Commence the Karlaftis Derby.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:25 AM ^
Jeff Brohm will be the next HC there..hope he stays through the year with Purdue. Really hate it when coaches jet before the season end very unfair to players.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:52 AM ^
Purdue was just blown out by Minnesota. don’t see much benefits of him staying if his heart is gone.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:13 AM ^
yeah, after this news got out, i wondered if the two were related. i imagine back channels had already reached out to brohm by this past weekend.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:07 AM ^
I agree. Unless a coach is in a playoff game, I am OK with anyone who wants to get a head start on recruiting at the new school. Is it nice to stay for the current team and finish the season? Sure, but I can totally understand why a guy leaves early. He has to look ahead to the future.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:52 AM ^
My only question with regard to Brohm is whether he could do better. Yes, he has a connection to Louisville, but Louisville is a pretty terrible program right now. You'd think that Brohm would get an offer from a team in the upper half of a P5 conference, if he wants it.
November 12th, 2018 at 1:31 PM ^
November 14th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
I'm not saying Brohm doesn't have the ability to turn a bad program into a respectable one, but Purdue was his first P5 opportunity, and he's done well with it. There's no reason he'd need (or want) to take on another rebuild if he's offered something much better.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:32 AM ^
Derby.
Louisville.
I see what you did there.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:22 AM ^
People should really stop horsing around.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
Bobby Petrino walks into a bar. The bartender says, "Why the long face?"
November 12th, 2018 at 9:22 AM ^
I hope he just sat quietly for a moment, disconnected his microphone, and awkwardly glided off set without speaking.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:24 AM ^
Yes I saw this screencap...was he asked about this during the broadcast? If so what was his response?
November 12th, 2018 at 9:26 AM ^
Apparently he was fired and nobody told him about it. So we fixed the glitch and Bobby won't be receiving a paycheck anymore. The rest will work itself out naturally.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:35 AM ^
Does he get to keep the stapler?
November 12th, 2018 at 9:35 AM ^
No, you don't understand. We fixed. The glitch.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:58 AM ^
That's ok. Papa John will slide a check under the door, and Bobby will grab it when he burns down the athletic department.
I said no salt!
November 12th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
I don't think so, UL and Papa John's parted ways earlier this year.
November 12th, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Pretty sure it will be strychnine in the Gatorade coolers...but splitting hairs ya
November 12th, 2018 at 9:27 AM ^
OUTSIDE THE CARDS
November 12th, 2018 at 9:30 AM ^
the show was taped. Petrino was not sitting there live while the crawl came across the screen.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:37 AM ^
Almost too bad, because that would have been in the running for the most awkward coach moment since Dwight Howard put his arm around SVG...
November 12th, 2018 at 9:39 AM ^
You're harshing my buzz, man.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:33 AM ^
At least he wasn't wearing this:
November 12th, 2018 at 9:55 AM ^
Or wearing this (cuz you cant have one without the other)
November 12th, 2018 at 10:15 AM ^
She was definitely hot.
And, interestingly enough, she ended up getting married...less than 18 months later...to someone else on the athletic staff.
Girl got around
November 12th, 2018 at 10:23 AM ^
Must have been on the rebound.
November 12th, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
Yeah...associates in AR say the motorcycle accident was more of a cover for "got his ass beat by the boyfriend"...but guess that's less embarrassing for the program.
November 12th, 2018 at 7:28 PM ^
That whole news conference complete with the background, his neck brace, the road rash on his face, belongs in the life-is-stranger-than-fiction hall of fame. One cannot have written this without being attacked as being too contrived and far fetched.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:37 AM ^
Louisville is a shit show right now. And I gotta be honest - as much of a degenerate as he is, I thought he was a better coach than this. I'm shocked - SHOCKED - I tell you, that they've fallen this far, this fast.
Welcome home, Jeff!
Welcome back, George!
November 12th, 2018 at 11:17 AM ^
It was a bad look for Louisville to rehire Petrino at all. But they don't seem to really care about that whole character issue.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:48 AM ^
If I’m Brohm, I don’t take that job. Purdue is a good job in a division you can win. Use this opening to get a good raise and keep going. It’s a lateral move at best anyway.
November 12th, 2018 at 9:58 AM ^
Purdue is not a good job. There's only one job I would choose Purdue over in that division: Illinois. Even then it would come down to recruiting footprint.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:12 AM ^
I don’t think it’s a bad job. Not a great one, and certainly not a destination program, but it’s not bad.
Purdue has at least shown in the past that it can win, as long as the head coach sticks around long enough to fully implement his system. I’d certainly take the Purdue job over Minnesota (easier recruiting footprint and around more talent), Northwestern (good program and great school but really hard to recruit there due to academic requirements) Illinois or Indiana, both of which are either perpetually stuck in football limbo or are just cursed to always get close to winning big games, but can never finish the job.
