Buyout is $1.5M. I'll go away if they pay me that. No hassle. So $1.5M salary and then $1.5M buyout to equal $3M total. Worry free. I'll go away and they'll never hear from me again, promise. If they wanna talk, I am willing to listen.
I will gladly accept the head coaching job of the University of Michigan basketball team and I'll do it for a measly $1.5 million. Take it or leave it. I'll get shit canned, probably mid-season or earlier, but I would save the AD a heap of money. And probably set the program back a little. But the money saved would be (might be but probably not) worth it.
I take absolutely no joy in this but I completely understand and agree with it. It was the right thing to do. I loved Juwan Howard the player but it was apparent that he was in over his head as head coach as Beilein's guys and culture slowly left the program.
Truer words have never been spoken. The ratio of pie, or cake for that matter, to ice cream is 1:3 or even 1:4. The pie (apple or some type of berry) must be warm and the ice cream must be vanilla. Substitutes = none.
These are exactly my thoughts. After the first handful of games I thought for sure this was an upper half of the B1G and NCAA tournament team. I can't help but think the internal strife between Howard and Sanderson severely impacted Howard and the team. The team started going backwards, things snowballed when key guys got injured and Howard couldn't or didn't know how to turn it around, and then the whole thing crashed and burned in a big way.
Just one more game to suffer through and it'll be over. I guess I can't even classify this as suffering when you know the outcome is going to be a double digit loss. Negative expectations are the norm this season. Last season as well. Apathy is in the house.
This is my first time watching the team in probably a month or more. Same shit, different game. There is 14:40 left in the second half and Michigan is down 16 points. Awful defense, awful offense. Why am I watching this?
JJ has all the upside potential. And he is a battle tested competitor that knows how to win, has an incredible W/L percentage, and makes the plays necessary TO win. He plays within his role but can open it up when needed. He can run and throw with accuracy. He is mobile with elite speed. He routinely dissected collegiate defenses and much more often than not made the right decisions with the ball.
I would take JJ in a heartbeat if I was an NFL team. He and Caleb Williams are in a category by themselves. Drake Maye and Daniels are in the next tier down.
These scouts appear to be highly guarded against giving high ratings for fear of said player being average, or a bust, and an NFL team wasting big money in the process.
I never understood the draw to snowboarding. I am a lifelong skier and I find it easier and more enjoyable, especially when falling down.
I love Mammoth Mtn. Been there several times. If you can catch a snow storm during your visit you will be knee or sometimes hip deep in powder. That area is a snow magnet.
Juwan would've been much better off just taking the entire season off to recover from heart surgery, for his stress level and his job. Doing so likely would've 100% secured his job for another season because Warde would've chalked this shit show up to the head coach not being there as the reason for the epic collapse.
I'm with you. I saw the Kenneth Grant rumors, some Mason Graham noise. But this is the first I heard of Will Johnson bolting. And I am glad that it is debunked. We need that nucleus of strong players on defense to stay to keep the train rolling along in 2024.
But Juwan has obtained head coaching experience in his current role -- almost 5 years of it! And all the mistakes are still happening. How many more years do we beat our heads against the wall as we wait for him to learn and get better? I have no idea what a reasonable amount of time is for a noob to learn the ropes but is 4 full seasons and part of a 5th not enough? It's not happening. The fit is not right or he is just not good collegiate HC material.
EDIT: I am probably restating things but wanted to also say that he has been involved in basketball his entire life. And coaching basketball for a long time as well. So he has the background for the job and the skids should've certainly been greased. It's not like he's walking into a job designing space satellites. This is his wheelhouse and so the learning curve really should've been a season or two.
Right. And beyond that he is proving it live that he is not a good college head coach. He may be just fine in the NBA. Or he may end up being a really good NBA coach some day if he gets that opportunity. But the 4+ years of data with Juwan as a collegiate head coach suggest that he is not good and things are only getting worse. People might say he just needs more time. And I would agree if there were any positives in the trend. But damn, everything that I can see is trending poorly for this team under his leadership.
I agree this was an odd move although it was generally applauded publicly because of the "shout out" to Martelli and his long-time service in coaching. But Juwan had already missed a significant chunk of the season due to his heart surgery. The team was flailing and did not need its head coach to be off for yet another game.
There are many other ways to recognize Martelli than to hand over the reigns yet again to Juwan's sinking ship.
I've lost interest in college basketball in general this season because Michigan is terrible. So I haven't followed Dickinson since Michigan fell off the map early in the season. I hope he goes on to win a title with Kansas though.
That in a nutshell sums up my fandom. I don't care enough about basketball to watch a bad Michigan team. But I would reserve time to watch football every Saturday when RR and Hoke were coaching bad teams.
Clink and Elston probably believe that time spent in the NFL as a position coach improves your chances of elevating your career to DC or higher, in college or the even the NFL. Look no further than Mike MacDonald and Jesse Minter for examples. Both were former position coaches in the NFL prior to getting DC jobs. MacDonald was a DB and LB position coach with the Ravens before his DC gig at Michigan. Minter was a DB position coach with the Ravens before his DC gig at Vandy.
Woops! And to think I was at Michigan during his playing days makes this a bit more embarrassing for me. And I also missed that statement in the write-up. I'll take the deserved lumps.
It would be a dick move if Harbaugh submarined Moore by going behind his back to talk Minter, Herbert and Elston into leaving. I can't imagine Harbaugh going about it that way.
For me, the choice would be easy. Minter, Herbert and Elston did not graduate from Michigan. They have no ties to the school other than the fact that they were employed as football assistant coaches there. They just crested the mountain top of college football. Then they are given a choice to go to the NFL with Harbaugh who has been successful everywhere he has been. An icon in football. And by all accounts he is a great guy to work under. He fights tooth and nail for his coaches and players. These guys are likely going to make more money in the NFL. And you are going to LA where the weather's fine and the sun shines most the time (to paraphrase Neil Diamond). OR, stay at Michigan, make less money, work for a new and unproven head coach, worse weather, deal with the portal/recruiting/NIL.
I don't like it as a true blue Michigan alum and fan. But I can't blame the assistants for leaving.
The train is pretty clearly off the rails and the head coach has more or less painted himself into a corner with his temper, his roster and his recruiting. This is not to mention that his starters and bench appear to be going through the motions. There is no upside to next season if Juwan is retained for another year. In fact, next season looks like it will be even worse.
The program needs a fresh start. Don't let this problem fester.
I lived in San Diego from 2001 to 2011 when the Chargers were in SD. It felt like the city had a lot of diehard fans and really loved their Chargers. Moving to LA where there is already an NFL team may have made $$$ sense but was stupid from a fan support perspective, IMO.
I was never a fan of McAfee on Gameday and I hadn't watched his show until just now. I admit the Sherrone interview was really good. And I like the format of his show where he gives a bunch of guys some air time. Good stuff.
I'll be honest, at the beginning of this season, I was fooled into thinking we'd be pretty good this year. That St John's game had me thinking "huh, this could be something," but how wrong I was.
I was exactly the same. I am on record, in this blog, for stating pretty much this after the SJU game. Then we inexplicably lost to LBSU by playing zero defense. I thought LBSU was just a blip after we gave Memphis a hell of a scare. But no, we've won only 4 games since the SJU game on Nov 13.
It's Juwan's responsibility to right the ship and he hasn't done anything resembling that.
It really sucks that arguably the two best Michigan coaches of all time in basketball and football, JB and JH, both coveted jobs in the professional leagues. If both guys retired as Michigan coaches they would have buildings and statues named after them in their honor. If you want a legacy as a sports coach, there is no better AFAIC.
I second this. My brother was a high functioning Michigan engineer (Engineering Physics) and went on to graduate with a Masters in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. His Masters thesis involved having to learn and write Java script and C++. He fell in love with programming during this time and went on to become a software architect after graduating from MIT. He bounced around for a few years, went from a big company to two startups in succession before landing at a company that developed software for commodities trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Made a ton of money in a handful of years. But the hours and stress from the job were ultimately too much for him and he quit. He is now spending his time as a board member at a few tech startups.
Long story short, there are jobs that can get you rich quickly but nothing is free in life. You pay back that boatload of income with your time and added stress on your soul.
As blunt as it may sound, he’d like to make a lot of money as soon as possible.
That was me. And 30 years later I am still trying to make that happen.
In all seriousness, I push every young person I know to engineering. But engineering is not a get rich quick discipline unless you are a savvy entrepreneur who doesn't mind sacrificing their life for a handful of years to build a business based on some tech novelty.
If Michigan launched a national search for the new HC I would understand JH raiding the cupboard as a way to say "F U Michigan for not listening to me". But Michigan almost immediately hired the guy that Harbaugh wanted to be his successor.
I expected Minter to be gone. But Herbert, and the rumors of Clink/Elston/Newsome? I understand JH wanting to build his new staff with his trusted agents. They are great. But I don't have to like what he is doing. Doesn't sit well with me.
Jaybaugh I understand. But Clink? I thought there were rumors of him becoming DC at Michigan.
Michigan needs to make some power moves quickly. But I am losing faith in Warde to do so. Clink, Hart, Elston and Newsome need to stay, pretty much at any cost.
Herbert going to train Herbert. What, one Herbert wasn't enough?
In all seriousness, I hate this move. My hope is that Jim Harbaugh encouraged Ben Herbert to stay but he just really wanted to keep working with Harbaugh.

