|10/22/2018 - 12:38pm||He's got an injured shoulder…||
He's got an injured shoulder that he has been playing through for over a year. Give him the benefit of the doubt. I would assume that if he is healthy he will play. If he is not healthy, he won't.
|09/12/2018 - 5:12pm||I'm with you that I'd like…||
I'm with you that I'd like to see more of Hudson and Mayfield but be careful what you wish for. We may think it can't get worse, but it can.
It's also not a terrible idea to work someone who is inexperienced in slowly so they can have success and gain confidence vs. throwing them to the wolves before they're ready and have them lose confidence.
I hope Hudson and/or Mayfield will come in and be an upgrade at tackle, but we're still lacking data.
|09/11/2018 - 12:13pm||I agree with this. If…||
I agree with this. If Harbaugh's goal was to get Mayfield and/or Hudson ready to start instead of Runyan/JBB, he would have subbed them in with the first string OL in the second half of the WMU game. Clearly it was a higher priority to get the starting OL more reps together.
Not definitive, but it's a data point that indicates we may be seeing JBB and Runyan for a while. Maybe it will be different against SMU now that the first string OL has almost 2 full games together.
|09/11/2018 - 12:10pm||I don't disagree with the…||
I don't disagree with the concern, but if you had the stomach to re-watch last years OSU game you would see JBB blocking Bosa most of the game. He had a bust or two but generally did ok.
|08/18/2018 - 12:23pm||I agree he might end up at…||
I agree he might end up at LT like Mason Cole because he is the best tackle we have. This is probably the most likely outcome at this point. Ideally, you would have someone taller like Taylor Lewan, presumably to have longer arms to better deal with pass rushers on the QB blind side.
|08/18/2018 - 10:07am||I don't have any insider…||
I don't have any insider information, but my take from watching last year and reading lots of posts like is the following:
Runyan to date is the best, most consistent of the tackles, but he is 6'4" or 6' 5" and more of a RT
JBB is more experienced/consistent than the younger guys but lacks the athleticism of the younger guys (Hudson, Stueber, Mayfield). If season started today, JBB by my guess.
Hudson/Stueber have the size and athleticism to be better than JBB (and Runyan long term) but have not put together enough consistent play to pass JBB.
If Mayfield is anywhere close to the others after a couple weeks of camp, he could easily pass them with two more weeks of practice.
I wouldn't be surprised by any of the above being a starter. It will be Runyan and JBB against ND unless one of the young guys can get that consistency in the next 2 weeks which could easily happen. I will predict that one of Hudson/Stueber or Mayfield is starting by the end of the year.
|08/01/2018 - 2:56pm||I expect full submarine mode…||
I expect full submarine mode. I think Harbaugh believe's we've got something special coming, and he'll try to keep things under wraps. I think this is part of the reason there was no spring game (obviously dangerous looking weather was the other part).
|08/01/2018 - 8:56am||Harbaugh did say all of that…||
Harbaugh did say all of that. He said that after he talked about Patterson and Peters. To me, it's pretty clear the pecking order is Patterson-Peters-McCaffrey-Milton. Obviously, this could change a year from now as McCaffrey continues to learn the offense and possibly during fall camp, but I'll be surprised if this isn't the QB depth chart for 2018.
|07/28/2018 - 2:56pm||Wouldn't want anyone else. …||
Wouldn't want anyone else. Class guy. Has program geared for consistent top 10 teams for the foreseeable future.
Schedule is brutal this year. Will be a number of very, very good football games this year.
|02/23/2018 - 12:34pm||2-3 game suspensions.||
I'd predict 2-3 game suspensions for the big names that took under $1000 (Bridges) being served before the tournament starts. After the season, wins with ineligle players will be vacated.
Will be interesting to hear Izzo's explanation for why they bought Izzo lunch.
|02/21/2018 - 4:33pm||Roster is rebuilt.||
Agreed. Next year will be the start of a 10 year run of consistent top 10 teams. Harbaugh has rebuilt the roster, and we are positioned for consistent success. Peters/Patterson/McCaffrey and Hudson/Newsome/Steuber/Honigford/Runyan/Mayfield/Hayes will solidify the QB and tackle positions long term. Defense is well positioned for long term excellence.
