I wasn't on the Peters is the starter bandwagon, but didn't expect to hear McCaffrey's name before his. Any insight as to why? Still huddle/leadership command or has something else come up?

To be honest, if Speight has truly locked down the starting gig, I'll wait until the next QB battle before getting overly concerned about the pecking order. It would have been great if Peters had taken the back up job decisively and would be getting some live reps this year, but in terms of the long term arc this may be motivational, or may be a sophomore slump. It could also be something totally different, but I think it's too early to jump to any conclusions.

at least as it relates to Peters. It's been shown many times, and said as well by Harbaugh, that the greatest progress a player makes it from year one to year two. If Peters is in fact either not progressing or regressing, that is a big cause of concern with regard to his future as a starter.

But it's not really year 2 for him. By that logic this is year 4 for Speight. Would've loved to see Peters take a big leap forward but each of those guys had a year on him and solid starting experience.

I think that's probably fair.  At least, it probably counts as like a partial year. Because yes, this is year 4 for Speight, but year 3 under Harbaugh.  And he made a big leap from year 1 Harbaugh (he was bad) to year 2 Harbaugh (he was pretty good).

Speight did see some time in his Harbaugh year 1 which was his actual year 2 in college, so yeah, it's certainly not time to panic on Peters, especially since redshirt years in which you don't see the field probably don't count as that true year 1.

There's nothing to say he didn't take a step forward (or there wasn't until today's news about McCaffrey passing him). You can take a big step forward and still be behind other guys that have been doing this a lot longer.

Nope. The rule of thumb you're referring to is improvement from year 1 of being a starter to year 2 OF BEING A STARTER.  How would you even assess a players real improvement who didn't even see the field the previous year?    We should expect to see Speight improve as he is now beginning his second year as a starter and third year in the offense.   That a redshirt freshman didn't beat out a 4th year player with a full (and solid) year of starting under his belt should not be a surprise (even if Speight doesn't have 5 star atheticism and that makes you not like him).

this isn't true.  Adjusting to the speed of the college game, learning the playbook, getting the superior S&C training of a collage program all that stuff mostly happens in practice and the weight room and the development curve is steepest in the first year.  Practice is where you get game ready, then you get put in games to play.

This question of how would you even assess a players real improvement who didn't see the field the previous year is so insane it must come from people that never played HS or higher level sports.  You assess a players improvement in practice!  That's what a coach does and that is what Harbaugh is referring to. What do you think these guys do all week?

A RS year spent on the scout team running other teams stuff may not allow you to fully grasp the playbook so that year may not count fully in this rule of thumb, but you definitely don't start until all this stuff has been figured out in practice and you're ready to contribute at a high level (and if you have to get thrust into games for lack of options, your team is not gonna have a good time).

A redshirt freshman getting beat out by a returning starter and a senior backup isn't really cause for concern.

... but him potentially getting beat out by a true freshman that everyone agrees isn't physically ready to play in college, kind of is.

Crazy to think that 6 weeks ago most people assumed Peters was at least pushing Speight. It has to be safe to say that Peters hasn't regressed significantly in that time, and that the reports were just inaccurate to begin with, right?

I don't, I'm just trying to come up with a theory to fit the available information. Given how good he's looked, that he was ahead of O'Korn in the spring, all the coachspeak about "command," plus some of the vague rumors about him being unhappy and homesick, I think it's fair to hypothesize his sudden drop off is motivational.

We don't even know that there was a "sudden drop off."  You are asserting this without evidence.  Even if rumors exist that the coaches say that McCaffrey would start ahead of Peters were the choice bing made today were accurate, we don't know if they are saying that because it is what they really think, or because they want to give Peters some pressure to improve.  Hypothesizing that he is in some kind of an emotional downturn is unnecessary and unsupported by any evidence.

In a situation where we only have baseless speculation to go off of, I think this is probably closest to the actual state of things. The QB battle may have been close a number of weeks ago, but as Peters received criticism and saw himself slipping he probably checked out mentally, putting himself even further behind.

Maybe he's homesick, maybe he's been going through a breakup, maybe he hasn't played too great and is getting inside his own head? There are a million reasons a guy may not be playing at his peak performance, it's incredibly disingenuous to suggest that just because he isn't having the best camp right now that he checked out just because he wasn't going to win the job.

I'm not sure I buy "Peters is quiet" as a thing. "Command" is the word used, and that has a lot less to do with voice level and a lot more to do with understanding what people are doing. Speight knows the playbook; it sounds like Peters struggles with it. But who knows, a lot can change in three years.

As a former college QB, I can tell you that for some guys, it takes time to feel comfortable... ALOT of time. You gotta remember, he probably was with the scout team most of last year once the season started, or wasn't getting many reps in practice, so this is essentially his first full fall camp running with the 1s and 2s...it's an intimidating thing to be thrust into that role so quickly; some guys respond immediately, some guys take a while

as they made it seem Morris was to Rudock two years ago, only to see Speight come in as the true backup.

i.e. possibly not actually close at all. Seems like there's a lot of misdirection from the offensive coaches well before the players even step on the field.

I don't see this as necessarily a bad thing. I would think Wilton would come back next year so who cares if we have a Soph (RS) or a Junior (RS) starting in 2019 as long as one of them is good?
