I'm mostly referring to…

I'm mostly referring to stuff like DUIs and D&D -- not violence.  Which most definitely happens because the place I used to work at is where many patrons went before/after to buy their alcohol and they often arrived drunk (having driven no less).  As for the smell, you wont catch it downtown because that's NW of the downs.  But go hangout in the area to the east, or slightly southeast, and yeah you can smell it depend on the weather.

I worked up the street from…

I worked up the street from the downs for 5 years in the late 90s; lived in the ville for a few decades.  Good riddance.  Smelled awful.  Brought a lot of needless crime to the area and required constant police presence paid for by the city (all of the tax benefits went to the state).  It's an eyesore right in the downtown area, almost anything else there would be an improvement.

Do something productive with the site.  Perhaps even a Jake Moody statue though on the corner.

Not a fan of Stephen A, but great video nevertheless.  If I may.... set the video to double speed and time to 2:47. Play, and enjoy!!

3 year old is tough.  Try maybe the Creature Conservancy, Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, or the Leslie Science Center.  Or perhaps a local pre-school runs a camp.  I feel like for that age group though it will likely only be half day and the parents will stay for the activities (not sure what you're looking for).

My advice would be to skip A2 and just keep going North; spend your week at Camp Michigania.

They have programming for all ages, all week.

I work on campus with umich…

I work on campus with umich students. About 90% of these clients are from out of state. The majority of these out of state students — always to my surprise — opt to skip the Ohio game due to the conflict with the thanksgiving holiday.  So to answer your question, yes, having The Game on Thanksgiving weekend reduces your OOS student attendance by a large margin.

No, sir.  Matt Millen is…

No, sir.  Matt Millen is much more traumatic to the greater Metro Detroit area.

@M squared - say what you…

@M squared - say what you want about Lloyd but don’t criticize him for use of university funds. He was notably paid less then almost all other coaches in the big (despite often winning big championships) and he regularly made large contributions to mott hospital (before his grandson fell ill). Again, critique away re RR but he most certainly did not waste university funds while he was here for his own gain. Much more the opposite.

It definitely sounded high

It definitely sounded high caliber but the echo around my office made it he’d to tell.

But I would characterize it as much less time - like a minute - for the first police to arrive on scene. Rusting being said, waive more arrived every minute until there was a dozen cars.

I don't think anyone was.  It seemed like the situation was de-escalated shortly after the police arrived.  Honestly I'm shocked it hasn't hit any of the other local news sources yet.

Ill informed and dangerous comment

I am a former member of a surgical organ transplant recovery team. I worked for about a decade, procuring all types of organs and tissues. Your comments are misinformed and misleading. Statements like yours muddy the waters and keep many from becoming organ donors. Generally I can avoid the siren call of “someone’s wrong on the Internet,” but congratulations - your comment was so uninformed and potentially damaging that here I am replying at 2AM.

Patients are seen by medical professionals at hospitals. Nurses and doctors have NO IDEA if a patient is an organ donor as they work to save his or her life. It is only AFTER they have done all that they can to save that persons life that they finally consult the family or donor registry. Most injuries result in organs being ineligible for transplant. Only patients who are 100% BRAIN DEAD - which must be verified by a neurologist using diagnostic tools - can be elliglbe to donate.

The local organ procurement agency is contacted next. Generally they send a representative to the hospital to establish that the patient is eligible for donation, and after doing so begin the process of cataloguing the donors blood type and other immunological data. They then consult the match lists and begin contacting the hospitals that represent possible organ recipients. Once all of the organs have been matched, surgical procurement teams from the different reciepeint hospitals are dispatched to the donor hospital to simeltaneously remove the organs. In the case of some tissues like heart and lung, we have at maximum 4 hours from the time an organ is removed until it is sewn into a receipt and receiving a supply of oxygenated blood. Time is of the essence. Helicopters, ambulances, and jets are used to expedite the process as much as possible. It is VERY VERY RARE that a hospital treating an organ donor is the same facility that treats a reciepent. The local procurement agency acts as a third party and handles matching and thus absolutely prevents any gaming of the system.

Recapping:
1) the physician treating the donor has no knowledge of the patient’s status as an organ donor
2) the physician treating the donor has every incentive (ethical and legal) to all he or she can for the patient
3) the decision to donate only happens have the patient cannot be save
4) the local procurement agency handles the matching of organs and acts as a third party to avoid possible ethical conflicts
5) it is exceeding rare that the same hospital that treats a donor also treats the recipient.

Next time consider the implications of your comments regarding an ethical issue before you post and try googling the issue before Sharing it with the world. You may not realize it, but their are plenty of people who share your uninformed world view on this subject and insist on lobbying against donation by spreading lies and falsehoods. Every one is completely entitled to make the choice for themselves in regards to donate, but let’s at the minimum allow them the simple respect of making that decision with the correct information on the issue.

