Gavin Wimsatt and Khary Crump Were Late Portal Additions

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on May 1st, 2024 at 11:07 PM

Wimsatt was the decently-rated (out of HS) starting QB at Rutger(s) who never developed.  He lost his starting job in the spring to Athan Kaliakmanis, the former starting QB at Minnesota.

Crump is the bum from MSU that got probation for his role in the attack on Gemon Green.

Also...

Nigel Glover, a former LB at Northwestern who left after Fitz was fired and transferred to OSU is back in the portal.

As is BYU LB/S/VIPER, and former 2017(!) Michigan recruit, Chaz Ah You. Chaz was in the same class as Najee Harris, Chase Young and Donovan Peoples-Jones (+ Aubrey Solomon, Oliver Martin, Cesar Ruiz, Nico Collins, Kwity Paye, Ben Mason, etc.)

Maybe the staff saw an opportunity to strengthen Crump's character and give him some real coaching. His mind was twisted under Mel's tutelage.

Wimsatt would not be marked improvement over Davis Warren or Jack Tuttle, IMO. I also believe that the QB version of PTSD is real and that once guys get the spooks from being behind an o-line that is inferior to many of your opponents d-line, you can shake that out of them. Gavin will more than likely go on to be turnover machine wherever he lands next unless he's at a big fish in a little pond school/conference.

It’s always hard with QBs.

Having a system, a good OL, good QB coaching can mean everything.

Steve Young was average at Tampa and became a Hall of Fame QB with the 49s under Bill Walsh and the West Coast offense.

Running for your life or a poor system can damage your psych and make you look incompetent.

With that said I’m not sure he has shown anything worth upsetting the roster.

Meet Khary Crump, age 22, a sad man who wears a Spartan helmet, believing himself to be, in a manner of speaking, an actual ancient warrior of Sparta. Tonight, he's about to cross the line between competition and consequence, between defeat and dispute.

In the world of football, there are rules and regulations, codes of conduct that govern the game. But what happens when a man lets his rage override reason? When violence becomes the only language he knows?

The playing field isn't always what it seems. And for Khary Crump, the consequences of his actions in the famed Lloyd Carr Tunnel are about to take him on a journey beyond the gridiron, because that tunnel is, in fact, a portal that can lead to redemption. But for one Khary Crump, that redemption comes at a price – in the Twilight Zone.

Notta one.

It's filled with busts.

Sam Huard, highly rated QB who went to Washington, flamed out and wound up at Caly Poly is back in the portal.

Shane Illingworth, another bust that Michigan recruited. He transferred to Nevad for 2 or 3 years, couldn't start, now he is back in.

Wimsatt, Jeff Sims, Deacon Hill.

It's a bunch of nothing.

I hate to admit it, but I remain disappointed that we didn't go get Julian Sayin. 5*, might have been the #1 prospect available in the portal, and every comp you hear about him is...JJ McCarthy.

Instead he's going to be on the bench at OSU, waiting to see what happens next year.

And he may have ended up on the bench at Michigan...but he would've been nice to have in the spring to see if anything is there.

That said, it is what it is...I keep saying, let's let Tuttle and Warren battle for the 2021 McNamara QB spot. And Orji has already locked down the 2021 McCarthy role.

Go win the B1G and make the playoff.

What were we going to do to get him? He followed his recruiter, Bill O'Brien, to OSU. He gets to play with 5 plus 5 Star receivers in a pass happy offense.

Sam was supposed to be the favorite at UW. Recruited by Jimmy Lake. Dad and uncle played QB at UW. I watched his final game at UW - an ugly home loss in the Apple Cup to Wazzu. Had four INTs and was strip-sacked (recovered by the O). Max Browne, another huge recruit who was from Washington and went to USC (and then Pitt), is another example of hyped Qbs who then stink it up.

Out of high school Chaz Ah You was a good safety prospect (and in his only two years where health allowed him to play he excelled at the position for BYU), but over COVID and injury redshirts, he has gained weight and been moved to linebacker...so not sure he is a priority for us with his last year (now two years since he last was able to play in games).

Wimsatt was always a project but he maybe picked the worst spot for him at Rutgers, who basically started him as soon as he walked in the front door but then seemingly didn't do anything to help him develop.  He's likely not an upgrade over anyone in the roster; if UM is going to go with an athletic, moderately accurate passer I'd stick with Orji.

The BYU guys basically having permanent COVID shirts because of their missions, and then usually being dads with 2 kids as juniors, is always surreal.  It's also why I'm a bit dubious about their coaches being elsewhere, as they're used to having physically developed guys in bulk by means that aren't reproducible elsewhere.

I think Brian would be in favor if they run a heavy QB run offense with Orji. One of his critiques is the other QBs on the roster can't run the optimal Orji offense, which limits it's installation and going all in. Wimsatt could run it and spell Orji if needed.

Hot take: UM should offer Wimsatt and run with the Orji offense Brian has been advocating for. That is an offense that was not on display at the spring game. QB run heavy.

The problem with Orji is the other QBs can't mimic his capabilities. Wimsatt is a capable replacement for a series or two if Orji is briefly dinged up. It's good to have a QB on the roster who can come in and do many of the same things.

Wimsatt is not a dude for a passing and hand the ball off and 2 QB runs a game offense. He's not the guy if Orji is hurt multiple games. But he'd be a great addition if they intend to have 10+ QB runs a game.

How utterly embarrassing that State had a player assault an injured opponent with a weapon and he left the university... on his own terms, with the team wanting to keep him. Pathetic.

As aesthetically unpleasing as it would be, and as many field goals as it would lead to.. and as many frustrating drives of nothing as we would incur...

I'm much happier taking a shot with what we have vs bringing in guys who throw picks, aren't dynamic, and look like NW / Iowa / Wisky / Indiana QBs for the better part of the last 20 years.

I honestly thought Wimsatt had a lot of potential. The constant rotation was absolutely terrible for his development. I know you want to win games and you do what’s best for the team, but if they would’ve backed him and let him develop through his struggles, he may have been a difference maker for them.
