Perhaps a dumb question but is there a limit on the number of analysts teams can have? I seem to remember as recently as last year that the ncaa was weighing restrictions but wasn't sure if that was implemented
|01/17/2019 - 2:48pm||I think there's real case…||
I think there's real case for optimism here if in fact what Harbaugh and Gattis have said is true so far. Gattis has a ton to prove in his first solo job running the show and seems hungry and ready to go get it. He knows a lot of the players already from PSU recruiting days and knows the talent he has to work with.
If Harbaugh really gives him the keys, I think we'll see some very interesting and modern concepts on offense. Definitely not a complete departure, but what was needed this year was faster tempo, playcall diversity, and better utilization of talent, IMO. That's very achievable and seems exactly in line with what Gattis has said publicly.
We don't need to go #AirRaid to win - we need to utilize the talent we have, get the ball to them faster and in space, and keep defenses guessing. You can do that with many of the concepts we already have in place.

Is not OSU, so...good? All their eggs in the Justin Fields basket. They'd better hope he's can stay healthy all year.

there's been a lot of scuttlebut even before the game that Dobbs had been overrated with his initial rankings based mainly on his physical abilities and potential. May be a response to his senior season that was capped off with that lackluster performance. As other posters have mentioned, he's a man amongst boys physically but hasn't dominated the way one might expect.
The Karlaftis one is more of a mystery.

|01/16/2019 - 8:45am||Homemade - if you're getting…||
Homemade - if you're getting lumps may be that you're adding too much flour too fast. You can either slowly mix the flour with a little water/broth and whisk in before adding it in to the rest of the ingredients or just sift it in in small amounts. Good gravy should be slow - low heat, stir constantly. If your consistentcy is off you can often rescue it the same - slowly adding the opposite ingredient (flour if too thin, broth/water if too thick) until it's back to the consistency you want.
I want to beat OSU this year. everything else is gravy. There - made it about sports

if they can make it through the next 6 games they'll have gone a full calendar year since their last non-National Championship-game loss. Feb 6, 2018 @Northwestern was the last time they lost prior to the title game. Helluva run.

McNamara has even less game snaps, therefore should lap both. Let's start Freshman QBs only because it worked for Clemson.

I'm sure it'll be a competition but it seems unlikely that Shea, who posted one of the better QB seasons in recent memory at Michigan, maturing into his second year in the system (albeit a modified one under Gattis), who's worked an entire season to develop timing and rhythm with his WRs as the starter, will cede his position to Dylan. Dylan may be good but this isn't like Trevor Lawrence showing up on campus - he's been here for several years, is a known quantity, coming off an injury, seems to be very good in limited duty, and may be faster than Shea, but hasn't taken the starting job away from him yet. It would be a serious coup for Dylan to put Shea on the bench.

|01/14/2019 - 11:49pm||Ulizio got passed on the…||
Ulizio got passed on the depth chart and the options behind him/incoming at his position are many. Solomon was getting solid rotational minutes and fighting off injuries, and his position is one where we have very little depth. Your point is fair that we as fans should have similar feelings for any student athlete leaving the team in terms of gratitude for their contribution but the situations are not the same. Losing a backup tackle who was likely getting passed by everyone including incoming freshman at a position where you essentially hope the same guy plays every down is not the same as the expected starter at a position with little depth and experience where regular rotation is required to stay fresh.

Really cool idea and great way to learn more about some of the teams that pre-date my fandom. I didn't move to Michigan until the early 90s so my understanding of history has come from a couple books and that's about it. Thanks for adding this to the roster and hope you'll be able to get through some of the more interesting teams at the least if not the whole history.

They can pull Martell's scholarship as soon as he enters the portal however, so while it's most likely Hurts is going to Auburn wouldn't it just be our luck that OSU sends Martell packing, picks up Hurts for his final season and has FIelds to take over the next year.

