Michigan 65, Tarleton State 54 Comment Count

The best thing you can say about this game is that Michigan won. There was little else here to be happy about. Michigan led KenPom #205 Tarleton State, maybe the worst team on this season's schedule, by just three points with four minutes at home. If you got creeping NJIT vibes, I would not blame you. Michigan missed 17 field goals in the game. They committed 22 turnovers. The sloppiness from the Wolverines was worthy of an appearance on The Real Housewives. At some point during the game, your author felt no choice but to begin asking the difficult questions:

This basketball team is simply not very good right now despite the talent, and they need a lot of work from Juwan Howard and his staff to get to where they want to be. Luckily, Michigan now has seven days off to hit the gym (something they didn't get before this game, perhaps the only saving grace) before heading to Chapel Hill for a daunting road date with UNC. It's not pretty. At least this is only the beginning, not the end.

The first half was generally tight. Michigan saw some of the usual suspects pop up in big ways to keep Tarleton State in it, even as the Wolverines canned their shots at a high clip: faulty defensive rebounding, foul trouble from key players, and extraordinary turnover rates. Michigan shot 75% from the floor in the first half, yet led by single digits against an opponent who should have represented an easy victory. Why? 11 turnovers. If the Wolverines got a shot up, it was normally going in. They just didn't get nearly enough shots up. The turnovers came in all varieties, bad passes, offensive fouls, players stepping out of bounds as if they were unaware the sideline exists. Infuriating basketball littered with mistakes.

So why didn't we see more of Frankie in the second half? [MG Campredon]

There were some positive notes, though. After DeVante' Jones encountered foul trouble yet again following a horrific decision to pressure the ballcarrier at midcourt that did not pay off, Frankie Collins got to play the point. Jones exited only five minutes in, and Collins got the remaining 15 minutes in the half and played very well, going 2/2 from the field, knocking down a three and getting to the line. Only hitting one of his three free throws was the downer aspect of his performance but there were genuinely encouraging signs from Michigan's backup one. Similarly, Caleb Houstan may have played his best half as a Wolverine, scoring five points and hitting one of his two threes, seeming far more engaged in the game.

On the flip side, Michigan still couldn't enter the post to Dickinson consistently. The star big man attempted an unforgivable one(!) FG in the first half, despite logging 15 minutes. Defensive effort also came and went, and Tarleton State collected five offensive rebounds to Michigan's zero. That cannot happen against a team that Michigan is much bigger than. Eli Brooks and Moussa Diabate combined for 12 points while not missing a field goal, which helped Michigan to go up 31-22 at halftime. The home team outscored their opposition 10-2 in the final five minutes of the first half, though going scoreless in the final three of those minutes after an initial explosion loomed large.

That reasonably strong close to the first stanza seemed to set up a coherent narrative of Michigan settling in and starting to play like the vastly better team when the Maize & Blue came out of the half juiced up and on a 9-2 run. Three minutes into the second half, it was 40-24 Michigan and your author began to think he would be able to start writing early. Not so fast. Tarleton State answered with an 8-1 run of their own and were back in it. From there it became a tug-of-war, where Michigan would pull forward for a few points, before the Texans would pull back, keeping the center knot in the rope at a margin of roughly Michigan +10. It was with 8 minutes to go that the rope began to pull decisively towards the team in purple.

Eli represented the good and the bad tonight for Michigan [MG Campredon[

Montre Gipson made a turnaround jumper, Michigan turned it over, had Diabate miss the front end of a one-and-one, and then saw Eli Brooks brick an open three point look on their next three possessions, before Tahj Small and Gipson knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions for an 8-0 run. That suddenly made it 52-49 Michigan with 6:06 left. It was only some 30 seconds later that Michigan missed consecutive threes from Brooks and Houstan, again on open looks, and Michigan's offensive problems were running deep. A three from Daniel Shakur made it 55-52 Michigan with 4:20 to go and the idea of a previously-unthinkable loss became slightly more viable.

But, Michigan proved to have enough left in the tank. They held the Texans to a lone field goal in the final four minutes of play, while two Diabate dunks off of good passing plays from Dickinson, in addition to free throws from Brooks and Houstan, put the game out of reach for Tarleton state. The time drained off the clock and a Crisler Center crowd who seemed more fixated on the impending football game on Saturday gave their applause.

