"Livers injury"? Any idea what that means?

12/30/2018 - 9:04am So we have self-centered…

So we have self-centered players who make/made self-centered decisions... but what do you recommend be done about that? How does the Michigan football program get better based on this diagnosis?

12/30/2018 - 8:51am Ok, so what? In his role as…

Ok, so what? In his role as OC, Harbaugh gets a D. Fair, in my opinion... Especially if Harbaugh's self assigned duties as OC included designing passing plays and WR routes.

People keep repeating this "Harbaugh is the OC" as if it's some kind of talisman, and I don't understand why. Whether he does or does not function as the OC, the offense wilted against meaningful competition, way underutilized the WRs, and couldn't keep the defense off the field when it mattered. And in either case, pep is a waste of money: either he has no role or impact ("Harbaugh is the OC"), or he sucks.

12/30/2018 - 12:13am Ok, I've read through your…

Ok, I've read through your comments, I hear you calling for reason to prevail, and I don't disagree... I just have one (ok, four related) question(s)... do you recommend any changes in the coaching staff, or the offensive or defensive philosophy, at all?... Is it just keep on doing what we've been doing?... Is it just tweak something--if so, what?  Sure, we hear you: don't freak out... but are you saying that no changes are necessary?

12/29/2018 - 11:59pm So the team "psyche" is so…

So the team "psyche" is so bad that "5 of their top 10 players" sit out, but it has nothing to do with bad coaching... is that your argument?

12/29/2018 - 11:01am Ok, so let's take this…

Ok, so let's take this breakdown and go with it... Michigan wins a lot of games, but struggles against top notch competition in games of national significance.  As exhibit A, simply take our OSU+Bowl records over the last decade or so, including Harbaugh's tenure.  The options are:  (1) change something at the coaching level, or (2) don't. As a fan/alumnus I'm surely entitled to an opinion on this regardless of my expertise. As a mgoblog reader, I'm also entitled to voice that opinion (Thanks Brian, Seth, et al.!) You don't like the "get rid of Pep" opinions, so let's hear yours!

Is it your opinion that a coaching change should be made at some level? Do you think a coaching change on the offensive side should be made? Do you think a change in the "overall strategy, tempo, game plan, etc" coaching domain should be made... or a change in the "details" of the running or passing game?

If you don't believe a coaching change is appropriate or necessary, do you believe that there is anything that can be done to enable the team to "break through" the glass ceiling of OSU and other nationally significant contests, or is our recent history of lots of wins, but perennial also-ran status the new status quo?

For me, Don Brown got eaten alive at Indiana and OSU, and I'm concerned a bit... but still confident that Brown knows what went wrong and has ideas on how to fix it, and will make those adjustments moving forward. On the offensive side, I don't think Michigan's point total against OSU is all that revealing... (1) Purdue scored a ton on them, and look what just happened to Purdue--so it's not like it's hard to score on OSU. (2) The real problem to my eye was that the offense couldn't stay on the field (that is, keep the defense off the field) when it really could have helped. And (3), though 39 is a lot, it was nearly enough to keep up, so it's not like the offense was covering itself in glory.

In the end, I believe the running game and overall offensive line play improved *dramatically* with Warriner appearing on the scene. This highlights, to me, the importance of Asst coaching *within* Harbaugh's offense. In comparison, I see little effective use of our highly touted WRs, I feel that the TE usage is weak compared with years past, and I see very little creativity in route design to confuse or take advantage of defenses.  This last point, to me, is striking, as watching the running game develop this year it is easy to identify *a host* of little play design elements that go a long way to defeating defenses even before the mano-a-mano battles begin.  It's exactly this creativity in details, as you put it, that is my argument for why Pep Hamilton is a weak link in the Michigan coaching attack.

Bottom line: I believe we can break through the OSU/Bowl/top competition glass ceiling, but it will require continued adjustment by Don Brown (I feel pretty confident he can and will), and it will require the kind of step forward the running game saw this year in the passing game... and I do not see evidence that Pep Hamilton is the Asst Coach best equipped to enable this improvement.

