I am 95% sure Mayfield was asked to apologize by the coaches.  I'm even more certain that his apology is 100% insincere and his coach probably cares only slightly more, but it is and always has been de rigeur to say I'm Sorry If People Were Offended, This Is Not Who I Am.  Genghis Khan's PR flack probably issued a similar statement to various Hungarian barony that he didn't outright slaughter.  And that's fine.  It's a perfunctory social ritual that's reinforces the veneer of civility that makes us, well... more or less civilized.

Bottom line is that when Fate and Destiny asked Baker Mayfield what would he do, he strode to the middle of the toilet seat and planted the flag through the pork rind-encrusted hearts of Ohio State's mouth-breathing, cooler-pooping, sibling-diddin' fanbase and also shot Cupid's arrow through all of our hearts.  And no apology will ever take that moment away.

Excelsior, Ser Mayfield.

I have to believe that the apology was one that he was asked to give really. It is hard to imagine someone who is genuinely troubled by what they are doing would have actually planted that flag on national TV for all to see, but I could definitely be way off there, not knowing Mayfield personally obviously.

As someone pointed out above though, OSU doesn't need to go back terribly far in their history to find reasons why other teams may want to do such things.

The Big Ten said no more flag planting in 2006.

MSU started the tradition at Notre Dame the year before.  But when Illinois beat them at Spartan Stadium in '06, the Sparty players were none too pleased...

If we're all for celebrating the vanquishment of our rivals, the flags should be planted through the bodies of our enemies, followed by grabbing the opposing school's women from the stands and ravishing them on the 50-yard line. Finish up by kidnapping the opposing fans' children for menial slavery back in the home territory.

I mean, it's kind of dumb to plant a flag on an opposing team's field, but if you are going to do it, own it.  Don't apologize.  You meant it when you planted the flag; you absolutely don't mean it when you apologize.

Right when I said I was now a Baker Mayfield fan he goes and does this.

Never apologize to Ohio State Baker especially with the performance you had.

Those assholes would never apologize to you or OU .

c'mon Mayfield that was awesome.  He quoted how ohio does the FUCK YOU song when they win at away games.  I didn't notice but did all the ohio team sing with their fans last Saturday (oops - all the fans were gone).

After our boys whoop on ohio on Nov. 25, I truly hope that Harbaugh himself grabs a flag, runs around Michigan Stadium and then plants that M flag at the 50 !!!

Go Blue!

under the circumstances, he sounded authentically apologetic even if deep down you know it just felt oood rubbing the victory in.

Even in that "No, he didn't moment," I think most Buckeye fans get it. They've been assholes for so long, payback is a real reality check. In any case, life goes on.

It's always funny or cool until it happens to you. If Barrett had done that in Norman last year, OSU fans would've reveled in it and told any complaining Oklahoma fans to "stop bitching," "they're just kids," "you're all sore losers," etc.

Mayfield just won what was, up until now, the biggest game of his life after being embarrassed by OSU last year. He was jacked up, and I don't blame him for doing what he did for one second. Sure, if he did it at Michigan Stadium, it would peeve me a little bit. But I'd get over it and hope for my chance at revenge in the playoffs. It's football. These are big games that could propel your team all the way to the title game.

To be honest, it's quite fitting. He did this in front of the same crowd that chants on every kickoff "O-H-I-O, rip his fucking head off." Some may call Mayfield's flag-planting classless, but I'd call a sizable portion of the OSU fanbase classless as well. That pompous, my-shit-don't-stink fanbase got what it deserved. A thorough ass-kicking at home to who they deemed an inferior opponent.

I understand getting caught up in a big win, but show a little class and act like you've won a big game before.  No need to disrespect a team. Celebrate with your teammates on the field but save a lot of the bravado for the locker room.

Sep. 11, Norman, OK:

On behalf of the entire Sooner football team, I want to whole-heartedly apologize for our unsporting planting of our flag in the center of Ohio Stadium.  At the time I did this act, I was focused on my 27 for 35 passing performance, netting 386 yards and 3 TDs through the air.  I was so happy with my offensive line's performance that I really did not consider how crappy Ohio State's DLine performed.  For us to have that success with no interceptions was really inconsiderate, and for that I am sorry.

I also was so very happy with our defense's performance, and focused on having held Ohio State to three field goals and a touchdown.  Against the No. 2 ranked team, this was a great performance.  Selfishly, though, I failed to realize that it must be very hurtful for a No. 2 ranked team to fail to produce points - especially with their ex-Heisman candidate QB J.T. Barrett behind that lackluster performance.

I am also sorry I just said "ex-Heisman" candidate.  I am sure that there are voters in the Heisman who will look at J.T. Barrett's performance Saturday and beyond, and view him as still in that race.  All of them will be in Ohio, but their votes matter, and I should not have ignored them.

Finally, I found (and still find) it very funny to play a No. 2 ranked team in a stadium that looks like a toilet bowl, and have that other team look like crap.  That's very immature of me, and for that I'm also very sorry.

No apology will make it better for us. You know where you can stick your apology. Just make sure it is not made of turf - Sincerely every buckeye fan with class

The comparison to Hoke is completely off base. Hoke sheepishly apologized in a badly-worded statement for an idiotic pre-game stunt by a team in the midst of a tailspin, against an opponent that had dominated them lately, in a game they would eventually lose badly. Everything about that incident was absolutely pathetic. Mayfield just became overexuberant while celebrating a big win with CFP implications that put Oklahoma in the top 3. Completely different situation.

He should have owned that by saying something funny like "I was honoring our troops by reenacting Iwo Jima". Instead, he went all Hoke. Went from badass to pussy in an instant.
