Anxious/Nervous for Saturday?

Submitted by Ajcoss on November 19th, 2018 at 11:27 PM

I have been coming on here for the last couple of years. Usually at minimum once a day to check it out whether it’s May or this week. Clearly more content this week than May lol. With that said, as fans crazy the team we all care about the most and spend countless hours a year following comes down to 3-4 hours for what many of us would call the biggest win in the Harbaugh era. Crazy how much an outcome of a game can impact whether or not you have a good weekend or even fall for that matter lol.

My questions as we gear up for Saturday:

1. How often do you check this blog a day? During season I say 5-6 times a day.

2. How nervous are you on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being you can’t sleep and having nightmares of the past 15 matchups? I’ll say I am a 7, probably 8 by Friday lol.

3. Where will you watch the game? My house. I stand and watch as my Tv is mounted, so basically eye level. My wife probably Home, but she knows how big this game is and how nuts I go. At home, I miss 0 plays and hear entire game.

4. Do you consider Saturday the make or break game to decide if this was a successful season? No. I had high expectations all season with the talent on this team. Successful is Big 10 title. Anything in CFP would be gravy.

5. If I said OSU scores 31, would you take it knowing UM can deplete this D for 32+? Yes. I think OSU scores. Not sure they can stop anyone. Keep them under 35, I like it.

Yes I'm nervous, but it just comes down to just winning The Game!

1. I check a few times a day, surprisingly not during games though.

2. Ohio State is always a 10.

3. Current plans are to watch it at a friend's house.

4. After getting to know The Team this year, and after the way we’ve performed thus far, I'd say a loss would definitely feel like a disappointment. Winning the B1G is always the goal, any potential CFP games after that are not in our control.

5. I like that number at 28 better, but that’s easy to say a lower number lol. But I just keep reminding myself the way OSU has been gashed by Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, Minnesota, and even Oregon State. We definitely should be able to, we just need to. Let Shea take care of the ball and have the defense force a turnover and we'll be in good shape.

Win The Game!

Regards #1 - do yourself a favor and stay off the game threads.  It's really nothing more than a live snowflake thread, filled with instant hot takes.  Just last week, against IU, you would have thought it was the middle of last season!  Some poster actually said "#Harblah"...  People are awful on those threads.

OSU is going to try to stuff our run game. Shea is going to have a great game passing and this will open up the run game in the 2nd half. We may be tied or OSU may have a slight lead at halftime and I hope everyone does not freak out since Michigan will win in the 2nd half.

Would be a lot less nervous if this game were in AA.

Columbus is a tough place to play. And Harbaugh's teams have looked underwhelming on the road the last few years.

We should win on paper, but I'm not sure how this team will respond to the kind of pressure they are facing.

The Game is as much mental as it is physical.

1. 5-6x per week, used to be 10x per day but life happened—no disrespekt to those who live fulfilling lives but still check the blog every hour though :)

2. 5 now, which will no doubt quickly rise to a 10 after kickoff

3. In the Toilet Bowl itself

4. The rational side of me says a loss would be disappointing but this team way overperformed my expectations, so no. The emotional side of me says there can be no successful season without beating OSU and you might as well ask me if I’d consider thermonuclear war a successful outcome

5. Yes but all bets are off for The Game. My fan memory extends back to 2001 and only 4 times has Michigan scored over 31. They are 2-2 in those games and 0-13 for the rest. Also it’s Urban Meyer, one of the great offensive coaches of all time. Unless Don Brown has cooked up one of the greatest defensive plans ever, I think they will have to score more than 31 to win.

1. How often do you check this blog a day? During the season 5-6 times.

2. How nervous are you on a scale of 1 to 10?  I'm very confident in this team.  Maybe a 3.  Friday night probably will be more like 7.

3. Where will you watch the game? My house. For the same reasons.  I don't want to miss anything.  I want to be able to rewind a few seconds or pause.

