I did.   He destroyed a few people.

Exactly.   We played with an extremely thin DL and curb stomped them.   I thought Taylor was going to run for 200+ tonight, but we managed to contain things until the game got out of hand.   Let's hope Solomon gets his sea legs and we don't get knicked up further against MSU.  That bye week can't come too soon.

10/13/2018 - 11:14pm Agree.   You go for it on…

Agree.   You go for it on 4th down near midfield with a 21-7 deficit.   Horrible coaching decision by Chryst that sealed the game for us.

Extremely well played.    Phantom +1 for you.

I'll take an unsportsmanlike penalty after a pick-six to go up 31-7 against Wisconsin any day.  So, yeah.  We really didn't have ANY penalties.   No holds.   No defensive PI.   Great disciplined play tonight.

10/13/2018 - 11:00pm What's this about our DL…

What's this about our DL being extremely thin tonight?   We got punched a few times early, but Hornibrook was so uncomfortable.

Jesus.  Don't panic.  And understand the new redshirt rules before posting this.   Can't we just bask in the epic Wisconsin thrashing without worrying about Milton's redshirt status?

10/07/2018 - 11:34pm Through 6 games last year,…

Through 6 games last year, DPJ had 7 catches for 94 yards, 0 TD's.

Through 6 games this year, Bell has 3 catches for 80 yards, 2 TD's.

Collins did not play much in the first 6 games last year.  Recall that Crawford got a lot of run early in the season.

Bell's 2 TD's are impressive, but I think he's trending toward a typical freshman receiver year fulfilling a fairly limited role snagging a few receptions and flashing some potential.

And, yes.  2018 QB play >>> 2017 QB play.   That's a big deal.
Don't get me wrong.  I'm also impressed by Bell's abilities and think he's a nice pickup.  He's earned the right to be on the field this year. He should be a solid contributor.

Bagpipes.   The pep band bagpipes were epic.

Otherwise, we hit about 4 or 5 posts or crossbars, had 50 official shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.   Vermont's goalie stood on his head, and Vermont's offense capitalized on their golden chances.    Hopefully early season cobwebs will shake off quickly.

Impressive haul.

This news made me ponder the role of outsized endowments in today's academic environment.   I recently listened to Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast on this topic (maybe Season 2?).  He's not a fan of large university endowments, especially at schools that already have sizable endowments accrued.  I don't agree 100% with Malcolm's view on this topic, but I think he's right to question how that money gets allocated, how smaller universities could probably use those funds to significantly change the trajectory of their university more effectively than the already "well-endowed" universities, and the insane endowment arms race that has blossomed in recent years.

I sincerely hope this latest infusion of cash positively alters the typical UM student financial aid package.   That should be priority number one.

Watched this scenario unfold live at the game, and my wife and I both agree that the ref seemed to be instructing Bush to get off the field.   Devin took a few steps toward the sideline, then SMU snapped the ball.

We were both perplexed why he wouldn't stop play to allow a player with an equipment (or other) issue get off the field.  Very, very strange.

Kaline was a bit awkward and said some cringe-worthy things on the air.   Totally agree that he was an okay announcer.   He gets a hard pass, though, for being Mr. Tiger.  And Kell smoothed over any Kaline rough patches - he was phenomenal.

I have an extremely flat and rectangular ass, so I'm willing to smuggle iPads into the stadium for the right price.    Never thought I would offer to be an iPad mule, but I'll take whatever I can in this gig economy.

09/06/2018 - 12:02pm I think all '68 Tigers get…

I think all '68 Tigers get honorary "legend" status.  I was not alive to witness their title, but that was an amazing crew that performed Herculean tasks amidst some socially crazy times.   Kaline, McClain, Lolich, Cash, Horton, etc. are the All-Star legends, but every team member gets a legendary participation trophy in my mind.

Price was definitely not a star, but being part of that team is something special to most Tiger fans.  I *really* want to like him as a color analyst, but it just doesn't agree with my tastes.

