Many do not understand the difficulty of conference play-it is a different animal...it really is a "win-is-a-win" deal.

01/22/2019 - 9:06pm I suppose...a win is a win.

I suppose...a win is a win.

01/22/2019 - 1:39pm Those of us who work in…

Those of us who work in pediatrics develop a very strong bias for persons who advocate for children and against people who are averse to children. My three "bad" people did not give a damn about anyone but themselves-they were insolent and demanding. Peyton was our "public face" and got paid well for it. Otherwise he could not have cared less. It was clear that Ashley had to drag him to the floor-he drudgingly and begrudgingly performed his contractual duties...he certainly offered no kind face, encouragement, appreciation nor support...there was nothing positive for anyone when Peyton "showed up" and it had nothing to do with a "moot" point...Ashley covered for his shameful ass.

Ron Artest  and the Indianapolis Ice players were the opposite. They were most engaging and affable-a joy to have them show up-the kids loved them. Isaiah was just a very nice person. Tony was friendly but his wife was a piece of work.  I can't remember the name of the Colt, defensive captain, who was a huge supporter and donor to our oncology kids.

01/22/2019 - 1:08pm Oh look! The snowflakes are…

Oh look! The snowflakes are attacking me!!!

Sometimes we humans are simply stupid as hell.

01/22/2019 - 11:26am "Funny"??? Nothing funny…

"Funny"??? Nothing funny about our current state of affairs...nor your attempt to trivialize.

01/22/2019 - 10:33am Absolutely. Duke, Kentucky,…

Absolutely. Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and Kansas can't make it work well. MSU, last year-with all that talent, fell flat. In the larger picture, how Coach Beilein is approaching this is what I believe is the best way-on every count.

01/22/2019 - 9:09am The coin toss remains…

The coin toss remains significant in the college game. They could play two rotations to help mitigate the issue. Here, the pros should start at the 40.

01/22/2019 - 8:26am Many, many of the top…

Many, many of the top athletes have had to make a decision regarding which sport to pursue at a higher level. As a kid I "officiated" a fundraiser BB game between the Lions and our HS faculty. Charlie Sanders was a phenomenal TE but I bet he could have played pro hoops too-OMG was he an athlete!!!

01/22/2019 - 8:15am Sort of OT: A side benefit…

Sort of OT: A side benefit of being a nurse at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital was that I crossed paths with some of the greatest athletes and coaches-ever. Who the good guys and the bad guys are in real life, from my encounters, would likely surprise many. Isaiah Thomas, Ron Artest (how about that!) and the Indianapolis Ice hockey team -wonderful human beings. The bad guys: Jermain O'Neil, Jeff Foster and the king of them all-Peyton Manning...though wife Ashley was a gem of a human being...bless her heart. Lots of other good guys-Tony Dungy-not his wife though!!!, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Saturday...

01/22/2019 - 7:55am The nuances of playing the…

The nuances of playing the game of basketball well are likely greater than the sum of all other sports. I have a friend/teammate who was in the class behind me who is in the Indiana HS Basketball Hall of Fame. He averaged around 25 ppg for his 4 years of HS play. He was 6'2", slow-footed and maybe had a 12" vertical-seriously. He did have very quick hands and 4 sets of eyes...he was within range when he crossed the half-court line and was also a rebound and assist machine. He averaged over 30 points and 16 rebounds pg his junior and senior years-just looked it up (would have likely been at least 35ppg if the 3pt shot had been in effect). The way Dean played the game was undefinable-totally uncanny...and he was a riot to play with!!!  This is why I declare that basketball is unequivocally the best game to play.

Just because "Scooby's" athleticism/physical skill set doesn't jump off the screen doesn't mean he can't play at Michigan.

01/21/2019 - 10:35pm Hmm...so how/what position…

Hmm...so how/what position does he play at the D1 level???

01/21/2019 - 10:11pm I have been away from…

I have been away from Michigan HS basketball for a long time but back in the day taking over a game and scoring 39 against Saginaw would not have been considered bullying "poor competition". This kid may not be a physical high flyer but he really knows how to play the game...and he makes his teammates better...that's worth a whole lot.

01/21/2019 - 9:59pm I was thinking more about…

I was thinking more about him playing the two and his ability to take his defender to the hoop-more from power than quickness...as PGs and 2s are not typically physically strong-and he uses his body well. There are many times in this game where being "atypical" is a good thing.

Clips are so limited...does he have the quickness to defend at the 1/2? And if he can defend a 1 I could see his offensive skill set possibly translating there???...the kid sure sees the court!

01/21/2019 - 9:28pm No better time to beat them…

No better time to beat them...they were last year too...big deal.

01/21/2019 - 9:26pm ...and it has absolutely…

...and it has absolutely nothing to do with the next time these two teams play.

