Interactions with Buckeyes this week

Submitted by Real and Spectacular on
Curious to hear what the interactions have been with OSU fans this week. My companies rep from Toledo was talking an incredible amount of smack before the game to me, was dead silent during the game, and then proceeded to rub it in immediately after. When I pointed out the officiating I was met with crybaby taunts and claims that OSU had just as many bad calls go against them. I was furious. I'm not sure why I expected any different but I thought even a Buckeye fan would admit they stole that one. Curious to hear from others on this.

Living here in western PA I have encounters with Buckeye fans on a daily basis. I must admit that the majority have been pleasant. Saying that there were bad calls and that Michigan should be in the top 4. Also they said that it's hard to win with 3 turnovers no matter how bad the refs suck. Which is true. The only thing they consistently said was that the spot was right and there's no way you couldn't overturn the call in that situation.

Everything was fine until Jabrill won the Linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year.  Then all whiney hell broke lose on Twitter, led by 11 Warriors and some dumpy turd named Toby Girlyman or something like that.

Buddy of mine who lives in TN also texted me today, "...you guys looked good! You didn't deserve to lose. I am excited the Big 10 is back on top of CFB as a conference."

He texted mild smack in The Games in 2014 & 15. Texted during 2014 BTCG as OH routed WI. I bought him a case of beer for each W in their 2014 CFP run. Didn't hear from him this year until today.

Admitted that we were the better team.  He didn't think the officiating was that biased, but he also does not want to play us again the playoffs.

"You'll kick our asses" was the quote.  He also wouldn't let me pay off our small side bet.

Three reactions - everytime - when I bring up how badly we got fucked over:

1. "The spot was good - he made the first down".  Then they'll show me the badly photoshopped overhead pic of the stop.  When I point out there were a jillion bad calls up that one and that their pic was faked they shrug their shoulders and say "but he made it".

2. "Calls went both ways on Saturday.  Quit your bitching - you got some calls and we got some calls.  No game is officiated perfectly"  When I ask them to point out to me the bad calls that went against OSU there is dead silence.  And so far nobody and I mean nobody here has been able to show me one after I show them about 100 that fellow posters have put up here over the past several days (thanks guys).

3. BUCKS WON.  HAR-HAR-HAR!  BUCKS WON.  BUCKS WON!  O.H.......  This is my personal favorite.  No mention of the calls, no acknowledgement that our complaints might be valid, just....that.

One interesting nuggest is that of the about 20 or so people I've spoken to here since Saturday not ONE knew the background of the officiating crew.  Not one.  And the Ohio sports guys I follow on Twitter dismiss it as some sort of Michigan "tin foil hat" concept.  If you guys think people know that there were two OSU fanboys reffing that game you're wrong.  They don't.

Arguing that the reffing was biased does not imply there was any sort of conspiracy.

Refs have to make guesses on 50/50 calls ALL the time. The Spot and the 3 borderline pass interference penalties (2 called against Michigan in regulation, 1 not called against OSU in OT) were all 50/50 calls.

Now, the refs in question are no doubt OSU fanboys (based on the simple fact that 90% of sports fans from Ohio are OSU fanboys). And I don't care how objective you think you really are--if you're a fanboy of a school and you have to make 50/50 calls, you're going to implicitly give the benefit of the doubt to your favorite team. Not to mention that studies have shown that referees are swayed by the anticipated reaction of the crowd. No ref likes making a call that causes 100,000K fans to boo.

But the real kicker is this. Imagine if it had gone the other way, and Michigan had gotten those calls. Those refs would be receiving death threats. It'd be one thing if they were from Iowa but two of them LIVE IN OHIO and one of them has a son who plays high school football in Ohio. If it had played out such that Buckeye fans believed they were shafted by the refs, no doubt those refs would be living in terror right now and forced to move their families out of the state (like Herbie did).

You can't tell me all of this didn't go through the minds of those 2 OSU fanboys refs before they officiated this game. Even if they didn't intentionally make calls against, there is still such a thing as implicit bias.

The video is embarrassingly photoshopped, in the exact same way the "overhead" shot floating around the internet is. They are all just distortions of the live shot, which is at 3:37 of the video below. It's been modified to make it look like the vantage point of the cameria is right down the 15-yard line, when in fact it is shooting from "behind" the action.

They are devout, but not obnoxious. They felt they were lucky to win, but not because we were supposedly jobbed by the refs. It was more about how they felt like Michigan could bury their team, but kept shooting itself in the foot with mistakes. It was the turnovers that kept OSU in the game, and ultimately allowed them to turn it around and start challenging UM.