The final box score demonstrates the issues Michigan had in this game. The now well-described 22 turnovers stick out like a sore thumb, but some of the other numbers are just as alarming. Hunter Dickinson only attempting six total field goals is something that will need to change. DeVante' Jones playing the entire second half, despite never attempting a single shot of any kind and turning it over five times is ugly. Refusing to play Collins in that latter 20 minutes when Jones was giving you nothing offensively was the most befuddling decision Juwan Howard made tonight. Eli Brooks led the team with 15 points but went ice cold from distance in the second half and was responsible for five turnovers himself. Brandon Johns Jr. played 15 minutes that were generally ugly when he was visible.

Houstan was a bright spot tonight for Michigan [Campredon]

Diabate and Houstan were the two bright spots. The French big man provided his typical defense, in addition to 14 points that included him going perfect on his twos. Houstan, meanwhile, wasn't perfect on defense, but was more plugged in than in other games, and seeing the Canadian go 4/7 from the field and 2/5 from three for 14 points is a step in the right direction. Trying to find glimmers of hope here.

Michigan now will hit the gym for what should be some tough practices, if Howard and Phil Martelli want to whip this team into shape. After playing three games in five days, this week off will give them an opportunity to reset and get back to basics. This team should not need to get back basics six games into the season, but that's where we are. At the very least, Michigan is 4-2. It won't help their national image at all though.

Michigan's next game is at 9:15 PM EST on December 1st against North Carolina as part of the B1G-ACC Challenge. The box score is the only content after the jump.

I have two thoughts, neither of which excuse the turnovers, which would have lead to a blowout defeat against a more talented team.

1. Michigan had extraordinarily bad puck luck in this game

2.  I have never seen a game in which it was clearer that the refs decided to give the less talented team a friendlier whistle.  Tom Izzo would have assaulted a ref if they tried to call that Diabate tech or blocking foul on one of his players and I wouldn’t blame him

Well - It is even more funny.

Because He was trying to wake up a dead silent Crisler.
As a Freshman, He might have believed that Crisler was silent due to the poor way the game start...
As no one seemed to have told him that was pretty standard for Nov~Dec late game vs Non conference poor opponent.

When I saw the ref calling the tech I could tell it was "for attempting to stop the nap of the older people".

I would say to your two points:

1. Luck should have nothing to do with this game. Tenelton State is a team that starts five guards. There is no level of luck for them that should have contributed anything meaningful to this game.

2. Again, all the questionable whistles in the world should not have been able to keep this game close for Tenelton State.

This game was close because, at best Michigan tried to sleepwalk through it on their way to Thanksgiving dinner, but more likely because they are very disjointed offensively and defensively. They are giving too many minutes to the wrong guys and there are no repercussions to this point if players aren't playing with the level of intensity and execution that's required to win in the B1G. There are plenty of guys that will play their ass off with starter minutes if Jones, Johns and Houstan don't want to. They should be reminded of that.

I am getting SO fucking tired of Michigan fans whining about the refs, no matter what sport you're talking about. You don't always get the calls you want, if they were going our way would we listen to an opposing fanbase bitching about it? Of course not. I understand this is a fan forum and a place to vent, but it's not like the refs are out to get Michigan. This is fucking Tartleton State we're talking about here, and people are complaining about the refs?

Listen my man…in football and basketball, for whatever reason, Michigan gets at best an equally officiated game at home. On the road, you know they ain’t getting the same amount of calls. They don’t get extra calls or the key game changing calls. I could go back and talk about a ton of games. Beilein getting ejected for like the first time his career is a perfect example, that ref hates Michigan and calls horribly against us. I don’t even want to get started on the Ohio based officials in The Game in 2016 and what transpired there.
Let’s just say the refs shouldn’t matter against Tarlenton St. Michigan should have played way better and the game would’ve been out of reach. But unless you are one of the youth age sports officials or just a ref apologist, look at the game last night and see if every time they drove they got a foul called but any of our stuff in the paint was a good defense play on. With us playing so poorly it allowed for that comeback by them. We can agree that most of the time the refs aren’t out to get Michigan but I will disagree if you are one to say we get equal treatment to many other big name programs, especially on their home court or field. Last night seemed like refs trying to keep the game somewhat interesting and them still not assuming it would’ve gotten that close. Just my take on officiating.