There was some incident with a UGA baseball player using racial slurs towards him. He's nabbed Shea's lawyer who helped the Ole Miss guys last year. Something about not feeling safe at UGA. I never heard about the original incident when it happened so don't know specifics but that's the gist. |01/10/2019 - 12:14pm||How many years do you think…||
How many years do you think Don Brown will keep coaching? That's probably the biggest factor. If he doesn't leave for a HC job (which despite the Temple thing seems increasingly unlikely) he'll probably be here a few more years before retiring or getting canned if we decide we need someone else to beat OSU or something.
While that plays out, Partridge will still be chased by top programs and I'm sure someone will dangle DC at him at some point, if not an elite program, then one who would take a flier on him.
If Brown leave/retires inside of 3-5 years, we might keep CP to groom him as heir-apparent, but if he doesn't, chances are he'll move on to a new role. Good-recruiting assistants who are decent-to-good coaches will always be in demand.

Brian actually addressed this a bit on the podcast he did with Nick Hopwood. He said he didn't even want them to have press passes and such at first because he wanted to impartial and able to view the athletic department as an outsider. They've eventually acquired press passes but Brian himself almost never uses those and instead watches games in person or on TV and doesn't attend things like coach/player press conferences.
I'm sure he's developed some trusted sources but I don't think they're directly staff members of the teams.

I once exchanged semi-anonymous emails with the owner of this little bookstore in NYC. I really liked our correspondence but it turned out my business competed with hers directly and was slowly putting her out of business. When I found out it was her, I wasn't sure what to do, but it all worked out in the end and we fell in love. She reminded me a lot of this woman I met on top of the emprire state building this one time. Also a volcano.
|01/09/2019 - 1:06pm||Not refuting your point…||
Not refuting your point about coaches, per se, but this may be an oversimplification a bit - talent at key spots matters as well as overall talent - Clemson won that game with a killer QB, NFL level D-Line, top WRs, and a good O-Line, along with a good gameplan. Bama has dramatically better talent than Clemson on all those links (100-140 points better) but some key position groups outplayed Bamas position groups in that game. Also players have to make plays, which Clemson had happen in that game.
Also OSU as 50, 75, and 120 points (roughly) better than Michigan in all of those years, with 2016 being the closest.
I concede your point that we're very comparable to Clemson in those metrics, however, which does speak to coaching and usage of talent, but matchups and position groups should also factor in. Not to mention luck and football being football. Clemson beat a 9-4 Texas A&M team by 2 and a 10-3 Syracuse team by 4 points earlier this season. Syracuse was Lawerence's first start and after that they blew everyone out including Alabama over. It that on Xs and Os or maybe this kid's that good?
|01/09/2019 - 10:55am||Sam mentioned this as well…||
Sam mentioned this as well on WTKA this morning - Foote's not interested in the college game at this point unless he's up for a D-Coordinator position, and even then it might not be enough to lure him away from the pros. Implied he likes he likes coaching adults at the pro level and isnt so much for recruiting.

|01/08/2019 - 9:30am||True but we've seen flashes…||
True but we've seen flashes from Paye and Hutchinson to think we'll be ok at DE, whereas we have virtually no certainty at DT. Replacing Bush is a challenge but Hudson coming back was big there for the LBs and we have a ton of bodies to throw at the position group to find a winner. CBs will be ok with Thomas and Vert as the top 2, but the third spot is where the concern lies - again a ton of option there though. With safety, hopefully Dax lives up to the hype and slots in to a starting role to cement that one. It's not all doom and gloom but DT is very worrysome.
|01/08/2019 - 9:13am||I wouldn't say any of the…||
I wouldn't say any of the team on our schedule aren't winnable games except for OSU which I'll say forever until we beat them again.
The schedule isn't a cakewalk but we do get byes before going to UW and before playing MSU. PSU on the road but they'll take a step back again this year. Notre Dame will be very tough again but they're coming to A2 this time. The others are all games that are at least winnable. At the same time there's almost no room for error with tricky non-conference games to start the season, cross over with Iowa, and going on the road to Indiana before OSU.
We have some major questions marks still on D and offense will need some new tricks. That said, I'm not ready to hang a definite preseason L next to anything other than OSU right now.

