This article provides a lot more color and detail than the press release in December. Gil Brandt comes of as a real prick in the article, seriously fuck him.

Wasn’t there a professor/program at Michigan that was a big deal in the Hand recruitment that was focused on Sports Marketing/Management?

It makes for a real nice recruiting pitch when a kid chooses Michigan for the academics and it actually benefits them. Really rooting for the success of his agency.

Can someone pin this.

Especially if it’s Partridge, I’d really want to have Mattison’s experience there to lean on.

Edit: I guess Todd Day felt the same way.

01/06/2019 - 11:35pm Brown and Mattison being…

Brown and Mattison being gone would be scary.  I’ve come to peace if Brown leaves in part because Mattison was here and could really help the transition to the next DC.

To coach LB’s?  I think Bush would be the move if it’s internal.

01/05/2019 - 11:57am There’s a difference between…

There’s a difference between being critical and being a trolling, whiny bitch. There’s been plenty of fair criticism of the program in this blog and many other outlets but when you need to sound like a Valenti caller and use words like unacceptable you lose me. I don’t care about your feelings.

01/03/2019 - 10:23am Eh. There is budget. Sure…

Eh. There is budget. Sure they’d make it work but eventually the money matters. Maybe it comes from your analysts or from raises but that contract is why Pep is still employed, not loyalty. Jim is one the least loyal coaches there is.

01/02/2019 - 2:55pm I don’t think the Pep thing…

I don’t think the Pep thing is about loyalty but about $$. There’s like 3 million left on his contract. If they can slide out of that without having to fire him it makes a big difference in what they can offer the next guy.

Manny Díaz, 5 years ago, was such a bad DC he was replaced by GERG and the defense got better.

Exactly. Or we can sit around flip out about shit we can’t control.

12/28/2018 - 10:33am Buckeyes didn’t miss the…

Buckeyes didn’t miss the playoffs because of when they lost, it was how they lost. They got blown out by a mediocre Purdue team. A loss to the Buckeyes is always hard to recover from because you probably lose the B1G East in the process. If they had beat ND this year and the Buckeyes lost to Maryland, and the Game was a close game and Michigan goes on to beat Northwestern, Michigan would have made the playoffs.

12/27/2018 - 9:59am Non-commitable scholarship…

Non-commitable scholarship offer is so silly. It’s just something for the kid to tweet. Those numbers have no meaning. If I give you a cookie but you can’t eat it and ultimately I’ll probably give the cookie to someone else, did I really give you a cookie?

12/25/2018 - 9:31pm Another example of Michigan…

Another example of Michigan targeting small twitchy athletes on the offensive side of the ball. I truly believe this is intentional and different than the way Harbaugh had been recruiting.  I think he’s interested in at least incorporating some of what they are doing in places like KC and New England, Air Raid etc, and even what the Buckeyes did this year.

I also think that this was what Jim is looking for with the McDaniels hire.

12/24/2018 - 10:02pm You think ESPN wouldn’t be…

You think ESPN wouldn’t be elated to have ND in the finals?

12/21/2018 - 1:35pm I know enough people …

I know enough people (transfers mostly because they don’t care about test scores) who weren’t particularly bright and did just fine at Michigan. You can make Michigan pretty easy if you want to, you can also make most any school really hard. Calc 2 isn’t going to be that much different at Michigan than Tennessee, and most kids at both schools aren’t taking it.

If the kid is working hard and showing up he belongs. No he probably won’t challenge himself with academically but he is challenging himself with a very high level of football.

12/21/2018 - 12:58pm Smart was 8-5 in his first…

Smart was 8-5 in his first season Pruitt was 5-7.  Athens is nicer, UGA is much better school, and Georgia has a ton more HS talent than Tennessee. UGA recruiting really wasn’t that weird Tennessee’s class is.

12/21/2018 - 12:43pm He may be re-thinking some…

He may be re-thinking some of those comments with the way he talked about turning down Marshawn Lynch.

12/21/2018 - 12:41pm You are splitting hairs. Ed…

You are splitting hairs. Ed Martin wasn’t regularly going to Iowa games with AD tickets. He didn’t stay at the Iowa hotel on the road. Michigan/Fisher allowed and even encouraged a relationship between the program and Ed Martin for the benefit of strengthening recruiting relationships. It is the exact same thing as Les Miles allowing a booster to give Jai Eugene’s dad a job and get his mom a house.

