Had Wilson not come in to provide excellent pass pro, we may have scored 14 less points.  That -4 from Evans in pass pro could have been -8 if he finished that game.  I mean Evans is a liability in the pass game when he is being counted on to pick up the blitz.  Wilson is the only back willing take on that LB nose-to-nose.  Even Higdon is an ole' guy and not very good at pass pro.

Tru Wilson can be trusted and should get way more snaps.

09/19/2018 - 9:11pm Ugh - Evans pass pro is…

Ugh - Evans pass pro is pathetic.  Seriously, I think Wilson is a better all purpose guy than Evans given his pass pro chops.  If Higdon is good, I would elevate Wilson to more snaps.  They just don't use Evans in the pass game, so he is not effective unless he can stick his f-ing nose into a LB's gut and stone him.

It's the lack of bagmen at these titans ... Alabama would be on that list post Bear Bryant but they said "if you can't beat$ them, then join$ them".

Already looks like an All-American.  Great athleticism so can also return punts, KOs, etc.

Maybe this commit tips a few more ultra high-star guys our way to finish the recruiting year strong.

Go Dax !!!

DANG ... Welcome Daxton Hill. You have gone Blue !!!

09/18/2018 - 4:53pm This team has a very…

This team has a very competent QB and the WRs have been coached up (finally).  Just need to get the OL timing better in the run game and Higdon / Evans healthy.  Keep installing more to the offense, work on pass pro and shore up the defensive blips (penalties and blown coverage).

This team has way more potential than the 2017 squad and ultimately more than the 2015 team.  The issue has always been the 2018 schedule, but the competition is struggling compared to expectations so maybe the schedule is not as daunting as previously feared.  I mean even OSU's defense is ranked 9th among B1G teams which is mind-boggling given their opponents.  Of course, Haskins has been on fire so maybe they have been playing backups or soft on defense.

But as far as the season goes, there is a plan and good opponents to test team progress.  Nebraska, Northwestern and Maryland should provide another level of competition to get better from before we face the gauntlet of Wisconsin, MSU and PSU.  That stretch will really test the 2018 ceiling.

09/18/2018 - 2:00pm I agree with this take.  SMU…

I agree with this take.  SMU put 8 in the box and the run game just wasn't there - they just plain outnumbered us.  We will need to pass it 5-10 more times a game but all of it underneath stuff with TE cover for the LT and RB for blitz/stunt help.  West Coast spread with a bit more to Perry / Martin from the slot to open up the run game and also a bit more play-action from power.  Shea has the arm talent to get those throws out quickly before any real pass rush ensues.  If Shea completes 7 more throws a game for an average of 10 yards that could add up to 7+ more points per game.  Maybe even more scoring production if the run lanes get better and Higdon chunks a few.

My believe is Harbaugh is just getting started with his full offensive install.  He is trying to build this house with a good foundation to last well into November and beyond.  Go Blue !!!

09/18/2018 - 11:57am This would be my "versus…

This would be my "versus expectations" list so far:

UP - Hart, Kemp, Ross, Watson, Mone, Wilson, Collins, DPJ, Thomas

EVEN - Shea, Higdon, Evans, Mason, Gentry, Eubanks, Perry, Martin, Bredesen, Ruiz, Onwenu, JBB, Wild Thing, Gary, Winovich, Bush, Hudson, Metulles, Long, Gil, Hawkins, Marshall

DOWN - Runyan, McKeon, Dwumford, Hill, Kinnel, Solomon (before he was hurt)

Two guys who really need to step it up for B1G play is Hill and Kinnel - solid leaders who seem to be having a bit of a slump compared to last year.  LT is going to be an issue that has to get solved by either Runyan making real improvement or one of the youngsters stepping up.

Overall need to run more power, play-action and WC passing spread.  Mix in some underneath passing this week to complement the deep threat and seam work that Nebraska will be prepared for.  Bring the passing total up to about 30 from last week's 18 ... establish the pass to make the run game available.  Then keep it balanced and Nebraska off balance in the secondary.  That seems to be the opponent's weakness.  Go Blue !!!

