Speight is as old as Jake Butt. He had a 5-year HS career and he redshirted. He's already old, and he certainly has the size to be a QB already. If he takes advantage of his receiving corps, show better accuracy on his deep ball with a high-accuracy level, it's totally plausible for him to be drafted.

At least it puts into perspective how far we've come since 2008.

I remember thinking that we should go for it on every 4th down and do an onside kick after every score, just to get Threet/Sheridan a few more chances to score (since our defense was going to give up the TD regardless of the opponent's starting field position).

I think you're blending together the seasons of awfulness.

Our defense wasn't terrible in 2008. The offense was a complete pit of suck, but the defense tended to keep us in games, for a little while at least. However, as the offense got better in 2009 with Forcier, and attained light speed in 2010 with Denard, the bottom fell out from the defense.

Peters was the next great QB for us.  Fast forward to today and this news and all Peters is now is a lazy, quiet shmuck.  We all do know it is a good thing that we have a rsJr leading our team as a 2nd year starter and this also gives Peters (who I think will be a stud) to develop into the leader that Harbaugh wants him to become.

The rest is probably going to be very fluid and changing.  It will be very interesting to see how things look a year from now.  Speight will lead us to a great year this year and that's what I'm excited to see.

I thought Peters would be doing a whole heck of a lot better, but the news about McCaffrey is not surprising.  He is football ROYALTY!!

Of course McCaff is going to be a baller and top draft pick!

I don't believe this for a minute.  They love McCafferey's leadership, Drevno was clear on that.  And they don't love Peters'ss's. He'll either respond or he won't (I think he will).  But that's it.

There's absolutely no pressure on McCafferey, everything he does well is bonus and anything he performs poorly at is waved away.  That's how you get a practice assessment like this.

But reactionaries gonna react with an over abundance.

Peters will be fine. He's barely a year removed from the farm in Indiana and already fighting a little homesickness, its no wonder he's not the leader that Harbaugh expects of his starting QB...........YET. On the other hand, McCaffrey is from a professional football factory.......his family.

The best news for Peters is Spieght is a great leader to learn from, even though he seemed quiet himself when he first arrived.

Wasn't there some talk about his perceived aloofness? I know some kids like this. Great athletes but lack the vocal leadership. If that's the case, I would think Harbaugh would have spotted that before he recruited him.

As long as whoever plays gives us the best chance to win games, I don't care if Malzone is the QB. But that is somewhat surprising about Peters.

He's got more than enough time to prove himself here, but I'm fairly confident that whoever eventually emerges between him and McCaffery, one of them is going to be damn good.

Some of the comments I've read talk about how Peters is already a failure....which is just laughable to me considering we hoped he wouldn't have to play this year and we're relying on some practice rumors for our entire conclusion.

But what I wanted to point out is that in the heyday of Michigan QBs when they were a regular fixture in the NFL that we almost never played young QBs.

  • Harbaugh (83-86, 14 NFL seasons) - didn't start until his third year
  • Grbac (89-92, 8 NFL seasons) - split time until second year
  • Collins (91-94, 16 NFL seasons) - didn't start until his third year
  • Griese (93-97, 11 NFL seasons) - didn't start until his third year
  • Brady (95-99, 17+ NFL seasons) - didn't start until his fourth year
  • Henson (98-00, 5* NFL seasons) - split time until his third year
  • Navarre (99-03, 1 NFL season) - forced to play second year, full time third year

So in the two decades where Michigan started throwing the ball they produced all of those quarterbacks who were in the NFL and set Michigan records.....just about all of them had to cool their heels.  It isn't a bad thing that Peters is still developing.

(There were also a lot of highly touted guys like Matt Gutierez, Clayton Richard, Scott Dreisbach, and Todd Riemersma who we all thought would be next in line.)

I really think McCarthy passing Peters is a motivational technique by harbaugh to get Peters to step out of his shadow and gain more "command" of the offense and vocal leadership skills. Peters, from a purely physical standpoint, is far more talented right now than Dylan. In fact, he may be the best on the qb team right now from that perspective. Whereas, Dylan is not close to being ready physical for the college game. Therefore, I think it's mostly motivational. Why else would "if not for a red shirt" stipulation? If the 3rd string qb was a true freshman he would most likely still be able to redshirt because unless disaster happens, he won't play. I think this let's us know that if both starter, and backup, go down Peters would go in and we all know harbaugh would burn a redshirt if the player is the best option.

Stated once or twice, your leap to *McCaffrey* in front of Peters being a motivational tool is far-fetched, based on assumption upon assumption upon assumption. I am guessing, as Occam would tell us, Peters is behind McCaffrey because he is, well, behind McCaffrey.

Thank goodness you specified Dylan.  If it was Jenny, I'd be really worried.  Not so much about the football end of if, but rather because the world needs her to be doing what she does best now that she's over that Playboy phase: fighting those pesky scientists and doctors on the evils of vaccinations.

(Even worse than Jenny would be Melissa, though ... I can't measure the tragic impact of her focusing on the silliness of American Football rather than the silliness of her Hollywood career.)

I agree Jenny would be much better than Melissa, but for different reasons. Jenny could be a good motivational factor for those who perform well in games. Though I am not sure how she looks these days, or just how giving she is in general.

Also, you mean "If it were Jenny" (not "was"), to infuse my comment with some grammatical pompousness. My day has been lacking in pompousness thus far, and now I feel better.

Not expected news but not shocking news. After a pretty successful first year as starter Speight had an obvious leg up over others. For someone to jump him in open competition would require exceptional leap in progress from challengers. Understandable that 5th year senior confident and committed enough to not grad x-fer solidly earns back up. Both Speight and O'Korn likely have better grasp of base offense and easier transition learning Pep's new concepts than the underclassmen.

Peter's is only RS Frosh who hasn't picked up or "controlled" the offense as quickly or easily as others. This could be from combination of issues (home sick, easy HS scheme, low key personality, etc). His physical talent is undeniable and he may not be as polished in the mental/leadership aspects of position b/c his physical attributes have made up the difference in the past.

Now McCaffery is ushered in with remarkable family/football pedigree a very polished Frosh much more prepared for the rigors of a college program.

Stands to reason a little self doubt may have crept in for Peters and shaken his confidence a bit. Especially, if combined with him having a little tougher time adapting to Pep's new wrinkles.

The kid is 19 and may need a bit of a wake up call to push into high gear. JH is a great evaluator and motivator. I have no more insight than any other poster but not overly worried about his current status on depth chart as a RS Frosh. I would bet Brandon still has a great chance to leave his mark on the program as another in the long line of great Michigan QB's.

Sorry for length

If you look at video of Peters off the field he still seems pretty childlike. He is kind of shy, introverted and a little awkward in Aspergery kind of way.  It seems odd when compared to more typical Michigan players who are often quite extroverted, articulate and at ease with themselves. I have no idea how that might translate to the field, but I could see a problem if these traits manifest into a QB who, while physically very capable, can't mentally connect with his offensive teammates in terms of being an assertive and commanding presence in the huddle and on the practice field.

"Speight has won the QB battle and is the starter."

That's what I was afraid of... I get that we're kind of limited in our choices at the moment. It'll take some time before Harbaugh's guys are ready. Here's to hoping Speight proves me wrong.
