You are clearly a judgmental…

You are clearly a judgmental person. Your anecdotal situation is not universal.

What I described is common and well known psychologically.  Not just for relationships but politically and more.

If two people in a relationship are self aware enough to be able to be above this then that is great.  That takes introspection and vulnerability.  If you have that great.

But people make decisions and then look for evidence to support their decisions and ignore the evidence that refutes their decisions.  This happens in love, politics, and more.  Just because you don’t fall into that category doesn’t make your situation universal.  This has nothing to do with me personally. Don’t be a judgmental…

The love hate thing is true…

The love hate thing is true.  Your GF or wife loves every little thing you do and vice versa. But then something triggers the cognitive dissonance in the opposite direction and the mind (the GF or BF) looks at every little thing (those same exact things) as support for why their partner is annoying.  Same with politics.

Never heard of “Ask a Manager”

It was more likely the…

It was more likely the culture which, from reports, had favoritism and anger issues. The evidence is there.  If you are in that culture, and it’s coming from leadership, you’re going to be looking around silently shaking your head.

Culture issues have more of an impact the longer they exist.  Year one was zero impact and his sons weren’t there yet.  Year two would have only been a minor impact.  It’s hard to coach your kids. But that wasn’t the only problem.  These reoccurring anger issues were likely to pop up a heck of a lot more inside the program than we can see.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a team or business.  Bring in new leadership with issues like this to a successful business and it takes three years for the thing to start tanking.

Football had the opposite culture.  “No man is more important than the team.  No coach is more important than the team.”

Michigan Man never meant…

Michigan Man never meant Michigan connection. It did mean character and integrity, which is one place where Rich Rod certainly was lacking based on what came out later in his career.

Warde should have assembled…

Warde should have assembled his top three weeks, if not months, ago. You don’t wait until after the firing.  Succession plans should always be in place for when coaches leave and you didn’t anticipate it. That should be a basic function of the AD.  If not then shame on Warde.

Edit: I would assume he has as well.  I was responding to the OP which suggests he would start now making a list

Firing Howard two days after…

Firing Howard two days after the season should be expected.

Up until now, the fire Warde vs Warde is doing a good job behind the scenes points of view are all speculation.

The next step, though, is all within the AD’s scope of responsibility and this is where Warde’s legacy will be made.  If he is a great AD then they would have made a list of their top 3 possible candidates long ago and have a plan to execute a replacement hire in 2-3 weeks.  On the other hand, if the plan is to start a committee and hire a search firm and spend a month shooting blanks then I will join the Fire Warde chorus.

Michigan Man only ever meant…

Michigan Man only ever meant to Bo and people in the building as someone with character and integrity and who is all in on Michigan.  The idea it meant someone with Michigan ties is fan fiction.  I think you are saying the same thing

Frieder left Michigan for…

Frieder left Michigan for more money. That’s it.  He followed his mentor Johnny Orr’s example.  He was offered the ASU job after Gene Keady turned it down and was given 20 min to make a decision.  This was not years of frustration.

Sure, Michigan as a program, including Canham, Chrysler, and Bo as ADs, didn’t feel it had to pay competitive compensation and has since changed.  But Bo, Frieder, Orr, and others were offered more to leave and only Bo didn’t take it.

Frieder only started blaming Bo after Bo died and couldn’t defend himself. And that alone is a week assholish thing to do just because he wanted to change the one blemish on his legacy.

He said at the time in 1989 that he did it for his family (more money and better weather) and that “his reputation will probably suffer for it”.  That’s not a guy who left because of Bo. He left for the money and once Bo was dead he started trying to fix his reputation by throwing the other guy under the bus.

Why do you have a need to…

Why do you have a need to label people as one or the other? That’s one of the problems being discussed here.  Just the suggestion that if someone is labeled a conservative, or liberal, they would be disliked IS the problem. In my experience, when you can get past the labels and the bs and talk about real issues, people find a lot of common ground.  When solutions to those issues are turned into misleading fear-triggering soundbites thats also a problem.

As most have said he is…

As most have said he is mostly a human rights based liberal.  But even his religious based opposition to abortion doesn’t include banning it. There are plenty of people who are against abortion but believe in a woman’s right to choose.  I believe Harbaugh may be in that camp.  And there are plenty of people who attend church every Sunday who are left politically and who are more religious than people who claim to be religious on the right.  So it is always surprising when people want to pigeon hole someone like Harbaugh as a conservative just because he wears his belief in god on his sleeve.

I remember living a block away from Detroit street while in school.  It wasn’t so expensive back then and it was just a small little deli.  It sounds like they are everywhere now and the price has quadrupled.  That’s too bad.  The food is still amazing.

I lived in NYC and ordered a reuben at one of the famous delis.  It was garbage compared to Zingermans.

And given the uncertainty, the portal, nil, and more, I don’t see how he can turn things around.

So let’s discuss who can we get a year from now?

Anthony Carter.  He wasn’t a bust in the pros, but because he went to the USFL ( the surprising part) we didn’t get to see him set records in the NFL.  I understand this isn’t what the OP was looking for, but AC was the most disappointing Wolverine as far as not getting to see him tear up the NFL in his first few years.

Ski, don’t board

I’m a…

Ski, don’t board

I’m a lifelong skier

With the shape skies now, skiing is easier to learn AND easier to master.  There is more to master as you get good at it.  And cooler.

Beginning snowboarding means you will end up on your ass a lot and at the end of the day your ass and back will be sore.  With skiing your muscles will be sore but thats it.

