Is the Stanford-y stuff (odd formations, shifts, TEs everywhere) still in the playbook?

I'd like to start by saying that everyone who posts in this thread is going to be a cuck, a Social Justice Warrior, a rape apologist, a hysterical McCarthyite, a witch hunter, a witch, a morally panicked man-hating lesbian, a self-hating man, a misogynist, a cocker spaniel, or a Russian bot.

Call me old fashioned, but I liked it better when it was made of wood and chicken wire.

Get the ball to Jimmy Chitwood.

09/04/2018 - 7:37pm Most people most of the time…

Most people most of the time interpret messages as simple. Here, the AD is sending the message that sexual assault is bad and that working to stop it is good.

Is there nuance or sophistication to this? No. Is there virtue signaling involved? Sure. Does any of this make the message unworthy of sending? No.

09/04/2018 - 4:24pm FWIW, Geoff at the Hoover…

FWIW, Geoff at the Hoover Street Rag expressed nearly my exact current sentiments about college football at the end of his piece.  Being wrapped up in it emotionally seems not just self-defeating but like an abjugation of adulthood.  The state of our country demands our attention elsewhere if we have the time and energy to give it.

This isn't to say that I am above being fixated on the outcome of a Michigan season.  But that sure seems like something I ought to strive for.

09/02/2018 - 12:44am That’s an exaggeration, but…

That’s an exaggeration, but I take your point. Newsome’s injury hurts a lot given the recruiting failures at that position.

I’m with you on this. The most salient criticism to be made of Harbaugh is that he failed to recruit tackles well enough to survive the loss of Newsome.

09/01/2018 - 11:44pm Good news: you would only…

Good news: you would only need to change the outcome of a few plays for Michigan to win the game (assuming everything else stayed the same, which I realize is unlikely).

Bad news: ND looked like a better program almost top to bottom. It’s worth noting that they were also at home at night, which should temper our reactions to this.

Further thoughts: I’m more bored than frustrated with the program at this point. Life is too short to fret about a game. There is a world of other things to engage with.

https://www.cleveland.com/osu/2018/07/everything_ohio_state_coach_ur_8.htmlMeyer was much broader in his denial than simply saying there was no felony. He said, “there was nothing” when asked about 2015.

I would kiss the sports media executive who realized that, for most of us, the fact that Michigan is playing Notre Dame is all the narrative that's needed.

08/28/2018 - 3:42pm The piece notes that few…

The piece notes that few people believe his job is at stake this year.  It instead says the program is at a crossroads, which seems reasonable (even though I don't agree).

08/24/2018 - 7:01pm Meyer has a remarkably hard…

Meyer has a remarkably hard time saying what he means for the coach of a major college football program. And he apparently has a bad memory too.

Given his job responsibilities, Meyer should probably resign. Or maybe what I described in my first paragraph is hogwash.

Said the Big Ten: Accepting the findings of the investigation required us to eat no more than what we hold to be an acceptable amount of shit.

08/24/2018 - 10:14am But this is ultimately…

But this is ultimately obfuscation. We can be pretty confident that he deleted his messages.

Meyer lied about meeting both Smiths in 2009 when, per Zach, he only met with Zach. He lied to the media in July about his knowledge of the 2015 incident, which he’d in fact monitored. He and his wife almost certainly lied about whether she told him about her text exchanges with Courtney Smith. He lied multiple times.

Meyer is a dishonest man. And OSU is okay with that.

08/24/2018 - 9:55am But the simplest explanation…

But the simplest explanation for that, given Meyer’s discussion of changing settings to delete texts more than a year old, is that his phone was not set for that previously and that he intentionally deleted his messages.

I'd caution anyone from reading too much into the grammatical plane crash that is that tweet.  Who knows what his gripe is at this point?

I’m going to be in the bathroom vomiting all day if anyone needs me.

Seriously, though, this is some brazen, weapons grade rhino shit. OSU has disgraced itself this week.

I'm with you.  There's no point in rooting for Michigan if the Wolverines are effectively just the blue team.  There has to be more than that.

You know that Colin Kaepernick is not an OSU recruit, right?

It’s not clear who your target is unless it’s “the blacks” generally.

The Smith scandal is not going to hurt OSU on the field, but that’s also not what’s important.

