growing up (or in lately) nobody has ever told me to get off their lawn, and i've followed suit, with respect to my lawn - which i do mow and care for/about...but in the end, it is just... grass
compared to a few decades of on-campus child rape, I would guess that a frat-boy (over the age of 18) beat down is not going to garner much concern amongst many PSU fans
there's a river that flows through 'happy valley' (and Africa), called da nile
this overly simplified analysis would need to filter through a host of variables; for instance: personnel, mismatches (either way) and defensive sets - to name just a few
expanding the playoff to include 8 teams would mean seven (playoff) bowl games would likely have great ticket sales and get huge tv ratings and make the NCAA a shit-ton of money - and draw in more fans into the process (end of the year games, playoff selection, etc).
my first, and one of the few bowl games i will watch this season will be saturday (UM v UF)
if/when Saban's team receives a #5 or #6 end of the year playoff ranking, that might cause nick to have a change of heart
Jim Jefferies (on gifts for spouses or sig-nif others), "its a mathematical equation that every man has in his head, and it goes like this, “How much money do I have to spend today so that you won’t act like a c*nt?”"
perhaps you could apply the Pythagorean theorem to arrive at proper gift/amount, but typically its a moving target
...and VERY telling! Take note all recruits considering 'the institution' you'll be attending rather than just the football program you'll be playing for
unfortunately the only viable strategies for schools are either; 1) stupid or 2) quite difficult:
1) don't recruit or coach your players up to a NFL caliber level, and the bowl games and the NFL draft probably won't ever be much of a factor/concern for your players or your school
2) qualify for the playoffs and play for a Nat'l championship ...though that's not entirely full-proof, as you could still get a player that chooses to 'sit out' of a NCAA playoff or championship game to prepare for NFL draft ...or as not to risk re-injuring something that would cost him millions in the draft
UM should aspire to open up this dialogue every year about as many players as they can - because having many bonafide NFL draft prospects beats the opposite (having none)
Some will play (bowl game), some will stay (another year), some will go (wish them well and hope they become great NFL players, upstanding citizens and ambassadors for the UM program)
isn't the first, won't be the last - but EVERY school deals w/the near misses, as that's the nature of the beast in the courtship of 17 & 18 yr olds
the focus is and should be on the 'gets' not those that 'got away'
'19 UM team will be even better than '18 - even w/o those graduating and leaving early ...and that's with or w/o Patterson, though I strongly suspect he returns
Day & the OSU will still recruit very well, but Urban was a force on the recruiting trail since FL... and losing Urbz will be greatly missed by the Buck-holes
Tressel was considered a rather low-key hire - and look what he did
I met Bobby Knight at b-ball camp years ago (in his prime), he is and has always been world class d-bag... probably has some good qualities, but mostly, just your garden variety insecure bully
Detroit's 'comeback' is kinda like non-surgical weight loss - however long it took to put on that gut, its going to take about the same time to take it off
...DET's renaissance isn't going to be a lap-band procedure, but rather a slow but steady progression - but its coming (the tax base has been returning to the city)
football recruit flips and school/program (underclassmen & grad) transfers are, and will continue to become more prevalent in the current NCAA model ...so get used to it
6. Lewerke, who has looked pretty bad all year, will likely find a way to start throwing darts into tight windows against UM secondary. UM 'has to' put pressure on him - he's been playing w/happy feet and a quick erratic trigger this year in the face of any meangingful pass rush.
As good as UM looked against Wisky, Dantonio (who always seems to have the same 'just smelled someone's rotten fart' facial expression) always puts together a good game plan that confounds UM at some level. In game adjustments (by UM) will be necessary.
Here's hoping we see the UW game UM's imaginative offense and UM's 2nd half defense, and UM 'should' win by two TD's or more.
two years ago, one of my best friends I grew up with, who played D-1 basketball, was diagnosed w/Amyloidosis (a disease that causes the body to produce an abnormal protein that attacks vital organs...heart, liver, kidneys, etc); he's been receiving treatment (no cure) at Mayo to control the protein production. In short, it's a M'F'er ...wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy
i've had many types of football/sports injuries (concussions, broken bones, knee injuries, hip pointers, turf toe, several surgeries, etc) but shoulder injuries are the worst I've ever had to deal with (had two "frozen shoulders" at the same time)...6 months of pain, agony and little to no sleep...and three years later, still don't have full range of motion yet.
