Rumor: Ed Warinner a candidate for Kansas HC

Submitted by Larry Appleton on November 8th, 2018 at 4:25 PM

I was listening to Full Ride on ESPNU radio this morning, and Rick Neuheisel talked up Ed Warinner as a top candidate for the Kansas head coach job.  I've looked a bit online just now and haven't found anything to go with this, but . . .

- Warinner is a former OC at Kansas, including for their 2007 Orange Bowl team,

- He previously interviewed for the HC job back in 2014 when he was Co-OC at OSU.

Too early for anything substantial to happen, but I thought I might as well yell fire in a crowded theater and cause a panic.

Just trying to stir the pot for Michigan fans, I'm sure. He also predicted that PSU would get a big win over us last week, and we all saw how that prediction turned out.

There's nothing concrete for this to go on, but if Warriner wants a HC job, I don't blame him. I'd just tell him he can do better than KU. Much, much better. That place is probably the hardest P5 job to win at right now. Harder than Rutgers, where at least you're surrounded by good HS talent. You've got nothing out in Kansas.

So is he a top candidate because Rick Neuheisel thinks he should be or because KU is actually interviewing him?  Seems like Slick Rick is just spouting his personal nonsense to fill air.

Bingo!

I drive a lot of hours for my job and listen to Rick's show every day. He has a personal axe to grind with Harbaugh. When he lost to Jim's Stanford team once, Harbaugh "Schwartz's" him afterwards. Not shocking that he would put Warriners name out there.

I am a big Warinner fan.  There is only two coaches on Michigan staff that will make me lose sleep if we lost.  The Don and Harbs. Yes, I really like all the coaches on staff right now. But success will get them poached.  Just the reality of successful college football teams.

I'm pretty sure everyone involved in the decision to hire him at Michigan, on both sides, knew this was meant to be a short-term springboard for more high-ranking position elsewhere. One day soon, likely within the next 8 to 9 weeks, I'll read that he's accepted a position somewhere. If not this year, then next year. No biggie.

What ever Kansas offers him which won’t be much match it. Why in the world would you want to coach at Kansas? He won’t last 4 years. Not Saban would succeed there

I just posted this in Brian's Offensive UFR, but it is worth noting a few things. Warinner has been at 10 schools in his career . . . Akron, Army, MSU, Air Force, Kansas, Illinois, ND, Ohio State, Minnesota, and Michigan. He spent 13 years at Army, 4 at OSU & Kansas, and 1 or 2 years at each of the rest. He has been a coach at each of our key rivals: OSU, MSU, and ND. I know things went sour at OSU with the OC position. I think he could be a great run game coordinator. He could contribute greatly and collaboratively to the offensive game plan at Michigan. But . . . he probably should not be OC. I think it really comes down to what he wants to do. Head coach? Offensive Coordinator? He would have to move on. If he is content with OL & run game and a boatload of money, well, fire that cannon up and keep him in Ann Arbor!!!

Don't forget..Ed was kept down on the field his first year (2015) as Co-OC in Cbus, with Beck up in the box.  Only after the loss to Sparty did Meyer relent and put him in the press box and give him the keys to the car.  They then laid 86 points on good Michigan and ND teams.  He was also dealing with a basically absent WR coach, who was busy ordering $2200 worth of dildos online rather than teaching the toughest WR system in football.  Ed is a fine OC and a lights-out recruiter, particularly in Ohio.

Neuhuisel is a dink and has never liked Michigan.  Screw that guy.   And pay Warinner.

I would not be surprised if coaching O Line at Michigan is more enjoyable than the stress of trying to run/build a struggling program right now.

Gary Moeller won like three games in three years as HC at Illinois.  That’s not fun.

How much does that D coordinator at L$U make? Something like 2.5 large per year? Seems like 2 would be a bargain no? Hmm that means paying Don Brown the same at least. Okay Ward will have to put some serious thought into this.

Pay him what a true OC at Michigan would make. Make 1.5 million here and be the man doing what he does best or make a little more in Lawrence and have to coach FCS level talent

He was a miserable OC that got the position because of the Peter principle. I think he would be a pretty bad HC too. He is one hell of a line coach though and I hope we can retain him.

My son is a - you have no idea how hard this is for me to say - he's an OSU fan (I'm pretty sure it's motivated by spite). One of the things he has been complaining about is that OSU coaches DON'T get poached by other programs and move up the food chain. He thinks that's a really bad sign if no one is interested in your coaches, and he has a point.

The sky is falling!

Can't blame the man if he has the opportunity and/or the desire to be a P5 head coach.  I think he has done a tremendous job with our line, but when Harbaugh built the Death Star other programs are going to seek out his assistants. Part of the game...

Rick Neuheisel is not particularly credible, and this reads more like him just throwing names out there.  If Warinner leaves, then good luck to him.  But he's got a good thing going at Michigan and he could do a LOT better than Kansas if he waited a bit.