This is one of the worst and discombobulated teams I have seen at Michigan since the early Beilein days. They desperately need a point guard to take charge of this offense. I am pretty sure they went several minutes tonight without Dickinson even touching the ball against players 5 inches shorter then him. That starts with a point guard getting the offense going and not turning the ball over. It was a frustrating watch and Juwan has his work cut out for him. This is not even close to a tournament team right now.

Collins needs be running the point and leave Jones at the two and let him score. He is not a point guard. He doesn’t play smart and is not a good ball handler or passer. Kind of essentials for a PG. Collins has another gear than most people on the court.
John’s is about to fold. His confidence, intelligence, and turnovers are hard to watch. Diabate needs to start. Maybe John’s can come off the bench like previous years.

Logged in to mostly agree.  Jones needs a very short leash if not starting Collins.  The only run that I can recall in the game where everyone was in sync had Collins at 1 and Diabate at 4.  I think they managed to go up 11 at one point, maybe more.

There is no more upside with Johns.  We've seen what he has and Diabate is already showing flashes of being much better.  Jones is just out of sync and costing the team dearly.  5:1 turnovers in the grad transfer vs true freshman.

Better to take the lumps now and learn how to play together with the young guys to be ready for a tournament run.  Right now Jones is a square peg in a round hole.

This was a rough game to watch, and it looked like Brooks tweaked his ankle in the second half and there went his shooting.  I will say a small amount of optimism can come from the fact that they played better on both ends with about 5 minutes to go.  All that said, this team looks like a talented one but Houstan is decidedly not a one-and-done talent and Jones is a massive TO machine right now to a degree I didn't expect.  I will say that this game felt not unlike Oakland last year when they had 20 TOs and went to OT despite dominating by most metrics.  They've struggled all year holding onto the ball but the optimist in me says this is still a team that shouldn't turn the ball over THIS much and a week prepping might help iron out the lineups and get some heads on straight.

Still, teams feels like one that'll be okay in conference but will struggle against teams that can defend Dickinson and Diabate because they don't have shooters AT ALL outside.  Houstan hitting a couple helps but he also had trouble on defense again and this team is going to need to see him shoot lights-out for that trade-off to work.

EDIT:  One final thing I'd add is that the last time a high-usage transfer from a smaller school showed up to be PG and struggled we got the emergence of Xavier Simpson (as a true SO but close enough) and they went to the title game, so #FreeFrankie isn't necessarily a bad idea.

Jones is a liability bringing the ball down the court. He can’t beat his defender 1-on-1 80 feet from the hoop. I would help him out by having Johns set a screen for him. The alternative is wasting 7-8 seconds of the shot clock just getting the ball past half court. If the refs were paying attention, Jones would pick up another 1-2 fouls per game pushing off.
I have to believe Johns is going through something that is taking his mind off of basketball. I’m not going to speculate, but he’s just unplayable right now. Being a fellow ELHS alum, I’m rooting for him. But he appears to be going through the motions while his head is 1000 miles away.

Could not agree more with this post. I don’t understand why Juwan wants Jones to crab dribble 47 feet instead of either blasting through a weaker defender or passing to the middle. This was a problem against Arizona too.

And then poor Brandon. He is clearly in his own head. Juwan should just put him in the dunker’s spot and instruct him to get 3 offensive fouls on offensive rebounds before he does any other damn thing. Gotta get him excited to play basketball again.

Tarleton figured out that all you have to is double our PG as soon as they cross half court so we pass it to the center above the circle 25 feet from the basket and then our offense is immediately lost.

If the last three games don't serve as a wake up call for this team then we are completely boned this season.  Second half against Seton Hall until now is by far the worst stretch of Michigan basketball that I have witnessed since early Beilein.  If Juwan turns this team back into a top 10 squad then he will have earned his salary and then some.

ugh... that was a win that felt kinda like a loss?