Fair points. But at least he would also be aware that Craig James killed five hookers.
This blog provides opinion on the M basketball culture almost daily, and it's free. Warde could've saved a shit ton of money just by visiting MGoBlog.
There is some missing information. Assuming a right cylinder of 8 inch diameter and 2 inch height, the answer is 150.8 sq in.

You're not the only one. I don't bet against Michigan ever except for today. Crap-ola all around.
We're too good for our own good.
Yep, apathy has set in. Apathy and BPONE. Is BPONE reserved only for football because it may apply to basketball right now.

The facts were presented, both good and bad, and finished with spot on opinion at the end. Nicely done!
I agree. It feels like it's over for Juwan but ultimately that is up to Warde.
I would've had a Foggy Mountain Breakdown if we didn't get a DL coach quickly.

I have to presume that out of courtesy, Harbaugh called Sherrone and asked for his blessing to interview / lure Elston. At least I hope that happened.
I would be much more cynical if we were talking about a potential top 100 basketball commit. Too soon? No.
The train is pretty clearly off the rails and the head coach has more or less painted himself into a corner with his temper, his roster and his recruiting. LOL. I complete agree with you but this line of reasoning is a real thing. Like who wouldn't want that?
Part of me thinks Harbaugh is plucking our guys to force Warde into paying them more to stick around.