4. Do you consider Saturday the make or break game to decide if this was a successful season?  I'd still consider it a successful season if we were to win our bowl game and finish 11-2.  But barely.  To feel good about the season we need to beat Ohio and win the B1G.  And preferably put up a good showing in the CFP. This team has the potential to win the CFP so ultimately I'll be a bit disappointed if we don't win out. 14-1 or bust.

5. If I said OSU scores 31, would you take it knowing UM can deplete this D for 32+?  Ohio is not putting up 31 against this D.  but for argument's sake, say somehow they do.  M is going to score 35 I think so we still win.

1. How often do you check this blog a day? Same as OP -  5-6 times a day.

2. How nervous are you on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being you can’t sleep and having nightmares of the past 15 matchups? 9 and having nightmares which include wrecking classic automobiles, being robbed and my current fiance cheated on me in my own bed.  I guess that's a 10.  So 10.

3. Where will you watch the game? Hopefully the lobby of our apartment building.  There is a huge TV, my parents are in town, and I am hosting a "tailgate".  No one invited even likes sports except maybe my dad and I.

4. Do you consider Saturday the make or break game to decide if this was a successful season? No. Big Ten Championship is always the measure of a good season.  It is Armageddon for the program tho.

5. If I said OSU scores 31, would you take it knowing UM can deplete this D for 32+? No.  They can score no more than 20.  This offense *needs* big plays and given how they come out flat in away games it might be that we are chasing them.  If the Game starts like ND I am not going to be thrilled.

You asked about my anxiety and there it is.

I check this and other news feeds throughout day.  More so this week.

Definitely more anxious this week. On paper Michigan is better team, but the best team does not always win.  Strange things have happen in this game.

I like to watch by myself or like minded friends/fans.  I don't want to talk about anything but the game while the game is on. NOTHING else. Unfortunately, Michigan is the only game I can't casually watch.  My wife understands this about me. God bless her as she is very understanding of this.

Make or break? As previously stated, Michigan is the better team. If not this year then when? I am proud of this team this year for getting off the mat after Notre Dame. I do think this year it is Big 10 championship or bust.  This is Harbaugh's best team and best team since 97. Michigan has it's best QB in years, great defense, skill players, excellent special teams.  It's all there. The Game is there for the taking. Take it! Take it on their field, in front of their fans. Send their fans home with that gut wrenching feeling Michigan fans have felt all too long and all too often.

This game has so many possibilities in my mind.  A high scoring slug fest, a low scoring slug fest. Michigan win's comfortably.  The only possiblity I don't see is OSU blowing out Michigan. Last I checked, it still only requires 1 more point than competition to consider it a win. So just one more point.....In the legendary words of Al Davis....."just win baby"

Punch'em Ohio the mouth early and often.

Take out years of frustration on this Ohio team.

When Shae was a little one, his bedtime stories consisted of him beating Ohio. Our QB gets it.

I'm not nervous, I'm going to enjoy the lead up and the unleashing :)

1. 2-3 times a day, not counting game threads

2. I’m at an 8 right now. I so want to be excited and confident but just can’t seem to get there after the last few years.

3. I’d like to watch at my house but I’ll likely be at in-laws.

4. Yes. I, quite frankly, just want to win the B1G and a loss to OSU means not achieving that.

5. Yes. I would but I don’t think it will be that high scoring game. OSU’s defense will have their best showing of the season, just watch, and we run the ball to eat up clock. It will be in the 20’s and margin will be 4 imo.

Well, I will at least tackle the second question.

As it is Tuesday morning, I am probably a 2 right now.

On Thanksgiving, it will be likely around a 5 or so.

Friday night late, I might be freaking out inside, but this is the first time in a long time I've been excited for this game at the same time.

Not nervous. It's a game of wierd bounces; I'll recognize that. If they lose I may try, again, to break away from my addiction a little further, spend more time with family, take it all a little more lightly. I'm not always happy with having to close the door and watch on my desktop, away from everyone because I'm so uptight.