Strampel gave a speech at an

Strampel gave a speech at an information session I attended regarding the armed services program for medical students.  He was the keynote speaker.  He was a bombastic asshole, constantly extoling the virtues of MSU COM (great program) and going so far as to brag about how he has monthly meetings with the deans of the other three medical schools in the state of Michigan and how he has served in his position longer than any of them (he then tolds us to "connect the dots").  Tonight he's in jail.  Dots are connected, William.

It's my understanding from MGoCOMmers that he's a sketchy chauvinist.  The stories I have heard are creepy, and I think it's well known that he ran that medical school with an iron fist.  It will be interesting to see if COM cleans house with other bad actor Strampel cronies, and now under current scruitny, how many of these stories from the past turn out to be true.

Fucking Nichols!  Because of him, I lost a boatload on Devlin McGregor stock.  I still think Provasic would've worked too had they only done more testing.

Faculty and students need to

Faculty and students need to initiate the recall campaign for BoT.

Kudos to your efforts. We all lose when MSU is run into the ground by blowhards and politicians.

Yeah, that's exactly what I

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking as well... how will this affect PSDs and season ticket sales... against the backdrop of next year's home schedule.  I am a die hard fan and have had season tickets for 20 years but in truth I am starting to question the expense.  It's not that I am not willing to pay to go to the games, but more it's an issue of when I have extra tickets (or someone's stupid wedding to attend) I can't sell my tickets.  There's no secondary market; the tickets seem worthless.  And if that's the case, then why the hell am I bothering paying the PSDs...

What's worse is that the denizens of today's classrooms are perhaps father than ever from caring about what's happening on the field.  For a few years Brandon badly poisoned the well, but we are well on our way to losing an entire generation of donors now.

This blog is definitely the canary in the coal mine.  When you strip away the jackasses crankin' ridiculous criticisms and get beyond the dicktooth banter on twitter, you drive to the essence of what's really going on -- even tried and true bluebloods are experiencing apathy.  Shit, Brian's usually a good writer ... but (at risk of being banned here) even he sounds broken and it's his job to write about this stuff. He just phoned this one in.

Ultimately if this is what's happening on the outside, I can only imagine how frustrasted and dissapointed players and people are feeling inside of Fort Schembechler.  It's pretty definitive now that we are at a turning point -- we just don't know yet in which direction.  Personally I still have some faith left to give, but next season should be interesting nonetheless.

And I should say I am not

And I should say I am not trying to imply in any way that he is complicit with all of this and I do not posses any knowledge on this issue.

Rumors I've heard have been in regards to him running the school with an iron fist.  At the speech, he bragged at length about being the longest serving dean of any medical school in the state (and openly insinuated that was for good reason).

The name not being discussed

The name not being discussed enough here is William Strampel.  Heard that guy talk once... and heard many rumors since... and would find it hard to believe that someone that boisterous wouldn't know what is going on within his own medical school.

If he did know about the abuse and (potentially) for many years he may face the same scrutiny as the former PSU president.

"main issue we have with

"main issue we have with classes nowadays are mandatory attendance and in-class attendance checks (quizzes, clickers, etc). "

iClicker should be forbidden at the Univ of Michigan.  It's a crutch and leads to poor educational practice like social pass and weak lectures.  And yet more and more profs keep moving toward it.

Don't want to come to the class?  Think you can ace the class without attending?  You're an adult, dont come.  The exam is your responsilibty, prepare as needed.

Credit should never be issued for attendance; this is not kindergarten.  Exams are assessments designed to measure competencies.  All courses should have educational goals or competncies to be achieved by the end of the semester.  Effort is not a competency for any discipline except for perhaps PE.

Grades for lame-ass homework assignments?  Even worse, online quizzes **written by the publisher of the textbook**? (like CHEM 130)

What an epic waste of time.  Not only are these assignments so poorly designed to the point of being useless, but they indoctrinate laziness and coddling among students.  We assign practice problems as a suggestion for you to prepare for the exam.  If you choose to not prepare for the exam and not try the suggested problems, that's your choice and as such you will live with any consequences (grade).  (like CHEM 210)

Professors want iclicker to make sure students pay attention.  OK, so here's an idea - try giving a better lecture.  If you actually think iclicker or mandatory attendance is an option, you're so out of touch with the elements of pedagogy that you should probably stop whatever you are teaching and pause to educate yourself about how others learn.

It's really not rational though to expect more - professors are never trained in how to educate others, and often when they are it's by other professors who have no background in pedagogy.  As long as this paradigm persists, our institutions of higher learning will continue to be severely flawed in their pursuit to educate.