12/18/2018 - 1:54pm I don't disagree with this…

I don't disagree with this take... it's just a different perspective.  Bowl games are now pre-season exhibition games for *next year*, minus any potential freshman contributors.  That is, they're "Back Up (players) Bowls". This is, as OP points out, likely good for next year's team, but it does not follow that it is good for either (1) our prospects of winning, or (2) our level of enjoyment/enthusiasm watching.

In addition, in this new world, it significantly undercuts any end-of-season rankings, as they are influenced by the outcome of a game notionally played by next year's team.

Bottom line: if you enjoy M football just because it's M football, and can let go of "this year's team" on the basis of just the regular season (damn, that's a bad taste to be left with!), then you'll probably enjoy our "Bowl"... but if you were hoping for one last hurrah by the talented 2018 team... well, apparently that was the OSU game.

10/21/2018 - 9:22pm This.  We've been so…

This.  We've been so conditioned recently to expect no development or improvement from the line, especially during the season. I think the line as a whole, and the linemen individually, have been improving noticeably this season.  I see no explanation for that other than Warriner and related coaching changes.  Also interesting that Stueber came in... historically I'd take that as a very bad sign re: development of Hudson/Mayfield... but with how the line has been improving... maybe it's a good sign re: Stueber!?

09/17/2018 - 9:24am I think the material point…

I think the material point is that if a crappy team can convert 35% of 3rd downs plus some 4th downs, what will an actually good team do to us?  A secondary point, in my opinion, is that SMU probably should have thrown more slants/rubs even then they did, as it didn't look (to the eye, we'll wait to make a final call till UFR) like Michigan really had these stopped.

Gotta confess, I think the athletic department should hire a staff member whose job it is to clip and submit crap calls made agains Michigan in all sports, making sure to include comparison clips to other calls/non-calls in other games. ...The more I think about this, the less I mean it as a joke.........

09/17/2018 - 9:09am I totally remember this from…

I totally remember this from watching live... Watch the footage till the end of the play. The ref runs over to Bush after the play with an angry look on his face after Bush yells something in the refs direction. The refs were a fucking tire fire on Saturday. That happens. The thing that makes me most angry, though, is that there is nothing to do but bend over and take it. The NCAA certainly doesn't give a shit. We watch Michigan sports with my 11-yr-old son, and at least once a game I have to trot out the line "If you really want to be good, you have to be able to win despite this crap"...

Damn, I'd love for us to be able to run, with play-action to our great TEs as a constraint, and enough down the field stuff to the receivers to punish safeties and corners caught looking in the backfield....  Don't mind me... just dreaming of at least a "pretty good" OL, I guess... someday, right? Maybe today?  Maybe???...

08/09/2018 - 10:07am This, a million times over. …

This, a million times over.  I'm a professor at an R1 state flagship university, and the administrative bloat is mind blowing. Not to mention the fact that it's about 10x easier to fire a tenured professor than it is to fire even the lowest level staff member/administrator... Based on our budget alone, I would peg 90% of the cost increases in higher ed over the past decade plus as due to exploding growth in administration and internal ass-covering via regulation and regulators.  For an athletic department equivalent, IIRC there was a post on here a month or so ago about how the athletic department budget at UM has doubled or something in the past 10 years while the number of athletes/scholarship costs have barely changed.

Hey, Seth, thanks for the sticky. I'm on MacOS w/ Safari, and entering text in the search box at upper right results in text that is not vertically centered in the text box, but is below the text box, and therefore invisible. In the screen cap below, "asdf" is entered in the search box.  This behavior is present whether the header is short or expanded, and is independent of the width of the Safari window.

More generally, I have always preferred to read MGoBlog on the computer.  3.0 looks quite good on my phone, but the whitespace, fonts/font sizes, image sizes relative to fonts, header font sizes relative to body text, and un-bordered white background need tweaking on the computer.

Thanks for your work on the site--always great content!!

I'll also note that for those of us viewing on a computer, we are definitely not the target audience. It's clear that responsive (read: designed for phones) UI was the focus.  In my experience, the more UI/UX is tuned for phones, the worse it looks/works on computers....
