Moderator Action Sticky 2024

Submitted by Seth on February 7th, 2024 at 11:03 AM

Hello National Champions. New sticky for a new year.

Please don't post on here unless it's for Moderator Actions because they get cumbrously long. Long threads get deleted.

Want the rules of the board? READ THE FAQ: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

--------------------------------------

Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Tony Garcia: Same deal. Sparty the Freep hired to be a troll. If he's posting news you can probably find the same from Angelique and others.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas. This one's a soft ban. No beef, but we are on opposite ends of the fan vibe, so if it's being posted there it's unlikely to be welcome here and vice versa.

WHY WAS MY THREAD DELETED? Read this: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mgoboard-faq

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: If you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Hall of Stickies Past: For those who love to get lost in the meta. The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth. The seventh. The eighth. The ninth. The tenth. The eleventh. The twelfth. The thirteenth. The fourteenth. The fifteenth.

GENERAL TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULLY POSTING ON MGOBLOG

  1. Act like you're at an alumni association event. You know how to act at an alumni club event. It's a mostly relaxed atmosphere of people with the same interests, but also a public one. There are strangers around. What you say might come back at you. People are dressed, and not here to hear about what people look like when undressed. You get the idea.

  2. When arguing, argue the BEST parts of the other argument first. If you're getting frustrated in a conversation, back off for a sec, acknowledge what's a good point, and then try to pick that apart first.

  3. Be useful. If you're posting something, do we need it or do you need to share it? Those are different questions. It's always appreciated when you put in the extra time to provide examples, link where you got information from, etc. If you're sharing news, check it hasn't been posted recently, provide sourcing, and try to save your own comments for the comments section. If you're saying something people have already heard, maybe they don't need to hear it again (says the parent).

  4. Don't fight a mod or a writer. Not only are you probably wrong, but even if you're right I probably need them WAY more than you.

WHY DO WE MODERATE...

  1. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else? NOTE: Writers (not mods) can get away with politics because you have the option of punishing us for it by not supporting the site. We have this rule so readers don't set each other off, because we don't want you leaving for something some message boarder said. If you leave for something we said, that went into the calculation of saying it.

  2. Freedom of speech. The freedom to say a thing doesn't imbue what you say with any quality, just like the freedom to invent a machine doesn't mean every store has to carry it. MGoBlog is a business, not a public institution; people come here for a high-quality ideas market about Michigan athletics. If you put out a bad apple, it gets tossed. If you do it constantly, you lose your stand.

  3. Unpopular ideas. Moderators are given the primary instruction: DO NOT CENSOR IDEAS. But some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise.

  4. Content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.

  5. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti is on there too. If someone's trolling Michigan fans, don't spread it.

  6. Yoder. Given: a) The only person Yoder sources is Yoder, b) the only non-bot who follows Yoder is Yoder, and c) roughly 7.53 billion humans on Earth lucky enough to not be Yoder would be appalled if anyone thought they were Yoder, we can logically assume that anyone sharing a Yoder link must be Yoder, and we'll ban Yoder again. This also goes for that twitter account that makes up fake quotes and that one podcaster with ties to white supremacists who keeps trying to get his stuff posted here.

  7. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We have tens of thousands of female Michigan fans; don't make it suck for them.

COMMON WAYS TO GET BANNED

  • Thinking because someone wasn't moderated (yet) that the rules no longer apply.
  • Creating a problem for us, e.g. if you post false information that the greater internet subsequently picks up and says they "read on MGoBlog."
  • Creating a thread that is embarrassing for us.
  • Going off on current and former MGoBlog employees.
  • Posting a conspiracy theory, e.g. anti-vax shit. Same reason as politics in general.
  • If I can tell that you're Maizen.

Oh good. Having to hit the "Last" button and realize that you were on, what, the twenty-first page of comments was getting a bit interesting. The longer these threads get, the more morbid a read they become.

Locking this one up: House Judiciary Committee trolls Spencer Petras and Iowa Football.  Just as several commentors have expressed early in the thread, the thread appears to be headed closer and closer to political mayhem.

I'll be taking a more complete look (so far it's just been a fairly quick glance) and most likely I'll weed out the more inflammatory comments.

But LOL Iowa football (that's why I plan to keep this up on the board UNLESS the overwhelming sentiment is to delete the whole damn thing).

Although I've defended Kirk Ferentz and Iowa's program in the past, I honestly feel that the referenced post/thread is only superficially about Iowa football. It's a political snipe job that engenders at least as many political comments as ones about Iowa's sad offense. Personally I feel it should be deleted in support of the firm "No politics" rule. And I'm not saying that bc it's Iowa; I would say the same thing about almost any other program (except MSU and OSU).

It's clearly a politics post and fucking Jim Jordan being involved makes it even grosser but it's also a somewhat-funny joke at least.  And I say that as someone who decidedly doesn't agree with basically any legal analysis the GOP Judiciary committee comes out with.