Not sure why, but I seem to hold my breath more--literally--watching football than basketball. The hits, the endless stoppages; as fascinated as I am, as much as it's part of my family genealogy (three generations at Michigan, all five members of my family going there), the football thing doesn't always feel so healthy.

1. About 20-30 times/day during the season.

2. Not nervous, but excited, and I'm already at an 11.

3. At my house.

4. Yes this makes or breaks our season. Win and we're looking at a shot at the cfp. Lose and we're looking at a possible rose bowl vs WSU. But we need to win the big ten this year. This team deserves it.

5. Win the game. I don't care about the score. If we can beat osu, the refs, and the home field advantage, then the score doesn't matter. My gut is saying we win 30-24, but my brain says I can't think this way until we beat msu and osu in the same season.

1. Probably 10-15 times a day as I'm working from home this week and only two days.

2. 10 all day baby. Still hard for me to picture UM winning in cbus

3. When it's in columbus i watch it at home and we have sort of a neighborhood party, a big bonfire and such. We have a tv mounted outside so we all hang outside. Me, wife and daughter all M fans. The rest are osu (we live in columbus). They are all cool though. When it's in AA I always go. If it's not raining I'll be outside by 630am with my father in law, beer in hand, big fire, and tv on baby!

4. I honestly don't know.

5. I'm not sure. I do think UM needs to hold them to 24-28 and I think UM can.

Sounds cool. I’ll have my son home from college who’s been attending games since he’s been in a kangaroo sling hanging off my shoulders as well as with my 12 yr old who would bleed blue from a paper cut. I’ll have the pellet smoker going the night before with a full packer brisket for a few friends that I’ll allow in who haven’t cursed my team. My best friend who I’ve been going to games with since I was young isn’t allowed to watch the game with me (mutual decision). The last time we were together was the Sharty blocked punt, so we thought it’d be best to end the lifelong game viewing friendship for the sake of juju.

haha too funny man but sounds like a good time! I don't like this dang weather forecast though! Not so much for the game but for my hanging out outside by the fire. My daughter is 6 years old and she loves UM it's awesome. My wife is from NYC so she didn't even understand why people would enjoy watchign 18-22 year olds play football when she moved here. She quickly grew to hate osu and love UM.

My mom is an osu grad but she's a good sport especially considering her team has kicked UM's ass the last 20 years.

My wife was originally from Pa so she thought she liked penn state...I mean she had a sweatshirt. She then somewhat became a buckeye fan until she attended the game with me in 06. She was so appalled by their behavior, before, during and after that she started rooting for Michigan and hasn’t looked back. My family was originally from the flat rock area so I had no choice what kind of blanket I was brought home from the hospital in. I live in ohio so I have to deal with these assholes 365. It’s time for payback. My boys are fanatical, just like dad. My 12 yr old left the house this morning wearing Michigan gear from head to toe with a Rambo attitude fully knowing what awaits him at school.

That is so cool man! Similar scenario with me my wife didn't really like any college time but NYC is so pro focused she honestly did not believe me that 100,000+ people go watch college kids. We live right in columbus so I'm right there with you.

Time to win one of these and shut em up!

November 20th, 2018 at 7:52 AM ^

I'll be watching at home - always the case because I live in VA and have no family in the area, and no Michigan fan friends close by.  Wife and kid will not bother me - especially during this game.  Not because I'm a jerk about it, but because its the only time I ask to be alone, and they don't care about football (the kid hurts me, but he's only 7, so there's time).

This blog is really the only website I read every bit of.  I'll check some others (5-6 have made the rotation), and occasionally read some news content.  But this site...  On a slow day, with no front page stories and few, if any, user posts, I can get angry at it.  GIVE ME FREE CONTENT!!!!

This game does not break the season.  We know we're good, and we know we're going to continue being good.  Beating really good teams, like OSU, will happen as often as it doesn't.  Our time will come - it may be here now, it may not.  But the one thing I know: this team is at the top and isn't going anywhere as long as Harbaugh keeps burning that fire.

