OT: It's Pi Day, so let's talk about pie

Submitted by Blue@LSU on March 14th, 2024 at 7:55 PM

Happy Pi Day, y'all!

I'm not sure how, but I came across this map of the "most searched pies in every state" in my newsfeed. I was surprised to see that Michigan's is "Sugar Pie". I've never even heard of it. And no Pecan Pie anywhere in the South?

For my money, I'll take a good old custard pie any day.

So what do you say? What is your favorite pie? Savory or sweet?

All I know about pie, is the Thanksgiving leftover pie has tasted so much better on Sunday the last three years. I'm not sure why but I hope this trend continues.

Reading the title too quickly I thought this was an update on the Private Investigators Ryan Day hired in order to eventually embarrass himself further by losing to his rival even though their head coach was suspended. To which, will we ever find out the truth?

To answer your question, so many wonderful pies out there, but nothing beats cherry.

I don't see an acknowledgement?  But whatevs.  I was just trying to head off all the "what are these people thinking" posts, which happened anyway.

Just because people are searching the Internet about a particular pie, doesn't mean that's what's on their table.  For instance, a family that eats apple pie all the time won't need to Google it.

/ Mom made a mean apple pie but almost never any other kind
// If I never eat apple pie again, I won't complain

I’m an avid pie maker. Favorites are apple and peach. As for savory pies, it’s a toss up between chicken pot pie and shepherd’s pie.

That’s a good question. I may do some research on that. Chicken pot pie sometimes doesn’t have a bottom crust but it’s still called a pie. But an apple pie without a bottom crust could be called a crumble. And then there are tarts, which have bottom crusts, sometimes top crusts, and a filling but it’s the tart mold or tin that defines it as a tart and not a pie.

Apparently, in the UK in the early 2010's, someone submitted a petition to the government to make the definition of pie as something that has "a pastry base, filling, and most importantly, a lid." They call the top crust a lid. The petition only got 6 signatures and needed 10,000 to be considered so obviously, not a top priority in the UK.

My backyard growing up was my grandparents 60-acre fruit farm, primarily apples but also peaches 🍑, tart cherries 🍒, and pears. So I do have some degree of expertise and still know how to make an occasional apple pie.

That said, what's your favorite pie apple Wendy?  I know mine, my mom and grandma had "pie-making" day every fall, when they made a few dozen apples pies for the freezer. Mostly one particular apple 🍎 variety.

Grandpa had nearly a dozen varieties of apples in their orchard but there's a few that were best for pies.

When I lived in Buffalo, I would visit an orchard that had a bunch of heirloom/heritage apple varieties. The kind that you don't find in a store anymore, but are absolutely delicious. Most of them are hundreds of years old: Esopus Spitzenburg (Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple), Rhode Island Greening (supposed to be the best for pies), Roxbury Russett, Yellow Bellflower (probably my favorite)...

Apparently, there's a heritage apple farm near Ann Arbor that I'd love to visit sometime if I'm ever in Michigan in the fall.

Tart cherries are one of my favorite summer fruits.

Tree-Mendous Fruit Farm in Eau Claire (Berrien County) was my go-to for hard-to-find apple varieties until they closed about 5 years ago.  I have since moved from that area into the so-called "fruit belt" of West Michigan near GR.  Fruit trees now everywhere.

Strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, or black berry pie with the morning coffee. Left over pumpkin or apple pie with bourbon at camp after the evening hunt watching highlights from the game.

Frito pie is a big deal out here. Usually it’s a bowl with Fritos at the bottom, then topped with some combo of ground beef, beans, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and red chile. Muy delicioso. Highly recommend.
You dump all that in a bag of Fritos for portability but that’s not my preference.

My wife has made spaghetti pie - it's bascially: make spaghetti & mix with sauce. dump it into a pan (pie or otherwise). cover with cheese and bake. (prolly more complicated than that?). Kinda winds up like a cross between spaghetti and lasagne. It's perfectly fine, but hard to imagine it as a "most seached"

And yeah, there are shepherds pies and pizza pie, but when I think "pie" (which I do often) I'm thinking of dessert.

that map is manure pie.

best pies are blueberry, raspberry and a good apple pie.

pie must be served in a 1:3 ratio (pie is first number) to vanilla ice cream.  pie must be warmed.

i'll have words with anyone who says differently.

I agree and I have room for KEY LIME PIE and Peanut Butter Silk Pie for a change of pace.  My daughter and son-in-law requested Michigan 4-Berry Pie for their wedding desert so the table had a small wedding cake surrounded by hundreds of single serving 4-berry pies (some apple, peach, and cherry in for variety.)

The circumference of a circle is 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582 times larger than its diameter.

Only approximately however - not exactly!  Pi has MANY more digits (infinitely more digits) than this, of course!
