OT: What is the highest moment of your fandom?

Submitted by sarto1g on

We've got some time to kill before season previews start....

Good Friday, March 2013.  Drinking Bud heavies with my mom at a townie bar in the middle of nowhere.  Trey Burke hits the shot and Michigan subsequently beats Kansas in OT. A flurry of text messages and phone calls that dont say anything but AHHHHH.

So, what is your happiest sports moment?

The number of stars in that game and the back and forth drama of the game, combined with the importance of it, coupled with the "out of nowhere" ending surely make it one of UM's greatest basketball moments.

Illinois had just destroyed us twice during the regular season, including Glen Rice's senior day, so no one was super confident either... I chatted with Dennis Rodman at a local bar before the game and I thought that was going to be highlight of the weekend. Boy was i wrong!

The sheer insanity of the last 3 minutes of that game was exhausting & exhilerating. Never have I experienced such a rollercoaster of emotions in such a short amount of time. Was my second game as a freshman of UofM, hugged a countless number of strangers and chanted "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" all the way back to the dorms.

UTL1 was cool, but that punt return was the most euphoric Michigan Stadium has ever been for me.  Probably because I was a student at the time and the whole student section was like a big mosh pit with people jumping up and down.

A game winning drive in a defensive slugfest  and the classless Woody Hayes  meltdown later encapsulates, in  my view,  the difference between Michigan & OSU.One program has a tradition of integrity and the other has a documented history of cheating and a fan base that deifies the cheaters....A second great moment was when Bo went for 2 with a 20-0 lead late in the game as a FU pay back to Dr.StrangeHayes classless decision to go for 2 in 1968 while up 50-14.

We stayed in the stands and just watched the post game ceremonies and stared at the scoreboard; basking in the glow of the national title

I'm a Canadian Forces member who was posted to the US for 4 years in Colorado, when they found out I was a huge fan of College Football, specifically Michigan, they got me tickets to see Air Force Falcons play Nevada Wolf Pack.  I went in uniform (as the USAF members were in uniform as well), and everyone treated me with such respect and curiosity.  Most wondered if I was lost (lol), others amazed that a Canadian follows NCAA football.

One fan there was a Michigan grad and we talked about UM for a good chunk of the game, asked for my email.  We swapped stories back and forth for a few months and he asked for my address to send something to me.

I recieved a care package from him with UM flags, patches, some clothing, books, and even a jersey and helmet (not an actual game helmet, just one you can buy online).  He was happy to share it with me and has since become a great friend that even 5 years later we still talk every week or so.

While I've been a fan of UM since I was knee high (grandfather and uncle are grads) this experience is easily my highest fandom moment.

Another play that is symbolic of what Michigan football is all about. The undressing of the higher rated PSU team in 97 was a Top 5 favorite Mich win for me.I believe neither player ever played again.Yes I realize that would be a targeting penalty today.

We are of like mind.  That hit is and may always be the hardest hit of all time in football because I challenge anyone to show me another hit that obliterated a 260+ pound man running at full speed in the opposite direction like that one.  All the other "best hit ever" candidates are guys lighting up little guys like our boy Vincent Smith or other receivers or running backs.  Taylor destroyed a giant of a man running at full speed.  So violent it's borderline disturbing to watch, and shocking that the only thing that came from it is that neither played football again.  Stunned it wasn't way worse than that.

I watched it alone. But I was on my knees begging God to let us win this game. I told him I would never ask for anything from him ever again (and till this day, I have held my word).

Counterpoint to that was the MSU game in 2015. I smoked two cigarettes at one time and didn't say a word for an hour and a half.

1997 OSU. It was the first season I attended most of the games (missed only ND, mostly paid for it using lawnmowing money). I sank all of my birthday money into a student ticket that I bought from a couple that needed to make rent that month. I sat in the student section for the first time ever.

It was, obviously, amazing.

Coming in a solid second was the 2002 hockey regional, culminating in that incredible 3rd period plus postgame celebration against Denver. Thanks to a couple of fellow USCHO folks I had center ice seats.

I think I'm weird. I read everyone's post and they are all positives. My highest moment of fandom was Fandom Badge II. That was the coldest, worst game of my life and I stayed every second and made my soaking wet shivering fiance stay the whole time too.

Fandom Badge II is the 2009(?) Northwestern game where it rained/sleeted/snowed the entire game right? I don't know that I've ever had a more miserable sporting experience. I had to stand in a hot shower when I got home for half an hour to feel like I was warm again

Haha! Yes that is the game.

OP doesn't ask for happiest fandom moment, just the highest ... i figure my fandom couldn't be higher than sticking through that game and that season. I mean obviously the cool memories are there, specifically the Wisconsin game that same season but nothing made me realize I was a diehard like sitting through that crap.

Grbac to Howard was my #1, so I'll add a sneaky second.  Dreisbach to Hayes last-second TD to secure the victory against Tiki Barber's UVa Cavaliers.   That was a dreadfully boring, tedious, and frustrating game for 3 quarters.   I let out a visceral scream, jumped up and tangled my hand in the ceiling fan.   Pure, unadultered joy.

Basketball:   Burke against KU, Higgins against Illinois, and Robinson's FT's to secure the 89 Championship were top contenders.   My sneaky hoops moment:  James Voskuil's clutch floating jumper in the lane during one of the Fab 5 tourney runs against ?????.   Can't remember the opponent, but I went absolutely bat-shit crazy after that shot.  Pelinka had a few of those moments, too.

