Kugler: Hudson standing out

Submitted by yossarians tree on

Aside from QB, offensive tackle--and especially left tackle--is the biggest question mark heading into next season. The Grant Newsom recovery plan remains to be played out, but it's been my hope that the coaches have a plan for James Hudson, the freshman who moved to offense in fall camp. Here's an impression from bowl practices from center Patrick Kugler:

Might be more informative if you include 'James' in the title so people aren't expecting an article on Khaleke.

Does anyone know whether he projects to tackle or guard? The article says 'versatile' about ten times, but it's hard to tell if they are implying versatility from defense to offense, or multiple positions on the OL.

The "no responsibility" thing is a reference to a game announcer - I forget who - that claimed the Viper position had no assignments nor responsibility, and was free to do whatever he wanted. This statement instantly became top 5 "stupidest football statement ever". Hell, even "follow the fullback" makes sense...

I am being a DB, of course, but I always found these kinds of quotes silly. "You know who looks great and is working hard and really deserves playing time? The guy I share an apartment with. Yeah, that guy. And this comes from my own cold, hard reason and logic, not the fact he gave me a case of beer yesterday!"

It's that time of year again....
the football season's over
temperatures drop
the first snow fall
Christmas shopping
and "they say" practice reports about young up&comers who are tearing it up.

Sorta brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?

My irrational, unfounded hope for the offseason is that by the time the 2018 season kicks off, Greg Frey will have molded James Hudson and Andrew Stueber into a pair of outstanding offensive tackles.  I mean, I actually believe this will happen--I just have no articulable basis for that belief.  And practice hype is not reliable, so I still don't.  (But it's totally gonna happen.)

I think Stueber will be the starting LT next year and will be fine. Then he will be very good in the following years. Hudson could be your RT next year but it's hard to bet on a kid you haven't seen in a game to beat out an incumbent. I still think RT will be JBB next year, until we see differently in the Spring Game or see someone else take the field next fall.

NPF could be a factor at a tackle spot in fall camp too.

My hunch is with Runyan at RT.  Harbaugh went with JBB this year when he decided we would run it 60+% of the time and pass only when necessary.  JBB showed as a strong run blocker with issues in pass protection.  I see Runyan as average at both run and pass blocking.  I think next year we'll have a more balanced offense that will prefer consistently ok to strong run blocking and inconsistent pass blocking.

I see Runyan starting and being consistently ok as the floor at RT.  Maybe JBB will improve at pass blocking and hold down the job or maybe two from Hudson, Stueber, Honigford and Spanellis (tackle or guard?) will step up and take the LT and RT jobs.  Will be interesting to watch it unfold.

Where does this certainty come from?  Spelling his name incorrectly doesn't help credibility.

I've a feeling this is all circular: this blog predicted he'd start at RT this year, based on (I think) Lorenz and other insiders saying the coaches loved him.  I think people heard that and are running with it and yelling it even louder.

We haven't heard anything about him since Fall camp began.  Nothing that would suggest he'll start at LT.  All I saw in videos was a thin-looking kid who's butt was too small.  I'm sure he's been working all year and he'll be good one day, but is there anything else to back this claim?

Another kernel of evidence that suggests that Hudson might be ready to start and be competent at tackle next year.

It's not a sure thing, of course, but this is part two of a trickle of things being said about Hudson that is promising.

The hope: That he is Onwenu-level competent at a tackle spot next year.

The ole "player X is really standing out" stories. I'll never forget the Mark Donnal hype in practice when he redshirted.
