NOOOOOOO!!! NOOOOO... oh, wait. What's this? It's just Geddon.
Well crap. This means I don't get to post my annual "Cognitive Fragmentation" lecture about Draftageddon.
This format is actually just fine-- it's more or less what I was suggesting. Group and list as position rankings. At the end of the process, give some team rankings at each position group.
Oh well. I don't have Draftageddon to kick around anymore. I guess I'll go watch the news so I can still be furious.

Now we're talking. If I'm reading this correctly, it addresses one of the biggest issues repeated ad nauseam by opponents of paying players, which is "how do you decide who gets paid, and how much," to which I've always said, "let the market decide."
It looks like to me the stars who pull the most lucrative endorsements will get more $$ at the end (if they stay for the degree), which still allows the market to assign value to the sports, the teams, and the players instead of some some administrative chump at the NCAA or member school making those decisions.

Congrats to Croatia for a plucky run through the tournament, but France had a little too much talent across the pitch. What a party tonight. Champagne flowing like a river everywhere in France (except maybe the Le Pen household, I'm guessing).

Never been a fan of SSB. As many others point out, it's practically unsingable, and we've got better music in other patriot songs (e.g. Stars and Stripes Forever).
God Save the Queen gives chills. It doesn't have to be fast tempo to get people jacked. It makes the most hooliganny of hooligans weep.

Who wouldn't be ready to storm the Bastille after listening to tens of thousands sing "Les Marseillais"? I would only put God Save the Queen ahead on the list most rousing anthem.
They both sure as hell beat the worldwide contagion of 7 Nation Army.

|07/14/2018 - 2:28pm||Ultimately it's a cultural…||
Ultimately it's a cultural issue, right? You'll still have to spend the money on cleanup, but I was growing up in Texas when the "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign started. Yes, it was an anti-litter public service campaign, not a political or social middle finger to the rest of the country. The Fabulous Thunderbirds ad was my personal favorite:
It's difficult to pin down whether the money spent on the campaign was worth it (very fair article here (LINK) at Watchdog that is an interesting and relatively quick read. There was some evidence that litter pickup costs dropped after the campaign and especially after the one-year restart when it was brought back in 2014, but of course, that's correlative at best.
But what I can tell you is that it really did make a cultural impact. People got mad at litterers. Friends put social pressure on friends not to do it. If some kid at school let some trash start blowing away, the rest of us would yell "DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!" at them.
At the end of the day, social pressure is the only thing that ever changes attitudes towards anything.

I'm OK with the gap-filling "corporate citizenship" of the adopt-a-highway program, even if just for show.
It's the transfer of public responsibility for things like public education and prisons into corporate hands that makes me pull my hair out. Much like for-profit healthcare, the incentive is always to strip services to the bone and distribute the meat under the guise of "shareholder value."

They can only play until 11pm GMT (there's a curfew according to the announcers, and the facility shuts down), so there's a good chance the second semi will have to be split between tonight and tomorrow local time.
|07/13/2018 - 12:22pm||Co-sign completely.
If I'm going to slap the genius tag on anything, it's on the designer of a system that is easy to implement, consistent in its execution, and mad deadly. Simple design is genius if the function you get is high-level.
He's got an AK-47 of an offensive design. Not a bunch of complex moving parts, just the bare minimum and effective in almost all situations.
We've got an M16. Lots more parts, potentially very useful, but goddamn does it jam up all the time. Sophisticated isn't always better. Sometimes, it's demonstrably worse.

Of all the features I miss, the nice red "New" tag might be the biggest. It's not just the ones at the end, you might want to follow the ones in the middle where there's an ongoing repartee.
I like to signal that I went to Michigan by dropping words like "repartee."

I actually think this thread is reasonably cathartic despite being so shit-posty. We ought to have one of these once in a while just as a Purge-y way to get some of the bad blood out.
I still remember with great fondness the 600-plus comment Brexit thread, still the most epic, unlocked, no-holds barred riot of a thread I've ever seen on here. Those of us who slugged it out in that thread all night got a little worn down, but there's something like a runner's high that kicks in after you're brawling that long. You actually feel somewhat bonded to who you're fighting.
Kinda like rugby... you try to rip their head off for an hour or two, then you go do some drinking and singing with them at the pub (note to non-ruggers, this is what you do after a rugby match).

Sterling is such a quick-twitch dude, if he'd grown up in the US he'd have ended up as a slot ninja in some Big 12 spread offense. He's not a great finisher (from what I've seen in this tournament) but man does he stress out a defense.

Extra time really suffers under what might be the single dumbest rule in all of sports: not allowing unlimited substitution when you've got a bevy of superb players from some of the best first-divisions all over the world sitting on the bench doing nothing but holding their wankers.

Paraphrasing Homer Simpson, "I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my Michigan bloggers FLAMINGLY authoritarian."
I'm surprised more students at a place like UM don't vote, but then again, I don't remember local elections getting onto my radar screen at all when I was in A2. There was so much national noise it just got swept under. Plus, I didn't have a car and didn't really care that much about the state of the roads, nor did I own property so didn't have a dog in the property tax fight. But if I ever move back there, and I'd like to, I can see myself getting hyperventilated about exactly these kinds of things.

|07/01/2018 - 1:45pm||Which makes it all the more…||
Which makes it all the more ridiculous-- you have completely fresh world-class players sitting on the bench at the end. Overtime should come with unlimited substitutions. You brought the players from all over the world to the tournament. Excluding them from the pitch is absurd.
Even if you want the finality of PKs, the game of soccer is 90% dribbling, passing, marking, and tackling. It's not all about shooting a stationary ball. Give the ball to 2 offensive players from Team A out against 2 defenders plus goalie from Team B. They either score or Team B kicks it out of play or the goalie gets possession and the turn ends. Repeat with the other side until one team scores and the other doesn't. Basically the same concept as PKs, except you have to use the actual skills of the game you just played for 120 minutes.
There are a hundred different ways to end a game, and they picked the most random they could think of. Rock-paper-scissors would be an equally just means of determining the winner.

Penalties are a beyond-ridiculous way to end a match. It's like deciding a basketball game with a free throw contest.
But that said, that was a wild kick-save to end it. That Russkie goalie is going to get more local tail than a Miss Universe organizer. Peeing optional.

|07/01/2018 - 2:20am||Dodgy methodology is dodgy…||
Dodgy methodology is dodgy. All the things listed as "given" are the things you'd expect would be the products of good coaching. I'm not sure what's left after normalizing the sample for all those things... luck?
Does the method put the same people in roughly the same ranks (or quartiles, at least) year in, year out, or does it change like a list of "Best Mutual Fund Managers" year to year? (which is mostly luck... which is why you should invest in low-cost index funds, but that's a different discussion)