Only question in my mind is does it start in 2018 or 2019. The 2018 schedule is brutal even for an experienced team, and we are still young on offense (defense too but that's ok).
Just got to make it through the summer. Come on spring game!
|02/17/2018 - 9:28pm||Drevno back to OL||
I’m happy with this, but mostly because Drevno is back to doing what he has done well, just coaching OL. If Drevno can pull the OL together as he has done elsewhere, I’m confident McElwain, Hamilton and Harbaugh can put together a good offense.
|02/14/2018 - 12:28pm||More MAAR.||
Put me down in the more MAAR camp. Good things happen when he has the ball. A significant bump in possessions with him initiating the offense seems like the best answer.
The most encouraging takeaway from the Wisconsin game was seeing more of this down the stretch. I think this will continue.
|02/13/2018 - 12:09pm||Filiaga?||
Do I take from this you are assuming Filiaga is a guard only and not an option at OT?
I was assuming he would get a shot with the other guys at RT given our current OL makeup.
|02/04/2018 - 2:07pm||Same conversation.||
Had the same conversation with my 10 year old who has decided to root against Tom Brady because of some kid at school and to be contrarian with the rest of the house. My wife tweaks her by randomly shouting, "Greatest of All Time".
Anyway, my response was, "Either the guy carrying a bag with a bunch of balls to the field stopped in the bathroom for less than 1 minute to use the bathroom or he stopped to amazingly deflate 10+ footballs to exactly the right pressure. You decide which answer seems more logical."
|01/13/2018 - 4:07pm||watch your profanity!!!!!!!||
watch your profanity!!!!!!!
|01/01/2018 - 12:00pm||Runyan||
Runyan at worst will be solid if unspectacular. Would be fine with him at RT next year
|12/12/2017 - 9:04pm||Runyan in OSU game.||
We played Runyan the last 2 drives of the OSU game which was an obvious passing situation. I haven't heard it discussed, but I'm assuming this was because Runyan is a better pass blocker.
|12/12/2017 - 1:15pm||Maybe Runyan?||
My hunch is with Runyan at RT. Harbaugh went with JBB this year when he decided we would run it 60+% of the time and pass only when necessary. JBB showed as a strong run blocker with issues in pass protection. I see Runyan as average at both run and pass blocking. I think next year we'll have a more balanced offense that will prefer consistently ok to strong run blocking and inconsistent pass blocking.
I see Runyan starting and being consistently ok as the floor at RT. Maybe JBB will improve at pass blocking and hold down the job or maybe two from Hudson, Stueber, Honigford and Spanellis (tackle or guard?) will step up and take the LT and RT jobs. Will be interesting to watch it unfold.
|12/05/2017 - 12:18pm||Runyan.||
My recollection on Runyan is he played for the last couple drives when they were going to pass just about all the time. I assume this is because Runyan is the better pass blocker but not as good of a run blocker.
|11/12/2017 - 3:39pm||Unlikely.||
Pretty sure it was Onwenu. If it was Dwumfour, he spent an abnormal amount of time around the other back-up OL.
|11/12/2017 - 2:14pm||Onwenu.||
I'm guessing that Onwenu is fine for Wisconsin. He was dressed and standing on the sideline and huddling near the field like the other back-ups against Maryland. I'll bet he could have played, but they decided to give him another week to heal up and give Ruiz another game of experience.
|11/06/2017 - 8:19pm||Feeling better about 2018.||
Watching Bushell-Beatty, Onwenu and Ruiz pushing people around is a good look ahead at what the line will look like going forward. If Spanellis continues to progress, I think he will be hard to keep on the bench with his size. I see an interior of Spanellis-Ruiz-Onwenu. With these three and Runyan, Bredeson will be a tackle unless others step up big time. Here's what I see:
LT: Bredeson or Newsome if healthy. Bredeson will be steady if not spectacular with some struggles against top flight DEs (maybe Hudson/Stueber).
