Reports: John Beilein Interviewed For Pistons Job Comment Count

MOVE ALONG NOTHING TO SEE HERE [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

A Wojbomb has struck Ann Arbor:

Wojnarowski's report was corroborated by the Freep's Pistons beat writer, Vincent Ellis, who added some detail:

Woj mentioned a couple other candidates in a quick article posted shortly after the news broke:

Sources told ESPN that Beilein and former Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey met Thursday in Michigan with Pistons officials -- a contingent that included new senior adviser Ed Stefanski and coaching search consultants Bernie Bickerstaff and Jim Lynam.

Detroit also is planning to meet with Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard this weekend.

I won't lie: this isn't the news I wanted to hear, especially since The Athletic's Brendan Quinn tweeted that "a number of people extremely close to Beilein" were not aware this meeting occurred. Beilein, notably, acts as his own agent. The Pistons are owned by Tom Gores, noted Spartan who's done a not-so-great job of running the franchise since buying it from the family of noted Wolverine William Davidson.

[After THE JUMP: nonnonono]

That said, there's plenty of reason to believe this will end in a nice raise from Michigan for Beilein—and quite possibly his entire staff—when the dust settles. The Pistons are looking at a number of candidates, including one with NBA head coaching experience in Dwane Casey, and a few other names (like TNT's Kenny Smith) have popped up without anything seeming to come of it.

Meanwhile, Beilein has three years left on a deal that pays him $3.37MM annually, second in the Big Ten only to Tom Izzo—but the gap to MSU's coach, who makes $4.4MM a year, is sizable. An extension is being discussed, and athletic director Warde Manuel has made it clear he wants Beilein around for a long time. Beilein is in a strong negotiating position; he's coming off his second national title appearance in six years, the men's basketball program has been easily the most consistently good of the major sports during his tenure, and the money for his assistants doesn't stack up to M's Big Ten competition:

Manuel passed his first major test at Michigan with flying colors when he hired Mel Pearson to replace Red Berenson, a move that's brought an immediate turnaround for hockey. This may be the one he's ultimately judged on, however.

For everyone's sake, let's hope this moves quickly and results in Michigan firing the money cannon.

rather than a misunderstanding (shocker there).  Doesn't sound like this was an "interview" as Woj puts it, cuz, you know, retweets.

An "introductory meeting" for a guy who is his own agent could have very likely gone like this:

Pistons: Hey, John, would you be interested in formally interviewing for the Pistons job?

JB: I'm flattered, but very happy where I am.  I'm hungry.  I'm going to get some subs.

And that could be the end of the story.

I can't really see this going anywhere. Beilein is already 65, the only older NBA coaches are D'Antoni and Popovich, guys who've both been at the pro level for decades. It's hard to see the Pistons wanting to hire a 65-year-old coach with no pro experience (caveat: we are talking about the Pistons here, who seem intent on interviewing literally everyone), nor do I see Beilein wanting to make this level of change and adjustment at this point in his career. I'd imagine this will end up being a blip on the way to Beilein's contract extension and sizable pay hikes for his staff.

I have so much trouble envisioning Beilein jumping to the NBA.  I realize it's the tip-top of his profession but he seems like the exact opposite of an NBA guy.

is in the same mold as Steve Kerr and Brad Stevens, maybe even Pop. They each share demeanors and philosophies. There are many arguments against this move but saying Beilein wouldn’t be a very attractive NBA hire is not one. Now whether any coach can find success in Detroit in the short-term is highly questionable, and our best reason to not get too worked up over this interview. This feels to me like it’s Beilein kicking the tires, taking an NBA interview because it’s the pinnacle of his profession, but ultimately staying for what figures to be a third NCAA championship window at Michigan

Beilein is a great coach, but he's 65 and never coached an NBA game. I don't think either side legitimately thinks this will happen, but you explore all of your options. I do think Michigan needs to improve salaries for assistants to remain competitive.

Let's think of the possible new world order for a second. If the money canon fails to land a successful shot on JB, do we swing it around and aim it at Yaklich - given that he's been getting solid run as recruiting guru?

love coach B, but the NBA is a different animal...

not going to get NBA veterans to focus on fundamentals like chest passes...

as others have stated, i believe the NBA is less about coaching and more about managing a roster... its a league of Caliparis or Selfs...find the right mix of talent and then get them on the same page...

finding the right mix of talent and getting them on the same page. In college that includes working the findamentals repeatedly.

The real consummate professionals work the fundamentals on their own off season trying to improve facets of their game. If anything working with NBA talent would more likely allow John to work the X's and O's of the offense alot more rather than have to be so focused on the little things.

the timing of this seems so bad though. beilein is negotiating probably his final contract. he's got a great 2018 class coming in. and potentially stellar 2019 class. he has all the momentum to finish his career as a legend and win a championship. why would he throw all that away to tank the Pistons for a few years before getting fired and returning in relative obscurity? he has to be doing this for his assistants.

The other thing is this would be a ridiculous roster mismatch.  Nobody can shoot, and they're built to run through bigs with Drummond and Griffin, with little flexibility.

There’s a bunch of strange reasoning in this thread, which is to be expected, I guess. If Beilein was concerned with a larger salary for his assistants or himself, he’d just ask. He has the AD’s ear on anything. He’s also not really the power play type of guy. Or a legacy type guy. I doubt he goes, but it’s really to have a crack at the NBA before he retires. The Pistons give him that NBA chance without having to uproot his life. And as we know, he’s been ahead of the curve in terms of offensive philosophy since WVU, and it would be great to see how he would implement that philosophy with NBA talent. He’s not a fundamentals type coach either, despite what people on this thread have suggested. He’s a big picture offensive guy, and with NBA talent I’m enthralled with the possibilities. And if it doesn’t work out in the NBA he just retires having coached every level of basketball.

totally...

“But then we come in and we’re learning middle-school drills, and I’m just like, ‘Wow,’” Livers said, shaking his head Friday after practice before tonight’s clash with Florida State for a berth in the Final Four.

While Sanderson is in charge of transforming the bodies of Michigan players, Beilein takes responsibility for skill development. His approach emphasizes fundamentals like jump stops, chest passes and pivots so much that first-year assistant coach DeAndre Haynes remembers thinking at first, “Man, this is like you’re going back to high school."

So assuming Quinn’s #’s are correct, Beilein is making $1M less and the 3 top assistants are making $75 to $100k less on average compared to other top B1G programs. Not being an academic, can Wards just rollout the money truck, without some sort of process/ business case? Maybe this is all part of that? Also, here is some career advice for us all. Even if you love your job, you have nothing to lose (unless you are Doug Marrone) by interviewing for a “better” job. There is no downside.

that he needs to go to this level to squeeze an extra million out for his assistant. I know it's business but not his style combined with would like to think Michigan A.D is a little more easy to work with esp with their love for JB and the professionalism by both sides.

Hate to admit it but think he has obvious interest in this. Let's face a guy growing up a hoops junkie may have always dreamed of coaching at that level. Might be his lifetime dream. Maybe he feels would take perfect situation and this might be it for him in this state, etc... who knows.

you go for the fun of it, with an open mind, even entertain the prospect. How weird.

P.S. Has UM Hoops ever gotten the scoop on a big UM basketball story? Still nothing up over there. Just not sure they've ever established an inside channel.