12/19/2018 - 8:36pm He didn’t close this year…

He didn’t close this year but it seems Al Washington did a great job as well. Losing Wheatley and the transition from Tony T. to Dudek really hurt the 2018 class. Glad they have righted the ship.

12/18/2018 - 7:13pm That’s helps my point, the…

That’s helps my point, the only year he was any good at State was the year he had a really talented team.  They were about a .500 team at the end of the Perles era and he continued that for the next four years.  He knew LSU was a much easier place to win/recruit and that’s why he jumped ship on a 10-2 Spartan team.  He was smart in that way, he knew talent was more important than scheme.  But if he goes back to the NFL I think he will get similar results as the last time.

12/18/2018 - 6:55pm Certainly could be part of…

Certainly could be part of it as he was unable to achieve the same level at MSU and left because he knew he was always going to be second fiddle to Michigan.  I’m sure the success of talent procurement was a mix of many factors including looseness with rules, talent evaluation, salesmanship, proximity to talent, rabid fan bases, winning, NFL success etc.

12/18/2018 - 6:29pm In his 20+ years of coaching…

In his 20+ years of coaching how many games has he won that he didn’t have superior talent? It’s the Phil Jackson argument. He’s probably the best recruiter in history. But given equal or less talent (Miami, MSU) he has been a pretty average coach.

12/15/2018 - 11:38pm The interim-coach was his DC…

The interim-coach was his DC.

12/15/2018 - 7:18pm Pay them.

Pay them.

The higher Gary goes the easier it will be to recruit the next Gary. He’s always been a good guy and a good ambassador for the program. It will be fun to watch and root for his success on the next level.

12/07/2018 - 9:16am None of Iggy’s deficiencies…

None of Iggy’s deficiencies are really helped by coming back.  As we saw with GRIII when you come back and don’t get much better your stock can actually slip. Even if he’s projected to go in the 2nd I could see him leaving.

12/05/2018 - 11:53am On any given night +/-  is…

On any given night +/-  is heavily luck driven.  Pardon was 9/10 for 20 and plenty of that was on Teske (which Brian should have to eat at least half a lemon for).  To just hand wave this as Davis and a poor 3 point shooting night I think is a mistake. Our guards had real problems with their backcourt length and 25% from 3 isn’t bad when Simpson is attempting a third of those. That’s the shots they wanted Michigan to take.

12/04/2018 - 11:55am He absolutely should be…

He absolutely should be recruiting like he has a scholarship to give. I don’t see a reason why Teske doesn’t have chance to be selected in the back half of the first round this year, especially if he can hit 3’s.

12/04/2018 - 11:51am David Dejulius is really…

David Dejulius is really small, and probably needs a year in Camp Sanderson. Not only is he noticeably shorter than Simpson but he also looks 30 pounds lighter when I see him on the court.

If Carr would’ve hired Urban Meyer as his OC circa 2001.

12/02/2018 - 7:49pm The freshmen did as they are…

The freshmen did as they are apt to do. Perry seemed like the same guy maybe worse. I think he was fine coach but he’s known as a mediocre recruiter and probably wasn’t going to be very helpful in innovating the scheme.

New coaches are usually fun because you can imagine them fixing all the problems.

12/01/2018 - 2:20pm Still makes you sound dumb.

Still makes you sound dumb.

11/30/2018 - 5:49pm You listen to too much…

You listen to too much Valenti, Harbaugh is not Dantonio or Carr. He has a long history of adapting, pushing coaches out and not being satisfied.

Two years ago they were a bad spot from beating OSU and probably heading to the CFP. He wasn’t satisfied with the development of the OL and brought in Frey, that made things worse so he poached Wariner from the Gophers and pushed Drevno out the door.   Last year there was a dip recruiting and he went out and found 2 up and comers known for the recruiting. This year he has put an emphasis on finding really twitchy athletes headed for offense, Gray, Jackson, Sainistril, Johnson and Kent are  varying degrees undersized twitchy athletes. Although Gray seems headed to Tennessee the intent is still there.

Jim is studying what’s going on and clearly, is not satisfied with his offense.

11/28/2018 - 11:31am Maybe those guy sent…

Maybe those guy sent indicated they weren’t interested. Most elite level coordinators and even top position guys make more than MAC head coaches.

