Who would Harbaugh Draft from Michigan in 2024?

Considering Chargers current roster and the players from Michigan who have entered the NFL draft, who do you think Harbaugh would draft? None? One impact player? Or multiple?

Some needs on the Chargers roster (based on sites) would include cornerbacks, tight ends, running backs, offensive tackles, linebackers, and defensive ends.

I was thinking about this this morning actually.  He has Herbert, but Herbert has a ridiculous contract and, while ultra talented, hasn't won $hit and may be more hype than substance.  And, as they commonly say in the NFL, there is nothing better to have than a quality QB on a rookie deal.  With that in mind, my dream scenario:

  • Trade Herbert for a bunch of draft capital
  • Use the #5 pick to grab MHj, Nabors or Odunze
  • Use a second 1st round pick acquired via maneuvering to draft JJ
  • Profit

In my head this all makes sense.

And they have ~$65MM in cap space tied up between just Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, both of whom are UFAs the following year.

If Jim likes what he sees in his meetings with MHjr that's the pick.  Unless he straight up looooves the ND OT.

If he could pull off a Jimmy Johnson-style trade down for draft capital, I'm sure he would.

Harbaugh will not build the future of his team on skill players.

Expect a bunch of OL and DL in his first draft there, or at least trading for established OL and DL.

They have their QB - Herbert is a top 5 NFL talent with protection and a decent running game.

Harbaugh will do what he has done everywhere - build from the inside-out, get the team good by being great in the trenches, not putting too much pressure on his QB to be a world beater, and then hoping to get them over the top with a few elite skill position players.

That's the formula that has worked for him in the past.

What if the Chargers traded Justin Herbert for a 1st Round pick and he drafts JJ with one of the two 1st round picks he has? Could grab other needs like Barner or Zinter as well. Not sure how many late round picks they have.  I could see this working out ina similar fashion to what the Lions did with Stafford.

If you play fantasy football,  you're going to want whoever ends up starting at running back for the Chargers. Harbaugh loves to impose will and cram it down your throat when inside the 5 yd line. Idk if it will end up being Ekeler.

Is Harbs picking the GM?

If so Chargers will be going total opposite world from what they've always done.  Maybe it's not the worst idea since none of the others have ever worked.

Hollywood will have to make another movie to follow up Draft Day & Moneyball.  Where the HC & GM wanted to stab each other in the throat.  Harbs is gonna be in the right town for it.

An easier question might be - which Michigan player wouldn't he draft?

I could see players who enter the draft - but, don't actually get drafted - becoming UDFA's for LA - and, at a minimum - part of the practice squad.

The homerism with regards to the NFL on this board is staggering. Herbert is a guy any NFL team would want to build around, he's not getting moved. JJ may be good in the NFL or not - I really hope he's great but it would be a very bad choice for Harbaugh to chose JJ over Herbert right now and it will not happen.

Agreed.

I don't think JJ is ready to be a starting QB in the NFL. He would very much benefit from a situation like Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, and Love had where he can sit for 1-3 years behind an established starter and learn the speed of the NFL game. If he comes in and starts year one in the wrong situation, it could easily turn into a ruined career.

I've been trying to think of the best spots for McCarthy. Seattle has been suggested (sitting behind Geno or Lock). Some others I thought of: New Orleans (sit behind Derek Carr), Jets (sits behind Aaron for 1-2 years, might as well learn from one of the best), Denver (especially if they were to retain RWilson), Minnesota (especially if they retain Koupons for another year).

Of course, from a personal standpoint, I'd love to see the Pats take MHJ in round 1 and JJ in round 2 but just because I want JJ on my favorite team.

In related news, I saw a mock draft today that projects Zak Zinter going to the Lions in the 3rd at #93.

As both a Wolverine and a Lions fan: Yes, please.