4th and Go For It

November 20th, 2018 at 7:56 AM ^

Nah - bring it. If it's close in the 4th I'll be nervous but this year it's ours to lose. I expect a small lead at halftime to grow to a comfortable win for us by early in the 4th.  This OSU team is different. They have it coming. Seize the moment. Break them.

Midukman

Nervous? I haven’t been until Indiana. Not as if we couldn’t have wrung them up if we scored touchdowns instead of field goals, but it is what it’s is. I’m nervous because on paper OSU should be neck and neck with Bama and IMO, are still capable. Hopefully they don’t find their inner Saban against us. Slow the game down, keep their O off the field,  make them quit and we win. Get into a shootout and I’m getting out a bottle of Jack and the iv bag.

  1. Depends on the season - this week at least 5 times a day.
  2. Really calm now, but excited for this opportunity to beat OSU for all the marbles. Will be amped by game time.
  3. At home, no distractions except when the dog and I go crazy after each UM score.
  4. Make or break. This is a chance to stuff Ohio in the Shoe and play for a title.
  5. OSU can't stop the run. We are going to pound them.  Higdon is going to deliver, plus Shea is going to torch them on play action - both with his arm and his feet.  But the real deal is coming from Coach Brown. Revenge is in that dude's eyes. He has the defense on a mission.

            UM 38  OSU 24    Go Blue !!!

1. 5 - 8.  This week closer to 8 because it the week and The Game and, even though I know there won't be any more info on if Chase is playing ....

2.   5.  Have confidence in this team, but OSU is a tough place to play, they have talent, and this game is the biggest game for both teams all season.

3.    By Friday I'm guessing I will be a 6.  Will be enjoying having my daughters home.  They are big Michigan fans also, and have grown up in a very dry era vs.  OSU, with my oldest actually crying after the 2006 game.  They will be here for the game Saturday watching with me at our house.  At that point it will be 10, or actually is Depth Comm 1.   Yes, I will feel responsible for their sadness if Michigan were to lose this one.  Thankfully they are resilient and not too entitled.

4.  No, agree it will seem like that but there would still be a good bowl game to play and win.  The program is in a much better place than 4 or 5 years ago.

5.   Personally think we saved quite a bit of the playbook for this game.  Of course the less OSU scores, the better our chances, but our team is gritty and resilient.  I can see us scoring in the high  30's if that's what it takes to win.

How anxious/nervous am I? For what amounts to the first of two possible play-in games for the College Football Playoffs this season, on the road in Columbus against a team that the Michigan Wolverines football team (a) hasn't beaten there since 2000 and (b) has beaten only twice in the past 17 seasons, and not since 2011, and possibly having to play against the strongest offense that Michigan has seen this season, without the emotional leader of the Wolverines defense who's the leader of "The Revenge Tour".  Like Ed Grimley on amphetamines, here's how anxious/nervous I am:

Q1: Probably 5-7 times a day

Q2: As others have said, I'm more anxious. I know who the better team is, but sometimes that isn't enough. I'm more confident than not, but BPONE and all...

Q3: Watching at home. My brother, mom, and fiancee will be there. I watch every game with my brother, and mom joins occasionally. Still trying to put together a menu for the game.

Q4: Man, I don't know. I thought maybe three losses heading into the year, but at this point I'd be pretty bummed if we didn't earn the trip to Indy. I wouldn't call it a failed season with a loss, but one that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Q5: I've seen teams run roughshod over the osu defense, but 31 makes me a little uncomfortable. 27 and I feel good.

It's actually nice that Thanksgiving is this week.  That way there are distractions that keep me from obsessing about The Game!

1) At least once an hour while at work. Only once or twice in the evening. I have even started checking 11 Warriors for other inside info.

2) I am nervously excited about The Game. There is nothing certain in college football and especially when playing aOSU.

3) I will be watching at home. Depending on the score, I will be sitting, standing, pacing, watching from around the corner, or if all the worse happens and wheels fall off the wagon, off doing chores.

4) Beating aOSU is always the benchmark for a make/break season.

