MGoBoard poll: How many of you follow Michigan Hockey?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on December 6th, 2018 at 2:57 PM

I'd like to get as many responses as I can. I'm going to be writing a piece on Michigan Hockey's popularity and where it is in 2018.

I remember the days where MGoBlog would crash during the tournament games in the early 2010s.

Simple question. Do you follow Michigan Hockey like you do Football & Basketball?

Definitely! I have the games set on alert on the CHN app.

Since I am on the east coast, I obviously can't attend any games, and it is extremely rare to get the game televised, but I always read up on the results the next day.

I am just as much a fan of hockey but it's more difficult to watch the games (FU BTN+) as I am out of market.  I generally tune in to the message board posts during the same to keep up on the scores (a huge thank you to those that pass along the scores live!)

I remember standing in line for season tickets back in 1989 when the program was just getting back to a top level program.  I was back in A2 for the championship seasons in 96 and 98. A hockey championship would be almost as satisfying as one in football or basketball.

I like Michigan hockey more than Michigan basketball and I would follow it more closely if it were televised as often. But it isn't, so I guess I don't follow it as closely.

Yes but as an out-of-state fan, I cannot watch nearly as many as I can with football or hockey, obviously. If I had the ability to view all the games on my TV in HD, I would watch 85%+ (same as I do with basketball).

I do follow Michigan Hockey and depending on how depressing football gets (not much recently) it is my #1 team

I don't watch as much since getting married (watching Michigan sporting events 4-5 days a weeks is more difficult when you have a spouse and places to be)

I also stopped paying for super cable to get BTN where I am so it's harder to watch.

Given all that, no sporting event terrifies me more than NCAA tournament hockey. If it goes to OT I feel like I'm on life support

Yes.  Much, much more than basketball but less than football (only because I can't watch every away hockey game on television).

I follow it on Twitter a bit and here.  I'm not a particularly devoted fan, but I know what people when they say SNL line and I know, for example, that they haven't been particularly good stopping the puck getting into the net and have an okay, at best, offense.

The issue is they aren’t televised unless you pay for BTN+ which I think would be a waste. If they were televised I’d watch every game. It’s so hit or miss until conference play really heats up that I usually just keep track of their record and star players until then. We need to pull a Texas and just have our own station for sports.

I don't watch every game, but I watch a fair number of the regular season games and every postseason game. I do love myself some Michigan hockey, but there aren't enough hours sometimes.

No - but besides 5 years in Maine in the 70's, I grew up in VA/NC and the Caps sucked back in the day. Hockey and Basketball really happened after I graduated too.

So never mind me.

I follow in a very bandwagon way. I find some joy in seeing that we landed a top hockey recruit and will watch the important end of season games. When they win I am happy, when they lose I move on with my life....I wish I could adopt this sort of fandom for football.

Tough to follow both college hockey and basketball in the same depth - just not enough time.  Played basketball in high school, not hockey, so that is probably why the choice for me.  However, I do read the MGoBlog hockey content to keep up to speed with how the team is doing.

YES.  I attend the home games, plus those in EL.  I read everything Hockey that you folks post.

FB is my number 1 interest, but I would say that Hockey is number 2.

Yes.  Love it, but not like football and basketball.  I will watch live or DVR every football and basketball game and try to avoid media if I can't watch live.

For hockey, I watch when it is available and when I can.  I will make time for it but the comments on the MGoHockeycast with respect to limited broadcasts are spot on.

Sometimes I will do some work in my office with game audio streaming.

I live about 1:45 from Ann Arbor.  We have 5 football season tickets, 2 basketball season tickets, and zero hockey season tickets.  I try to make it to one or two games a year at Yost.

Regular season is tough. But I have a standing agreement to travel to a Final 4/Frozen 4/Playoff any time Michigan is involved. Last year was almost an excellent two weekend stretch in April (still was fun).

I don't follow hockey until the Frozen Four, and this is a really bad way to get a sample of mgoblog representation because those who do watch hockey are far more likely to click into this thread.

I read title and initially went, nope, don't follow so not gonna click in and then realized you're trying to take a poll and since I do market research as part of my job, I just couldn't resist pointing out the flaw in method here.

What I would suggest doing to get an idea of relative popularity amongst this blogs readers is comparing the number of comments on game recaps.

I'm ballparking here, but I feel like football recaps get about 250 comments, basketball 50 and hockey like 10.  And that's probably a relatively accurate comparison of popularity of the respective sports.  M Football 5x more popular than Bball and Bball 5x more popular than hockey.

EDIT: just went back and looked at recent hockey posts and they're getting 0-3 comments per.  Yikes.

Other ways to compare without introducing so much bias: facebook likes for Michigan Football (1.6 Million) vs. Michigan Hockey (147k) compare TV ratings for comparable games, etc.

Yes!

I try to get to at least a couple games per season (this season I'm going to both our road games in South Bend---only 40 minute drive vs 2 1/4 hours to Ann Arbor for me; also planning on at least one game at Yost).

As far as my level of fandom goes, Michigan Football is a 10, Hockey an 8, MBB a 7 1/2, Michigan Baseball a 5.  I played a lot more pond hockey and baseball than any kind of basketball as a kid, so while I pay close attention to those two sports in general, I watch very little hoops unless it's Michigan Basketball.

A little off-topic, but I want to purchase hockey tickets soon for the January 5th outdoor game at ND. Does anyone know what sections of ND Stadium are going to be Michigan fan seating?

Not interested in all in paying for "BTN-Plus."  Put the games on the BTN channel we're already paying for.  (Has anyone read their cable bill lately?)

I keep up with scores and read the game synopsis (sometimes goal analyses) but much more heavily in the playoffs. It was so much easier to follow hockey when i was in the Hockey Band lol

Yes, I would say I follow basketball closer than hockey but a lot of that has to do with the lack of televised games for hockey. Brian and Dave have talked about this recently on the podcast as well, but it is really a shame all homes games are not at least streamed.