09/06/2018 - 10:57am Since you brought up the …

Since you brought up the "buggy whip" catch phrase, what's the local feeling regarding the Tigers' radio crew?   I listened to a few games earlier this year (I'm not local, but caught them on Sirius XM) and was personally sick of Price's constant "buggy whips" by the 3rd inning in each game I caught.   I really didn't care for his analysis - just a lot of positive spin without much substance.   I fully get that he's a '68 Tigers legend, but did not enjoy listening to his banter.   I was fine with Dickerson as PBP.

I'm terribly biased, though, as I grew up listening to Harwell and Carey.    I also understand that everyone has a love/hate relationship with announcers.  It's a very personal taste.

09/04/2018 - 1:39pm I'm definitely seeking…

I'm definitely seeking someone with more football acumen to help answer this question.   I think I am spoiled by our recent string of awesome interior DL who would blow shit up on a frequent basis.   But the ultimate answer is probably more nuanced than placing blame solely on either the edge rushers or interior DL - I'm sure it's a play-by-play answer.    The UFR's have helped me understand situational football immensely, so I'm looking forward to the analysis.

HOT TAKE!

This notion is just plain stupid.   How you jumped to the "zero heart" conclusion is beyond my mental capacities.

Oh, wait.  This is the internet.

09/04/2018 - 12:27pm This was my exact initial…

This was my exact initial reaction to the first Hill "gaffe".   Maybe it was a busted zone coverage issue?   But I quickly discarded that notion since we play man so frequently.    This issue is exactly why I love the UFR's.

09/04/2018 - 12:24pm I spent much of the game…

I spent much of the game flustered at the gaping lanes left open by what I thought was hyper-aggressive edge rushes that flushed Wimbush out of the pocket without proper contain.  As an amateur football technician, I never thought to look at the lack of interior DL push as a potential cause of the gaping holes.   And now I feel bad for throwing mental shade at our DE's if this was largely an interior DL issue.

09/04/2018 - 12:18pm Short of mandating IV fluids…

Short of mandating IV fluids dripped through a Camelpak, what else is the coaching and S&C staff supposed to do?   I'm sure they lectured everyone on staying properly hydrated.  I'm certain they reminded everyone to stay hydrated during the game.   Should we blame this on the AD for having the gall to schedule a football game during 70 degree dew point conditions?

09/04/2018 - 11:35am Your pragmatism will not be…

Your pragmatism will not be tolerated in the wake of a Game 1 loss.

I happen to agree with you - we all knew ND's defense was a highly rated group before the first snap, and we all knew our OL was a work in progress (at best).   I will allow frustration to dominate my life only if we continue to struggle through early October.

09/04/2018 - 11:26am I second that notion. …

I second that notion.  Defense put us in a bind early, and it changed the entire complexion of the game.    Our defense needs to set the tone *early* in games for this team to be successful.   It's reality until the offense can find its groove.

Additionally, didn't Kinnel go straight to the locker room after this play?

09/04/2018 - 9:50am About offensive coaching…

About offensive coaching philosophy:   most trained observers (not counting myself among that crowd) agreed that last year's OSU offensive game plan was brilliant.   Even moderate execution would have enabled us to win that game.    So what happened in South Bend?   Lots of bad things.   Among them, a quick 14-0 deficit that either rendered our original offensive game plan moot OR we didn't appreciably alter our offensive strategy and hoped for good things to happen.   Coaches need to adjust situationally, and we didn't seem to be up to the task.   My point?  I'm not sure.   But I know offensive game planning brilliance, despite sub-par OL play, is possible from this coaching staff.  It definitely didn't appear last weekend.

09/02/2018 - 10:53am But was that TD catch going…

But was that TD catch going to stand?   Looked like his knee was out of bounds on replay, but maybe I'm blinded by maize and blue goggles.

09/02/2018 - 10:51am I totally agree with you on…

I totally agree with you on principle.   However, I think the Auburn-Washington matchup was the toughest game of the weekend based on rankings.   But your larger point holds true.   Very few top programs are willing to sacrifice a non-conference game to play a big one on the road.

Bottom line - we played in an extremely hostile environment, played rather poorly, and were within striking distance on the last drive.    I sure as hell want to start winning these types of games, but I'm also not driving my vehicle off the cliff today.