08/23/2018 - 1:15pm The intellectual and moral…

The intellectual and moral anemia of the investigation is more obvious than what Meyer's fate should have been.  We are to believe that Shelley Meyer told Courtney Smith that Zach Smith scared her but that Shelley simultaneously doubted the allegations enough to refrain from passing them on to Urban.  The report also notes that Meyer's interest in deleting his old text messages would usually demonstrate consciousness of guilt but then promptly drops that thread.  The report might as well have started with "Dear idiots, here are our findings..."

You're correct re: Nassar.  I was thinking of their football and basketball teams.

Yes.  Penn State is in a class of its own.  They had reason to know Sandusky was raping young men in their facilities.  And they kept allowing him to bring young men to those facilities.*  That is a quintessential example of enabling.

*Please forgive my italics yelling.  That detail of the PSU scandal still causes me a bit of rage.

08/23/2018 - 11:45am The last sentence captures…

The last sentence captures my state of mind too.  My tolerance for people allowing those in power to behave badly in a realm that effects me whether I like it or not is exhausted daily.  But I can choose to distance myself from college football, which is half a farce.  And I am leaning unhappily in that direction.

08/23/2018 - 9:55am Putting aside what Meyer’s…

Putting aside what Meyer’s fate should have been, the investigation itself was feeble and cowardly.

The part about him not lying at media day is exceptionally flagrant bullshit.

Am I missing something? He also strongly implied in his post-administrative  leave Twitter statement that he did report the 2015 incident.

Putting aside what his punishment should have been, everyone should be able to agree that Meyer is thoroughly and almost prodigiously full of shit.

I’d like some action on Meyer saying that nobody takes domestic violence more seriously than he does.

I'm hearing credible reports that, at the very least, Urban Meyer's dog is in the clear.  Everyone seems to agree that he is a very good boy and that, while he thinks he's people, he does not understand human language well enough to be held accountable here.  He did pee in a closet in March of 2016, but the Meyers had failed to let him outside for long enough that this was inevitable.

Stay away from this stuff!  The salesman tells you you'll be "bouncing like a jackrabbit," that your wife will think you're a new man, and that "all your problems are over."  But then it does nothing but make you sick to your stomach.  And when you take it back, the bastard says, "Sorry dude, must be something really wrong with you."  And this is the same lying scumbag who sold you three kilos of the junk just a week ago...

Or, I mean, this is what I imagine would happen.  I really have no idea.

Are you not supposed to do that?

I think the rules should be enforced here. But I can think that and also think this violation  - if it is one - is trifling in the grand scheme of things.

08/10/2018 - 10:20pm This seems laughably stupid…

This seems laughably stupid with all that’s going on in sports and the country generally. The rules are the rules. I’m not arguing for a free pass. But I can’t bring myself to think of this as significant.

If and when that commentary comes, I will spring for vomit bags for the whole blog.

08/08/2018 - 10:45am I'm more sympathetic to your…

I'm more sympathetic to your position in some instances than you might imagine, but it just isn't realistic.  It's particularly unrealistic in the case of a coach for a major college football program.  A coach doesn't only teach his position players and recruit.  People are going to see him as a representative of the program and the school whether that's fair or not.  If we stick with my example - a guy who gets into bar fights - fans of the team and people in the community would very understandably look to the head coach or AD and say, "Can you please explain to us why you're employing this maniac?"

Most college head coaches - maybe all of them - claim to stand for something more than winning football games.  It's fair to hold them to their own standard.

08/08/2018 - 10:22am This is the question that I…

This is the question that I hope reporters press the next time they talk to Meyer.  I can imagine a a set of facts that made retaining Smith acceptable, but as you ask, why was he fired if those potential facts are reality?

08/08/2018 - 10:19am The argument is that a zero…

The argument is that a zero tolerance approach to DV - including zero tolerance for retaining abusers as employees - would have an overall dampening effect on the rate of DV.  Potential abusers would fear for their jobs in a way that they haven't in the very recent past, which would hopefully cause at least some of them to refrain from violence.

It's not an entirely private issue.  I'm sure you'd agree that a head coach should fire an assistant who is regularly assaulting patrons at local bars.  There isn't much difference between that and DV.

Firing might Zach Smith might not have helped Courtney Smith. I don't know if it would have, but the the stronger argument is what I stated in my first paragraph.

Four months from now, ESPN’s GameDay will run a glowing if somber piece about OSU “overcoming” this hardship to contend for a Big Ten title. Every winning coach is a hero.