I’d certainly say Nebraska and Wisconsin are better jobs in that division, but Purdue isn’t a rathole if a job. Their problem is just that, like any other mid-tier program, any good coach who comes along isn’t going to stick around very long since he’s heading off to greener pastures if he is any good. So when he leaves, you’re back at square one again 2-3 years later. And when you make a bad hire, your program is in the hole even further, and since you can’t recruit top tier guys consistently, it makes climbing out that much harder.
November 12th, 2018 at 12:18 PM ^
I don't disagree with your assessment. What I find interesting, Brohm is talked about as a hot commodity, while I hardly hear any conversation about Stoops at Kentucky. You could argue Stoops has had the more impressive season overall. I wonder if our view of Brohm is heavily tilted because of familiarity and recruiting Karlaftis?
My reason for pointing this out, Louisville may be Brohm's only real option to move on from Purdue given his current resume. If he really wants a big time job, it very well could be in his best interest to stay at Purdue if he truly thinks he can get them to 8-9 wins for two years in a row.
Because it is his alma mater, I would be surprised to see him take the Louisville job and leave it in 2-3 years.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:25 AM ^
As long as Purdue is in the Big Ten West, it's a good job.
Indiana is jealous, they would have won that thing by now.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:16 AM ^
You are right, Purdue is a "good" job. They likely will never win a B1G championship. They may someday represent the West. The West is really down this year and it was there for the taking and all Purdue did was lay an egg. As long as OSU, Michigan, PSU and MSU are in the East, it is very unlikely Purdue can win a B1G championship. On the other hand, other than Clemson, Louisville could be very competitive against all the other teams in ACC sooner rather than later with the right coach. And perhaps most importantly, Louisville is home.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:10 AM ^
funny but they used to say the same things about the SEC West when Florida and Tennessee were dominant.
Things change
November 12th, 2018 at 10:16 AM ^
Drew Brees ain't walking through that door again.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:41 AM ^
Wrong.. Purdue historically has had great QBs..... they mine Texas very well... surprised they didn't snag Mayfield. You probably think Brees was the only good qb they got, hence your comment....
Gary Danielson and Jim Everett, Bob Griese, Kyle Orton, among others... thats five long term NFL starters...
one can argue they've had equal qb talent to ours, these past four decades...
November 12th, 2018 at 9:57 AM ^
if he gets to be paid the 14mil, not bad for him. Kansas’s job is still available, maybe he can make fat Charlie jealous.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:03 AM ^
Normally I’d say that’s wrong to do to a coach and you should at least wait until that segment airs before you post the news. But Bobby Petrino is one of the biggest, if not the biggest scumbag in the game of football. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but when he bolted from a Louisville for the NFL, didn’t he skip town and not even bother telling his players about it face to face? Didn’t he leave them a post it note or something?
He deserves whatever he gets.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:29 AM ^
When he left the Falcons after a game, or two, he left post-it notes on the lockers. Don't know what he did when he left Louisville for Atlanta, though... But yeah, the incident you're referencing was when he left the NFL.
In either case, the man is a scumbag...
November 13th, 2018 at 7:59 AM ^
Your ban on college coaches is worse than my errors.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:33 AM ^
I say Brohm stays at Purdue.. he has a good thing going there...I guess it'll be his assessment of his future QB after the starter leaves. Going to Louisville is a risk, ala RR, a former player/alum returning to alma mater.. if it goes south, he will be persona non grata....
November 12th, 2018 at 11:13 AM ^
Except RR was a hero at his alma mater, West Virginia.
November 12th, 2018 at 11:20 AM ^
Well it depends on what he wants. If he wants the Louisville job, it's his. He could probably be hired today if that was what he really wanted. But if he opts to say at Purdue, there's no guarantee that job opens again anytime soon.
That being said, if he has his eyes on a bigger prize (Auburn, USC, etc.), he's likely going to have to wait unless someone really wants to roll the dice on him. Let's be honest: so far, his teams at Purdue are anything but consistent. One week, they're lighting the field on fire and beating the brakes off of OSU. The next, they're getting absolutely curb-stomped by an awful Minnesota team.
If I'm looking for a coach this year, I probably hold off on hiring Brohm. Right now, he looks like a high risk-high reward kind of hire. But Louisville is his alma mater, and my guess is they're willing to take the chance on him. So I bet he's off to Louisville at the end of the season.
November 12th, 2018 at 10:40 AM ^
This entire thing was amazing yesterday. If you were Brohm or any other coach looking at Louisville, this handling would not exactly spur confidence
November 12th, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
I don't get why Karlaftis would want to play for Petrino and Harbaugh, but not follow Brohm to Louisville.
Why the high confidence that, should Brohm leave Purdue, Karlaftis would come to Michigan?
Wouldn't he consider following Brohm?
Also Brohm leaving BIG10 for Purdue for Louisville? I know he played QB there and stuff, but man isn't that a giant slap in the face for BIG10?
