I mean, I guess in general it's a better way to respond, but until programs are discouraged from looking the other way and covering things up, it will continue to happen.  NCAA oversight is a joke.  They don't care about the players, the students, or anything aside from money and power.  This is why tuitions are so high and the NCAA over regulates every cent a current athlete may be getting.  Morality?  What's that?  None of your business until politicians or the press or the public give enough of a shit to push back.

Maybe I've become a pessimist, but until I see Michigan put together 60 minutes of solid, fundamental football, I won't feel confident against anyone.  Also, this talk about Martinez reminds me of what people were saying about Wimbush.  I hope the team puts it together but I'm not holding my breath.

09/12/2018 - 10:11pm The funny thing to me is…

The funny thing to me is that I think the waggles and roll outs with PA actually exposed Shea to more pressure.  Let him face the defense in the gun so he can see the pressure coming.  I hate plays where the QB turns his back to the LOS, and yes I know that plays off the under center run blocking, but WMU was blitzing with no regard all day.

09/12/2018 - 3:07pm Obviously Michigan isn't a…

Obviously Michigan isn't a no huddle team, but I wonder if it's within the scheme/terminology/scope of the offense to give Shea run checks based off of the defense's alignment.  For instance, if the defense seems to be cheating to one blocking scheme to have an audible to switch it up.

Except the O-Line play and roster turnover at key positions and injuries.  Other than that, yeah, let's drool over a coach we didn't know was great when we had him and if one bothered to look at his job since wouldn't want.

This game recap brought to mind something I hadn't thought about: You seem to be suggesting that Mayfield and Hudson shouldn't play and that Mayfield should get a RS.  I've heard the logic of RS linemen, but given the situation M find themselves in, wouldn't it be better to let the younger more talented player grow on the field?  I'm just not sure how much more we're going to see Runyan and JBB improve in pass pro.  Regardless, just getting the line to averageish would make a world of difference.  And good post as always btw.

Which is exactly why the metric is flawed.  Michigan hasn't been a great program for awhile, but going by rankings early in the season is a bad way to assess a team's value, especially when there are many other bias confirming metrics.

09/04/2018 - 7:03pm Yes, they've lost four in a…

Yes, they've lost four in a row as a program.  That includes a bowl game, three different starting QBs, and this is a new year with a different team.  3 of the 4 games were probably top 10 teams.  It's not great, but at least add context.  People's expectations cause them misery.

09/04/2018 - 6:46pm There's no doubt that we're…

There's no doubt that we're in a dark place.  This may not turn out well, but I remember the 2010-11 basketball season.  With no regard for the recent history up to that point, people were prematurely calling for Beilein's head.  After a 1-6 start in conference, Beilein kicked off a 7-3 finish by beating MSU at Breslin in a gritty classic.

Yes, football is bigger and by its nature different.  Yes there are issues that have the potential to derail the season with the tired narratives.  Saturday sucked, but it was game one against a good team in a hostile environment, and in spite of those who can't see past the negative (understandably), there were signs of improvement over last year.

The caveat on these comments is I'm hopelessly optimistic about Michigan sports, but Harbaugh does have a decent track record.  I'm at least going to wait and see how the team develops and grows before I do as my Dad has and find better things to do on game day.  I have a problem in that I have to live the thing, even if it's a train wreck, because I don't know how else to function.  I realize that can be unhealthy, but there's a football Saturday hole that only Michigan football fills, even if Richrod or Hoke are on the sidelines.

09/03/2018 - 9:55pm Look, it's disappointing to…

Look, it's disappointing to say the least to lose another of these games, but for everyone over reacting and writing the season off, it's way too early.  With all the returning players, Michigan still played a lot of newcomers at key positions.  This team didn't give up after taking some body blows, and no one is losing their shit if they make the same first game sort of mistakes against a nobody.  In fact, I would reason to guess if you flopped the Western and ND games that M would have performed much better with a game under their belt.  That isn't to excuse the performance, that's just to say it isn't the end of the world.  I actually think having folks write Michigan off could be a silver lining for the team to actually just focus on improving.

09/03/2018 - 5:54pm But this is Michigan, where…

But this is Michigan, where whatever soul dong we had has been curb stomped into oblivion.

09/02/2018 - 9:04pm I just wish there was…

I just wish there was someone on the team, player or coach, that would step up and say this won't happen again.  The mantra the whole off season was how they were going to be about it, not just talk about it.  Sometimes you need someone to talk about it non-stop until the players get better and start believing it.  I don't know who that is, sadly, but someone has to light a fire under their asses.