01/21/2019 - 8:54pm The kid does everything he…

The kid does everything he is asked-and quite well. He is coming off the bench because of his great flexibility to pretty much do it all. This has to be an interesting call for Beilein...especially as the need for another shooter seems to be growing. I wonder if/how much they are looking at Livers and Johns together at the 3 and 4...in practice.

01/21/2019 - 8:43pm I always appreciate your…

I always appreciate your assessments-you pick up on critical, difference-making traits. I understand your concern with translating to the next level...but as you note, the "howevers" in this regard are huge. To me, "Scooby's" basketball IQ jumps off the screen. I believe he would do very well in a Beilein offense because there is surely a place for a PF/4 skill set at the 2/3 slot. I have seen some outstanding passing from this kid-that declares that, here, he is exceptionally skilled. So he took over the game against Saginaw-scored 39...tells me the kid has a couple extra gears in him.

Otherwise, the 2020 recruit offer list is dead on for Coach Beilein. But Kessler remains the "monster" of this class for Michigan.

01/21/2019 - 7:01pm One can argue both sides…

One can argue both sides...many fans should just stick to "gravy".

01/21/2019 - 6:56pm The "class" of the players…

The "class" of the players FAR exceeds that of the fans.

01/21/2019 - 5:59pm There is a lot to like about…

There is a lot to like about Keilan Robinson's film. Alabama is not wanting him without great reason. I think Gattis ends up reeling him in for the good guys.

01/21/2019 - 5:57pm It is a bad HS habit that…

It is a bad HS habit that develops due to being so superior to your opposition. It will not be difficult to coach this fault up. This kid is one helluva football player.

01/21/2019 - 10:30am ...and the defense, on the…

...and the defense, on the field, had to have more than a clue as well. That is why the game is predominantly about execution...all the games...matters not what the sport. Make the play.

01/21/2019 - 10:19am The problem/fact is that…

The problem/fact is that there is no perfect solution. There simply is not.

01/21/2019 - 7:59am I do not like these recent…

I do not like these recent offers-look at them with skepticism...because...does this indicate a low(erring) chance of getting Kessler??? It seems as though Kessler would be a great fit for both the player and the coach/school.

01/21/2019 - 7:44am He could write...just didn't…

He could write...just didn't understand the game-like, really nothing about how the game is played. His defense of the Tiger organization, as the consummate homer, was indefensible.

01/20/2019 - 7:35am The kid fits into that…

The kid fits into that flexible category that enables you to forge mismatches. Physically he looks to be at least the 6'6" I see him being listed...doesn't look like he is done growing. I'm guessing the offer is based more on getting your name in the hat because of the upside he might develop into...rather than who he is right now.

01/20/2019 - 7:14am I just watched a couple…

I just watched a couple clips-which are not that informative...and I think you have this correct. In-conference play is a great leveler of the playing field. Your opposition intimately knows your strengths and weaknesses...and good coaches know how to force you toward and beat them with your weaknesses. Better teams often fall into the trap of thinking they can beat a lesser team-even with their weakest link(s). I think this happened yesterday.

BTW, I upvoted you not only because I agree with but you but to also get you out of the negative column here. I find it most remarkable how people are offended by the truth :)

01/19/2019 - 7:25pm DPJ and Nico going to the…

DPJ and Nico going to the pros after next year, and Black too while we're at it, would surely/hopefully mean that Michigan had a VERY good year.

01/19/2019 - 7:11pm It got up to about 20…

It got up to about 20 degrees here in south-central Kansas today and the "breeze" has relented to about 25mph. It was the 1 1/2 inches of snow that did the locals in though-they start driving into the ditch the minute they hear snow forecast :) The sheep and cattle are enjoying their refuge in the barn-on their beds of straw.

Just made myself a banana split...sitting about 10 feet away from our wood stove that is blazing away. Life is good.

I prefer NE and NO.

01/19/2019 - 5:29pm You certainly are a daring…

You certainly are a daring guy...2-5 losses eh??? I'll bet that all the players took a shower after the game :)

01/19/2019 - 5:15pm Looks like good potential…

Looks like good potential. The kid plays hard, good speed, quick feet, plays well through traffic...likes playing football...like his frame. Pretty good for a 16 year old kid.

01/19/2019 - 5:00pm I do not believe you have…

I do not believe you have received any "clarification" here. I have officiated with too many officials who believe the game is about them-it sounds as though this is what this call was about. Most officials do not like to officiate with these guys-and for more than one good reason.

01/19/2019 - 3:36pm When the only criteria for…

When the only criteria for being accepted is "Do you have a pulse?"....

01/18/2019 - 3:11pm What these players and this…

What these players and this coaching staff have done so far this year is quite remarkable...but not as remarkable as the hand-wringing from the insecure fans who evidently refuse to appreciate what is happening right before their very eyes. What everyone should be most confident of is that these kids are going to play the game hard and with good skill. Good lord...appreciate it.

