I was going to say something simiar - Teske can't play 40 mins/game and the foul rate likely isn't linear due to fatigue - keep playing him another 9min/game to get to 36 and those last 9 mins will likely lead to more fouls per min played as he gets more winded.

taking him out with one foul gives him a breather mid way thru and protects the fouls on him. they need 10mins/game at the 5 from Livers and Davis one way or the other.

Debate about how recent but Jim Herman I think retired from coaching within 5 years of being run out of town back in 03(?).

Dude had the best D of the decade in his 1st year as a coord. And was flat run out of town after that minn game. Maybe that was 05?

01/05/2019 - 3:16am It actually is related to my…

It actually is related to my cynicism re: CU and Utah joining the pac12. Those two schools will never win anything in that conf. Who the hell is going to draw Cali and southern kids to play skool in Colorado or Utah? Maybe in a niche sport like CU track (which I suspect is dominant in major part due to elevation) and Utah WGym.

They will field uncompetitive teams every year in almost every sport until the state of California finally falls off into the pacific due to an earthquake sometime in the mid 2500s.

Similar to Psu - when they joined the b10 arrogant psu ppl thought they’d pull every talented athlete from Chicago and the rest of the Midwest to play in state college. The reality was just the opposite-  the rest of the B10 could now access Penn and Bal-md-dc area kids and sell them on playing at home 1-2 times a year. Penn Kids now srsly look at 10-12 other schools instead of just Psu bc, cause, etc. Conversely, middle west kids now just look at one more school - psu - which I think we can all agree just isn’t that ducking special. #usernamechecksout

01/05/2019 - 2:56am If you look at non rev…

If you look at non rev spirts the pac 12 dominates. Even leaving Stanford aside, cal, UCLA, usc, zona and asu and UW do very well due to 3 things:

location to talent, location to weather, and academics

people in these sports know they likely won’t make 50M within 5 years of graduation by playing professionally. So we know there’s talent out there (simply a combo of population and money and weather to train all year long)- why would anyone leave that weather, especially if it’s ones home, for academics that won’t beat the pc12?

However, basketball and football players don’t care about school. Legitimately - they money is too much for the top 50 players. So duke will pull kids from the west, Gonzaga will and a few others. Of course it’s also coaching but that stems from admin issues at these places too- IMO the admins are so academically focused they don’t know how to deal with Athletics and the money that comes with it too well.

No one's defending it. There are things to fix. Too many voice their feelings on the internet making them look like entitled babies (e.g., Superfan). How about instead we talk about what could be fixed and let the coaches fix them? That's what adults do instead of inventing uncreative nicknames for them, whining about acceptable performance on Twitter and eventually running them out of town.

I used to follow the Superfan guy on Twitter, until I realized he's a fucking whiny baby

12/30/2018 - 9:34am make better choices for…

make better choices for captains? IDK it's not that simple. Maybe there's something more sinister going on here with the team dynamic, but that's tin foil hat bullshit IMO. The team was fine in Oct then by late Nov they developed some kind of fissure among the players? coaches? both? We can't even begin to speculate on that.

The things we can see are that M got injured on the DL at their strongest postions: DE. That was the keystone that held the D together. Good/ great secondary play went to Good at best after the injuries hit and losing Bush killed the middle of the D. That's pretty much the whole D. From that perspective, the coaches did great over the last year and up to Nov with what they had: 2 DEs that were great with one to hopefully step up. LBers fast and deep. Secondary that can stick for 3 seconds. Not a ton of depth besides LBer. Again, just fell apart with the top 2 DEs injured.

It's a jimmies and joes arguement IMO. On one hand we moan about how bad the OL is and we have no tackles. Then, when the offense doesn't score 30 we bitch about play calling and the coaches. TEs drop 3 balls a game, Shea throws 2 picks a game, the OL is a sieve and it's on coaching. We haven't been able to recruit at OSU, BAMA and Clemsons level most of the last 4 years. You saw the results of that when we play them. ND is in the same boat. They are at our level, one or 2 steps below those 3. Same for OU and everyone else.

12/30/2018 - 8:48am No. my arguement is that it…

No. my arguement is that it's not all on the coaches.

It's real fashionable these days to give the players all the power and none of the criticism. Xfer whenever they want for whatever reason. Pay them (more). Let them sit out the bowl game if they are thinking of going to the NFL.

And honestly, I agree with all of that (except maybe the last one? I'm kind of on the fence there). But with great power, comes great responsibility. And the players should take that. The TEs played like absolute ass the last 2 games. Especially Gentry vs OSU. Higdon sitting out as a captain is bush league the fact is he quit on his team as a fucking captain (yes he's looking out for #1 and that's his right but both can be true). Bush was at least questionable with injury.

There are guys like Winovitch and Gary and then there are guys like Higdon. But god bless him - with his talent he'll make as much money in his NFL career as I will have in 5-7 years

there will be a lot of comments dissmissing the players who sat out and BLAMING THE CORCHING (TM), but here's the situation:

M was without about 5 of their top 10 players, all of whom were upper classmen.

Their 2 primary captains CHOSE to sit out (well Bush was questionable). and a few others considered it as well. If that alone doesn't give you a hint about the psyche of the team going into the game, IDK what to tell you.

12/22/2018 - 6:06am here's my hot take: after…

here's my hot take: after the blame the offense got this year, and the number of points the D gave up, if M loses next year at home there is no number of points M can score where this fan base will let the offense off the hook.

