Exactly this. Shea had excellent efficiency last year and solid production despite operating under a restrictive scheme.
|01/15/2019 - 1:07pm||probably talking about Dave…||
probably talking about Dave Warner. Everyone seems to hate him. MD demoted him from co-OC and made him QB coach for '19.
|01/08/2019 - 2:34pm||I didn't know who he was 2…||
I didn't know who he was 2 years ago either. Don't live in the area anymore so wasn't actively tracking the Freep.
However, I saw some of his articles linked and liked what I read. He's pretty good, actually. And he's aware you can't just be a print journalist anymore. He's branched out to a podcast (also pretty good), and I've even seen him on youtube here and there.
So if you're looking for some fresh content, I would encourage you to check him out.
|12/22/2018 - 12:06am||The problem with those WR…||
The problem with those WR bubble screens out on the perimeter is that it takes way too long for the ball to get out there, with the receiver typically not even moving. It gives the defense too much time to react. It works once only. Get the receiver running and hit them in stride and it will be a lot more effective.

You must have graduated in the same era as me... I was in Freshman English section with Matt Elliot. He was a good guy.

Just looked it up and Charlotte finished 5-7 as well. 4-4 in C-USA play, however!

FWIW Steve Lorenz at 247 gave this class really good grades. B's at DE and LB otherwise all A's.

It sucked that JBB wasn't available for Ohio. After the whole year of him looking good and making plays. He must have been seriously hurt to not see the field in that game.

Yes, I was hoping for one for exactly that reason.

Eh, it was fine. I wish people would lighten up on here. It’s sports. Not the United Nations.

I have been bit by that one as well. Would definitely like to see this changed.
|12/04/2018 - 11:50pm||Yeah in retrospect it's…||
Yeah in retrospect it's looking like 2016 was the year, followed by 2017 if we just could have kept a QB healthy. It's very disappointing but JH is the right coach for Michigan and he'll figure it out. And, if he can't quite get over the hump then I can live with that, because he'll do it with integrity.

This seems oddly prescient after today's announcement (that Urban is "retiring"). I guess the Ohio BoT gets the last laugh after all!
|11/27/2018 - 2:12am||Wondering what people think…||
Wondering what people think about this theory:
M offense wants to set up occasional deep shots as a counter punch to base plays such as runs up the middle.
However, on Sat it seemed like most of the time when Shea went deep, Ohio just blatantly PI'ed, thereby disrupting the play. They were deliberately choosing to give us the 15 yards and first down instead of the TD/deep completion, knowing that it meant we would need to sustain a drive all the way down the field to get the TD.
Which is smart from their perspective; it's exploiting a rule in service of a strategy. In the NFL they appear to have addressed this exact problem by changing the rule to give a 1st down at the spot of the interference.
So, should we have that rule change in CFB as well?
In the meantime, without it, what's the best response to this strategy? The best I can come up with so far would be to go to max protect and keep throwing deep.
|11/26/2018 - 4:58pm||I like the way you are…||
I like the way you are approaching this. While none of us are anything remotely resembling experts, it does seem like a huge disconnect. How was this defensive plan ever going to work? It would be nice to understand the thinking behind it. Apparently they were two steps ahead on the adjustments so there was no way M was going to recover defensively.
|11/26/2018 - 12:37pm||Yep, I think that goes a…||
Yep, I think that goes a long way to explaining what happened. Now I'm wondering if we can pull off the same thing. The team should have the necessary motivation and maybe we have the talent?
|11/25/2018 - 11:24pm||Yes, JH has moved around…||
Yes, JH has moved around quite a bit. I think this spot is different however. Realistically I don't believe there's another job in CFB that would even be tempting to a guy who's returned to his alma mater. Which clearly needed him. And the NFL is a totally different beast - much less control over the roster, etc.
|11/23/2018 - 2:20am||That makes no sense. JH is…||
That makes no sense. JH is maniacally competitive and Ohio is our biggest rival. At MINIMUM JH is here until he’s kicked their ass multiple times and has a winning record against them. JH will go out with Michigan on top and positioned for success for years to come. Many years from now. And probably with at least one national championship.

I for one am happy to see this kind of post. Thanks, BuckeyeChuck, and I will think of you sympathetically (just for a second) as M unleashes hell & devastation on your team this Saturday.

Black has been low profile the last couple of weeks and I think that could really pay off on Sat. I bet he catches at least one deep for a TD.

sorry about the title - should have made it more specific. This is my first post, though, so please go easy on me! Woo Hoo finally made it over 100 pts.

TAMU despite being all the way down at #22, is favored over #7 LSU. It certainly looks weird.
|11/21/2018 - 4:21am||Yep! For his own sake I…||
Yep! For his own sake I want him to be able to get out there against Ohio and do some damage. Even if he's used sparingly. Then he'll have some time to recover before the CFP, if we make it.
B1G Championship game is Dec 1 and probably the team can get by without him if necessary.
Semifinal games / Bowls are not until Dec 29th.

Isaiah Hole has been working his behind off with these interviews. I have appreciated seeing all of his videos up on youtube and wolverineswire.

Amazing how the results so far this year have really changed the narrative. 3 out of 4 seasons with 10 wins sounds pretty dang good. Win the B10 this year and the legacy is cemented.

