2020 FB Elite Recruits and Michigan's Lack of Inroads

Submitted by Lakeyale13 on February 22nd, 2019 at 9:22 AM

Question for Magnus, UMBig11, or anyone who has some insight into Michigan and their recruiting abilities.

Michigan has won 10 games multiple times.  Harbaugh is considered an elite Coach.  The depth chart looks quite favorable for elite players at many positions. Thus, what factors are / have played into Michigan seeming to not be in the mix for elite recruits, especially for the 2020 cycle?

(I know its early) But looking at 247's top 100, Michigan appears to be in the mix (defined by either the crystal ball leader or secondary leader) for exactly one of the top 100, and that is #100 Kalel Mullings.  By comparison, OSU is in the mix (CB leader or secondary leader) for 17 of the top 100 players.

Have the coaches failed to be able to make relationships.  Does everyone else look at our 10 win seasons and not place as much value on them as we do?  Outside of Michigan, do people not have the same level of confidence in Harbaugh and his coaching as we do?  Would love to hear other people's thoughts too.

been almost a whole week since we covered this topic - https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/2020-recruiting-0  - No offense to OP if this is a genuine question, but the responses will be virtually the same

this issue was mentioned the other day and some of the guys stated that the early CB's are a bit of a manufactured mirage (my words, not theirs).  they implied that the schools will have folks CB the recruits as early as possible to build up some momentum, even if the recruit has given little or no feedback to have someone put in a CB.  at least, that was how i interpreted that.

I feel like it can't be the latter - do people who don't "really follow recruiting" casually visit the 247 top 100 page for a recruiting class for shits and giggles? Or are we just looking to have a discussion of a certain kind?

OPs posting history seems to recently have focused on how Harbaugh isn't "elite" so maybe this is just a backwards way of continuing that discussion? At least we have a whole 10 minutes before the Hei2man/Maizen soliloquy of the day.

I'm sure it is, it's just silly how little effort the trolls give their takes anymore. It's February. We just signed the top class in the conference. We currently have a top ten class for 2020. 247 will still re-rank about 4 times. Charbonnet was not a top 250 recruit at this time last year. Nobody knew we were even involved with Dax Hill this time last year.

Any level of recruiting awareness above total and complete ignorance would tell someone to not worry one iota about our 2020 class right now.

Excellent clear and succinct assessment. I love the recruiting gig...I am inpatient too-want Myles, Rogers and Gentry to commit yesterday. The fact is that, even for Alabama, this is a roller coaster ride. A long way to go. A stellar 2019 season will help. Neither the fans' joy nor their consternation affects this one iota.

Kids that are committed to Stanford and can get in to Stanford (and Myles can) don't usually decommit from Stanford. So, I wouldn't hold your breath for Myles Hinton. We won't give up since we have his brother, but unless they really tank this year, or playing with his brother really tugs on his heart strings, he's probably going to be a Cardinal.

We're clearly trending well for Rogers though. I like Gentry, I think the Baker kid from AZ has a tonn of potential. OL recruiting will be very strong as long as Ed is here.

I am always amazed when someone chooses to be condescending, arrogant and self righteous in their response to a Blog post.

As much as I am aware, this is a Michigan Football Blog.  I simply posted a topic I am interested in.  I am not so much "concerned" as I am interested in why things are the way they are. That was my reason for posting.

I concur that this was a completely unnecessary post.  There is a good Friday vibe going with MSU coming to town.  Frankly, football recruiting or even lack thereof could not be further from my mind.  Really my preferred Michigan athletic team is in the thick of a great season right now so the football team can stay in timeout for a minute.

Michigan football is my priority 1, 2, and 3 sport at Michigan (I love MBB too I'm just a football freak), and even I know that it's foolish to waste this time of basketball season worrying about somewhat arbitrary rankings that will change many times in the next 10-12 months.

If the recruiting class hasn't changed at all by September, we can all freak out together then.

I think the issue, OP, that I have it that your question presupposes a problem that may or may not be there. If you don't follow recruiting, that's fine, but then why assume there's a problem? If you do follow recruiting, I, like the Dr., would be suprised you would think there's a problem to begin with.

Look at Justin Rogers as one example. 5 star kid, tops in the state. CBs are split OSU and GA right now. People point and say "Michigan can't even get a top kid from in state..rabble rablle" - and yet over the last few weeks he's been to campus a couple times and is supposed to be back for the State game this weekend. Does that mean we will have a CB for him on Monday? No. But the staff is "in it" for this kid.

A lot can happen in a year. Would we have more 5 star CBs at this stage if we'd gone to the CFP or smacked around OSU? Maybe. If we lead for a bunch of 5 stars right now, would anyone on the blog feel good about us landing them in 10 months? doubtful.