LG: Spanellis or Runyan, maybe Filiaga (Bredeson only if Newsome/JBB can man the tackles)
C: Ruiz or Runyan (Runyan first back-up at both Gs, C and RT
RT: JBB or Bredeson if Newsome is LT (Hudson/Stueber will push)
I think JBB at RT will be ok by next year with he and Onwenu having a year's worth of experience. Pass rush issues will exist on occasion but defense respecting the run will lessen the issue.
|09/17/2017 - 10:57am||Few things.||
No turnovers from Speight. DPJ getting involved in the offense and making a couple plays plus the punt return.
Also, Grant Perry continues to be always open. They also broke a handful of long runs and without a bungled who to block decision on a few other plays would have broken more.
|09/17/2017 - 9:48am||What young offense looks like.||
I'll admit I'm starting to get nervous about when the offense comes together, but this is probably a textbook example of what a talented, young team with a bunch of new starters looks like. Some big plays but an inconsistent offense that bogs down in the red zone when more precision is required.
I re-watch the plays that don't work and typically see either a blown block or a blocker run right past someone along with the inaccurate throws here and there. Many of these plays look like big gainers if 1 player doesn't make the mistake.
I think this offense will go once the players get more experience and stop making mistakes and Speight's timing improves with all the new receivers (overthrows will reduce but not go away). The big question is when does this happen. Hopefully within the next 2-3 games.
|07/30/2017 - 2:24pm||Thought Runyan looked good in the spring game.||
I think the op did a good job of summarizing the good and bad of JBB with a bit of a positive lean. My only disagreement is the statement that Runyan was not very good at all in the spring game. I thought overall Runyan played just fine in the spring game. He did get beat once or twice by a speed rusher but held his own on the rest of the plays.
To me, there are two options we have seen play at RT so far, Runyan in the spring game and JBB last year. Having watched both, I have much more confidence in Runyan due to the spring game than what I saw of JBB last year. On JBBs side, if he learns from his mistakes and improves a lot from last year (not unlikely), he does have more upside than Runyan based on his size.
I expect to see Runyan start and do just fine against Florida, but it would not be shocking for JBB to start.
|07/15/2017 - 5:09pm||Two deep but few meaningful snaps.||
I think the safety positions will be similar to last year in terms of rotation. Kinnel was about the only bench guy to play snaps that mattered until Metellus in the Orange Bowl. I think Brown will get all the snaps he can for Kinnel, Metellus, Glasgow and Hudson. The 4 of them will get virtually all the important snaps at safety + viper (Furbush at SLB too). A freshman or two will get the garbage snaps and would have to fill in if there was an injury.
I think all of Kinnel, Metellus, Glasgow and Hudson will all be very good. Hudson will make some mistakes with his first extensive playing time, but his athleticism will recover quickly and make plays as well.
|07/14/2017 - 2:21pm||Love it.||
I've been watching evaluations of Hudson with great interest for a while. From the highlight film, he looks like someone (along with Solomon) who could potentially play some back-up DT snaps this year and not be a liability.
Since his rankings didn't really show the same thing, it's been interesting to see what other's think of Hudson. Brian's review certainly doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for Hudson and Solomon being exciting long term replacements once Hurst and then Mone depart.
|07/11/2017 - 11:37am||Better now.||
I enjoy it now that Michigan's teams are better. My recollection of the first couple years was that the top 10 would be just about all OSU players with rare U-M players even in the top 20. That was not much fun too read.
Now that Michigan has improved, they are more interesting.
|06/03/2017 - 8:57am||Little disappointed.||
I'm a little disappointed to see Mason only at FB. I am in full agreement he seems to be just what you want at FB, but I thought he looked pretty darn good at LB. I could see him as a perfectly reasonable starting MLB in a year or two. Given the LBs we brought in, maybe they beat him out but give the kid a chance.