If M makes it to, and has a good showing in the CFP I think Don Brown wins the award this year.

Wow, this is some nice work! Must have taken some time to put together. A shame your graphs are not showing up at least for me (Windows/Chrome).
To my untrained eye there is something here. And hopefully our staff has also noticed and will take advantage as you suggested.
|11/21/2018 - 3:34am||Does anyone have a theory on…||
Does anyone have a theory on why MSU results have seemed to slump since 2016?
Pretty sure their D has been fine, but their ability to score points has dropped drastically.
Staff hasn't changed much. Same for recruiting. B1G doesn't have a clear trend towards being more competitive.
Maybe it's as simple as Connor Cook >> Brian Lewerke and Le'veon Bell > > LJ Scott??

I agree looking since 2015 makes sense so we can compare vs. JH.
However, after looking at his history, I would break up Dantonio's results into 3 eras.
They were mediocre for his first three years (07-09). Then he had 5/6 good years between 2010 and 2015. But he's regressed considerably since then as you've noted - just 19-12 in the past three years.

That's not so outlandish. Rutgers is awfully fiesty and seems to be playing better as the season has gone on.

yeah the moments they show Karan with his daughter in that video are heartwarming. You can see his goodness. But man is he a beast on the field.

|11/20/2018 - 1:50pm||If M has them beat, does JH…||
If M has them beat, does JH pull some starters down the stretch for rest / injury avoidance? And to get some seniors in the game? I wouldn't mind that as long as the final margin is 11+
|11/20/2018 - 1:46pm||I have a strong feeling that…||
I have a strong feeling that the staff has a whole bunch of stuff saved up just for this purpose. I remember being completely (and pleasantly) surprised by a couple of plays, such as Shea pulling and scoring with his legs against Wisconsin, and the RPO TD throw to Gentry against PSU(?). There's more where that came from if we need it in the red zone. Who knows we may just be able to smash our way in given their run defense.
|11/20/2018 - 1:41pm||People were pointing out…||
People were pointing out that several of Moody's kicks against Indiana wouldn't have been good from another 10-20 yards out. That's the argument for not having him kick anything longer than 40.
However, maybe for longer kicks he can adjust and put the ball where it needs to be. I guess we'd have to see how he's doing in practice to know the right answer here.
One thing for certain, though, Nordin is really struggling. It feels like very ball that comes off his foot lately has been a knuckle ball. I hope he can get that sorted out because personally I would not send him out there like this, unless I knew there was no chance Moody could hit it.

|11/20/2018 - 5:12am||Unless he's in unbearable…||
Unless he's in unbearable pain I'm highly confident we will see Winovich on the field this Saturday. And I think the Michigan defense will unleash absolute hellfire on Ohio. They may have some early success but once those famous Don Brown adjustments are made, the D will be going all out for complete domination. I think it's going to look a lot more like Wisky/MSU/PSU than what the last 2 weeks have been.
|11/20/2018 - 4:58am||I thought it was pretty good…||
I thought it was pretty good actually. Gave me some good history. Also suggested Don Brown is happy as a DC at this stage of his life and probably we don't need to worry about him leaving anytime soon. That's great news!
|11/20/2018 - 4:41am||3 games would definitely get…||
3 games would definitely get people's attention. They could carry over to the next season if necessary. Only for egregious plays like that one.
|11/20/2018 - 4:13am||lose-lose? I don't see it…||
lose-lose? I don't see it that way. Beat Ohio and M is probably headed to the CFP. Win out (or even just play Alabama close) and everyone will need to shut their mouths about how good this team is.
|11/20/2018 - 4:01am||1. How often do you check…||
1. How often do you check this blog a day? During the season 5-6 times.
2. How nervous are you on a scale of 1 to 10? I'm very confident in this team. Maybe a 3. Friday night probably will be more like 7.
3. Where will you watch the game? My house. For the same reasons. I don't want to miss anything. I want to be able to rewind a few seconds or pause.
4. Do you consider Saturday the make or break game to decide if this was a successful season? I'd still consider it a successful season if we were to win our bowl game and finish 11-2. But barely. To feel good about the season we need to beat Ohio and win the B1G. And preferably put up a good showing in the CFP. This team has the potential to win the CFP so ultimately I'll be a bit disappointed if we don't win out. 14-1 or bust.
5. If I said OSU scores 31, would you take it knowing UM can deplete this D for 32+? Ohio is not putting up 31 against this D. but for argument's sake, say somehow they do. M is going to score 35 I think so we still win.
|11/19/2018 - 9:07pm||He's become a strength for…||
He's become a strength for the offense and I really want to see him out there against Ohio. Preferably pancaking some DT/DE while Mason runs over a linebacker on the way into the end zone.
|11/19/2018 - 8:57pm||Last chance for JH to hang a…||
Last chance for JH to hang a nice fat "L" on him if this is true. At least at Ohio anyway.
|11/19/2018 - 8:51pm||We may give up chunks of…||
We may give up chunks of yards in the middle of the field against Ohio's short passing game, but I expect that will break down in the red zone and they'll be kicking field goals. Our D is going to be lights out.
