|08/21/2018 - 3:44pm||Four AA candidates on the OL…||
Four AA candidates on the OL seems as far from last year’s UM team as one can get. Hornibrook threw a lot of picks, but he was far more effective than UMs QBs. Even losing his best targets won’t drive him to those depths. Very little about their offense seems akin to UM 2017.

According to Sam the JBB-Hudson battle is for RT and in his opinion is currently Hudson and likely to stay that way.

I hope so too. To be fair we're only hearing "in the rotation" (2nd/3rd string) at DT behind Dwumfour who has little significant PT and maybe Kemp who just moved inside. This is not far-fetched for a 5th year who has seen the field some.

Actually, Deep Throat's source was Jack Harbaugh at Weber's.

Agreed. OP seems to think ND's unproven replacements and question marks will be hot messes, while UM's similar questions will be answered to levels not seen here in a decade. Optimism and/or homerism at their best.
I think on the road this is a toss up game. First game weirdness and big plays will be the difference.

FWIW, Nicole Auerbach may make a similar point in her article in yesterday's Athletic. I don't subscribe so I can't say for sure.
|07/24/2018 - 3:40pm||It depends on who the 1-loss…||
It depends on who the 1-loss is. If it's WI or PSU and UM wins the East & B1G then I'm completely satisfied. If it's either OSU or MSU (even on the road, even with a B1G title) then I cannot be completely satisfied.
Complete satisfaction requires a B1G title and wins in The Game and vs. MSU -- even with a tough schedule.
|07/24/2018 - 12:08pm||For me PSU is a rivalry at…||
For me PSU is a rivalry at an intellectual level, but not much of an emotional one. Maybe that changes at some point, but I care about PSU as far as winning the East, without a visceral reaction. The fans are a little chippy but I only interact with a couple.
Obviously, it does not compare to The Game at all. 3 - 17 over the last decade vs. them and MSU has been a nightmare. As an aside, because of growing up during the 70/80s I have more hatred for ND and USC than PSU.
Beat OSU and MSU this year and I'm mostly fine with a loss to PSU.
|07/24/2018 - 10:51am||Somewhat successful, but…||
Somewhat successful, but incomplete. Yes, more competitive, but 0 - 3 in The Game and 1 - 2 vs. MSU is a fail irrespective of circumstance.
2015 was a big success, 2016 was a big disappointment given the roster, 2017 was a disappointment, but more than 2-3 losses was understandable.
Lack of OL development over 3 years is a disappointment.
Lack of QB is largely bizarre circumstances with inherited talent.
This year I expect 2-losses even if the team performs well. OL and QB is still too questionable and the schedule is ridiculous. Go 3 - 1 vs OSU, MSU, PSU and WI and I'll be mostly satisfied.

I agree he took pleasure it, but in a mano a mano schadenfreude way. I loved him, and he loved winning the physical battles, but more so the psychological battles as you say. I never watched Laimbeer in college. Maybe he played with more unfiltered joy like Mo, but the two enjoyments seem quite different to me. Glad I rooted for the Pistons and UM bc both would be easy to hate otherwise.

|03/15/2018 - 11:16am||I think this is an important||
I think this is an important difference between the two. I think Moe is driven mostly by passion and raw emotion -- raw joy and enthusiasm. He admits a part of it is calulated or at least he's self-aware. I'm not sure Laimbeer's passion and enthusiasm ever came from joy. I think it came from anger, defiance and competition, and he definitely calculated his opponents reactions to his antics. He honed his schtick.
|03/13/2018 - 12:52pm||Do you really disagree with||
Do you really disagree with Ace? Neither of you think this is a transition year now, but Ace thought before the season that it would be. Did you have UM being a top-4 seed, winning 13ish B1G games and winning the BTT? Most did not due to the transition from DWalt's team. Even if one thought MAAR and Mo would be our two best players their leaps have been impressive, and the rest of the team especially Z have been at least as impressive.

|01/29/2018 - 3:23pm||It feels like @PU & vs MN in||
It feels like @PU & vs MN in 2017 is significantly easier than @NW & vs NE 2018. Still must win the games on the schedule, but I think 2018 is tougher. FL was a pretender. Perhaps ND will be as well, but I think they'll be better than FL was, and it's a true road game.
Gotta be in contention for a conference title and need to win 11 games to satisfy me -- tough schedule or no. 2016 and 17 disappointments demand a rebound to excellence. EDIT (this does not mean JH is on a hot seat. It's just time to win impressively and despite difficulties).