Just seemed like Michigan is too sloppy, not disciplined, too static... Just a lot of problems right now... Feels like Howard needs to bring back passing drills and basic skill drills...like catching rebounds securely instead of giving them back to the opposition for easy scores...

there were 2 or 3 TOs from stepping out of bounds?! that's really crazy too me... I don't want to be 'that' guy, but Jones' 2 early fouls were just bad, especially the second one - totally undisciplined.

Going to take a while to sort this out I'm afraid.

I'm still hopeful about Jones, and (to a lesser extent) Johns, and I think these are the kinds of games you give them opportunities to work out their problems. It's painful to watch, but benching them could really kill their confidence, and I think it's way too early to give up on them for the rest of the year. In fact, I'll say it: I like that Juwon shows confidence in his players, and I'm fine with them being in there. As for Jones, hell, if he fouls out, then he's on the bench the way people want anyway. What's the problem?

But it's shocking to me how bad Michigan is at getting the ball to Dickinson down low. And has been all year. (And frankly was for much of the second half of last year). He's 7 foot 1! I understand they'll double him, but that should open people up for his passing. Part of the problem is him not working hard enough to post up, part of the problem is our guards and wings not doing a good job of feeding it to him, and maybe part of it is bad scheming to figure out ways to get the ball to him, but damn, he's the bell cow! How in the world does he not -- against a team THAT small, despite the TV guy repeatedly insisting that it's somehow harder for bigs to play against smaller players (as if height is a disadvantage in basketball) -- get more touches!? It's ... it's bizarre!

I don't care about anything else right now. Player substitutions and rotations, lack of coordination, whatever. You've got a potential All-American center. He should be the rock of your team -- it should be a no-brainer to get the ball to him, and if they double, let him find the open guy. I have no idea what's going on, but every possession should be about getting the ball to him, until the defense is so distracted that it completely opens other people up.

If that's not possible, than Dickinson really simply isn't that good a player, and we'll need to acknowledge that.

I felt last night Dickinson just wasn't putting in a great effort, especially after he got frustrated early on with the double teams.  He can't do that if Michigan is going to be successful this year.  Yes, the PG needs to do a better job with the entry passes.  But there are games where he's going to need to work his butt off to get points.  Last night was one of those and I just didn't see it from him.

The most troublesome thing about this game and the past games is the rotations that Juwan is using. I can understand the difficulty in learning a NBA system, especially for very young players. But Michigan is using a 6-7 man rotation at times..max 8. Outside of Houstan and Diabate, no other freshman is getting consistent minutes. Houstan's minutes are extreme and unwarranted. Meanwhile, Bufkin and Collins are in for a stretch, never to be seen again.

Jones is absolutely awful on the court. He can't handle ball pressure at all. He can't get to the rim, he struggles to get the team into the offense and he is a foul machine. I struggle to think of a worst point guard at Michigan over the past 8+ years. Where is Zeb Jackson? Collins and Barnes should be eating those minutes.

We need two more guards even if Jones improves, the young guys being cheerleaders isn't going to help accomplish that. If we had another perimeter wing, Caleb wouldn't have to play so many minutes. If you see him, give him a hug and tell him he's doing great, maybe it will boost his confidence.

Meh.  I've watched enough college basketball to know this: Talented teams are talented and they figure it out more often than not.  Every year, college hoops teams are a new chemistry experiment.  Sometimes they click right out of the gate; sometimes, the replacement pieces from last year don't fit exactly, and it takes some tinkering and some gelling to get it right.  You give it til about a month after Christmas.  If January 25 rolls around and you've got Northwestern giving you the business, you might have trouble.  It's tempting to get nervous when your team is threatening to lose to D-II transplants while others are cruising, but it tends to be less meaningful than it appears.

That was reminiscent of a Tommy Amaker team on a bad night, a godawful mess. The team has three D-1 basketball players at the moment: Brooks, Diabate, and Dickinson. The maturity of last year's team makes the shambolic quality of this unit appear all the worse. Fortunately, there's a lot of season left.