I think it's funny but some of the most powerful people in the land making fun of college kids rubs me a bit wrong. I get that CFB, especially Big Ten, is basically minor leagues at this point but I still feel like Mike Gundy's rant holds true.

It's definitely hilarious...just wish it came from, like, "College Republicans of Wisconsin" or something.

People need to stop buying Michigan premium content from “insiders”

This dude is seriously mad that somebody had information and shared it because the information changed. Seems like an odd thing to be mad about.

Why have a weatherman if the weather is going to change?

Absolutely not.

That disgusting post crosses way over the line and just earned Michfan777 an immediate suspension.  It'll be a minimum of two weeks, possibly substantially more.

I think a crackdown is a bit overdue on fat-shaming and other lowbrow nonsense.  I've seen some pretty nasty things lately aimed towards (but not limited to) Warde and Juwan in particular, the type of garbage comments that shouldn't have a place on the MGoBoard.

We can---and should---be better than that.

I will add that there has always been a weird fat-shaming undercurrent to criticisms of Warde for years, which is sort of rich given the fact that my guess is a lot of guys (and face it, it's mostly guys) posting here aren't the most svelte people in the world.

Take issue with Warde because you don't agree with how he's done his job but it's insane to me in the year 2024 that "haha, that's guys fat so that makes his performance even worse" is considered reasonable discourse by anyone around here.

There's one about him being 'a big eater' in the room a couple posts down too. You hit the nail on the head- there is absolutely room to criticize Warde's handling of all sorts of situations over the last couple years, but resorting to taking cheap shots at the man's weight is cruel and embarrassing, and it takes away from actual legitimate discussions of his performance.

Edit: added the link for clarity. It's also a tame post, in the grand scheme of body shaming against Warde, but I too am past the point of being sick of it.

The "spin" on Clink leaving

It's weird how mad some people are at Sam Webb over Clinkscale leaving. This guy listed things said that were true and things said that were true, and tries to call it "spin." Not worthy of its own thread, reeks of vendetta, use of scare quotes in title sold it as someone not to take seriously.

Who is Anthony Arnou and why is the entirety of social media saying he’s our new QB

Since when is one single source , a $5 blue checked junior high school kid who aspires to be a sports journalist, the "entirely of social media"?

And you're boldly telling us you have no link and we're the ones who need to Google 'Anthony Arnou' ?

[edit @9:30pm]: just an idle thought, but did someone hack the MGoAccount of James Burrill Angell to post this nonsense?

*sigh* MINIMALLY....a link. MINIMALLY.

That way, we're not searching for the reason to downvote this.

A note to Mineral King:

I have repeatedly asked you to stop upvoting yourself but you continue to upvote nearly every one of your own posts.  To my knowledge, it's long been a tradition or "unwritten rule" on the MGoBoard that self-gratification upvotes are NOT OK  with one exception: Posbang threads.

Because of your refusal to cooperate, I'm considering taking this additional step: each time I see you upvote your own post, I'll follow up with a downvote or two and then delete your post.  Will this get your attention?

The way I look at it is that, seeing that many MGoUsers point it out here and elsewhere when they're down, yes, points do matter to many on the board.  BUT, I also would guess that 99% or more on the board don't regularly upvote themselves.  It seems weird to me that anyone would be that point-needy.

It's not something I usually notice unless  1) that particular account gives me other reasons for an inspection; and then 2) it's blatant. Mineral King fits both criteria.

Going off on a bit of a tangent here, I'll give an example of a blatant point hoarder I spotted several years ago: Umbig11.  There was a MGoBoard points glitch years ago, very briefly, that Umbig11 jumped on with both feet. One day I noticed his points total was suddenly jumping by leaps and bounds of a magnitude that I had never witnessed, hundreds, even thousands of points per hour. I figured out how he was doing it and pointed it out to one of the mods but by then he'd taken advantage of it by tens of thousands of points.

A few years later (after taking on the mod position), I decided to look into some disputes between him and a few other MGoUsers.  I then noticed more odd point-reaping going on with his account, including upvoting himself immediately after each post.  From seeing that and noticing other things about so-called "insider info" he posted, I eventually came to the conclusion (for what it's worth) that Umbig11 was a fraud rather than a legitimate insider.

Hello Rob,

If this bothers you so much I will try not to do it again. I 100% do not care if you downvote my post. I have been a part of mgoblog as a lurker for around 15 years and I always thought it was an unwritten rule that we don’t talk about points 🤷🏼‍♂️. Either way, I submit to your authority on this board and will do my best to not click the up arrow on my own posts so it helps you out. Deleting my post because you dont like that I upvoted myself would be a strange approach to censorship. Regardless, ill do my best to submit to your authority here, im sorry this had you this upset. Have a Good day.
