Those shorts SUCK! Why is it so difficult to just have the big block M on both sides???
Mike Lantry, 1972
The freshmen, new uniforms, and oh my god what in the hell
Today's basketball media day was perfectly described by another reporter as "not a newsmaking event*," which seems a tad ironic but that's Michigan athletics these days. You can tell the freshmen have already been coached not to say anything interesting, and I'm not even going to bother transcribing the player roundtables as a result. Just imagine the football pressers and replace "football" with "basketball" and you have a good idea of what you missed.
I will, however, post some highlights from John Beilein's press conference.
That about covers it. Here's a shoe:
*said unnamed reporter even preceded that with "as expected"; we're not bitter!

Honestly, why would this ever be a newsmaking event? Did past coaching staffs give us breaking news during media day?
I would love to be able to scan my fingerprint and go to the practice facility and play some ball.
Whoever says this has obviously never raised kids of their own. And should probably stay the hell away from parenthood.
This unnamed reporter has to be Kyle Meinke. He was such a cry baby after Hoke banned media from fall camp.
It wasn't. Also, Kyle is one of the more quality people I've met on this job.
Considering Kyle's job is to cover Michigan football (and that includes Fall Camp) he had every right to be critical of things. Especially when the BTN guys showed up and got instand access, or ESPN people too
He does not have every right to be critical. Just because it affects his job, doesn't mean he has the right to bitch about Hoke's decision. Hoke is not obligated to oblige to everyone who wants a piece of the university just because it's their job.
It's my job to sell things to hospitals. If a hospital decides it's not in their best interest to buy my thing, I don't have the right to call that decision into question just because I don't like it.
but I know it would catch fish in 120 FOW in August.
Those shoes are horrendous. Please please please please let this adidas nonsense end. Please please please. I remember when Nike was the boss and things looked dope not stupid.
Pro Combat say "hi". Time to face the facts, pal. Nike is the forerunner in all things shitty looking. Adidas just doesn't want to get left behind.
Now, do I prefer shitty looking Nike over shitty looking Adidas? Never really cared about branding so I guess as far as I'm concerned they can both suck it.
I'd be interested to see those shoes in a real maize, they could look really fresh. Shoes notwithstanding, I like the maize jersey the best (as usual). I would prefer to see maize for every home game, the white looks fairly bad, especially the shorts and shoes.
Spaceball One went so fast it went plaid.
Our basketball shoes and socks went so yellow they went green.
The shoes are a ploy to divert your attention from the stupid-looking warp speed effect on the side of the shorts.
I once could see, but now am blind
I do wonder if those are our game shoes and if so, why are they highlighter yellow and black as opposed to highlighter yellow and blue
Just imagine the football pressers and replace "football" with "basketball" and you have a good idea of what you missed.
So Heiko pissed off Bacari Alexander by asking about bubble screens?
Our biggest concern is the hideous color of our shoes.
Life is good.
I'm likely headed to Bolivia for what I'm about to say, but I can't help it. When I read this:
Nik Stauskas has "a natural ability to find the bottom of the basket...
I immediately thought that we had heard similar things about Vogrich, and how I thought we'd get a lot more out of him. Almost like "okay, we've heard this before".
While I understand where you're coming from, the difference is that Stauskas is a much more complete player than Vogrich and can do more than just shoot the three, as Beilein pointed out:
Nik Stauskas has "a natural ability to find the bottom of the basket," but what makes him a difficult guard is that he can also put the ball on the floor and drive to the rim. Also showing the ability to keep his head up and find the open man, and he's putting in effort on defense because he knows that's how he'll see the floor.
I don't think being hesitant about the hype of a player is grounds for deportation.
Yep, not even close, adidas.
Curious as to instances where we have busted out the alternate "Metallic Gold" color. Does anyone know if or when we have in any sport, particularly since 1996?
I'm just gonna cross my fingers and hope that Adidas is still in the process of finalizing our shoe combo and gave us a close placeholder to wear in the meantime.
Anyways this has to be the most excited I've ever been for a basketball season. Let's start it off by winning the Preseason NIT.