I'm hoping he's a full time FB in the fall to learn the position and Harbaugh lets him rep at both longer term.
|05/25/2017 - 9:18pm||True.||
That's true, but is Duncan Robinson a better answer? Of Robinson, Wagner and Matthews, the best option might be Matthews. I do think Wagner would give either of them fits in the post.
I do agree getting a transfer more naturally suited for the 4 is the best option.
|05/25/2017 - 7:35pm||Wagner/Matthews at the 4.||
I agree with the others about Wagner spending time at power forward. I also think Matthews will spend time at the 4 in certain cituations. The beauty of it is that Wagner is best suited to play the 4 against bigger slower players while Matthews is better suited against smaller faster players. Seems like a good combination. It may be a problem going against scorers that are somewhere in the middle, but smaller, quicker players are going to be in trouble guarding Wagner in the post.
|05/20/2017 - 4:49pm||Line set other than RT.||
Cole-Bredeson-Kugler-Onwenu is set barring an amazing push by Ruiz. Based on JBB's play last year and Runyan's in the spring game, I think Runyan will be the RT. He looks ok but not great while JBB looked like he wasn't ready last year. Maybe JBB has stepped up since then.
Cole and Bredeson should be good players. Beyond them, I think Kugler, Onwenu, Runyan, Ruiz and Vastardis all look like guys who can play and not be a detriment, JBB hopefully is also at that level by now as well. Because of this, I don't see any freshmen other than Ruiz playing unless they are amazing.
I'll go with:
Evans, Higdon, Omaury-Samuels, Isaac, Walker at RB. I think Evans and Higdon will get most of the carries and be explosive.
|05/04/2017 - 9:24am||Kemp at WDE?||
Seems to me that Kemp is pretty suited to be the back-up to Winovich at WDE. He doesn't bring pass rush upside of Winovich, but give Winovich some plays off on more likely rushing downs. Kemp plus some of Vilain on pure passing down, and we should be fine.
If Winovich got hurt that would be bad, but Kemp backed up by Vilain probably isnt' terrible.
|04/18/2017 - 9:23pm||Dwumfour, Solomon, Hudson.||
I think Dwumfour, Solomon and Hudson with a sprinkling of Gary will be fine if noone gets hurt. I wouldn't be happy expecting these guys to start, but this is our biggest worry I will sleep soundly.
If we were desparate, I also wouldn't mind seeing Onwenu play a few snaps of D on the odd long drive. Wouldn't make sense except when the D was tired because the offense hadn't been on the field much. Unusual, but Harbaugh just might do it.
|04/12/2017 - 7:48pm||Like this logic.||
I like this logic. I thought he'd back-up all 3 LB positions, but I guess with McCray, Bush and Wroblewski maybe it's not needed.
Furbush did play a bunch of snaps at SAM against FSU with Peppers out, so he may play more if Khaleke is substituted for more than Peppers was. I thought Furbush looked pretty good when he did play. Given the lack of experienced starters, I'm convinced he'll see significant snaps somewhere.
|04/12/2017 - 1:06pm||Kemp at WDE?||
I don't see why Kemp can't play back-up snaps at WDE. Seems the right size and a good complement for Winovich on more run-oriented plays. It's likely Gary plays quite a bit, so I'd imagine he could play back-up snaps on both sides. Makes sense in spring to focus on getting good at one position first.
|04/12/2017 - 1:03pm||2013 OSU game.||
My recollection is that Gedeon started and played the majority of the 2013 OSU game. I don't think those are meaningless snaps.
I'd love to have him back this year, but we needed him in 2013. Without him, we had no back-up LBs.
|04/08/2017 - 7:53pm||JBB improved?||
Has JBB gotten better since last year or do you see him starting because there is noone else? He got by without hurting us but seems there was a reason he was replaced by Bredeson with Braden moving to LT.
It wouldn't be surprising to see him improve after getting some game time last year. Obviously it would be huge if he can hack it as a starter.
|03/28/2017 - 6:34pm||Kugler at center.||
I'm confused by the comments about Ruiz at center in the early glimpse. The mgoblue videos I have seen show Kugler at center in all shots but 1 or 2 (Cole in these) with a plausible Cole-Bredeson-Kugler-Onwenu-(Not in video/JBB) first string. I'm buying this until someone says differently.