Not so fast, indeed. When public sentiment is monitized it can move mountains. Otherwise it is hit and miss and often loses out to money.
|01/26/2018 - 10:09pm||Whether it’s sexual assault,||
Whether it’s sexual assault, DUI, larceny, academic fraud or whatever, it seems naive to think head coaches don’t wield undue influence as do wealthy donors and administrators who want to protect the institution, program, and their own asses before protecting students and athletes. I think it is likely widespread on a smaller scale, and we’ve seen only the most egregious, or the most ridiculous. We will see more of it, I think. I hope victims are being supported and heard more than before. Theres obviously a movement to change the way sexual assault/harassment is reported and handled. This sea change will be revealing and probably ugly, but also for the good.
|01/26/2018 - 5:17pm||The Nassar case is unique in||
The Nassar case is unique in scope. I was speaking more specifically to, "The biggest issue? Complaints involving athletes were routinely investigated and handled by athletic director Hollis' department, and sometimes even coaches, she says." I think this is far more typical and long has been. Collusion with campus and municiple police departments and even prosecutors seems more typical as well. The attitudes you've cited don't seem much different from what I suspect has gone on in Happy Valley, Waco, Louisville and other campuses.
EDIT: We need to demand better as alums and as a society. Fixing MSU is a known quantity and a priority, but the problem remains elsewhere.
|01/26/2018 - 1:47pm||It's sad that this is not||
It's sad that this is not unique to MSU and very likely not unusual nation wide. It'd be surprising, under intense scrutiny, if any FBS institution has handled Title IX and assault cases well and without bias. It seems likely to be a spectrum between disappointing to appalling. Let's hope that changes.
|01/25/2018 - 3:55pm||It's not just about "busts"||
It's not just about "busts" and the argument starts with NFL scouting observations about WRs and QBs in the OP (and in the Jet's observations about Devin Smith). These observations seem logical.
Meyer is the 2nd most successful CFB coach in his generation. He recruits NFL talent as well as anyone but Saban. His best NFL WRs are Thomas, Harvin, Louis Murphy and Braxton Miller. Given the level of talent he recruits and the success his teams have, it would seem there would be a more impressive list of Meyer-developed NFL WRs.
Over the course of the same time, UM produced Braylon, Mario, Breaston, and Avant (in a short window)...and had too many dumpster fire recruiting cycles and seasons since.
|01/25/2018 - 1:52pm||Are you arguing that Meyer's||
Are you arguing that Meyer's WRs are NFL successes because of Thomas' breakout or are you arguing that WR's from pro style passing programs don't produce any better prepared WRs than college spread programs?
The Jet's reaction to Devin Smith and the dirth of impactful Meyer coached WRs indicates to me that his system doesn't prepare guys to succeed at that position in the NFL at the rate of talent he recruits, or success in CFB he has. They seem a decent case study for the question the NFL seems to be posing.
|01/25/2018 - 1:08pm||Apologies if I'm misreading||
Apologies if I'm misreading what you're saying. I don't think the NFL increase in passing and spread Os necessarily changes the demands on QBs and WRs. I don't think the NFL will adapt to "what college is giving them" by becoming more simple on O for WRs and QBs. That would lead to NFL Ds making QBs and WRs look worse than the bottom third of the league already does. The gap from OkSt O to Patriots spread passing attack is still huge.
EDIT: Isnt this also why Meyer's WRs take so long to impact an NFL squad?

|01/17/2018 - 9:49am||I think the term football||
I think the term football widow applies to CFB and the NFL where there is no "on the road" recruiting. One can be absent from family just by being at the football facility 20 hours/day. Recruiting can't help, but this is certainly something wives/families must deal with.

McKeon is good at catching and blocking, and was the leading receiver (low bar, yes). He's not Tyler Eifert, but I look forward to his play next year. I think Metallus will have a battle on his hands, but as a junior probably has a good shot at being better than his mostly okay play this year.
Replacing these guys with 5* wouldn't change this year into a championship year anyway. This year was about OL and QB and QB and QB.
EDIT: Losing Friday would feel like shit. Losing him to OH would feel like eating shit (one imagines).

On a small sample Livers is outshooting Dunc from 3. I think he does everything else better, but could be persuaded I'm' wrong about something. Crean gushed over Dunc's (help D) on the IL-broadcast.
I'd much rather see Dunc subbed in strategically to gain favorable matchups at both ends of the floor. The athletic deficit on Saturday will be helped when Livers is on the floor.

"Harbaugh wanted him to play LB here" is an overstatement. At the time, Sam Webb reported that JH said 90% RB with LB as a possibility. I understand Dillon's decision as 100% at BC was more attractive to him than 90% at UM.

These games featured a very balanced passing attack/threat. They also included more successful jet sweeps and non-manball yards gained compared to this year, IIRC. This year it seems our OL is running without a passing threat, and mostly with manball RB-type plays.
I get the desire to work on the passing game, but I was very pleased to see UM dominant on the ground when the D knew UM was running and tried to stop it. Irrespective of competition, that is new, and a lament from last year.
