the oven with it oiled. Now it is basically a non-stick pan but without the concern of the Teflon coming off and the added iron. Once you get used to it, this cooking method can be used for thick pork chops and other meats.

I'm a 5 star diet coke drinker, 4 star Whirlyball player (requires no actual human speed, just great hand-eye and a killer instinct), 3 star cat box cleaner, 2 star email returner, 1 star dishwasher filler (just ask my husband) and 0 star mother-in-law ass kisser.

...WIDE variance depending on scouting sources (good combine scores from the daughters, very high with the nieces / nephews, but real boat anchor scoring from the latest wife in the Husband role.) I'm thinking if I focus on the Dad role the Wife scoring jumps immensely. I cook, do my own laundry AND dishes...the farting is KILLING me though...maybe if I just get 1% better each day, she'll notice...[crosses fingers...and clenches]...I feel more thoughtful already.

Low 2 star at being a husband.

Trying to be a high 4 star at being a dad, but more like a low 3 star.

Walk on at my job, but I do the dirty work so I earned a scholarship.
