Maybe someone can find and link it, but there was a video posted of Kelly on the LSU Football tweeter earlier, but it was all footage from ND and quotes talking about ND; they just shopped it (badly) to put him in LSU colors.

Not only did they poach their coach, they stole their video too. ???

"The epitome of a winner."  LMAO.  Dude literally left ND and those kids in the lurch to chase $$$ instead of waiting a week to see if he had a chance to make them CFP winners.

How hilarious would it be if Kelly actually does take LSU to the CFP but before the first semifinal game, the team they're playing dangles a bag of cash for Kelly to switch sides and he does.

  • Authenticity is not that guy's strong suit.

That is an outstandingly efficient and accurate description.  Hats off Wendy. That is a highly entertaining video - definitely worth the watch. Thanks for sharing!

Brian Kelly turned up the charm as high as he could here, and he still appears to have a charisma quotient comparable to that of Ivan Drago.

Eh, I strongly suspect that as a human being, he is a royal ass, but he’s gotten Norte Dame to the playoffs twice and has a knack for finding good assistant coaches so he is doing at least something right from a tactical standpoint.  As far a cultural fit, he is willing to do almost anything to win, so that right there is prerequisite #1 for an SEC power.

He's an above-average coach that turned CEO a long time ago and he's much better at that. His actual single saving grace at this job is the fact that he has zero morals. None.

Take your average SEC HC sumbag and that guy is infinitely less of a sociopath than Brian Kelly. That could be what makes this thing work but even then I don't think it will.

Basically, Notre Dame is the only thing that kept him from going all-out from the jump. It would have been like Michigan hiring Urban Meyer at some point. They wouldn't have let him be Urban Meyer. He'd be a guy that wanted to do those things but literally couldn't. Dropping bags in the most obvious fashion? Nope. Transfers? Rarely. JUCO? Haha, think again. Kids with questionable grades and ethics? Depends on how badly they're needed so call it 'sometimes'. Etc. Same with Kelly at ND.

He's now free to be full-on, sociopath, no-holds-barred Brian Kelly. Is that good enough? Is that going to work at LSU? We'll see but he won't be playing the ND game down there. They're gonna try and use every option available and at a place like LSU that's a lot of shenanigans.

I've always found him to be the strangest fit - I mean honestly bizarre - for ND. I'm as protestant as they come and as much as I'd like to make jokes about Catholics, you'd think that a school like that who seems to take academics and morals seriously, would want someone who at least appears to make an effort in the spiritual department.

Dear Etude,

It's the religious / moral thing that surprised me most.

I didn't really pay close attention to Kelly or ND, other than fan-like dislike and annoyed that ND stays in the national conversation with 1-2 tough games a year.

However, I did assume that at a religious institution (one not based on hypocrisy), Kelly was a good fit, and a lifer because he fit so well. To discover that he's as phony and venal as we fan-ranted about, as phony and venal as ordinary SUC coaches surprises me.

Kelly is from the northeast so it wouldn't be surprising if he has some Catholic roots or at least familiarity with those circles.  Plus, although the Southeast as a whole is overwhelmingly Protestant, I would guess that Lousiana is a fair more Catholic than the rest of the region because of the French influence.

Like I said, I agree with you re: Kelly as a person, but if there's one skill he presumably honed at Notre Dame, it was recruiting kids from St. Ignatius-type Catholic high schools with good football programs and there's probably a fair amount of those in Louisiana.

Per Wikipedia, Kelly was raised Catholic, and attended Catholic schools.  But at ND he ended their tradition of pregame Mass, and also made his views on abortion (pro-choice) publicly known, which didn't go over well with a lot of their fans.

Louisiana is indeed more Catholic than a typical Southern state, as you noted, but LSU is a public school and Kelly's religiosity probably won't be a big issue.  Their main concern is winning games.

I'm not a fan of either ND or Brian Kelly, but this is just flat-out wrong.  ND almost always has one of the top10 most difficult football schedules and for many of the opponents, ND is their biggest rivalry game.  So no, SOS is not the reason ND has had a tradition of winning.

I am in the same boat here.  But the guy is 60 years old.  He's probably thinking 4 or 5 years, make the money, probably flame out and get fired or likely force LSU to push him out so he can get the huge money buy out.  And then bank $50-$70 million (minus taxes) in the process.  Then go live out life in a sprawling villa on ocean front property somewhere nice and warm.  Exactly how a condescending, arrogant and self centered douche bag would do it.

Brian Kelly does not care about Louisiana State University.  Brian Kelly cares about what LSU will give him.  And he cares about Brian Kelly.  I have no idea how he was able to pull in the high profile recruits that he did at ND.  Crazy how these kids were not able to see right through that fake outer layer.

I have the same feeling. He's a good coach and the fact that LSU won't hold him back at all makes it very possible that he will succeed--make the CFP (even while it remains at 4 teams)--and win a game once he gets there. But he's off to a bad karma start--left his ND squad in the lurch despite being on the fringe of the playoff discussion for this season, broke up with his team (and coaches?) via text, and met with them in person the next morning in only a perfunctory manner so that he checked the box of having done so. And now he's adopting a faux southern accent to ingratiate himself with the LSU fans? Beware the force Coach!

Well, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Brian Kelly's original dream profession was politician. As someone once famously said, you've got to be a real lowlife piece of shit to get involved in politics.

Here's the funny part though - his act entirely works with that crowd. Not that it's a major accomplishment. It is the land of TV preachers and snake oil salesmen after all. If they want to believe something, those folks down there are pretty good at throwing all skepticism over board, and boy do they want to believe Kelly will do great there.

Of course, all it needs is 3 losses in year one and half of them will think he's the devil incarnate.

Anyone else think this is just a terrible fit? Kelly and LSU?

Seems destined to fail imo.

On a separate note: He's such a douche. Why can't some people see that?