5) I would love to see us up by multiple scores throughout the entire 2nd half.  I am getting older and my heart just can't take the stress anymore of home games.

My wife doesn't watch football and can't understand:

  • Why I will continue to watch a game where we are up by by 20-30 points.
  • How the results of any Michigan Football game can impact my mood for the remainder of the weekend.

Here's hoping for a VERY good weekend at my house!!

If I am by myself I usually mitigate my anxiety by only checking in on the game every once in a while-more often if things are going well. That being said-admitting that I have irrational anxiety in these regards, I am able to maintain my more healthy view and understanding of the athletic endeavor-that simply winning or losing does not define the quality of purpose in playing the games. A Michigan win would, however, restore some semblance of balance to our crazy world.

I enjoy the Steve Deace podcasts-greatly. Earlier this year, I believe after the Northwestern game, he had one he labelled "25". His point was that if Michigan holds any team to 25 or less points they will win...so far he continues to be correct...and I believe this may well need to happen this Saturday as well.

I have become a fan of Shea...love, love his demeanor-not to mention his physical skills, character and intellect. I believe he is a difference-maker...and will find a way to win this game for Michigan. I strongly maintain that there will be life after The Game-win or lose.

I'll be at the game in Columbus being both nervous about the game and the OSU fans who as we all know can be really bad at times. 4 years ago they were awful to me and my family but two years ago they were fine. I stopped into Ralphies sports bar on the way to A2 last year for a pickup order and almost had to defend myself. 1. depends, but 2+.  More on Wed/Thur, less on Sat/Sun

2. 0.  I'm the cook on Thursday, one game at a time.  I'll focus on Saturday after dinner.  Honestly, I don't get "nervous" just excited.  This isn't a "if they play their best game" kind of chance, this is an opportunity to lay some past demons to rest.  I expect to win, and that feels good.  Not M vs Rutgers expect to win... but higher than my expectation of going 3-0 through Wisc/MSU/PedophileState, and way way higher than my expectation of dominating those 3.  I feel good.

3. Dad's, it's The Game, it's the holiday, I can drink his beer and then he buys dinner afterwards.

4. B1G Championship is successful.  We don't play in Indy without this game (when I had to decide between hoping Maryland would complete the 2-point, it was a simple answer, if Maryland scored, we go to Indy regardless of this weekend).  So, no - but a victory does actually answer a lot more program questions than even Indy will.

5. This offense is not built for shootouts.  It depends a lot on how those points come, spot them an early lead like ND or NWU, and we'll have a rough climb.  Let it happen through the game and we can overcome.  Let's keep them under 20, that's a score I feel a LOT more comfortable with our offense handling.

Mongo

November 20th, 2018 at 11:07 AM ^

While our offense is not built for shootouts, OSU's defense is not very good in the B1G:

  • Gives up an average 25.8 points per game (6th)
  • Gives up an average 26.6 points per game to 10 FBS non-winning teams (10th)

That is like 10 points per game higher than other OSU seasons since Meyer took over ... and in a relative down year for the B1G.

And it is about 2 TDs higher than Don Brown's defense this year (12.8 ppg / 1st).

Folks say, oh but that OSU offense is really good.  Yes it is good, but no better than UM's according to league scoring ... both units average 37 points per game in B1G play.

If we execute on the expanded game plan designed just for OSU, watch out because it could get ugly and Urban's head might explode.

I've been anxious for every game since 2005 because I literally thought we would lose every year. It was apparent that Tressel owned us at that point and after that Rich Rod was no match. Hoke eeked out that win in 2011 but we were an overthrown ball away from losing the lead late. We just missing some pieces the last few years. This year, I'm not as anxious. The team has proven they can win on the road at this point, and for once we have looked better since the beginning of the season. Now lets finish the job!

it would be a bit disappointing to lose

i think UM needs 30 to win.  i think we can hold them to 28 or less, but i don't expect a complete shutdown.  possess the ball, limit their offensive plays, and score touchdowns.