Thanks for that info. See, that was the purpose of my post.  I didn't know why we seemed behind on top level recruits so I asked a question.  You just gave me great information and clarified our recruiting situation that I wasn't aware of.  Thank you for that.  Seriously.

But how freaking sensitive has this board become that you cannot ask a question without being labeled a troll / potential troll.

I think that a lot of people assumed that with Harbaugh, our recruiting would sky rocket to like "never before seen" levels.  I confess that as early as 2016ish I was a little underwhelmed by the recruiting generally, particularly on the O-line.  I have kind of come to terms with the fact that regular Top 10 classes (let's call them Lloyd classes) is pretty much where we are.  There are worse things.  I just think some people are still waiting for some kind of astronomical leap that isn't happening.

That's the thing: you don't have to follow closely at all to know that we just signed the best class in the conference, or to know what month it is. Whether someone is truly concern trolling, or they're posting unfounded criticisms out of ignorance, they bring the same amount of angst to the fanbase and I'm just sick of it.

We've had a top ten class 3 out 4 cycles under Jim. We just signed the best class in the conference. It's February. Recruiting is fine.

You're missing the whole point of my post...perhaps I didn't do a good job in communicating my thoughts.

My post is a confession of my ignorance.  I am trying to understand why it seems to be so quiet in the 2020 cycle with recruits and elite recruits at that.  Zero trolling.  Just asking a question on a Blog to get information from people that know a lot more than me.

Your lack of tolerance is surprising.

We will land some big recruits in the 2020 class.  If you are looking for a reason why recruits are not fawning over Michigan right now, the simplest explanation is often the correct one.  We played a fairly highly anticipated and viewed game on November 24, 2018.  If you don't recall how it went I would You Tube it to get a refresher, but I do caution you that there are side-effects, including possible self-injury.  We then followed that up with an epic bed-shitting a month later in our bowl game.

tl;dr - We just got our face pounded by OSU and replaced like half our staff.  2020 may not be a legendary class.

My tolerance for unfounded negativity is razor thin and my tolerance for trolling is nonexistent - you have to see how your OP drips with the classic signs of both, right?

There's nothing wrong with recruiting - we've been recruiting at a top ten level under Jim and it's incredibly early in the cycle. There's nothing to be concerned about in February. Enjoy some basketball.

Yes, I can see how my post could be interpreted as someone trying to be negative, but it wasn't my intention nor purpose.

I simply went to a recruiting site, 247 sports.  I then clicked on the top 100 recruits and counted the number of recruits that OSU was in on and the number of recruits Michigan was in on.  I then made an observation and asked a question based upon the data they represented on their site.

I had no agenda whatsoever other than to understand why Michigan (according to the website I went to) had very little interest from the top 100 recruits.

One thing I enjoy about this blog is that you better have a good idea what you are talking about and/or have references/data to support what you are discussing. If not, there are plenty of smart people here who will.

This is a good reminder for everyone who wants to create a board post that even simply asking a question to the community works better if you provide more insight than a random data point from one of Michigan's rivals.

If you interact / speak to people whom you find naive and ignorant the way in which you have with me than I can only imagine you are quite difficult to get along with.

I am sure you naively and ignorantly believe you can speak to people that you disagree with in such a manner and think that most will find favor in your behavior.  In reality, it reflects quite poorly on you and displays a lack of maturity in expressing negative / contrary feelings to another person.

This is a bit of advice that will hold true for the rest of your life and has been true for about 20 years now, and it to is condescending: do a modicum of research on the internet  before asking a question. That would have led you to find: Michigan just closed with the best class in the B1G for the first time in forever, its current class is ranked #11 in the country, and that there was a post on this exact topic in this exact topic a week or so ago.

You deserve the dragging.

One class does not a trend make...  We have missed on a TON of elite recruits.  Should we be worried yet? No.  But to ask a question and seek out the opinions of others is not ignorant, especially when naming "board experts" in said question.  Being a total douche about it though, completely unnecessary.

February 23rd, 2019 at 2:34 PM ^

Did yall read the comments or are yall just comenting just too coment.  The person said he researched the top 100 recruits and only 1 is interested in Michigan.  He only asked for your opinion on the subject and to hold a decent conversation to talk about.  If you can't add something to the conversation don't respond by calling everybody a troll if you can't comprehend what the OPs is trying to get out of the subject.  It's more Michigan Mgoblog legends that troll Michigan more than the so called trolls do, but the difference is they have a million points and new comers dont.

Yikes! Rough morning, Doc?

Not sure why it’s ignorant to state a concern, provide some facts, and cautiously ask “what’s going on?” Is it fair to be concerned? Sure. Is it fair to recognize today’s position may not be indicative of where we end up? Sure...

It’s neither ignorant nor cause to label someone a troll. Chillax.