I mean, what else needs to be said:

DeVante' Jones playing the entire second half, despite never attempting a single shot of any kind and turning it over five times is ugly. Refusing to play Collins in that latter 20 minutes when Jones was giving you nothing offensively was the most befuddling decision Juwan Howard made tonight.

How do you shoot 100% from the field for the first 8 minutes of the game, against the number 205 team in the nation...and trail?  Because you turned it over 9 times!

Jones has to go to the bench.  Frankie looked much better, at least he can get to the rim, and we can be developing him for the future.  Johns is a hot mess, also has to go to the bench.  And your All-America center has a 7 inch height advantage on the tallest opposing starter...and gets up six shots the entire game??  That is an indictment of either Hunter, the point guard, the coach, or all of the above! Play the freshmen, all of them, more, except for Houstan who should play less.  Play Zeb also when he gets healthy.  Juwan looks like he whiffed on Jones, big-time.

Jordan2323

November 25th, 2021 at 5:31 AM ^

My overall thoughts: Ugly, ugly game for Michigan.
Collins should be starting right now over Jones. Let Jones come in off the bench and get a feel for the program with less pressure. Frankie is an energizer bunny. He will have his moments where you have to pull him too.

Brooks should obviously be where he is at but because of the poor rotation he’s playing way to many minutes and trying to be offense and defense specialist. Brooks played 40 minutes ffs, no reason for that unless it’s a huge ass game.

Houstan should be at the four right now or on the bench and coming in with the reserves. Either we need to go with Diabate at the four with Hunter or play Houstan there. Johns should be coming off the bench for a spark as well.

Covered the four above. Dickinson is struggling to gel with this new team but he has had some stretches with Diabate that look like this will be a good tandem

If you aren’t gonna start Bufkin, at least give him some good minutes. The under classmen will have to lead this team this year.

The team really lacks serious fundamentals. More worrisome than that is the overall team body language. They look like they are just out  there most of the time. Right now there is no Chaundee or Franz to pump people up other than Moussa. T Will looks like he’s going through the motions. The most animated I’ve seen Houstan so far was over a few calls. Hell, he barely walks off the free throw lane when another player hits a free throw to congratulate them.  The bench looks lethargic. The coaches just sit there all game long.

The more these upper classmen struggle and if the record gets worse, the talented freshmen will start to grumble. That is your bench this year.  They didn’t sign here to wait until year three to play.

Did the team and staff star gaze and look at their preseason projections and half ass through October practices? We really need to see what Zeb can bring to the table, it’s unfortunate he has been hurt, perfect opportunities wasted so far. Nunez shouldn’t step on the floor until garbage time. We have plenty of bricklayers.

With the current rotation the way it is, i see us at 17-14 this year. If he makes corrections and let’s the young ones step up and makes the upper classmen more role players for calming influence, the team will be much better than that. I think we will know more by the time we get to the bigten, perhaps sooner. If NC and SDSU mop the floor with us, it may force a change.

What was with the early part of season contract extension for Howard? I thought we always wait until after the season? It had some real MSU Mel Tucker vibe to it (speaking of timing only). Hell, Harbaugh always has to wait until the end of the season. It’s not like in 2016 they came in after a 6-0 start and was like Jim you are getting an extension.

Im in for the long haul but as stated throughout this post, there are serious issues and I have some serious concerns they’ll be addressed by the current lineups. Free the young guns!!!

Tarleton scored 22 points off of turnovers. Which also, obviously, means we lost scoring opportunities on those possessions. Sloppy. Or to steal an adjective from above, discombobulated.

November 25th, 2021 at 12:28 PM ^

Wow, where do you start?

Jones is too slow and can't handle pressure. Give Frankie and maybe Zeb more minutes and see what develops. He is giving them nothing right now.

John's is a mess and needs to come off bench.

Why is Nunez seeing any minutes and why didn't Bufkin play? I think he can help with spot minutes. They need better 3 pt shooting, he could help a bit I think.

Lastly, Williams is a man without a position IMO. Too small to play the 4, not good enough offensively to play the 3. Dude can't make shots, can't break people down off dribble.

Just one man's opinion. Got a lot to work on to even be a tourney team I'm afraid.