11/26/2018 - 3:55pm I don’t see how this defense…

I don’t see how this defense maintains its level if they lose Hill or Long, let alone both. Ambry couldn’t even see the field Saturday after Watson was clearly getting torched.

11/20/2018 - 7:35pm Wins are finite.

Wins are finite.

11/20/2018 - 11:17am Moorhead would come back,…

Moorhead would come back, MSU is a stepping stone job. A year is pretty quick but he’s from Pittsburgh and been a Midwest/East Coast guy his whole life. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was named after Paterno. If USC makes a nice offer to Franklin I could totally see this happening.  Get away from the yearly gauntlet of B1G East, sunshine and easy recruiting. I don’t think Penn State would try to hard to keep him either.

11/17/2018 - 10:59am This article source is that…

This article source is that Bleacher Report article from Matt Miller. The Patterson camp let everyone know last summer that they only intended to stay one year. I don’t think Miller knows anything new.  He’s just reporting what he heard in NFL circles.

11/17/2018 - 10:44am I don’t know if he said that…

I don’t know if he said that personally but those around him have certainly made it known that was their intention. It seems has really enjoyed his season under Harbaugh, and it seems like there’s more of a chance that he comes  back to develop further.  If Justin Herbert stays this could be a really weak QB draft, where Patterson with a nice finish could fly up draft boards. That may tip the scales to leaving, especially because the 2020 draft could be loaded with top end guys like Tua, Fromm, and Herbert.

11/13/2018 - 10:19am If you read the article the…

If you read the article the Grime’s came to him. He has a reputation that he will give them a platform to tell their story and not bury it because he or his employer require access to the program. That’s the way it works often in journalism, if you have the reputation the sources seek you out.

11/06/2018 - 7:18pm People get really touchy…

People get really touchy when a kid gets processed but maybe it's what's best for the kid. During his recruitment it was said the coaches basically stopped calling, they still gave him a scholarship. It seems it was clear to the coaches from his senior tapes he didn't develop like they thought he might and tried to cut bait. He can always say he played for Michigan and maybe that's what he wanted but to transfer after a season and a half it doesn't seem like he was happy with his decision.

11/04/2018 - 11:51am That was not his chest.

That was not his chest.

11/02/2018 - 1:46pm Vote?

11/01/2018 - 9:21am I don’t feel sorry for these…

I don’t feel sorry for these programs. You want respect and a seat at the big boy table? Schedule games against the big boys without holding them for ransom or a return dates. FSU was a mid-major till Bowden got there, then they went into places like Lincoln, Columbus, Ann Arbor and Baton Rogue and won. Year after year without return games.  Pitt and UNC don’t cut it.

10/29/2018 - 11:28am The notion that OSU is out…

The notion that OSU is out of it is plain silly. With the proximity and how many guys OSU puts in the NFL and Larry Johnson I won’t count them out till he’s on campus and enrolled.  Plenty of top commits take awhile to commit and still go to the obvious contender. DPJ just a couple of years ago took awhile, Will Campbell comes to mind. Going back a ways I really feel like LaVell Blanchard wanted to leave home but ended up staying after waiting late into the late signing period to do so.

He may have the feeling that he wants to branch out and leave Columbus but recruits don’t always do what they want to do. The pressure of family and community is tough, and OSU can show him a real path to success and track record of winning. I don’t think he knows what he’s going to do yet but if when it comes to that time OSU will be the easiest choice.

10/24/2018 - 12:19pm Michigan has never lost a…

Michigan has never lost a game Tarik Black has played in. Facts.

10/15/2018 - 2:04pm Shea has been struggled…

Shea has been struggled against zone, I know quarters is kind of hybrid but the blueprint is there to make him hesitant and smack him when he breaks the pocket. MSU has the ability to bottle the run game and make this a low scoring game.

I don’t expect a huge day from their offense but with I could see Lewerke extend drives with his legs and agressive 4th down calls and trick plays from Dantonio could capitalize on their opportunities in front of a juiced home crowd. It might be enough to win especially if the turnovers break the Spartans way.

10/14/2018 - 2:50pm Kicking is adventure for all…

Kicking is adventure for all but a tiny fraction of kickers, Michigan has had it’s share of solid ones when looked at through the lense of time. The NFL can’t even find 32 consistently good kickers.

10/10/2018 - 4:24pm I still think Drevno > Funk…

I still think Drevno > Funk. I think Drevno (Warriner as well) was promoted to his level of incompetence.