09/18/2018 - 10:56am Hard to put a finger on the…

Hard to put a finger on the defensive issues other than teams have had an entire off-season to game plan for press man coverage and our blitz packages.  Like the offense, this "pre-season" defense could all be dumbed-down a bit before conference play in order not to show on film the good stuff new for 2018.  We will see on Saturday as the gloves will be off for Nebraska.

09/18/2018 - 10:48am I lost count how many pick…

I lost count how many pick plays they ran to separate Proche from a CB, it was the only way to get the guy open.  It was tough to watch the film and let those plays go uncalled OPI but then call us on DPI for some pretty standard man-to-man defense.  Just thought the refs were from a different planet.  That crew called a strange game.

Like in b-ball, sometimes a crew comes into a game with a set philosophy ... "we are going to call a tight game as those Michigan CB look grabby on film".  Shit can happen like that from an out of conference crew that is used to watching spread teams play into zone coverage.

09/18/2018 - 8:40am Gary is drawing a lot of…

Gary is drawing a lot of doubles so Kemp is making the plays.  They seem like the best anchor / 3-tech combo so far.   Mone is strong at NT but Winovich is way under rated in that PFF score.

What is up with our DBs?  Was Hurst that disruptive to opponents pass game?  I think so as it matters a lot having that extra 2 seconds in the pocket as it allows a bit more separation.

09/17/2018 - 3:42pm There is a season long plan…

There is a season long plan and JH is clearly calling the shots.  Gentry and DPJ came out of wraps just before Nebraska.  Now Frost needs to game plan for the deep ball to either/both Nico and DPJ as well as Gentry in the seam.  Expect to see more things added for Nebraska, maybe more under stuff with Perry and Martin (and Evans if he is healthy).

If Higdon is still out, expect to see Wilson start and we amp up the pass game.  Wilson is damn good at picking up the blitz.  I am sure Harbaugh would like to drop like 70+ on Frost.

09/17/2018 - 1:14pm Top 5 B1G QBs based on…

Top 5 B1G QBs based on Passer Rating (YTD'18):

  1. Haskins      192.4
  2. Patterson    171.2
  3. Blough        152.1
  4. Lewerke      147.8
  5. Hornibrook  145.2

McSorley is 10th at 126.6 so far this year ... which is taking a big hit to performance compared to last year as a result of all those weapons now departed.  Last year he was the #2 rated B1G passer with a 153.7

09/16/2018 - 8:04pm 5 star QB to 5 star WR. …

5 star QB to 5 star WR.  Nice combo to build on ... and then 5 star QB is going to hit Gentry, Perry, McKeon, Collins, Martin ... shit we have so many weapons.  By the end of the season, we will be a Power-I + West Coast juggernaut.  Mark it down.  Unstoppable attack coming in the pass game with a run attack that is also going to chunk yards from power.  OL is getting pass pro down and RBs picking up the blitz.  Defense needs to settle a bit and cut the penalties, but I am going to say the best is yet to come from this defense.  Just high on our overall team ceiling.  Super excited for the remaining season.

B1G title is the goal.  Time to get it done.  Go Blue !!!

This guy is a pathological liar.  He has a basic personality disorder and the meds can only help so much.  At some point the lie will cover up something even worse and he will get caught.  It nearly happened at Florida before he resigned for "health" reasons.

09/16/2018 - 11:20am Harbaugh is 100% correct. …

Harbaugh is 100% correct.  That was not targeting.  QB was a running back in the box and lowered his head to gain more yards.  Every running back in America does that nearly every run play in this sport.  Plus there was no penalty called by the field crew.

This call should be appealed and the suspension can be reversed if the league determines it was not truly targeting under the rules.  I mean you could have called it on the QB because he lowered his head to hit Hudson with the crown of his helmet.  Just because Hudson is stronger than the QB doesn't make it a penalty.

09/16/2018 - 10:55am Agreed - was this a home…

Agreed - was this a home game?  Any back that is running the ball between the tackles is not a defenseless player.  Shit the ball carrier lowered his head to gain extra yards.  It matters not if he happens to be the QB ... the guy was lowering his head into the play to gain more yards, what is Hudson supposed to do?  This is football.  Then phantom PI calls.  It all added up to someone in that crew just did not like Michigan.

