Heisman Discussion about Denard on ESPN

Submitted by bluebyyou on

Here is a link to an article on Denard from ESPN's Heisman Watch section.  That Denard and Barry Sanders are talked about together is a great compliment.

"Now it's just getting ridiculous. I mean, at some point shouldn't we stop being amazed? We've seen it for five weeks now. Shouldn't we be used to it? I'm talking, of course, about Michigan QB Denard Robinson, and the answer is no. We haven't seen this type of college football playmaker since … Barry Sanders?"

He doesn't have to sustain it.   Even if he puts up numbers somewhere around 70 to75% of what he is putting up now, those will be some pretty incredible numbers.... and certainly enough to keep him the Heisman frontrunner.

That said, 2 things will be his key:   1) stay healthy, and 2) keep coming up big in big moments.   The guy has been clutch!    He needs to keep that up.   If he does, and if he stays healthy, he will win the Heisman.

The article also compares Denard Robinson favorably to Vince Young.

If you look at the numbers this season, Denard has a better QB rating than the other frontrunners, Kellen Moore, Terrelle Pryor, and Andrew Luck, and has a comparable amount of yards.  That's before considering DRob's rush yards, or the fact that he missed 3/4 of the Bowling Green game (though you could also say the other QB's have missed stat opportunities because they were pulled early in some blowouts).

Besides injury, the biggest impedent I see is the possibility of losing 4 or more games.

If he stays healthy and if he keeps this up for at least the next two weeks he's essentially a lock to be a finalist

Honestly, Magnus has gotten negbanged ten times worse for saying stuff that is at least 90% on the money.  The fact that this dumbassery isn't being immediately wiped out (and there are countless recent examples of similar nonsense) concerns me immensely (as someone with tons of MGoPoints who thought they used to mean something).

Passed for 2 TDs though, not like anyone below him did anything this week.  I really think that thus far the rest of the candidates have been pretty lackluster overall.  Aside from being astoundingly excellent that is a major reason Denard is getting so much attention from the outlets.

We have to do better then 1-7 in conference for him to have a shot.  Lowest win total in recent history to win heisman *9* with Tebow's 52 TD performance..

...when Denard reaches the second level, I start to laugh with glee (GLEE, dammit!), and it's perhaps the first time in my 30+ year "career" of watching Michigan games that that's happened on a consistent basis.

The irony of Michigan 2010 is amazing, though! Before posting, I read this board for a few years. Like me, many of us were sick to death of conservative, vanilla Lloydball. Well my friends, this is NOT it! Unfortunately, it comes with a defense that makes us nauseous for much of the game. Ugh!!

But it sure is exciting :)

The biggest difference in these next three games is that we are facing a tougher front seven then we have seen all year. This is going to be the test of how well our Oline is playing by the holes they are able to open up.

It will also be a big game for the coaches. Honestly, our play calling has seemed rather vanilla so far, in that we have not had to pull out much from our bag of tricks & counters. This is a good thing, showing that our boys are executing the basic scheme very well. However, our coaches need to make some better calls in situations... for example having Forcier in on a 3 and 6, and throwing a screen pass. How about running something that goes, I don't know, past the sticks. Indiana did it all game to us, why can't we do it too?

I also put the play of the defense on the ability of the coaches to put our guys into proper alignments defensively. We need to be strong against the run while not leaving our secondary out to dry and be torched. Tough combination, but something we need to figure out post-haste as we wait for our 8 freshman to age quickly.

Between how much we depend on him and how talented he is only an injury could run him down on his way to the Heisman.  I really believe that.  If we can win eight then he will take home the hardware, and I think we will.  Our defense will make enough plays.  And for the record, when Denard gets to the secondary I usually stand up and yell "GONE!" and signal touchdown.  I've only been wrong once, maybe twice, all year.  Go Blue!

I'm not trying to be a Pryor hype machine or anything here (because I hate him), but am I the only one who wonders how much better Pryor could be if he wasn't playing for Tressel? Sweater Vest really seems to hold him back with his play calls and Pryor, sometimes visibly, is frustrated by it. That also seems to impact the perception of him because we often just look at his numbers. Cam Newton is good, but I don't think he's up there with Pryor. At least not yet, anyway.

I'm no fan of Tressel, but I will say the guy is smart. That's why he holds Pryor back; because Pryor is not smart. He makes bad decisions throwing the ball, and his arm punt is not very accurate. This is backed up by his very so-so QB rating and is obvious if you watch him play.

I made the same comment to an Auburn friend this morning. I saw Auburn's first game live this year and Newton has potential to be really good. He floats long passes a bit, but once he has a year of experience, he will be much more dangerous in the passing game. I fully expect him to be second team All American beyond repeat first teamer Denard Robinson in 2011.

Denard will be in it for the long haul. A victory against MSU will almost certainly translate to another spectacular performance. I say that b/se if you take Denard out of the quation we probably don't have enough to beat MSU. But Denard is the great equalizer. His amazing talent is enough to keep us in it against almost any opponent...
