Bingo, along with the associated pressure to bring in money.

Me, too.  I've been applying the "can't teach an old dog new tricks" mentally and clinging to other programming languages, but Python is just too pervasive for me to ignore any longer.   No excuses not to learn from this fantastic UM online opportunity.

08/09/2018 - 11:55am Your situation is all too…

Your situation is all too common in the modern postsecondary education landscape.   Continue fighting the good fight, educating our future leaders, and performing an underappreciated, yet societally beneficial, service.

08/09/2018 - 11:45am Are you seriously shitting…

Are you seriously shitting me?    Just take 60 seconds to explore the amazing research spearheaded by UM faculty.   Society has benefitted.  IMMENSELY.   And you want to know what what's more amazing?   Societally beneficial teaching and research continues to be performed despite perpetual cutbacks in state and federal aid.

I'm proud of you for developing your client pool without any government aid.   You are a true hero.  But please know that university professors are also societal heroes for devoting their lives to teaching, research, and service.

I see an interesting retirement activity on my horizon.  Thanks, UM, for this awesome alum benefit.

08/09/2018 - 11:37am As a university professor, I…

As a university professor, I can calculate my hourly wage for you if you'd like it.  I now get paid well, but I also toiled in academic obscurity for over 12 years (Undergrad, Masters, PhD, Postdoc) getting no pay, or paid like absolute shit with limited benefits as an indentured graduate research assistant, teaching assistant, and postdoc researcher.  Between teaching, advising students, writing proposals, performing research, publishing manuscripts, peer reviewing manuscripts, developing new courses,  writing books, serving on proposal review teams, university and community service, presenting findings at conferences, my typical 60-80 hour work week is certainly an easy life.  I also give a shit about effectively teaching and mentoring my students, and that is a time consuming endeavor.

I hate that I have to write this stuff to justify my existence, but I guess I have to be more aggressive advocating for my profession.    Are there shitty university educators? Absolutely.   Just like there are shitty individuals working in <insert your profession>.

I turned 16 and needed to be driven to basketball practice.  My dad looked at me, tossed me the keys to the Chevy S-10 pickup truck, and said "drive yourself".   The issue?  I had never driven a manual transmission before.   I figured it out quickly.   Best parental tactic ever.  My dad said afterwards that it was probably easier to learn by myself rather than having him looming over me and critiquing every little mistake.

Also, I miss manual transmissions.

EDIT:  Hey, I get to use the edit function!   This was obviously not my first time behind the wheel That occurred when I was 12 or 13 and my dad let me drive country back roads.   I'm doing the same with my son this summer.

Here's a gentle hint.    Instead of composing a rage-filled post with toxic words like "whoring out", be more diplomatic.   This post could be recast in a much more diplomatic way that would not immediately turn off the masses and stimulate a genuine discussion.

My take:  I'm happy as hell that we have generous donors to subsidize our coaching salaries.   Similar to the many esteemed professorships at the university.

Your idea of a GoFundMe campaign to liberate our coaches from the shackles of named coaching positions is laughable.   You realize how an endowment works, right?   Good luck with your 100 million dollar GoFundMe effort to perpetually spin off a cool 10 million dollars per year for head coaches.

07/05/2018 - 1:01pm This, exactly.

My parents…

This, exactly.

My parents live on a beautiful northwoods lake in the middle of nowhere.   The quiet is blissful and reinvigorates the soul, but not from late June through late July.    The 4th of July doesn't exist any longer - it's a month-long cacophony of ear-splitting, house-jarring explosions.   I stayed at their place last Friday and Saturday night (JUNE 29 and 30) - worst sleep I've gotten in years.  Scared the living shit out of me.  My dog was luckily not with me.   We hated visiting my parents near the 4th of July when my kids were young.  It sucked.

I loved to light off simple fireworks on the 4th of July as a kid.   But the transition to "this firework's noise level is 11 on a 10 scale" (insert Spinal Tap footage), and "we're going to light this shit off from 10:30 pm - 2 am.  Every.  Single.  Night." is past annoying.

No.  I don't see why this particular situation peeves people at all.   It actually makes perfect logical sense to me, even as a Michigan fanatic.   He got a great coaching job offer at a P5 school immediately after graduating.   That rarely happens, so I congratulate him and wish him a long and fruitful coaching career.  I hate Ohio State as much as any other UM fan and hope he goes winless against UM, but I'm not peeved by this situation at all.   I'm frankly puzzled why this news is so upsetting to you.

06/27/2018 - 3:11pm Congrats to Andrew.   Not…

Congrats to Andrew.   Not sure why this peeves people.  He jumped at the opportunity for more playing time at OSU as a scholarship grad transfer, then grabs a B1G coaching position right after graduation?   Great opportunities for him.

06/26/2018 - 7:12pm Water.   I like to stare at,…

Water.   I like to stare at, be near, be in, be on, and hear the sound of water.    Sun reflecting off a northwoods lake.   A babbling brook.   Lolling in a boat while waves gently lap at the sides.   Water is my stress elixir.   It is the one common mind-cleansing denominator in my life.

"Let's try to stay on topic and have a discussion"

Hmmmm....when the topic is presented as "Recruit X is laughably not qualified to even be considered a Michigan football recruit", that elicits a certain instinctive response from many of us.    Not to mention that you've already proven to be a raging asshole of epic proportions in previous posts.   Discussion?   OK.  Let's have one.  The Michigan staff apparently thinks very highly of Joey Velazquez.   I will support this offer and this young man if he chooses to suit up for my beloved Wolverines.   Will he be play meaningful minutes for Michigan?  Time will tell.   But I like Don Brown's instincts a whole helluva lot more than yours.

06/20/2018 - 3:23pm The construction season is…

The construction season is so contracted in the U.P.   Seriously, snow can legally fall any time after mid-September.   It's incomprehensible how some of these bridges could be repaired during the current warm season.

Also, warning to the ATV/ORV community:  many recreational trails are closed due to washouts.  Very dangerous conditions from Houghton to Calumet on some trails.   Most boating on local waters and beaches are also closed for the time being.   This news really stinks during the peak summer tourist season.    Tourism is top dog up here, so I really hope the infrastructure gets fixed soon.   I can't imagine if the some of the main snowmobile trails are out this winter.

That was an epic, historic flooding event.   I appreciate this call to lend support, either financially or with your hands.

It looks like the main highway artery (US 41) is passable, but plenty of bridges out on local roads.    I hope this region gets the support that is needed to make quick repairs before winter sets in.