LOL at 247 putting Penn State as a top 10 team next year. McSorely and Miles Sanders are gone. Tommy Stevens is going to lead you to the promised land? After being unable to beat our McSorely his whole career? Ok. They're 15-19 in most of the other polls, which feel about right.
I'd say us at 11 sounds about right too. Not quite top ten unless some things change on offense. The defense has some major questions marks and shoes to fill at DT, linebacker, and CB/Safety. Hope the young guys can step up.

|01/07/2019 - 1:21pm||Well if he's going there to…||
Well if he's going there to be the new defensive coordinator, good for him. Coach Mattison's given a ton to Michigan over the years and if this is something he wants, then I'd hope we as a fan base could support him. For the "oh no he's going to our rival" crowd - and I mean this as no offense to Coach Mattison - but so what? It sucks for our player development but either we'll get worse and still lose to OSU (already been doing that with him on our staff ), stay the same and maybe still lose to OSU, or hire someone new and get better and beat OSU (will need more than just the D-Line to improve). Let's not shit on a guy who has given many great years to our team. He is and was a great coach who was generally loved by the players and developed some serious talent to play our our D-Lines and put guys in the league.

Their last loss besides Nova in the title game? @Northwestern on 2/6/18. Not what I was expecting. That said if they can win their next 8 games (which is a tough stretch with pesky NU at home, UW on the road, Indiana on the road, and OSU at home, among others) they could go a full calendar year with only one loss to Nova in the title game. Random but kinda cool thing to root for.

Based on the agreement, it was a "mutual-parting" - he sure as hell didn't just quit for funsies. He didn't leave for another job - he wasn't picked up by USC until March 5th and there was no mention of USC in any of the "Drevno resigns" articles from late February.
If he quit under his contract he owed Michigan $150,000K unless he was taking a head coaching job. They didn't ask for the money and in fact paid him out a portion of his salary.
|01/03/2019 - 8:49am||Toledo. Honestly I don't…||
Toledo. Honestly I don't care. I don't think our offensive scheme overall is problematic as much as we could be tweaking formations, tempo, and specific play calls/sequencing to improve the overall rhythm of the offense to keep defenses on their toes.
What I really want is a fully operational offensive line filled with redshirt junior and senior starters, a QB who has spent more than 1 year in the system, and well-coached WRs. Have we had that yet in the JH era?
Offense comes down to execution more often than not - line needs to make its blocks, QB needs to make reads and throw, WRs need to catch, RBs need to cut and hit holes hard. In the last four years can you really argue we've had all the pieces we need there? Yes we need to put these guys in the best position to succeed and that's on the coaches/playcalling. Our offense was top-25 this year with a QB in his first year having a playbook, an offensive line that finally had competent coaching, and WRs that weren't freshman and had someone to prepare them as well. Regardless of coordinators, this offense will make another jump next year just based on the O-Line, QB, and WRs making another year of progress. Improved playcallign and hitting on Turner or Charbonnet and we'll be top 15 or better on offense.

|01/03/2019 - 7:18am||I would be surprised if Pep…||
I would be surprised if Pep is still with the team by the start of spring practice. There's some wisps of smoke that he's sniffing around and/or being pushed out. Harbaugh has had good track record of repairing and addressing issues with his staff.
After Durkin left and he went out and looked for "the best DC available" which he flat out said was his only criteria when making the hire. He made it. He pushed out Drevno when it was clear he had dropped the ball in recruiting and developing talent and couldn't make it work with Frey. He brought in a guy who's widely considered one of the best O-lIne coaches in the country (Alabama has been in touch with Warriner this year, if you need more evidence). He needed to pick up recruiting and brought in Al Washington (recruited Trente Jones, Kalil Branham in '20 class, Erick All) and Sherrone Moore (recruited Dax Hill, Mazi Smith, Keegan). Now everyone's freaking out that OSU might poach Washington.
Harbaugh is far from perfect, makes plenty of questionable decisions, and is sometimes slower to make changes (Drevno), but he's generally made the right staffing decisions. Give it a few weeks. If Pep stays, which again I'd be surprised, they can still make changes to the offense. If he goes, you're looking at a new pass game coordinator which means a new system and a new learning curve, so it's not like that's gonna be an instant fix. It'll just make us feel better because we have a shiny new thing to crucify later when we don't like the product on the field.

Yes that’s right it’s “Something went wrong during the season so let’s revisit every idiotic argument that’s already been beaten to death so we can soothe our aching wounds” season. Didn’t think we’d get to the Jay Harbaugh is an underqualified shitty RB coach who is just benefitting from nepotism one just two days into the new year though. Might be a record. Can we revisit if Brady Hoke would have won more games had he worn a headset tomorrow guys?