so my heart goes out to anyone dealing w/a shoulder issue ...evolution could/should have treated us better with regard to the assembly of the human shoulder
at least a few of those 'Higdon jamming himself into the pile where the play was designed to go' plays, Higdon could/should have cut to the opposite outside to open field ...so in some cases the 'unimaginative play call' was magnified by operator (ball carrier) error
I hope Manuel/UM sends a highlight real to the B10 league office showing the 40+ holding calls NOT called on opposing teams to UM defense (hell, Gary & Winovich have had a couple dozen obvious holds NOT called, just between the two of them)
...and then play all of the holding calls against UM offense
and have the league try to explain the glaring double standard - and more importantly WHAT they're going to do about it...preferably in the PSU, MSU and OSU games specifically
offensive holding could be called on almost any offensive play... its the when? and the why? that is especially frustrating - especially a holding call on someone that was nowhere near the play or had any effect on the play
although not as ridiculous as the Higdon holding call, the holding call against Rutledge (on a 15 yard? Patterson scramble) was also ticky-tac (at best)
...and don't get me started on 'pass interference' calls (and the announcers justifications after watching replays) - and HOMER REFS - I saw a lot of homer calls in the games I watched on Saturday.
the predictability of UM's offense is on full display when NW had 8 men in the box anticipating a run, and instead of checking out of the play, UM ran right into the pile
other team's have exploited the 7-8 yard quick slant on first and second down against a very good UM defense... not sure why UM hasn't tried to employ that strategy into their first few series - and thus force opposing D's to overplay the short routes and possibly free up the deeper hitch and go routes for UM WR's
also a few designed QB draws could also help keep opposing LB's and safeties more off balance
UM's O-line is not going to be one that plows a lot of holes against better defenses - but a more imaginative (nothing crazy, just more 1st a/o 2nd down safe passes) play selection could help the O-line become more effective
i agree, the godsend is the "previous" button on the remote - and hopefully a schedule of 'good games' on the other networks to jump to at every injury, just about every time-out and seemingly 5+ minutes of commercials even between quarters
the 3:30 start time usually have some other great matchups, whereas the noon kickoffs are usually don't provide a lot of other games worth watching
my 2 cents on the whole 'targeting' and 'crown of the helmet' issue... i played football in the 80s when you were taught (on offense and defense) to lower your head and tackle or take on a tackler ...and I've got teammates that have been dealing with serious dementia (CTE) issues from football, BUT what i can't understand is if a ball carrier is lowering his head to take on a tackler, what is a tackler supposed to do? stay standing upright and let the ball carrier bull-over you? ...and if you lower your head, and therefore, your eyes are not forward, if the ball carrier moves his helmet slightly up or slightly right or left - then the tackler could unavoidably helmet to helmet the runner - and get ejected AND penalized.
I'm all for penalizing and kicking guys out for tacklers using their helmets as torpedoes against defenseless players, but the move this year to eject/penalize for seemingly incidental helmet-to-helmet is excessive in the college games I've seen ...oh, and inconsistent also - for example the other #15 blocker (not Winovich) who went down (injured) from a helmet to helmet hit on a kick or punt return... and no call there...
My heart and best wishes go out to those in the path of Florence... having lived through 4 hurricanes and a couple major tropical storms in my lifetime, including the 50-60 inches of rain dumped in and around my neighborhood during Harvey last August.
Best advice: 1) leave if you can, 2) water and wind always win, 3) seeing flood water pouring into your home is something you'll never forget or want to live through again, 4) Vaya Con Dios...or whomever or whatever gets you through it.
at ND, MSU, NW and OSU - and home against UW & PSU ...if they can make it through that schedule with only one loss, without question they'll deserve to make the playoffs
to recap: after 12 long hours and a lot of greasy pizza, to symbolize their consensus decision; the OSU Board of Trustees pulls out a dusty ol' igloo cooler with 'accountability' written (misspelled) on its side in black magic marker, and then the entire 20-person OSU Board formed a congo-line of sorts and then proceeded drop trou and defecate one-by-one into that scarlet and gray colored cooler - until it was just about full
...and for the finale, Urban Meyer got to 'top it off', as the board members bowed to their squatting 'leader' ...and Meyer was also presented with 20 buckeye helmet stickers (one from each board/bored member) to commemorate his leadership through this difficult process
Amen to that Snarls! ...life is short and we all have our own baggage to carry - deliberately adding more unnecessary baggage only makes the journey harder
