META: MGoBlog 3.1 Bug Sticky

Submitted by Seth on February 22nd, 2022 at 10:27 AM

This a thread for any bugs you find on the site after our server migration and Drupal 9 transplant. It will stay atop the message board for a few days while we live beta the site.

Known issues:

  • Open Live Writer integration is broken (this is on the server and they're working on it)
  • The "Reply" button is missing on the message board.
  • The sandwich dropdown menu isn't working in mobile.
  • New posts not showing on message board.

Comments made in this thread that aren't relevant (e.g. general complaining, anything regarding ads) might get deleted so it doesn't get cumbersome. Human Element doesn't run the ads on the site so please keep this thread clean from that.

first, thanks seth and brian for engaging in another upgrade.  i'm sure there is time, effort and money involved and it's not easy.

second, what might we expect from the upgrade once its up and running?  new features, smoother operations, etc.

On my Iphone, cannot access the drop down menu to access the MGoBoard only from the home screen at mgoblog.com. However, if I go to the MGoBoard from my history, I can access the drop down menu there.

Congrats on your time machine, Seth. Should make your research into the early 1900s teams much easier.

(Don't think this is a bug - other board posts have the correct date, but posting it just in case.)

@kvnryn: Good eye. That's how I manipulate the order of the message board. When we have a sponsored post you might note they're posted 24 hours in the future as well.

I can also hide that manually (see the change above).

Same issue as Rickett88 on Android - can access "hamburger" menu in upper left corner on pages OTHER THAN the main page. No access on main page.

Obviously, also no Reply button.

Well, I can't reply to check if it's fixed but I've still been getting kicked to the last page when I reply to someone in a board post (if multiple pages). This has not been happening on the main page replies.

I second Rob F's points point-out. This is sad to me as I have never had a comment as up-voted as the one I made earlier today.  How am I supposed to be feel validated in life?

I'm on Desktop and Chrome.

If you shrink the screen to the Tablet/Mobile breakpoint to get the hamburger menu, open the menu, then drag the screen to be bigger, the nav menu weirdly gets stuck in the middle of the screen and stays there even when scrolling.

This might be related to Gulo’s comment but hoping this update fixes the board post bug on mobil. Whenever I reply, or post on say a game thread, it messes up the whole thread.

If It’s set to “newest first”, after a post it changes to “oldest first” and sends me to a different page. The only way to fix it is to exit the thread, then return to the thread. Have to do this after every post.

This happens using safari on an iPhone.

bug here: starting at my 'activity' tab, you'll of course see all the threads you were part of, and a red parenthesis with a number for new additions, say, (2 new), for instance.  but, you hit that thread or the '2 new' and you sometimes get sent to a page that has the OP and an empty comment box, nothing else, meaning no comments appear.  or, you get sent to a page that has an OP, an empty comment box, and those tiny page numbers, say, 1    2    3     .  those numbers will be in a bold color and you can hit them and it will take you to the top of whatever page number you hit.

(new) no longer appears to designate the new posts in a thread since the previous time you visited that thread.  As a mod, it's been a valuable tool for me when I have to go to a lengthy and volatile thread.

I mentioned this yesterday in a different thread, but mgoblog.com no longer automatically redirects to https://mgoblog.com.  Instead, you get the plain old http.  This means that login info is lost between accesses to the site.

Old bug from 3.0 as well:

The web app overrides mobile orientation lock feature on Android, not allowing portrait screen lock in app.

Phone: Pixel 3 Android 12

This is also my formal confession to being a degen MGoBlog phone reader in bed most AMs / PMs :)

One thing I've noticed for a while, and it may be related to the ads, so you might not be able to examine this or fix this. I'm on Firefox, and even with javascript enabled, I don't see the text of any main post - whether accessed from the front page (clicking after the jump) or the forum. Just, in this case, the headline "META:MGoBlock...", a submitted by line, thumbs up and down, the ability to add and read comments, the tags. I think everything but the text of the post itself, which I can only see by viewing on the page source.

