OT: Ann Arbor summer day camp for 3 year old

Submitted by Jurisprude on August 10th, 2023 at 3:04 PM

Texas alum here looking to escape the heat next summer. I'm very close to convincing my wife that Ann Arbor has everything we want in a summer destination. Now, I need a little assistance closing the deal.

By next summer, we will have three girls: 5, 3, and infant. We have plans for the first and third during the day. But we haven't found summer camps for the middle girl. Does anyone have any ideas of where to look? I appreciate any recommendations.

3 year old is tough.  Try maybe the Creature Conservancy, Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, or the Leslie Science Center.  Or perhaps a local pre-school runs a camp.  I feel like for that age group though it will likely only be half day and the parents will stay for the activities (not sure what you're looking for).

My advice would be to skip A2 and just keep going North; spend your week at Camp Michigania.

They have programming for all ages, all week.

Check the Parks And Recreation page for the city. There are normally quite a few listings depending on the week / month. Some of the programs are at specific parks like Buhr or Fuller. Argo might have one too, although the Argo Park stuff is usually for older kids because they've got the kayaking / rapids option, I think.

Saline, which is right next door, has quite a few programs despite being a smaller community. There are plenty of good options in Washtenaw County generally if you can't find one in the city proper.

Strangely, 3 of my Texas coworkers have/are going to Michigan this summer, separately. Seems to be the place in this summer heat. My recommendation, any place will do if they're that young. Just going will be a good adventure, but they could get burned out pretty quickly on travel. How long are you planning to stay for? I'd recommend just camping at a good park to give you 'rents plenty of options if you need to cut it short. Tahquomenan falls has one of my favorites, by far, and is very well equipped with plenty of infrastructure, incredible scenery, touristy shopping, and a good restaurant, though it's about as far from Ann Arbor as you can get in Michigan.