The win against ND in the first night game. Staying in the stadium to watch D-Rob do his Gameday interview on the field. Going home and watching that interview, and hearing D-Rob say, "These are the greatest fans in the world. Look at them, they won't leave." And knowing I was one of those fans.

I'm with you on the Kansas shot. Actually heard it on the radio in my friend's car at a chick-fil-a drive thru. I screamed. He was horrified. The drive thru lady was confused as heck. Texted my mom and she said she also screamed and scared the crap out of my dad.

Was on a pay phone in the Florida keys with my mom in 1989. We were on a youth group trip, and I was able to listen as Rumeal Robinson dropped two free throws to win the National Title!

So many good ones on this thread to choose from.  #1 for me has to be 1997 OSU-Michigan and the top moment would be Woodson taking the punt back.  The Rose Bowl had more consequences, but nothing tops being in the Big House on that late November afternoon when we were the best in the land.  I was a sophomore and it was my first OSU game.  I still have some of the grass from the field that I took.

After the first few tragic years of our baptism into RR's version of the spread offense, Denard's performance in the UConn game was an eye opener. Not only could he run like the wind (for nearly 200 yards that day), he completed almost 90% of his passes. Wow! Unfortunately, the continued pounding he took running the ball game after game soon took its toll, especially on his passing. But what an electrifying start to the 2010 year he had. Still, he's one of my all-time favorite Michigan Men.

A couple moments are up there. The Trey Burke three was pretty good. Chanting "It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine" after multiple exciting wins over Notre Dame is also up there (and doing the chicken dance after that last win). But in a way, nothing made me prouder to be a Michigan man than to see the team in Rome this summer. Experiences like bonding as a team, having practices, and having those experiences of learning other culture and history (and meeting the pope) is The Michigan Difference. Hearing from the team on that trip really made me feel like we are the leaders and best. In the end, those life skills that these guys are taught is what Michigan Football is all about. Having fun together, working hard together, and winning together.

After living through the end of the Howe era, the Dead Wings, and the Harkness Darkness and then promise with Steve Yzerman's rookie year to becoming the best captain in Detroit, maybe anywhere... I just unexpectedly lost it when the clock struck zero in 1997... then there was Vlady's tragic accident which was like ice water dumped on the euphoria... a year later the Wings won again and Vlady held the cup after being wheeled out on the ice brought me to tears again.

The 1993 Rose Bowl. Only because the lowest moment in my young life to that point was the 1992 Rose Bowl when I cried into the brown and orange shag carpet in the basement of our East Kentwood home for what seemed like hours after the Huskies beat us badly.

The actual low point of my fandom was the 2006 Michigan v. Ohio State game when we got screwed by the late hit call on Troy Smith which I still say was complete bullshit. I don't care what anybody says. That was a non-call at best.

That was only slightly more miserable than last years "WE STOPPED HIM" non-call in the game where I literally set down my beer in front of all of my future in-laws in my own basement and without saying a word walked out the front door and went on a walk through the neighborhood alone occasionally screaming WE STOPPED HIM!!

The Devin Gardner "go for two" game was the first time I had stayed with my future in-laws at thier house in Atlanta. I stood up while the throw was in mid air. I collapsed face down in the middle of the living room as the ball fluttered harmlessly to noone in particular and I lied motionless for a while only to bring up my hand and waive my future wife over to me while saying "hug me." And bless her without a word she laid down next to me and hugged me in front of her whole shocked family.

Great times.

What I was able to witness first-hand:

UTL I - Never heard the stadium so loud as it was that night after Denard made miracle after miracle happen in the fourth quarter. When Roundtree made that catch, the whole stadium just went bonkers. Bad collapses by both defenses at the end of the game, but it was one of those "what the hell did I just see" kind of nights.

UM-OSU 2011 - Didn't matter that it was a mediocre OSU team. They never complained about beating up on shitty Michigan teams. Take these wins where you can get them.

2013 National Title Game - tough ending to watch, but it sure showed what a Beilein-coached team can do. When Albrecht went on his unstoppable first half run, it just felt like destiny that Michigan was going to win that game. And then Luke motherfucking Hancock happened. Still, I could not believe that Michigan was in a national title game. And I was there to witness it.

At least I got the lowest moment out of the way early -- first ever game in-person just so happened to be September 1, 2007.

1. 04 NBA Finals - I grew out my hair because of Ben Wallace. I was in HS at the time and this team really influenced me and my view of sports. 2. 03 OSU - John Navarre was one of my favorite M players of all time. He took a lot of crap from the media and fanbase. Finally got to see him beat OSU. Who would have know that this would be our second tonlast victory over OSU :( 3. Trey Burke vs Kansas - comeback seemed to happen so fast. And for some reason I knew the shot was going in.

USA vs Algeria, Landon Donovan goal. Never have I been so down and depressed, and then suddenly just this ridiculous jubilation. I ran like 12 damn laps around my house.

Honorable mentions: Trey Burke 3-ball, Shinsuke Nakamura beating John Cena at Smackdown.

Duke coming back from 22 down to beat Maryland in the 2001 Final Four.

I was 14, watching on a tiny TV in the basement at a bar mitvah party in suburban Maryland, surrounded by Terp fans of all ages. I remember being nauseated and near tears in the first half, and then gradually becoming more and more ecstatic. There was one other Duke fan at the party and he and I screamed and jumped up and down and all the Maryland fans grimly went back upstairs.

This one is easy: my freshman year at Michigan, sitting in the endzone for the 1985 Ohio State game, Harbaugh throws to John Kolesar for a 77-yard touchdown as he gets hit in the backfield.  To this day the most transcendent and euphoric moment I've ever experienced in Michigan Stadium.