Not sure if this applies, but this site still takes a long time to load on apple phone. Not sure if the same for android. It’s minor but you’ve probably had fewer clicks from me because of it. Not mad, just can’t fit in a refresh in a few seconds if I have them.

During big games this site just shut down and could not handle the high volume of users. Will this new upgrade be able to handle high volume days?

So unrelated to the actual reason Seth posted this but man does this situation give me PTSD from an earlier life.

Several years ago I was a partner in a firm whose very lifeblood of income depended on our IT platform.  If it went down for any length of time we lost a ton of money (the work involved almost exclusively next day delivery of replacement parts so if you couldnt take/fill the order that day - it was lost) so we always mandated system updates be conducted on a Friday after the office closed.

So what should've happened was the system was upgraded/changed/modified on Friday night.  It was suppose to carefully check over the system on Saturday and make any needed bug-fixes Sunday so when we came back to work on Monday everything was basically working.

What did happen, and i mean EVERY TIME, was the IT department would make the upgrade/change/modification on Friday.  Assume everything was working correctly and go home.  Monday when we fired things back it was ALWAYS a complete clusterfuck of things not working correctly and we'd try to fight through it as the IT department made the neccessary fixes.  And when we'd ask them what the hell happened their answer was ALWAYS the same.

"That shouldnt have happened."

Rinse, repeat.

If you go to a user's profile and click on one of their comment links, sometimes it goes directly to the comment, sometimes it just goes to the main post. Same behavior on blog posts and board posts. I don't know why it happens, but my hypothesis is that it depends on if the comment is on the first page of the thread or below the first page. This bug has always been there, it is not new to 3.1. FWIW, I bring it up because I would like to come back to certain comments and check in on the discussion later.

bug from before 3.1, still there: sometimes as i scroll through a discussion thread, I'll find an upvote/downvote icon highlighted (full blue) on a specific comment that i've never read before or engaged with. like votes get randomly generated on my behalf periodically.

i'm fairly certain my account hasn't been hacked.

Sometimes it already indicates I upvoted a post when it's the first time I am seeing it.

... Probably should fix and update this where you can see the amount of upvotes vs downvotes like it was for a period of time on mgoblog (instead of just seeing the net amount)

Just curious, has there been or will there be any thoughts in the future about bringing the app back? I'm sure there was a good reason that it was sunset, but it was really handy to have and definitely miss having it.

I know my question isn't entirely intended for this thread and if it needs to be deleted, no problem. Just curious.

Beyond that, the only thing I've really noticed has already been brought up here a few times. Takes a good long while for the initial page to load on my iPhone. Once I'm in the site I can usually move around pretty quickly but getting the site to open takes a solid 30 seconds.

My main frustration has always been that after making a simple post in a thread, I would be kicked out to some random place in the thread.  Not back to my post so I can read it, look for errors, etc. It was somewhere random.

It is especially annoying during a game thread with many posts coming in quickly. In that case, I'd be sorted by "Newest First", so after posting, you'd think I would just be taken back to my new post and I could pick up where I left off.  But nooooo, that did not ever work.

After posting I never could figure out how to easily get back to where I previously was in the thread. The sorting criteria was saved, but if I clicked "Read More" next to "Newest First" it never went back to the newest post.  The only way that I found to get back there was to completely exit back out to the board, then re-enter the thread and start over. It doesn't exactly lend itself to a good experience, and this is one of the most basic operations that everyone does.

It's possible that some users found a work-around for this because I haven't seen many people complaining about it, just the occasional mention, which has always amazed me that users in the game threads weren't up in arms about it.  Hopefully with some new emphasis on improvements, this can now be fixed to just simply bring you back to your post seamlessly.

EDIT: After posting this comment, it did bring me back to my post!  There may be hope!

I can't seem to change my avatar (want to get rid of the dictator image, given tragic situation in Ukr).

It accepts the new png file upload, but it says an unexpected error has occurred when I try to save.

Points appear to be broken again; mine are not incrementing unless by some miracle I've been negged for the same number of points as I've accumulated over the last week.