M loses shootout 84-77 in Ann Arbor.

"The offense only scored 49 in the 1st half and couldn't keep up with the OSU scoring. That's on the offense."

"We know coming in that the offense was the more experienced side of the ball and had to lean on an experienced Shea, WRs and OL. They didn't get it done."

"Too many runs on 3rd and medium, have to answer the OSU TDs on the following drive."

"Pep and JH just didn't go for the throat offensively."

"Should have onside kicked after every score in the 2nd half - this game is on Harbaugh not trusting the offense in his 5th year"

"Route trees were garbage in that one drive we didn't score."

"Sure, they were 12/14 on 3rd down conversions, but those two missed opportunies killed us. Have to keep the ball and score there."

"Plus, we only had 14 3rd downs, but OSU only had 9. Need to do better on 1st and 2nd down playcalling."

"DPJ should have had 200 yards on OSUs D. Target him more."

"uuhhhh, DPJ has 247 yards today."

"I'm mean receiving yards - only had 175"

"oh yeah, my bad, you're right. Fire Pep."

He meant (AFAIK) that JH *gets* a red ass - meaning he's intense more frequently than most and his level of intensity if higher than most.

Yankee fans would ID Paul O'Neill as getting(having?) a red ass. Maybe George Brett would be more familiar to most (esp when the pine tar thing happened). Mike Singletary for the Chicago Bears. Zak Novack (esp vs MSU).

12/17/2018 - 5:39pm I've seen this statement 2-3…

I've seen this statement 2-3 times in this thread now and all I can think of is that line from Hunt for Red October about the classification computer trying to ID the "magma displacements"

You see, sir, SAPS software was originally written to look for seismic events. And when it gets confused, it kind of 'runs home to mama'.

I think these comments re: JH being "hard to take" after a few years is based on not knowing what the fuck is going on and therefore running back to that old, tired media-enabled trope.

12/04/2018 - 9:29pm Wisconsin 35,615 42,627 19.7…

Wisconsin 35,615 42,627 19.7%

Michigan 59,886 65,684 9.7%

Purdue 48,915 53,442 9.3%

Northwestern 37,259 40,426 8.5%

Rutgers 38,384 41,348 7.7%

Indiana 41,939 44,169 5.3%

Illinois 38,965 39,406 1.1%

Ohio State 52,427 52,540 0.2%

Nebraska 14,947 14,956 0.1%

Minnesota 43,720 43,441 -0.6%

 Maryland 34,017 33,568 -1.3%

Iowa 27,734 26,706- 3.7%

Penn State 56,114 N/A N/A

Michigan State 36,143 33,129 -8.3%

These are quite frankly amazing numbers.

1) MSU had fewer apps than every school but Neb and Iowa (LOL Neb no one wants to go there).

2) That is a sever drop that cannot be logically accounted for by anything but the shit the have gone thru the last 2 years. The quality of the MSU student has dropped a METRIC TON the last 2 classes: A year ago they admitted a huge class, this year they will admit everyone who applied, basically. If you know a mediorce student, tell them to apply to MSU - that's a great opportunity to go to a B10 school if your GPA is 2.5-3.0.

3) If the prev. posters accept rates are correct for MSU (77%): FUCKING LOL - that's SUNY Albany territory

4) Good on you UW! Probably part of the the big numbers for other B10 schools are the loss of apps at MSU apllying to these local B10 schools

5) We get 10k+ more apps than any other school in the B10?!

6) Admit rate last year was 24-25% for UM as others have pointed out. SAT/ACTs scores way up as is Avg GPA. It is prohibitively difficult to get into UM now. By the time my daughter maybe applies in 2024, the admit rate will be less than 15% at this rate. That's Cornell level admit rate with probably 30k-40k more apps received than any Ivy.

12/02/2018 - 9:44am what I hate about CFB:

1)…

what I hate about CFB:

1) Money is the driving factor

2) players get none of it and have no rights to thier likeness

3) the flat immorallity and/or amorality of a significant amount of key players: coaches, ADs, staff that survive in this field in spite or b/c of #1, 2

4) dehumanizing of ppl like when you go to MSU or OSU

5) whenever they change the playoff/bowls/NC system, they do it fucking half way. so we go from nothing/bowl games to the Bowl Coalition BS in the mid 90s to the BCS voting BS for a decade+ to a horshit 4 team playoff whose teams are voted in via a panel. Just fucking do it right. 5 major conferences. Those champs make it in. 1 at large for ND/anyone else who looks good. top 2 get byes. I could see an 8 team playoff if the conf champs are involved but you have to make a system that encourages good OOC matchups and uses the actual big 4 bowl games instead of the Rose Bowl being a 2nd tier game now.

12/02/2018 - 7:49am one of the crazy things…

one of the crazy things about this team (besides the D, Iggy, the toughness) is how this team makes opposing coaches like Painter and Williams just awed. Either with how well M plays (Painter) or how bad their team plays in comparison (how Roy Williams seemed last week).

These are experienced coaches who have seen a lot of success. And they are pretty amazed at how this team plays.

12/01/2018 - 10:34pm the defensive stats are…

the defensive stats are truely mind bottling - the D effeciency got better tonight, no one has scored more than 68, not one has shot more than 40 % (ish, I think) against us. Teams are so inefficient against the M defense they are averaging 20 or so pts under their avg for the season.
