Do you know if there's awareness of this potential issue on Harbaugh's part and if he's made any changes to help prevent it from happening? I get the whole "wanting it" thing which is absolutely necessary to be successful at that level, but if we lose a good kid just because lack of communication that seems like a problem.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:23 PM ^
In this scenario though the kid is sitting out when he’s not really hurt. I get people know there own bodies but if it’s clear there’s no desire to return and help the team win then that’s a waste of a scholarship. People will say that the school makes a bunch of money off the sport(true) so who cares if one player swipes a scholarship from them but the real person who loses is the kid that scholarship would go to if the unmotivated kid wasn’t in his way. My rant is now over thanks for reading.

See, the thOught of aLl that is nOt good. Michigan needs dudes that have a heart of a liON.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:19 PM ^
Does he prefer Frankenberry or Boo Berry or Count Chocola. We have to know.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:22 PM ^
1/2 boo berry, 1/2 count chocola and plenty of WHOLE milk
January 16th, 2019 at 4:23 PM ^
Anyone we interview who chooses Boo Berry would immediately be eliminated from consideration as a coaching candidate.
I would rather eat Campbell's gravy in a can than Boo Berry cereal...
January 16th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
Wait, George makes gravy?

Harbaugh's pretty damn good at the hiring coaches thing and FWIW on vetting this guy Sean Magee was the player personnel guy at Navy for most of Nua's time there before he took the same role at Michigan.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:27 PM ^
Can he play Quarterback?
January 16th, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
We all said we hoped Harbaugh hires young, up and coming coaches with something to prove. Well he sure as hell did that. I have no comment on Nua, but he fits the mold of what most of us wanted. I will give Harbaugh an A (on paper) for the hires he made.
No doubt that Washington and Mattison were/are good coaches, but fuck them. I firmly believe this is exactly what Michigan needs. These young guys will renenergize the players and hopefully they look like they are having fun playing again.
Only time will tell how everything works, but I am a hell of a lot more optimistic now than I was a couple of weeks/months ago.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Well said
January 16th, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
To say that this is going to be an interesting year may be the understatement of the year. But we say that every year, so, there is nothing particularly Nua about that.
I believe bringing in all these young coaches will be just fine...but Harbaugh and Brown have their work cut out for themselves...bringing along both the players and the coaches.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:35 PM ^
Good hire.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
You said there were 6 candidates for the job. Any insight as to where Nua was on that list in terms of 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.? And was Nua the only one to actually receive an offer?
January 16th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
Actually, there were more than 6. That was just part of the process. No need to go down that rabbit hole. We have our guy and he is a good one.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:37 PM ^
I thought he was going back to the NFL?
January 16th, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
Great news! Sam Webb was saying this would be a tough pull. Donny B and/or Harbaugh made it happen.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
UMICH1606 can eat crow.
UMBig11 commented yesterday that Nua had an offer and would make a decision by the end of the week. In response to this, UMICH1606 said:
Will people see you for the fraud that you are when this is proven false?
And now, lo and behold, UMBig11's info was proven correct.
Will UMICH1606 acknowledge this?
January 16th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
umich1606 is obviously a very troubled person (not kidding). he needs sympathy, not condemnation
umbig, on the other hand, is a dude.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:51 PM ^
No need to call him out my friend. They know who they are. Anyway, major props to my friend Brandon Justice. You guys should follow or subscribe to this youngster (@TheWolverineLounge). If I could share the email trail with you, you would be impressed. He had direct contact with those involved.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:29 PM ^
F that Umbig11 you should keep receipts on these clowns.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:38 PM ^
Thanks for the referral. I will check it out. With the exception of a very few guys like you (my thanks to you sir) posting on the Board MGoBlog has very little actual reporting these days.

Posters are in rare form today.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Damn, did that whole subthread just get blasted?
January 16th, 2019 at 4:41 PM ^
Only had to filter through the first 15-16 comments to get to any conversation about the actual subject matter.
Well done MGBLOG!
Good hire though.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
Well, I sure hope Coach Harbaugh is staying attuned to this site. If not, he is missing out on a lot of critical information.
January 16th, 2019 at 6:14 PM ^
Someone must have put some corn starch in the comments, which tends to thicken them up.
January 16th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
I like the hire! And he's had success in this state - he was on the Steelers team that won the Super Bowl in Detroit.

Anybody notice on the football Coaches page that Don Brown is listed as both DC and Linebackers coach? Seems like they need to now officially assign defensive roles for 2019 given they have Nua for DL. Right now positions via UM's football page are:
- Don Brown = DC / LBs
- Campanile = No position listed
- Partridge = STC / S
- Zordich = CBs
January 16th, 2019 at 5:14 PM ^
Don Brown has always coached LBs

Welcome Coach Nua!!

Member everyone ripping that guy for making a post about Nua becoming our Dline coach? lol. Its only about 10 threads down. Now its happened
January 16th, 2019 at 5:03 PM ^
I don't think it was "everyone". Absolutists irk me.
A few bad apples don't spoil the whole bunch, girl.

NUACE!!
January 16th, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
I don't pretend to know more than our staff and certainly have no idea how he is on recruiting, but here are ASU's DL stats:
Line yards - 83rd; Std. Down Line Yards - 75th; Pass. Down LY - 87th; Opp. Rate - 123rd(!); Power Success Rate - 104th; Stuff Rate - 68th; Sack Rate 90th; Std. Downs Sack Rate - 79th; Pass. Downs Sack Rate 90th.
Before you ask, no, it's not an improvement over 2017, in fact it's quite a regression in sack rate and does not compare favorably.
Don't like fancystats? How about this: only 29 sacks for the defense and only 13.5 for all combined DL. I'm not sure what his other history demonstrates, but this is not great.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:08 PM ^
Arizona State's defensive stats are a concern with me as well, but you have to factor in Don Brown and Michigan personal over Arizona State's.
I stated that Malloe from Washington would have been a home run hire, Nua is like unproven Malloe.
January 16th, 2019 at 5:27 PM ^
He just owned msu’s O line ! 1-0 vs them as the d line coach ...
January 16th, 2019 at 5:09 PM ^
Yeah, this is an interesting hire. This will be a 'wait and see' hire. Could be amazing upside!
January 16th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
According to this article, ASU went from a 4 man line to a 3 man line under Herm. So he was working with players not suited to the positions they were playing. He was only there one year so can’t read much into it.
January 16th, 2019 at 7:22 PM ^
Wait n see, but keep in mind he has our recuits which overall rated better than what he worked with. Hoping for the best here.
January 16th, 2019 at 11:38 PM ^
I did some digging on his other years. He had a great year at Navy and some okay years, according to fancystats.
This doesn’t look like a home run purely from a coaching production standpoint, but Navy and one year at ASU is not a fair sample.