Whomever said earlier in this thread that this is not a financial transaction is correct in a sense; if it were, universities woul;d have adopted a much more successful educational strategy years ago.

When baby is sleeping.... you should be as well.

Agreed.  Emphasis on waiting

Agreed.  Emphasis on waiting until after "4th trimester."  We began around 6 months.

When bare skin contacts

When bare skin contacts asphalt, hardly any time or duration is required before a rather extreme injury is incurred.  The rough nature of the asphalt immediately rubs the skin raw and then bloody, and in the worst cases can wear deep below the dermis and into the fascia.  Most of the time however, abrasions tend to terminate midway through the dermal layers of the skin, representing what would be similar to a giant blister.  Nerve endings that are typically burried deep within the skin are now exposed and irrated, and likely inflamed as well.  Pain of this nature unfortunately can be very hard to treat, and may require extraordinary amounts of opiates like morphine (think enough to perform surgery) to achieve even mild comfort levels during wound care.  Compounding matters, the inital cleaning of the wound requires all lodged dirt, gravel, and road debris be separetd and removed from the skin.  To do this, a plastic bristle brush is used with fine 1 inch bristles on one side and a sponge on the other.   Again it is difficult to achieve proper pain management during the wound cleaining process because excessive concentrations of opiates have a side effect of supressing breathing.  Finally, once a wound is cleaned, it still needs regular wound care (cleaning) treatments twice a day for many weeks.  If the wound becomes infected or if antobiotic opintment builds up and is not properly cleaned away after every dressing change, the wound may require surgical debridement to remove the infected areas and the process begins anew.

Or you can just wear all the gear, all the time.  (stick to leather and kevlar)

This is what the brush looks like:

1) Take the Motorcycle safety

1) Take the Motorcycle safety class at Washtenaw or Schoolcraft CC if your in SE Michigan.

2) Wear All the gear, all the time.  This means no skin shows. Helmet, leather jacket with armor, leather gloves with armor, leather or kevlar lined pants, motorcycle boots with external ankle support.  Perforated leather is pretty comfortable in warmer weather.  Stay away from jackets and pants that look like they are made of jersey-mesh material.  Your gear will be EXPENSIVE.  Try to find lightly used kit on eBay, except never buy a used helmet.  Don't cheap out on this stuff - it may save your life (and will cost around $1,000).

3) Stay off congested roads during your first few months (like Ford Rd or Washtenaw Ave)

4) All the gear, all the time

5) Skip the scooter and get a 250-500 cc motorcycle.  The bike is more fun and more maneuverable, and the smaller displacement engines are easier to learn on without having the power to get you into danger.

6) Only wear a full face helmet if you'd prefer to still have a chin remaining after an accident.

7) All the gear, all the time.

8) Start on a used bike.  A small displacement used bike should run under $3000, and you can sell it for what you paid when you are ready to upgrade.

There are a lot of

There are a lot of out-of-staters who seem to think that NYC or SF rental rates apply to AA, and this has driven some insane rents in these days.  The rates in these high-rise buildings are often over $1000 per month per room.  Moreover, the dirty secret is that the buildings are not well maintained, and some have major outages (elevator, hot water, etc).

These buildings tend to be a social status thing, with students feeling like they absoulutely MUST be in a certain building with certain people or their life WILL end.  For better or for worse, I regularly work with college students and it's amazing how much they stress (often at the expense of academics) over who they will live with and where every lease-signing season.

My kids are still young so it's easy for me to talk but personally I'd set the budget and say live where you want on "x" dollars.

Finally, I live on North Campus and a 2500 sq ft colonial just sold for about $250,000 in a nice area.  If your're ready to drop $1000+ a month on rent, why not get a whole house for about as much and she can rent it to her friends?  Not to mention you can rent it when you're done for over $2000 a month.

Dude, I saved an impossible

Dude, I saved an impossible amount of money living in the AXE house.  Doubt it is still the case, but used to be that rent dropped $100 a month during the summer, and it was already half of what other places were charging.

I'll take anal bum cover for $7,000 !!

I once did a study of health

I once did a study of health plan minimums in every state for the largest HMO in the country. Without wading into politics here, the ACA minimums raised the bar in pretty much every state. So I don't disagree it's possible your ACA plans is worse, but for an overwhelming % of people their ACA plan covers more.

Also you probably had no claims. In the days of insurance rating, a white 35-45 year old male with no health problems would have paid next to nothing for bare bones coverage. The flip side of that is that people with cancer or congenital diseases couldn't get approved for coverage, regardless of the price.

Now that they have done away with insurance rating people (and forbidding Pre existing conditions) the additional price is being spread over the entire group.

Sorry your paying more. Just thought I'd explain why.

Unless of course your name is Josh. Then it's just because the world hates you.
