OT-ish: PSU loses three 4 star commits in one week

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on June 13th, 2019 at 3:03 PM

Not sure what's going on at Happy Valley, but PSU has lost three 4-star players in one week. The first one was OT Grant Toutant who flipped to OSU. Then another OT Aaryn Parks de-committed. Finally, today PSU lost CB Josh Moten (who is a teammate of Parks). Seems like recruits aren't happy with Franklin. I also didn't realize that PSU has the same no visit policy that Hoke had.

honest question: what is going on at Penn St?  The 3 decommits in one week happens. It's unusual, but not that weird.  But having nearly 25% of the players in your program in the transfer portal?  Something is not right there...

There is a huge difference between having 22 in the portal and having 14. 14 may or may not be high.  With the portal era still being new, 14 could be the new normal, especially when many of those are grad transfers who have already been replaced by a more talented younger player.  There is no way 22 is the new normal, that's incredibly high.

I actually spent a full-day off-line yesterday!  Up at Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Lake.  But back in Denver today.  (no idea if anyone will actually see this post now)

Anyway, one thing I've noticed.  The 2012 & 2013 PSU teams (Bill O'Brien) seemed to really like each other and had good chemistry.  The 2014 & 2015 PSU teams (James Franklin) were the complete opposite.  The 2016 & 2017 PSU teams changed yet again in this regard - strong leadership and chemistry.  And then 2018 went back the other way.

I'd argue too: the 2012, 2013 & 2016 teams over-achieved as a whole.  The 2014, 2015 & 2018 teams under-achieved.  So there is correlation there.

Look at PSU's big losses in Ann Arbor in both 2016 & 2018.  There was a distinct difference between the games.  PSU kept competing and had effort and energy in 2016: they were just out-manned and things snow-balled a bit.  But that happens, they didn't quit.  PSU did quit in the 2nd half last year.

The O'Brien teams make sense: that was when the program had the off-the-field noise around it and the players/coaches looked internally and to each other for strength and stability.  The Franklin teams make less sense: they have been VERY hit-or-miss and suggests success is highly personality-driven.

Franklin and the team don't seem to have their "mojo" these days.  Now, that can change pretty quickly in college, of course, when a team turns over 25% every year.  But I do think the # of transfers is related to players picking up on that.

The no-visit policy has always been a dumb idea, IMO.  Even when Hoke did it.

If I were a mid-grade recruit, I'd want to:  a) Secure my place at a good school but b) continue to shop around.  I mean, it's in my best interest, right?

What schools with this policy are saying is we don't care about you (the player's) best interest.  We just care about what's easier for us.  If you were a recruit, why would this message be anything other than a negative point against that school in your mind?

This isn't a new policy. I think Lloyd Carr had the same policy. If you are a "mid level" recruit, whatever your definition of that is, you might want to stick with the school that gave you a scholarship. I could see high level recruits holding a place and shopping around, but a mid level guy might end up at a mid level school if he pisses off his really good offer.

Yeah, but the "mid level" guys are the ones that will get dropped late in the cycle if a bigger fish comes along, and then they have to scramble to find a home.

I understand that coaches want to get players locked up and keep them from being poached, but it is almost more beneficial in the long run to encourage recruits to take all of their visits to be sure of their decision.

Don't know why all the croots are leaving, Didn't they hear James "Frames" Franklin is the best coach in the big ten.

So when will the healing begin, Franklin?

But in all seriousness, Penn State may take another step back next year. They’ve still got some really talented individual pieces like Micah Parsons and KJ Hamler, but it could be an 8-4 type of season in State College next year.

A little bit of glass house for us to criticize. Michigan has had more players leave the program this offseason then Penn State. 5th most in all of college football.

Theres probably a post on the PSU board that says “What’s up with Michigan”
