UM settled because the B1G sportsmanship policy is so poorly written that P retains essentially unlimited punishment power.  All he needs is the JGEC (Joint Group Executive Committee) to approve the proposed punishment, and the JGEC has rubber stamped P's proposal once already.

There was very real risk that JH could have been further punished and/or UM financially sanctioned with little or no recourse available to UM outside the courts.  This settlement took that risk away.

Next steps for UM are to get the sportsmanship policy written very tightly to limit the commissioner's power and then exact retribution against the cabal of conspirators.

I hate this had to come down this way, but I understand.  Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I think you're right. Not getting the TRO last week gave a strong indication that Michigan might not get an injunction after tomorrow's hearing either. Combine that with not knowing when the court will decide either way, the coaches would have to prepare two different scenarios for the Maryland and OSU games (with Harbaugh and without) which I'm sure has an impact on stuff like backfilling Moore as the OL coach.

I also suspect that Michigan made this decision a couple of days ago when they realized they might not win, and it's only coming out now because it would be obvious tomorrow when the hearing got cancelled.

How?  The Big didn’t do any independent investigation, any NCAA punishment is still coming.  I’m sure the BIG “closing” its nonexistent investigation doesn’t supersede any new information that may come out.  It was a game of chicken and we blinked, simple as that.

No I want that thing so fucking open ended so when the asshole commissioner looks at ANY OTHER team in the B10 they can face the same bullshit.  Or can be called out for doing NOTHING when he has every power in his hand along with his 4 henchmen. Forget about narrowing it.

Did I read correctly that PSU has TWO of the FOUR people on JGEC

Why is a JGEC only represented by 3 schools?

When a Sherrone Moore-coached Michigan crushes OSU (think 4+ scores), it will not only humiliate OSU but also anyone and everyone who argued that Michigan's success has had anything to do with the alleged advanced scouting.

OSU will absolutely play in fear of this, and Michigan will play with determination, focus, and fury—which will both contribute to this actually coming about.

Whatever else went into this decision, I have to believe that these considerations also played a part.

I know we have a loaded team but I think not having Harbaugh on the sideline really hurts Michigan against OSU. Whether we like it, or not, Day is a top coach in college football. Him being able to go in and coach against a guy with two games as a head coach is a huge advantage.

One of two things is going to happen. Michigan loses the game and we are clearly devastated over having our chances at a national championship blown by burgers and some idiot with a cell phone OR somehow Michigan still wins and Day is fired.

This makes no sense.

There were lots of good lawyers rendering opinions including writing an Amicus brief with a lot of our signatures on it.

I sure hope that Michigan didn't withhold information that would have changed minds to say nothing about writing the Amicus brief which was no small undertaking. The verification of hundreds of alumni alone who were signatories in support of the brief was a big job.

Based on the statements that Manuel and Ono made, I have to think something new must have come to the forefront.  If the University decided to rely on precedent and fall on its sword, they will have pissed off a lot of alumni who are questioning the reasons behind what has transpired.

Maybe there is more to this? UM announces this today and JH sits out MD game this weekend. Drama dies down. Then BIG 10 announces Sunday/Monday that due to cooperation from UM they have reduced the suspension to 2 games and he's back on the sideline for OSU. May be a negotiated face saving tactic they both agreed to? Who knows.

Only makes sense if BIG threatened to make Michigan inelligible for the Big Ten Championship game.  Obviously beating OSU without your head coach is more difficult, but if the title game was on the table it may be better to cut your loses and put all your efforts into preparing for that game knowing who is and is not available.

Obviously all speculation.