I've shifted into the Cole at LT camp and like the line above. Bredeson at RT replaced at guard by Ruiz or Runyan would be good too.
|03/13/2017 - 11:42am||Already did.||
I thought this thread yesterday fit the bill in terms of apologies.
|03/08/2017 - 10:11am||Live in DC area.||
I am one of a number of DC area Michigan fans very happy to have the BTT local, and I will be there. They shouldn't do it that often, but I like the idea of having the tournament at a different location every 5 years or so. It gives fans in different areas an opportunity to go. Indianapolis isn't very convenient for Maryland, PSU and Rutgers fans.
|03/05/2017 - 2:19pm||5th year for Furbush||
I have liked what have seen so far from Furbush. Given our LB depth, I expect him to play a lot this year (inside and outside) and be back for a 5th year in 2018.
|02/23/2017 - 9:05pm||Not worried for 2017.||
I shared your concern until we signed Solomon. I think Dwumfour (solid but not playmaking), Solomon and Hudson is just fine as back-up DTs. Plus, Gary can slide inside here and there, particularly on passing downs. We should be able to find some decent SDE snaps among Ron Johnson, Marshall, Kemp, Jeter, Irving-Bey and Hudson to give Gary an occasional rest. I do see Gary getting a lot of snaps.
If our young but talented secondary can get the job done, we could have a very good defense.
|02/14/2017 - 1:44pm||Glasgow 4th?||
Was that the younger Glasgow in 4th? I don't think he would have made anyone's Top 10. Good for him. Probably not top 40 time, but I'm impressed.
|01/10/2017 - 12:16pm||Spot on.||
I agree with you on the most likely starters and Filiaga in consideration at RT but not at the front of the line. I believe Cole will be the center as Harbaugh wants his best player there and that is a natural position for Cole. I think Onwenu is a lock at RG (could be LG, I suppose). I believe Bredeson will be at tackle since we have no other obvious options, he started this year, and his 'Hello' post states he could play any position on the line. I agree Bredeson is most likely LT if Newsome is not ready.
Based on last year's performance, I don't buy JBB at LT, maybe RT and maybe guard, but I will be shocked if he is at LT. I think there is the most uncertainty over RT. Could be anyone listed below as well as Bredeson if he's not at LT.
LT - Bredeson/Newsome (I can hope), Ulizio
LG - Ruiz/Kugler
C - Cole
RG - Onwenu
RT - Ulizio, JBB, Filiaga, Spanellis/Hall/Stueber
|12/31/2016 - 8:59pm||Ruiz and Cole.||
Ruiz sure looks like he would be ready to play based on his film. I can see him moving into a starting guard role during the year as a freshman and then over to center in year 2. I think Harbaugh likes his best lineman at center ala Glasgow and Cole, and I think he'll put Cole at LT as a last resort only. However, I can see Cole being the LT anyway unless one of the freshmen or Ulizio are ready.
|12/31/2016 - 4:35pm||Furbush.||
I thought Furbush played quite a bit. Strangely, it looked to me like he came in on passing downs. It seemed like the nickel package was Furbush (maybe for a DL?). I think he'll play a lot next year, possibly at multiple LB positions, and do well. Coaches seem to trust him.
|12/31/2016 - 4:26pm||Safety.||
Hudson was at safety during pre-game warm-ups. Also noticed back-up OL from left to right was Dawson, Onwenu, Kugler, Runyan and Ulizio. JBB was the third string RT. Not sure how much this means.
|12/28/2016 - 4:13pm||McCray/Bush.||
Sounds like McCray and Bush will start in the middle/WLB spots that play every down as the top two LBs. I can see Furbush being both the SLB against MSU/Wisconsin and the back-up to McCray (MLB?) and maybe Bush. In this capacity, he could get almost as many snaps as McCray and Bush assuming he is good enough to play a lot.
