Jesse Minter Interview on BTN

Submitted by Killer Khakis on December 30th, 2023 at 9:02 PM

Just watched Minter talk to the Big Ten Network media for their B1G Live at the Rose Bowl. Listening to Minter, he is so well spoken, so smart, and passionate. We see it on the sidelines with his energy and on the field with the complexity of the scheme of the Wolverine defense. I truly think he’s a better coordinator than MacDonald and Moore, and am glad Cincy didn’t scoop him up as HC last offseason (he’s from the area and his dad was a UC coaching legend). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p5hFJcDOHig

I also attached another interview I heard him give about this game against Bama. We are fortunate to have many staff members, maybe none more than Minter. Let’s go!

True, but Macdonald overhauled the defense and threw Brown's MOAR MAN CUVERIJE ON ALL OF THE DOWNZ scheme in the trash whereas Minter picked up where Macdonald had left off.

At the end of the day, we're comparing a Ferrari with a Lamborghini, so whatever. But Macdonald is also a great defensive coordinator who had proven himself in college and in the pros.

Honestly, Minter is the guy they show on the sidelines and makes me feel calm. I love his energy and have a trust in him to make the adjustments necessary to give us a chance. IDK, I loved Don Brown but Minter and MacDonald have been breaths of fresh air as our DCs.

It's not an obscene opinion. Minter has done much better scheming all year (listen to MHJ comments, S&P rating) vs Moore and his season long aversion to play action, misuse of DE, the TCU game plan last year (Brian and Seth gripes).

We are lucky to have a great OC and DC, doesnt mean many don't agree with OP.

Well, apparently everyone has an opinion. But if it's different than someone else's, you get downvoted lol. Never understand why reasonable difference of opinion get a downvote. Maybe I've been using it wrong, thought it was a neg or downvote, not a I disagree. Like saved for harsh takes and trolls. At least that is/was my conclusion after 10 years on this board.

In fairness, MacDonald brought the amoeba defense here and laid the groundwork. Players knew nothing about it and there's a huge learning curve.  I've been a big Minter slappy but to see MacDonald have a top 3 NFL defense already and I wonder what the D would have looked like here in year 3 with him, if even better.

Both great DCs. Big difference is one wanted to be a college coach and one didn't.

Recruiting is still a huge part of the job and avoiding it (like Macdonald reportedly did) is not really an option.

It is getting lame at all the buzz and hype the news media ia giving Alabama because of Jalen Milroe.  The news media has been talking about him like he has been elite all year and he is the next coming of a legend quarterback.  He struggled in 1/4 of the games this year, and only really played at elite status in a couple games.

Michigan's defense has been elite every game this year, and I really hope Minter's going to have his defense ready with fire in their eyes coming after Milroe because of the disrespect the news media is showing  them.

Yes, he does possess another element that no other of the 3 other QBs in the CFP have (although JJ at least can compete on the running level), but Milroe objectively is the clear cut #4 of the 4 QBs in the CFP. And the gap between him and #3 is further than the gap between #3 and #1

Given the variability of what happens on the field of play all "objectively" is quite questionable. Statistics are excellent at informing one of what happened but gives no indication of any of the hows or whys in this regard. If Milroe can slice and dice the amoeba Michigan defense I will give him all the credit in the world. But, right now, I believe he is pretty much a single read QB-as a passer...and I like Moore sitting back there in the catbird seat. We will see.

I think both DLs are going to give their OL counterparts fits. And I have no idea which side this is going to favor.

Eh both coordinators are good - though I think Minter is the better of the two based on the defense being better than the offense, and probably holding some bit of maybe an unrealistic expectation that Moore would have done better on offense during his 3 games as coach (despite juggling a ton of duties).

That said, I suspect one of them will be coach next year, with the other one going with Harbaugh to the NFL.

Macdonald = very good.  Minter = very good.  Moore = very good.

What two things do they have in common?   Each of their last names begin with "M" - and, they were / are very effective as coordinators for Michigan.

One of my big hopes for Monday in Pasadena is - the looks Michigan offers on defense will confuse an opposing QB and there's a mistake or two as a result.

Monday's game - like most at this level - will come down to quality of execution.  Play clean - limit turnovers - take advantage of what's available - and have fun along the way.  Play loose and to your potential.

What's getting lost in all of the (deserved) Minter hosannas is the work of the position coaches responsible for training the stuff Minter designed for Ohio Soft.

Steve Clinkscale and Jay Harbaugh deserve a lot of credit too.