09/14/2018 - 9:20pm Me, too.  MSU sucks and I…

Me, too.  MSU sucks and I hate that shit ass place more than OSU.  The last 10 yrs have been filled with a shit storm and they are the toilet for the great State of Michigan.  East Lansing is basically a cesspool.

OSU is not far behind.  I mean the shit storm that is Columbus is there, too.  Urban Meyer is a dirt bag who enables wife beating coaches to exist and murders to walk at FLA.  Guy is just another thug in college football.

Bottom line ?  I want badly to beat both dirt balls.  Can't believe my University has to compete against such scum.  Period.

09/14/2018 - 9:26am Hill is having a meh start…

Hill is having a meh start to the season.  Unless he comes on strong his draft position won't be very attractive with mediocre stats in his junior year.  Both he and Long might need another year of maturity to reach their max draft positions.  Watson on the other hand looks like a higher draft pick than Hill or Long ... at least based upon their play so far this season.  But we are just getting started with tons of playmaking yet to come.  I would expect Hill to come on strong in league play and likely be the guy who goes early.  Long was a redshirt so more likley he stays another year ... you know, be THE guy of the DBs versus the guy just behind Hill.  I think he stays to improve his draft position.

09/14/2018 - 9:15am Wow, Kemp looks much better…

Wow, Kemp looks much better than just a guy.  We will see how he stacks up to a B1G lineman but he has potential.  Former anchors make good 3-techs, they really get the role and the teamwork needed with the anchor.

09/13/2018 - 9:20pm Bigger deal is Scot Loeffler…

Bigger deal is Scot Loeffler is back with Adazzio as his OC (like at Temple) and BC looks really good with AJ in power and the play-action pass.

For those who don't know, Scot is a Michigan man and former starting QB before injury.

09/13/2018 - 12:41pm "rolling the dice" at LT is…

"rolling the dice" at LT is too much risk to QB health ... I think testing both out with the first team during practice is the first step.  Give each some reps at SMU with the first team in the 2nd half of hopefully a blowout and then grade their performance.  The coaches will know if either is ready to be better than Runyan.  But I doubt we see a change unless Jon is not making the necessary improvements to keep his job.  Maybe he can get better with time on task and development.  JBB improved a significant amount over the course of last season.  If not, about Maryland we might see a change as he will get passed by one of Mayfield or Hudson.

Wholly shit ... DPJ is 10/10 on UFR with a TD and the steadiest hand on the WR core. He hasn't missed a play yet.  His PFF grade is like #2 in the league for WRs.  Wholly shit, he is having a great start to the season.

09/12/2018 - 2:30pm This blocking scheme from…

This blocking scheme from the gun is going to set up the RPO package.  The OG pulls but Y goes up the seam instead of blocking down on the LB.  If the LB stays with Y up the seam, the hand-off occurs because the LB is essentially "blocked" for the run option.  But if the LB crashes the gap as Seth indicates, then Shea reads pass and hits Y up the seam for a big gainer.

I think we torch Nebraska with that gem in the B1G opener.

Trust Harbaugh ... there is a plan ... "I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord"  (PC)

Go Blue !!!

09/12/2018 - 11:47am Wow, he is sooo out of…

Wow, he is sooo out of postion at TE.  If I was his coach, he would be at OT mashing giant holes at the point of attack.  Half the plays he is going downfield and missing at the second level - total waste of a big body.  Does he play both ways and they are saving him for DL?  YouTube froze on me half way thru the tape so did not see any defensive reps.  Looks strong and athletic, but wish he was at OG or OT so he was learning more blocking technique.

09/12/2018 - 11:06am What he is saying is the…

What he is saying is the loss at ND doesn't derail any of the team goals.  Would have been great to beat them at TD Jesus, but UM did not start the game as expected and dug too deep of a hole.  Having played team sports, a wake-up call like that is sometimes better long-term than the opposite ... as long as the players face the adversity and work even harder.  The Florida win last year masked some real issues that did not get addressed right away and lingered far too long.  This season should  unfold more like 2015 with improvement every week.  But big difference in this 2018 team versus 2015 is a better QB and more offensive weapons at RB & WR, so a higher potential ceiling if they can keep improving each week.

