Today’s Football Team Activities

Submitted by WhoopinStick on July 24th, 2022 at 10:56 PM

Slow news day so I thought I’d provide an update on the Football team’s trip around the state.

Today started with dune buggy rides at Silver Lake, then they visited the historic black resort town of Idlewild where they helped restore one of the historic buildings, then on to Arcadia Bluffs golf course where they had dinner and watched the sunset over Lake Michigan.  (I’ve played Arcadia Bluffs and I can say the view from the clubhouse is spectacular.   If you’re ever in that area, even if you’re not a golfer, it be worth it to stop by and have a drink, or meal, on the patio!)

Not sure about tomorrow but I am guessing Sleeping Bear Dunes and then something in Traverse City.

I believe Freshman are heading back to Ann Arbor tonight but the rest of the team will keep going.

Michigan has so much to see and do   Glad the players are getting the opportunity to take some of it in.

Go blue!

Since this is actually good content, I'm going to assume you just fat fingered the "Tasy" post and repeat my comment from that one (non-sarcastically this time)

Thanks for this post.  Mostly I'm glad that I now know Idlewild is a real place and not only is it in Michigan, but it's only two hours from Kalamazoo where I grew up.  My mind is kind of blown.  I'm assuming the Outkast album of the same name was inspired by this Idlewild?  Here's a short article of the history of Idlewild for those who like me had no idea this place existed.

I spent a summer or two helping neighbors bail hay back in the day.  I always seemed to land the job in barn, lifting and stacking the bails to the rafters.  As I recall, it was about 120 degrees in there - have to wear long pants and sleeves to protect from the hay - the dust is filling the lungs.  We'd be out of water by noon.

I consider those days more a rite of passage than a job.

j/k.

It's really cool they're getting to do this. I spent too many years living in Michigan without experiencing the cool shit throughout the state.

Yes, Idlewild has made progress in coming back to life.  I've driven through/bicycled there several times over the last 50+ years (relatives have cottages near Baldwin and my father-in-law owned 20 acres of deer hunting land for years just northeast of Idlewild).

While Idlewild won't ever go back to being what it was in the mid-20th century when it thrived due to segregation, it's good to see the place being revived.

Arcadia bluff is spectacular. Golf (hitting balls against the Lake wind is quite fun) is awesome and so is the dinner/sunset. Very romantic. Wife and I had a great time at the bluff.

Glad our players get to the see the beauty of Michigan.

It’s a shame the House of Flavors in Manistee closed up shop. That would have been an obvious destination for a double scoop of orange-pineapple.

The stairs leading to Tippy Dam would have offered great conditioning.

Both the ice cream and the stairs have damn near killed me.

Umm, this is a no-brainer if anywhere Idlewild - JONES HOMEMADE ICE CREAM PARLOR in Baldwin. I think it’s been there since Idlewild was a going concern.
I also think this was the place I ever noticed a Black person, when I was 2 or 3 years old in probably 1959 or 1960. But I do misremember on occasion.

+1000 (if I could)

I can vouch for that, I'm jonesing for some JONES HOMEMADE ICE CREAM after reading your post!

I've been going to Jones for cones since about 1960 when my grandparents bought a cabin on Little Star Lake (just a mile or so northeast of Baldwin), other relatives of mine now own that cabin and three other cottages on Little Star.

BTW, the annual Troutarama Festival was just this past weekend, I missed it this time as I was out of state all week.

Does anyone know the schedule for the rest of the week, or where I could find it? I checked Google with no luck.

The family is taking a trip to Mackinac City and the UP this week, and did not know if we would be anywhere near team.

Thanks

I saw some pictures of them scraping paint on that building. I bet with 100 able dudes, you could get a lot of work done in a few hours.

I find the difference in people's dispositions towards this trip, as opposed to the overseas trips, fascinating from a social perspective. It would appear that in some people's minds that students having educational and (forgive me) transformative experiences is only "acceptable" when they have earned it by being successful.

I remember it being a pretty small (yet vocal) group that bitched about the summer trips.  My memory was the majority of the board was pretty positive about the opportunity these kids were getting by being able to travel overseas.

As with many things it's easier to remember the outraged minority voice.  The " I wish he would take them to Indy" crowd has lost a little ammunition, but don't worry those that want to bitch will find a way.

Glad they have this opportunity! Talking about Traverse City and the northern part of the state reminds me so much of so many great summer vacations we took up in Petoskey when I was younger. In my opinion, one of the best places to be in the summer.

There was also some really great, amazing Polish restaurant I think about halfway between Petoskey and Mackinac that we'd drive up to every time we went. Pretty sure its where I learned to like pierogis, but right on the coast and some great outdoor seating out back that backed right up to the lake. Think it was an inn as well.

One of the so-far unmentioned benefits of the 2022 Michigan Football summer trip is the gorgeous weather they're enjoying right now.  While most of the 48 states and much of Canada and Europe is sweltering in oppressive heat and extreme drought and fighting massive wildfires, we're enjoying deep blue lakes and rivers (they're filled to the brim, too!), thriving cornfields, emerald forests, and pleasant cool breezes through wide open windows .

You can bet these football players are enjoying the heck out of it, too!

You're killing me. There's nothing like laying in bed at night, windows open, the sound of crickets... I won't be able to enjoy that until November (if I'm lucky).

I could see Harbaugh arranging a race up the Dune Climb at Sleeping Bear. I would pay to see that.

For those that have not experienced it, the Dune Climb is a massive and extremely steep wall of sand that runs directly up from Lake Michigan. I'm guessing it's about a 250 foot vertical.