Of course they were elated while I was crushed. But they were almost apologetic, and not because of calls. It was because they felt lucky to be on the winning end of an outstandingly competitive game.

I've laid out my case about how OSU was 4 penalties under their season average as I showed him pics of fouls there were not called. I also sent him the articles explaining the backgrounds of the three refs. He won't admit it, but he knows the truth.

My manager is a Clevelander and loyal Buckeye. I already know he is sick of me. He actually never tried to really talk trash but all I do is repeat 2 penalties for 6 yards to him. Now it has been shortened to 2 for 6. It's like a cheap Mr Alan's sale.

that there would be sympathy from Buckeyes about a result that benefits their interest. Why would you expect that? They are what they are. They won. We lost. They get to say whatever because the final score shows them ahead. That's it. I mean this is Donald Trump land. Even if it was rigged, you build a wall and pretend nothing matters but the result. Because that's how America is going to be great again. Just because some guy who won says so.

If you can't win, then you are a loser. And never complain about the officiating.

Survivor's motto is "Outwit, Outplay, Outlast," or something like that. Hatch won the first season by lying, cheating, and doing whatever it takes. He was rewarded with the victory. We need to stop rewarding scoundrels and start standing up for what is right. Money and/or winning does not make everything all right.

and i don't know any buckeyes.  it would be unwise for any such ohio fan to choose off a wolverine who, during this time of year, is highly likely to have a rifle in his truck.

To expect OSU fans to respond to the win in any fashion resembling humility. I don't blame them; it's not their job to make us feel better, and these and other UM-boards can get a little overheated on the schadenfreude front when it comes to downfalls experienced by our rivals.

They should feel great that OSU won, however it looked. But they're lying to themselves if they don't think the gap -- which 2 years ago seemed impossibly and embarrassingly wide -- hasn't seemed to close pretty damn quick between these programs.

Every Buckeye fan ive talked to this week has been pretty understanding with my concern over the officiating.

One of the guys I work with even went as far as saying he doesnt want to see Michigan again on a neutral field

I greeted some guy in the gym wearing a cut-off "Ohio Versus the World" shirt the same way. He turned out to be my intramural football coach. His take on the game was "never leave it up to the refs" and "Michigan had 43 seniors and OSU had 43 freshman. Y'all should have killed us anyway."

Yeah I'm sick of that crap.  Michigan was still in position to win the game.  I don't like to bitch about officiating usually but this was a pretty bad performance by the refs and really feel it had an effect on the game.  Michigan lost due to its own mistakes, true.  But the poor officiating should not be dismissed or ignored.

By the way - regardless of the number of freshmen - Ohio State was still ranked #2 and loaded with top recruits at pretty much every position.  What the hell, man?  Dude sounds like an idiot.  I  really hate Ohio State more than ever now.

I've never heard of such dedicatoin to hating us...someone would actually go through the trouble to fly the flag of the team we are playing each B1G game?! Did he go so far to get himself a Hawaii or UCF flag?!?

Worst type of fan right there, just be happy with your own program

One of the advantages of living far from the Big Ten footprint is that there aren't all that many Buckeye fans around. That said, a VP in my company whom I have to deal with fairly regularly is an OSU alum and has his office decorated in disgusting Buckeye paraphanelia. I've been avoiding him since the week started.

Basically coming to me with a smile and saying "good game." No, jackass. It was not. It was completely one-sided in terms of officiating. Tainted win as far as I'm concerned. They'd be bitching just like we are if things were reversed.

I am related by birth to more than a few Buckeye fans.  At half time they each texted me that they thought the game was over and they were terribly dissappointed in their team (no props to Michigan for outstanding defense of course).

At the end of the game none of them were willing to agree the referees were terrible, only that UM lef tthe door open and OSU fell through it.

We never talked about "the spot."  And we haven't talked about the game since.

I was in the stadium, and I can say that when the first replay of "the spot" was shown on the jumbotron, the whole crowd gasped.  EVERYONE in that stadium knew they were short.  EVERYONE knew the game was over.

And then, the second angle was played and everyone knew they were going to be given 4 more tries...

I sncerely hope our year is not over and I sincerely hope we meet the on the field again with this defense intact.

In Harbaugh I trust.

A few months ago due to being inept.  So while it's been bitter, it hasn't been as bad having to hear him spew on about his team.  Everyone else on the office (mostly SEC fans) thought we were robbed.
