OT - Passing a kidney stone

Submitted by Zarniwoop on

I'm going to be passing a 5mm stone that's currently stuck in my ureter within the next few days. Looking for veterans that can tell me what to expect.

Is it worst in the ureter or the urethra?

Outside of the pain meds, is there anything I can do to make it more bearable?

Any other suggestions. I ended up in the ER last night because of the excruciating pain of having it taversing my ureter. Not looking forward to more of this.

Yes, I know this isn't a medical board. But, I'm utterly miserable with pain and this is my online "home" so to speak. There's something comforting about seeing the layout when you're in agony.

Of kidney stones. I know how it goes man.

The worst parts is when it passes through the various systems in your body (ureter-bladder). When I got my first one (I've had two or three), I don't remember ever being in as much pain in my life.

And then my second one, I drove to the hospital at 7 PM. They put me on meds, I drove home. Drove myself back at 2 AM and almost passed out at the wheel.

The part where you ACTUALLY pee it out? No pain. It's wonderful.

To help? Drink A TON of water with lemon. I mean A TON. I was going bathroom about 6-7 times an hour. Heating pad on that area when you lie down.

The audio from this scene is the best.  Anytime I hear or see the word "kidney stones" I automatically say it like this guy does.  I also use the same tone when I am in the grocery store looking for kidney beans.

Just be glad you're not a cat. You don't want to know how many cat penises my wife has removed in her career because of chronic urinary blockage. She even had a patient named Theon. Yes, Theon. And when she told the owners she would have to remove the penis they could not stop laughing. Come to think of it she couldn't stop laughing either when she told me.

now maybe it was a coincidence - but someone suggested that to me when I had my first kidney stone.  I've since had a couple stones.

But after drinking that concotion (which was rather vile, but we're not going for taste here!), the pain and the stone were typically gone within the next few hours.

Not me personally, but my wife had stones with both of our first two pregnancies and it was absolutely brutal. As bad as labor.

Just make sure you actually pass it. We thought she had passed one, but it stuck around and caused a couple of bad kidney infections first.

It's awesome when you hold your piss just so you can try and painfully force it out with a much pressure and volume as possible only to realize that the bastard didn't move at all.

I hear they're hell.

Never had kidney stones, thank god... but on Monday I had my gallbladder removed, along with a dozen or so gallstones around 1/2 inch each + one that measured nearly 4" x 2" x 2".

Good luck.

Doctor actually said I've likely been walking around with the big one growing for 20 years & asked how I was able to go that long without complaining.  Said "you must be tough."  The nurses all said "It must have been excruciating."

When asked what it was on a 1-10 scale, I said a 3 with  flare-ups to a 6.  Because I have experienced a 10.  When I was unable to get up with a fractured vertebrae the EMS tried to pick me up to put me in the stair chair... then dropped me when I screamed.  It felt like an ice pick had just been jabbed into my spine.

This was small potatoes.

My gall bladder looked like a sack of marbles when they yanked it out of me.  It's amazing I wasn't in more pain in the years leading up to getting that bastard removed.  After thinking it through, my gallstone problems started in high school.  I just had no clue what was going on then.  Weed must have been very theraputic.  Maybe you can find some of that.

I had a good friend who passed many a kidney stone over the years.  I decided he had it much worse than I did.  He agreed.

Weed got me through a lot over the last couple decades with these stones that I only found out about 6 months ago.  By the time of the surgery I couldn't go a day without it, or the nausea would be cripling.  Didn't realize a lot of what I was going through was caused by gallstones, from depression, to acne, exhema, exhaustion, & back pain (I previously broke a vertebra, so I thought it was just that getting worse.)  All turned out to be symptoms.  I didn't say anything to my doctor until I started getting bad abdominal cramps & feared I might have re-torn a hernia I previously had repaired.

but for years leading up to it i started getting horrible back cramps.  I did a lot of manual labor and also seemed to be getting constipated a lot more often, so never suspected it was anything serious.

Got worse & worse for years where only physical massage on by back (like having a girlfriend walk on it) and guzzling prune juice gave me any releif.

Finally a friend of a friend said .  . "hey sounds like my brother's gall bladder problems".

1 trip to the dr. found a massively impacted gall bladder.  It supossedly took them forever to remove it,

Felt a bit stupid for suffering for years in ignorance.

Dude. For the last three days I've been having waves of pain in my lower left back. It usually only lasts 30-60 seconds and occurs about every 30-40 minutes. I'm hoping it's just a muscle strain but I'm strating to get worried that it's a small kidney stone. I've never had one before so I'm still not sure if that's what is going on.