It's too bad they don't have the Maui Invitational shoes anymore. Those things were saweeeet.
But really? This Is MICHIGAN. Black shoes and black socks ONLY.
Thats the wrong color blue!!!!! I. Hate. Everything...
Take THAT potential MGoSponsor who said we don't post enough content per day!
I know I am gonna get crushed for saying this, and for posting a whole 4 times, but I have to. Stop making the uniforms about what you want and stop complaining. The players love it and that's all that matters. These things matter to recruits and if highlighter shoes mean better players, then I am all for it. Just accept what sports are evolving into because we can't change it.
No, they don't matter to recruits, OK? This is getting be the most seriously ridiculously overrated idea in all of sports. No recruit is going to say "I've got to go to THAT school so I can wear those SHOES!" Forget the relationship with the coaches, the education, the reputation for excellence, the girls, the cash mysteriously dropped off in the lockers, the track record of the coach in getting players to the league, all that stuff that schools sell to recruits. Maybe they do like them, but not one effing recruit is going to come to Michigan (or Kentucky or Duke or North Carolina or Kennesaw State) because of shoes.
I never said it was the only recruiting tool, it's just one of the many. My job puts me in a position to hear 17 and 18 year olds opinions. Too often its about that stuff. I don't agree, but it's true
I'm sure they talk about it, and probably even like it given that 17-year-olds don't care what they wear as long as it's new and flashy. But will it ever actually sway a decision? No. That won't make us a better team. Ultimately the point is publicity for the apparel company.
Does anybody else dislike the color fade on the shorts?
The shoes make us look like Baylor. The shorts make us look like a middle school.
(I like the jerseys, btw)
I want Herm's take on these shoes. He's going to crap his Depends!
I was too busy staring at our MOTHERFUCKING 6'11" CENTER!!! Offensive... rebounds... gaggahhghhsgghaaaahgh.....
no they aren't maize, or even yellow for that matter, but I think they look awesome. But related to what Beilein said in his presser, I'm excited for THJ this season. He definitely looks bigger than last year, and I expect him to lead this team to a great season.
Either give the word tremendlus a TM or a footnote to Hokes intro presser.
as the days when Penn State fans came to Ann Arbor wearing Appalachian State shirts only to lose at the hands of a Freshmen QB.
Every Big Ten student section will ridicule these shoes and will go home with a sad.
Count the maizes! I think I got five, maybe six distinct shades.
And Trey Burke has blinding speed to the hole. And shoes, too.
then I'm good with it.
[Rose] got Adidas to build a special “Chicago Fire Department” makeup of his Adidas Rose 3...it features the black and neon yellow color worn by the CFD everyday. It has synthetic leather on the upper. And, on the left sneaker, it has the CFD logo on the inside of the tongue. D-Rose is most definitely riding for his city with these and showing a lot of love to the men and women who help protect it.
I bet we'll all like them if they are wearing them in the Final Four.
From what I heard, Brandon is planning on installing a new offense and these shoes will help. If the game is ever close, he is going to turn the lights off and the Michigan players will still be able to tell where their team mates are and have an easy time scoring. The ball and hoop will also be a part of the plan, but you will not see that until the lights are turned off. (Not shown in a picture. It would give away the suprise)
Personally I like the shoes. If the lights go out in the arena the players can still see each other and will have a big advantage in the game.....
Shoe terribleness aside has anyone mentioned how GRIII looks in that pic? That kid looks solid. With health he should be a real good one. Hope he stays a couple years.
I don't know, I kind of like them. They're starting to grow on me.....
They're $180. Pretty huge price. Was thinking about getting a pair but I'm not sure I can right now.
I know you probably hate me (I think I recognize the avatar as someone who sahtes me, if not apologies), but I used to work for a shoe company that makes similar shoes. The margins on shoes these days are INSANE. What you have there is a BOM around $24. That includes labor AND transportation cost. I truly don't understand how shoe companies aren't bulindg towers right next to the banks in every city around the world. The materials aren't even very good anymore. I mean, you know what lasts forever? Leather. You know what doesn't last forever? Air foam.