09/02/2018 - 4:45pm People are really…

People are really overstating things.  We can attach the tired narratives if the development continues to be lax.  This game was decided by:

a) 3rd down, couldn't get off the field whether it was a penalty, being over aggressive, losing a 50/50 ball.  This was a back breaker, and I know little about football strategy, but it seemed like guys were losing contain and getting out of rush lanes far too often for who was QB.  I realize the margins are razor thin at this level and the DTs probably didn't get enough push.  I was also frustrated by how often it seemed the defense got edged and/or was unprepared for obvious option style/QB run plays.

b) For as bad as the line play was, I think people are over reacting about play calls.  The offense moved the ball halfway decently all night, they just couldn't finish.  I don't think you can underestimate how starting in a hole impacts the game, especially when ND is probably a top 10 defense.  Clock management was frustrating, but they still got the TD and the ball back with a chance to tie.  Ultimately the pass blocking cost them again, and to me more so than the play calling.

c) Little mental errors like the botched snap and ND getting a TD on a would be INT and Gentry dropping a TD all swung the game.  It felt like M got dominated in the first half, and they did statistically, but it was a lot of little things that added up.  You can say they only made it close because ND took their foot off the gas, but I thought M played noticeably harder in the second half.  They didn't give up, and all this body language, intangible, etc. narrative bullshit won't end until they start winning.  I'm going to withhold judgement until the season plays out.  I think Mayfield and Hudson seeing the field is inevitable at this point.

Go blue...

09/02/2018 - 1:13am Wow, people are ready to…

Wow, people are ready to jump off of the ledge.  I, too, am frustrated.  What I am going to do is reserve judgment.  If they get better as the year goes along and respond to this with the right attitude (coaches included), then hopefully we can look at this as a basement of sorts.  That said, it does feel like another dong punch into the hopeless abyss of eternal mediocrity.  I am tired of feeling excited every year to keep experiencing this shit.

09/02/2018 - 12:17am At this point Don Brown is…

At this point Don Brown is getting predictably aggressive.  I thought there would be a better game plan for Wimbush considering his strengths.  Very disappointed to see guys getting out of their lanes, especially on third down when you want to make him pass.  The second TD was a bad break, but they got beat up front throughout the first half.  I think at this point on third down and long I'd settle for more conservative calls with 4 man rush and zone defense.  Aggression is great, but not when you constantly signal the blitz and get out of contain lanes.  This happened last year but Don Brown was teflon and the offense was bad enough that he didn't deserve the lion's share of criticism.  Today his unit set the tone in the worst way possible.

09/02/2018 - 12:09am What's frustrating to me is…

What's frustrating to me is that this looks like a team without an offensive identity.  I do think I'm going to withhold from overstating the line play.  It was bad but ND's line was always going to be a tough first game.  I'm all for more spread looks, but our receivers look slow.  It looks as if we can't get play makers the ball, maybe because there are no play makers in the receiving core.  In that case I don't know why we haven't been establishing something close to what Harbaugh established at Stanford.  Run a gap scheme and play off of it.  Instead we get the most basic spread scheme relying on guys to make plays one on one.  Gentry also dropped a couple passes, one that could've been a TD, but that's what M football has been for years now: woulda, shoulda, coulda.

I think Brian is spot on in diagnosing the O-line issues, and I don't think it can be underestimated how throwing Frey into the mix exacerbated issues from a terminology as well as style perspective.  At the least Warinner should provide consistency in development.

Meh.  One thing this did show (again) is that Big 10 officiating is complete dog shit and the reliability of replay is also dog shit.  It really is depressing the utter lack of responsibility, ethics and accountability of the Big 10 and NCAA.  I can't wait to get screwed in a close game again...

Also, while Shea is far from Denard, even the threat of mobility provides the extra seconds needed to get the ball downfield.  O'Korn was mobile, yet terrible at decision making and throwing the football.  The fact that Shea is prolific outside the pocket buys him more time in the pocket where Harbaugh and Co. have hopefully had significant impact.

I hope they go more spread, but I hope the offense becomes less Borges-ian.  '15 and '16 were good in that they had tons of personnel packages combined with creative play calling.  '17 was an identity free mess with few exceptions.

On top of Michigan's struggles, we suffered through the Dave Brandon era, and our rivals have been as shitty as possible from an ethical standpoint without suffering much on the field.  Our main rival to the south also has (and probably still is) cheated to maintain an advantage, which is to say nothing of their prominent off the field scandals.  MSU has a culture which somehow makes PSU look reasonable in contrast, and that's even including having a freaking Paterno on the BOT.