With skiing, it’s far easier to get around than on a snowboard.  Easier walking to the lift, traversing to anywhere, and getting on and off a lift.

Definitely take a lesson before you go.  Skip all group lessons, you will be wasting your time and will be standing around waiting a lot for all your fellow beginners to pick themselves back up off the slopes from all the falls.

As a beginner, expect to only ski a half day.  Ideally get a private lesson each half day.  With a private lesson you will learn 10x as fast.  They can skip any intermediate steps. There is a lot of technique in skiing, so lessons are critical. Some technique is counterintuitive.  You will need to learn to first comfortably control your speed and safely stop.  Then you’ll learn to parallel stop, get on and off a lift, parallel turn, get back up on your own on a slope and put your skis back on, and finally do it all on a slightly steeper slope.  If you know how to skate, that will help you learn how to skate across a flat traverse to the lift.  If you can learn that all before you go you might be able to go on your own the second day.  I don’t recall how fast an adult can learn.  I taught my kids at 3 and 4  and it’s definitely not that fast.  Whatever you do, make sure you first learn to control your speed and stop…for your safety and others.  I remember an out of control, self taught, 20 year old beginning boarder crashing into my 4 year old on the beginner run.  My 4 year old was in great control on his first day out.  It was as horrible as it sounds.

You won’t be acclimated for the altitude at Mammoth or the muscles you need to use.  It takes three days of skiing before you are acclimated. I do sprints up steps.  Not the fake steps in a gym that move for you but real steps like the stadium.  Work your way up to ten sets of 50 - 100 steps or similar.  I do this so that my first days aren’t wasted.  Even if you are an expert skier you can’t ski if you are winded after two turns.  With such a short trip, any conditioning ahead of time makes a big difference and you’ll have more fun. With the right conditioning you could ski all day.

Don’t expect to ski with your buddies. It’s not happening unless they are also beginners.  Since you are thinking about boarding I assume they might be boarders.  That’s often what determines what people choose.  My kids and their friends all ski.

Make sure you save some energy to enjoy the apres ski with your buddies.  There will be fun places to meet at the end of the day and some fun places (you might need to lift it up and down) on the mountain.  A beer never tastes better than after a hard day of skiing.

Fear is your only enemy.  Don’t lean back.

Rob,

Except you left up…

Rob,

Except you left up some political bath water.  All my follow up posts on that post were to remove the politics.

Sure you have the right to disagree and you are the mod.  You get all the power.

The challenge is I actually went through some training (officially a non partisan, non profit) on this stuff so that we can recognize it, get past it, and have conversations that bridge the divide. (Those types of conversations are not possible on the board because it requires discussions of specific issues).  Nonetheless, my radar could easily be more attuned than others.

The cost of leaving it up is that it perpetuates a false truth along with mgoboard and Brian advocacy.  That broad message creates a belief system that undermines the conversations people could be having (again not on here but elsewhere in their lives).  And I have to get through this crap if I do outreach. Even if they changed it to “some people … and some people…”, which is more true, it still undermines the conversations good people are trying to bridge.

But you are the mod and I am by choice just an anonymous poster.  If you have a DM or a Twitter (i have an account but am not active), I can send you the training details if you’re interested.

Musk’s is different. …

Musk’s is different.  Globalstar is also a LEO constellation that’s been around.  Same with Iridium.  Most 2way communications has to be LEOs.  The difference with musk is his micro satellites operate at about one third the altitude of globalstar’s which is where the performance difference comes from.  He took advantage of the new smaller cheaper micro satellites and the cheaper launch costs.  Others were trying to do the same.

I am not a fan of Musk and…

I am not a fan of Musk and agree with your sentiment.  He seemed to turn more friendly to the Russians.

When I say “difficult” business model I mean his P&L and how many customers it will take to cover his operating and replacement costs.  I think it’s a stretch.

With Ukraine, (not addressing the russia cut off issue) the way i understand it is that Musk offered it to Ukraine for free, and PR, and then threatened the US government to use some fund to pay for it.  That’s probably legitimate and the US would only be paying for the number of dishes at a volume discount.  That’s probably a small fraction of what he needs.

I forgot about the Russian geo fencing thing.  He was probably threatened.

Yes very true, Starlink is…

Yes very true, Starlink is very low orbit which is why he needs so many and that gives you the speed.  The others are definitely slow. $120 seems expensive but he can charge whatever he wants.  It’s definitely better than nothing.  The business model is still difficult given he’s mostly only able to serve sparsely populated rural areas or countries with no infrastructure.

I see it’s working

You don’t understand the…

You clearly don’t understand this trope and there seems to be much you don’t understand.  That’s part of the problem.  We can’t get into the specifics on this blog.   I’ve also been on both sides.  I also happen to have some actual training and experience in these issues.  There is middle ground to find for most Americans but comments like the poster’s above have the opposite impact.

Wow, $120 is a lot.  That’s…

Wow, $120 is a lot.  That’s what you get with a monopoly.  $50 average for fiber many places and $20 promos.

I’d like to see the business model. Other global satellite communications companies had huge infrastructure costs from funding a global constellation, couldn’t compete where terrestrial providers operated, and could only pick up too few subscribers in rural areas or at the top of Everest.

Maybe there an opportunity to use Starlink for backhaul and share it with neighbors.  Do you have neighbors?

It’s too close to the “both…

This is the problem, repeating the “both sides are equal” trope without knowing it. Politics are “tricky” and so are “no politics”.  The comment should be deleted.

Wow, another no politics post that can’t help but make a political statement, either without realizing it or by being incredibly smooth