Go Blue !!!

09/11/2018 - 9:05pm East Lansing is the sesspool…

East Lansing is the cesspool of the great State of Michigan.  Every place needs a toilet to flush its waste and that place is MSU.

09/11/2018 - 5:30pm 3 yards gives more time for…

3 yards gives more time for the QB to read the defensive reaction.  The RPO scheme was developed to take advantage of that post snap read-option.  OL blocking 3 yards downfield is huge advantage - tends to induce LBs/Safeties to commit to their run read.  And given the 3 yards is never really enforced, offenses are now pulling guards and getting into the true second level beyond 3 yards.  It is like the proliferation of the "rub route" ... when they got lax on calling the pick play it then was proliferated by the spread guys.

What Pat is saying is that rules have been changed to encourage offense over defense.  Which in his mind is "communistic".

09/11/2018 - 5:00pm It seems RPO is more about…

It seems RPO is more about getting LBs / Safeties to commit to run or pass.  3 yards is a big deal versus 1 yard not because that downfield OL can block a LB on a true pass play, rather it gives the QB more time to read the reaction and thus creates an advantage in which option to take.  Commit to the run, pull it for the pass option and vice-versa.

College is more about flashy offensive points versus the NFL which is more old-school.  Proliferation of the spread in college is all about that 3 yard cushion plus the "no call" pick-play that Purdue has perfected.  Strict enforcement would eliminate the big scoring machines in college and fans would complain.

09/11/2018 - 11:54am Agreed - you can't contend…

Agreed - you can't contend for a B1G title expecting vertical passing to be a staple.  I mean late-October thru November the weather doesn't typically support that ... plus, you need the threat of a good run game to open that stuff up.  But I get it, we also need the vertical pass threat to keep the better teams honest.  I would like to see coaches diversify that deep ball to DPJ this week so that both wide-outs are seen as a vertical threat.  That would be very valuable to put on tape for the Nebraska and Northwestern games.

In the run game, the wrinkle added were the OG pulls from the spread / zone blocking scheme.  Adding power concepts to the spread run game really helped the OL create gaps - our backs are not spread type jitter-bugs, especially Higdon who is 100% a one-cut power type guy.  Would like to see the OL perfect these concepts and then later in the season add some killer RPO pass routes to break tendency.  If the OL can use this time for improvement, it will pay way bigger dividends later in the season when they will be counted on to deliver.

09/11/2018 - 11:21am The coaches have a plan -…

The coaches have a plan - for each individual game and for the entire season.  Goal is weekly improvement so that we can peak for the gauntlet of the B1G season - need to be ready for Wisconsin, MSU, PSU and OSU.  Stay healthy is goal #1, rep bread and butter schemes to build confidence, add wrinkles only as needed to beat a specific opponent.

Game plan for SMU, whatever it is, fits into the overall season game plan for improvement.  SMU's offense is a decent test for UM's pass defense, but the SMU defense is really terrible.  Expect it to go like WMU ... Higdon and Evans will have big games on the ground just because SMU is not good.  Passing attack will be more of the same - spread it around with maybe add more Ambry Thomas as a wrinkle ... but that is to set him up as a decoy in the big games.  Hopefully put some big plays from Ambry on tape.  They are being really coy with Gentry and Eubanks in the pass game, I would expect that to continue unless they need to unleash them to win a game before the gauntlet.  TEs are going to be huge to add in to the passing attack come the gauntlet.  RPO is coming as well, but not likely until MSU.  Coaches want to get good at the run plays out of the spread so that teams see that on tape and believe they need to bring safeties down to help out.  That opens the RPO as a potential big play weapon.

There is a season plan.  I think coaches went in to ND expecting a better start to the game from the defense and had a conservative offensive game plan married to an expected defensive gem ... win the game like 17-10 on the road.  That did not happen.  We got the good Wimbush vs. the bad Wimbush (Ball State - 3 INTs) ... ND just made more big plays than expected.

