Rumor: Ed Warinner a candidate for Kansas HC

Submitted by Larry Appleton on November 8th, 2018 at 4:25 PM

I was listening to Full Ride on ESPNU radio this morning, and Rick Neuheisel talked up Ed Warinner as a top candidate for the Kansas head coach job.  I've looked a bit online just now and haven't found anything to go with this, but . . .

- Warinner is a former OC at Kansas, including for their 2007 Orange Bowl team,

- He previously interviewed for the HC job back in 2014 when he was Co-OC at OSU.

Too early for anything substantial to happen, but I thought I might as well yell fire in a crowded theater and cause a panic.

I was listening to the 247 podcast with Chip Patterson and Barton Simmons and they had Dennis Dodd on and he said he went out to dinner with Les Miles and he said there’s mutual interest between both parties and that he already has a OC lined up and would run the spread. Dodd also said he expects them to make a move soon. Take it for what it’s worth.

Look I'm a Jayhawk and I don't think he should do it. KU has had one successful season of football due to an excellent QB who was just too short and an under-the-radar RB who went on to the NFL plus the tub of lard coach Mangino. Outside of that year it's a dumpster fire where coaching careers go to die. It's a basketball school and it's not even close.

Sure ...Harbaugh is also looking at a NFL job, so-and-so is looking to transfer, what's-his-name is in line to be the next HC at Maryland, etc. etc.

Let's just enjoy this season. If he chooses to leave, OK, congratulations and thank you for a great job. But I doubt it. For a lot of these coaching lifers, they reach a point where they aren't chasing that big job anymore - they are looking for a good position - a place that pays well, has good facilities, good support, and good recruiting but most of all, a HC they get along with. Don Brown seems to have found it. Greg Mattison seems to have found it. The guys who are hungry to be the HC at a program, you won't really be able to keep them with just money - they do want to go and see if they can be a HC. Look at Pat Narduzzi. He could have stuck around at MSU or taken his skills as a DC to somewhere that wanted his type of defense, but he wanted to be a HC so he took the Pitt job.

Kansas no doubt could pay more than what any assistant makes, but it also brings a lot of headaches, a lot of why-haven't-you-won-more-yesterday fans and alumni and AD that would some immediate bench mark like beating Kansas State and Iowa State.

If it were simply about money, a lot of programs would be in better shape (e.g. USC, Texas, Florida, ...)

I listened to Dennis Dodd talk about how Kansas wants a big name. In fact, Les Miles is the current name. They want boosters to put some serious coin into the program and facility development, so they’re going to want a significant name. That said, Warinner would make an excellent option for HC. If he decides to pursue that, I hope He is successful in achieving his career goal of being a P5 HC.

If Warriner couldn't cut it as an OC under Urban Meyer with a stable full of 5-star talent and a blank check from the athletic department, there's no way he can succeed as a head coach at a school that has 60 scholarship players, no in-state talent, hasn't broken 4 wins since the 2000s, regularly loses to FCS schools, and cycles through coaches every 2-3 years. I'd be surprised if he went.

Sounds like Mgoblog community needs to start a Gofundme account for Warriner, Don Brown, Zordich & Matttison to show our appreciation for these coaches.

Alot of deep pockets that are on this site that are willing to put our money behind the success of this team (including myself)

Yeah, people tend to forget about Zordich. We've had a great secondary for quite awhile. I was recently wondering why he doesn't receive more accolades from us.

We don't seem to make the "pay the man" comments about him.

I don't know the amount of his salary. Maybe he's already getting about the most for a secondary coach.

The most interesting thing in the post is that Kansas made it to the orange bowl. Guessing thats when they had aquib talib.

As far as him going to Kansas, I doubt it. How many times has this guy had to change jobs/move in the past 5 years? HCs usually get longer leashes than coordinators but the chances of being successful at Kansas are minimal.

His greatest strength is coaching the Oline. Can he coach the Oline with the same success rate while being a head coach? Doubtful

Warriner should be kept near the program no matter what he decides to do next year or the next 5 years. With how much we've struggled to develop OL and how other major programs struggle with it, he should be considered for the OC job and possibly the HC job after Harbaugh if he is groomed for it or proves he's capable elsewhere.

tl;dr - I love Warriner and think his ability to improve OL is incredibly valuable.
