To Which M-Clan Do You Belong?
Over at MVictors.com, Greg Dooley has collaborated with Craig Barker of The Hoover Street Rag (aka MGoUser Yostal) and MVictors contributor Lew to develop:
...what “we” look like at [this] given point in Michigan history.
Clan descriptions at the MVictors link above.
I put myself squarely in the Fierce Pragmatists camp with a dash of Decatur (natch). How about you? Of course, if you're looking at this, you're also an Obsessive in Craig's 80-10-10 casual-serious-obsessive breakdown, so don't even bother with that. That is, as they say, a given.
January 14th, 2011 at 9:45 PM ^
obviously thats why you don't take the hat off
January 14th, 2011 at 6:24 PM ^
Fierce Pragmitist here. None of the others really made sense, though I sense that I too have a touch of Decatur in there. In fact, I know I do since I still defend Rodriguez to people.
January 14th, 2011 at 8:40 PM ^
I'll fit firmly in this 1%. The University will outlive us all and I will enjoy my time in support of it and allow those entrusted to lead the football program worry about those things that i can't control.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
There can be only one.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
In RR we Trusted...but I have recently switched to the Hoke takes OSU PERSONAL clan.
January 15th, 2011 at 1:04 AM ^
Hoke will decimate all, after we over night parts from Japan
January 14th, 2011 at 6:27 PM ^
Put me down in the Ufer camp- cotton pickin' blue.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:28 PM ^
Fierce Pragmatist with a touch of Rebellion and In Rod We Trust.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
Me too!
<high five>

Not just from a recruiting standpoint but Lloyd never had a viable coach on his staff that could have become the head coach after he retired. Most teams with a coach at an advanced age have a guy on board who can take over. If not they go out and find one the way West Virginia did so the transition isn't so difficult. Just look at what dantonio had. Treadwell came in and they didn't miss a beat handing Wisconsin it's only loss till the Rose Bowl. He then gets picked up by a pretty good MAC program in Miami and Ronnie is buried at Eastern.
I still get chills when he said either DeBord or English would be "excellent choices" during the search.
January 14th, 2011 at 10:37 PM ^
I could write a short story on how we got to this point in time starting at NMU when Lloyd was an English major. Lloyd should have never got a chance to be HC. He was DC of the worst defense we ever had and is named interim HC.
DB was endorsed by Lloyd for the AD job so you knew he was going to be loyal to LC and hire Hoke, just as LC was loyal to Gary and has blocked Les from ever getting an offer to coach at UM.
January 15th, 2011 at 12:20 AM ^
You make it sound like Lloyd was a GERG-esque DC. In fact, he was DC for eight seasons, five of which ended in Big Ten championships. He was also a very highly regarded secondary coach.
January 15th, 2011 at 4:36 PM ^
Basically I feel like all this is mainly Lloyd's fault. From the DB recruiting to not supporting RR, he's got us where we are.
Is there any credible evidence that Lloyd didn't support RR, other than the fact that Carr (who has always liked his privacy) didn't make many public statements? From what I've heard, our transfer problems in 2008 could have been worse; Carr reportedly contacted a bunch of players and challenged them to stick around.
January 17th, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
Carr did make a public statement in 2009 in support of Rich.
Then Drew Sharp tried to turn Lloyd's support into a negative thing with this:
January 14th, 2011 at 10:00 PM ^
Me three!
Fierce pragmatist with some rebellion and a tad of Bo tossed in from when I was in school.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
wow, im like the only lloyd loyalist here huh?
or is the rest of my clan just locked away somewhere in bolivia?
though i should say i do frequently vote fierce pragmatist from time to time (like the reagan democrats)
January 14th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
I think Bando would admit to being in your clan. I'm sure there are more, but can't think of any off of the top of my head.
January 14th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
I have some Lloyd Loyalist tendencies. I definitely think a lot of the recent criticism of him has been unfair. Having said that, I don't think Hoke (or anyone else from the Carr tree) was a viable candidate three years ago. I think his performance the past three seasons (when he went 25-13) opened the door for him.
January 14th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
I never thought I was a true Lloyd loyalist until I saw how many people on this board seem to blame him for AIDS and Al Qaeda like he was John Navarre. For instance, I would have thought that Rodriguez going 15-22 in three years would tend to silence the faction of people who claimed that any fool could win the 9+ games per year that Lloyd did ... but apparently Appalachian State is the only thing people remember. Then you get morons like Beavis saying that Lloyd is the worst thing to ever happen to Michigan.
So ... I'm a little bit in my cups at the moment, but I'm mostly a fierce pragmatist with some Lloyd loyalties. I really thought Rodriguez was going to take us all the way ... I was behind him all the way to the bowl game ... but man, GERG fucking Robinson.
EDIT: I forget what all the categories mean, but fierce pragmatist sounded pretty badass. Like bloodthirsty vegan or something.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
Cotton Pickin Blues with a sidecar containing a shot of Decatur, a shot of Bo and a shot of Rebellion.