01/18/2019 - 2:37pm It doesn't matter who "we"…

It doesn't matter who "we" is. These are principles that not only businesses but people, in general, should employ.

01/18/2019 - 12:14pm Many, including here, would…

Many, including here, would say yes.

01/18/2019 - 12:12pm Oh my...just "Oh my!"

Oh my...just "Oh my!"

01/17/2019 - 9:00pm It's too mechanical. I think…

It's too mechanical. I think it might be better if they eliminated the 3 pt. shot from the NBA...the long-range shooting skill has changed the game in ways that cannot be compensated for under the current set of rules. Like I said previously-they are too good for their own good.

01/17/2019 - 8:39pm I believe you are (too)…

I believe you are (too) correct in your assessment that Harbaugh has forced players into his scheme excessively...I believe this has been a weakness. I surely like and agree with a coaching philosophy that schemes to put your best players in the best position to succeed. That is indeed the best path to winning.

01/17/2019 - 8:25pm Yeah, look at All the TEs…

Yeah, look at All the TEs that were brought in this year :)  I have heard smatterings, whisperings from time to time of Schoonmaker having very good speed and advancing well...another size mismatch to take advantage of.

Otherwise, I feel good about getting guys in space-which includes that beast that is Charbonnet. It will be a joy to see the terror in the eyes of the opponent's secondary when he breaks loose and heads their way-I've been there done that...from the "terror" side.

01/17/2019 - 7:44pm I love basketball. I much…

I love basketball. I much prefer college to the NBA. I admire the tremendous talent of the NBA players but, quite frankly, they are actually too good.

01/17/2019 - 1:48pm I think Michigan should be…

I think Michigan should be recruiting some bigger, more rangy talents like Makari Paige, Enzo Jennings and Phillip Webb for the viper position. I believe, especially, Webb has all the skills and more to perform in the viper roll. A fairly quick-twitch 6'4" 225 kid who can cover TEs and RBs, come hard off the edge and defend the run would seem to be ideal-to me.

01/17/2019 - 1:08pm I love, love, love sports…

I love, love, love sports....playing, coaching, officiating-have done all three a lot and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect...it's all good. Football is indeed an exciting spectator sport. I have played 5 different sports very competitively. For me, basketball is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY without rival the best sport to play...in every way...not even close!!!!!!!!!!!!

01/17/2019 - 12:57pm I was 6 years old when I…

I was 6 years old when I started driving...must have been at least 7 or 8 before I drove any distance on the road. I started out just harrowing and disking but by the time I was 8 I was plowing and cultivating. The little Ford and the larger Allis-Chalmers were pretty easy but it took all I had in me to push the clutch in on that Oliver. I've driven, I'm guessing, 3-4 million miles in my life-have never been in an accident. So, I'm recommending beginning with a little 9N Ford tractor-with an overdrive that allows you to drive up to 20-25 mph...as you develop the skill.

01/17/2019 - 12:37pm This matter is certainly an…

This matter is certainly an issue from the broader perspective side. My brother who is a pediatrician in Mobile who routinely sees Div 1 kids come through his office-is given pause in this regard. And here, my wife who is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner encounters real life issues too.

I do not know what the answer is here. Sometimes I wonder if the solution might be more in the direction of no hard pads-only a helmet...as opposed to all this armor that "safely" makes one a projectile.

01/17/2019 - 8:38am I deeply appreciate this…

I deeply appreciate this site as a place to come to for minute by minute updates of significant happenings in Michigan sports.

I am deeply exasperated by the delusionary partisans who get to come here and shout people down.

Knowledgeable people can disagree.

I do not have a solution.

01/17/2019 - 8:23am Michigan is currently firmly…

Michigan is currently firmly in second place in the Director's Cup standings...behind only Stanford-the perennial winner. Penn State and Wisconsin are #3 and 4. All the Michigan teams are competitive and well-coached...they are a perennial top 10 school in this evaluation.

The further good news is that the response to the recent women's gymnastic situation seems to support that Michigan is indeed not a win-at-all-cost university. An objective, wholistic view indicates that Michigan is an elite university-the best of the public institutions.

Don't worry-be happy :)

01/16/2019 - 8:12pm Excellent post. There is…

Excellent post. There is nothing more useless than stats that define random acts. And I'm not sure why an assist is awarded for a 3 pt. shot that is made.

01/16/2019 - 5:55pm Well, I sure hope Coach…

Well, I sure hope Coach Harbaugh is  staying attuned to this site. If not, he is missing out on a lot of critical information.

01/16/2019 - 4:35pm To say that this is going to…

To say that this is going to be an interesting year may be the understatement of the year. But we say that every year, so, there is nothing particularly Nua about that.

I believe bringing in all these young coaches will be just fine...but Harbaugh and Brown have their work cut out for themselves...bringing along both the players and the coaches.