09/10/2018 - 11:59am TV schedule determines our…

TV schedule determines our start times - except versus OSU which will always be a 12noon KO

Right now it looks like MSU could be at night, but the TV execs will decide that after a few more games.  If MSU continues to struggle, then EL will not likely be a night game.  They want these night games to matter to a broader national audience.

09/10/2018 - 11:45am We don't really learn much…

We don't really learn much in these early games.  No one is opening up the playbook to put it on film until they have to ... slow starts from MSU, PSU and Wisconsin seems to happen every year.  Harbaugh does that card-playing as well.

Once the meat of the B1G season starts we will see who is legit and who is truly struggling.

09/10/2018 - 11:38am Yes, Mason was in often…

Yes, Mason was in often because we ran more power.

There are two ways to keep safeties out of the box in these sets ... (1) the renewed (real) threat of play-action pass and (2) old Murderface.

Both are highly effective.

Well if Rashan can take out 3 lineman every play we are going to destroy every team on the schedule.  Man is he a beast or what ?

09/09/2018 - 11:37am Shea Man - damn straight. …

Shea Man - damn straight.  Ascending and wearing #2.  Team is going to improve every week.  Liked the run game from the spread this week, much more power gap assignments rather than pure zone and it paid off with big open lanes.  Nice mix of under-center and gun ... looked like Michigan football.  Yes, it was only WMU but it helps to develop an identity, practice it and gain confidence.  Hopefully, just keep building on it into the meat of the B1G schedule.  Need to peak at the right time and carry that into the 'shoe.

Go Blue !!!

09/08/2018 - 11:42am This is not good.  Depth at…

This is not good.  Depth at DT is who?  Game one and we lost 2 from the 2-deep rotation?

Would not be shocked to see Hudson go back to defense and be in the DT rotation.  Otherwise, we are going 3-3-5 for the rest of the season and will use Gary as the DT in passing downs.

09/08/2018 - 11:30am Pep is 100% power, pro set…

Pep is 100% power, pro set guy ... combo under-center and shot gun, but West Coast guy all the way.  Only Warriner has OC experience with the spread and read option stuff while at OSU, but that did not go well for him.

I think our staff are Power / West Coast experts and should stick with what they are good at.  Shea can run that offense.  He has great accuracy to be a WC passer.  Mix in some RPO to keep it relevant, but only like 10-15% and use it to take some big risks (fades, seams, slants, etc).   Most of our run yards against ND came from 6 power plays under center.  The spread runs were stuffed for like no positive net yards.

09/08/2018 - 11:18am We all need to read Mr. King…

We all need to read Mr. King's post.  This is a new team and it needs to be tested and graded each week ... that leads to improvement.  Coaches also grade themselves.  It will get better.

But Runyan at LT is not good enough if we are going spread 70%, he just doesn't have the length to handle most P5 DEs.  I would try Hudson or Stueber for a few series with the first team this week and grade them out versus Runyan.  I think JBB will be OK at RT ... a +2 in the run and a -1 in pass pro.

But overall I am not very thrilled about this spread we are attempting.  You have to have a QB that keeps on some of those read option looks otherwise it is never going to work.  I just don't think read option is Harbaugh's strength and no one else on the staff brings that either.  Most of the read option sets were just a complete waste of valuable plays.

09/07/2018 - 9:55pm Well this sucks on top of…

Well this sucks on top of his appendectomy issues I would guess he is done for the season.

09/07/2018 - 8:59pm Stats don't really support…

Stats don't really support that view.  We ran 6 power I plays for 33 yards and then ran about 24 plays from the spread for a net 25 yards.  That just sucks no matter how you want to rationalize zone is "bread and butter".  We don't run the spread looking zone stuff worth a shit.  The mix needs to be the opposite of what we did at ND ... 24 power I plays and 6 zone read stuff.  Out of the gun is fine, but we should stick to the base WCO passing attack and maybe a series or two of true RPO to let Shea loose.