Is Brady Hoke in maize and blue facepaint going to yell FREEEDDDDOOOOM?
January 14th, 2011 at 7:14 PM ^
William Wallace was being vivisected in that scene, so I would say "hopefully not."
January 14th, 2011 at 6:33 PM ^
In Rod I Still Trust. Dominate the ACC with Clemson, Rich.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:36 PM ^
with a foot in about 6 different clans:
Bo/Rebellion/In Rod We Trusted/Fierce Pragmatist/Cotton Pickin' Blues/Decatur
I respect and appreciate Carr and his contributions, but I feel no particular loyalty to him.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:08 PM ^
You're a mutt?
January 14th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
his nose is cold.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:37 PM ^
This is a humongous slice of MGoBrilliance. Now all we need is someone to unite the clans. And do a little something like this:
January 14th, 2011 at 6:57 PM ^
your nom de plume is effing Moe Green. I don't care if you spout total nonsense, you'[ll always get a free pass from me.
January 15th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
bangin' cheerleaders.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:18 PM ^
In the year of Our Lord 1317, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets.
They fought like Scotsmen and won their freedom.
Forever.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:40 PM ^
I noticed that there was no category called "GERG Worshippers".......
As for myself, I am going to have to go with a smattering "The Rebellion", "Fierce Pragmatist", and since he was starting out his tenure when I was there, a hint of "Lloyd Loyalist", but not all that loyal. Far more pragmatist there.....
January 14th, 2011 at 6:41 PM ^
I'd be "in Rod we trusted" but my take on Hoke would be "fierce pragmatist".
January 14th, 2011 at 6:45 PM ^
Some "In Rod we trust" with The Rebellion mixed in there. But given my age I also really like Lloyd, but I wouldn't put myself in the Loyalist camp
January 14th, 2011 at 6:51 PM ^
That is the only "clan" I am aware of. A person is either Michigan or they are not.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:53 PM ^
January 14th, 2011 at 6:53 PM ^
I trusted Rod, but gradually lost said trust after watching him
a)hire his coaching conference buddy to run the defense and
b)undermine said d-coordinator for second time in three years, trying to implement 3-3-5....
the kicker? Dismissively saying "Schemes are overrated"
January 14th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
What category do you fall in if you just want to see Michigan win, and you enjoy it when people say nice things about your school and your football program?
I was very sad to see Lloyd go. I guess that makes me a Lloyd loyalist.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
As usual I don't fit in anywhere. I feel like a neanderthal (truly believe I have that DNA), is there a cave bear clan on that pie chart?
January 14th, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
I still remember that Neanderthal rape scene like 17 years later. Not sure why they had that book in my middle school library.
Broud man. Fucking Broud.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
I wish I could be more of a pragmatist, but I have to put myself in the Cotton Pickin' camp. I have a difficult time being logical when it comes to the Maize and Blue.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:05 PM ^
lloyd brady clan
January 14th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
oooh! so you're a maverick, eh?
January 14th, 2011 at 7:20 PM ^
Fierce Pragmatist clan without a doubt. Surprised there's not more than 5% of us out there...
January 14th, 2011 at 7:24 PM ^
I'm half rebellion and half In Rod We Trust.
January 14th, 2011 at 11:55 PM ^
....with a dose of Rebellion skepticism
EDIT: after reading eyebrowse below, I have to add a smidgen of In Rod We Trust - I knew he had to go, but I just can't stop getting pissed when he continues to get kicked while down.
January 14th, 2011 at 7:45 PM ^
with some left over In Rod We Trusted. Does that even make sense?
January 14th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
lots of sense - do you find yourself wanting to just let go,but every time you hear RR continue to get kicked you feel the need to speak up?
January 15th, 2011 at 8:45 AM ^
*sigh* sometimes, I mean, if I'm honest it has something to do with my mom and dad forgetting me at the grocery store when I was five. I guess I still have some abandonment issues to work through....
January 15th, 2011 at 9:06 AM ^
Wanted Rich kept - knew he had to go.
Looking forward to Septbember 2011 more in curiosity than the giddy anticipation I held from this past September to December 31st. I won't hold a "reversal" in W-L against Hoke, as every new coach should be given a transition period.
Expect Hoke to succeed "Lloydishly," but feverishly hope he exceeds those expectations.
For better or worse, psychologically I resist change and am a "glass half-empty" kind of guy. I was ambivalent about the RR hire at first, because I didn't think the spread-n-shred could work in the B10. I was wrong about that, and hope I'm wrong about Hoke's "ceiling."
GO BLUE!
January 14th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
Greg did great work with this.
Let me say this about "Fierce Pragmatist" since that's where I self-identify. It's probably 1% of the overall population, but disproportionately greater among the "obsessive" 10%, in part because it's a group that tries to balance the quantative data with the qualatative senses of a people business. That's how we end up here.
I'm also glad that I an part of a fanbase that can appreciate a good Stephen Decatur reference.
