That makes sense.  Saying we have to have football in particular doesn't.  The Israelis hardly lack fit soldiers, and they don't play American football.

Is there anything worse than seeing a brand damaged?  The world can be a cruel place...

07/16/2018 - 3:09pm A self-centered take:

A self-centered take:

The revision of the site makes me wonder whether I'm officially not young anymore.  It confuses me.  I find it hard to use.  I dislike the way it looks.

But then again, I don't use words like "lit" or "swag" or "hype" (or at least, with respect to the latter, not as an adjective).  Perhaps the new site is meant for a younger generation, a generation that longs to pay attention to everything and nothing at once.  Maybe my dislike of the new site is irrelevant.

07/11/2018 - 11:16pm I hope we can all agree that…

I hope we can all agree that families being separated for fundamentally political reasons is sad.

07/11/2018 - 11:09pm FWIW, I’m good as long as…

FWIW, I’m good as long as Brian doesn’t have to sell a gay fella to a cake...or something like that.

07/11/2018 - 10:27pm Johnny’s in the basement…

Johnny’s in the basement mixin’ up the medicine/I’m on the pavement thinkin’ ‘bout the government.

07/02/2018 - 2:43pm I don't mean to pass these…

I don't mean to pass these off as remotely original thoughts, by the way.

07/02/2018 - 2:40pm I agree with all of this too…

I agree with all of this too.  I also think, though, that we can say that the internet and cable news have allowed us to escape from opposing viewpoints or even a shared reality in a way that we couldn't, say, in 1972 (which had plenty of it's own division, so I'm not suggesting there is any panacea).  There was a lot to be said for having someone like Walter Cronkite, someone generally taken to be telling the truth by most of the American public (or so I believe!) when he gave a report.

07/02/2018 - 2:35pm I agree with all of that.  I…

I agree with all of that.  I should have been more specific.

I think a depression or a war that taxed us to the extent that WWII did would likely have a focusing effect that erased some of our divides.  For good or for bad, people living in the equivalent of Hoovervilles likely wouldn't care much about whether a Christian baker had to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple.  But none of this is to say that having a depression or a war would be worthwhile.

The best we can hope for as far as the U.S. becoming more united is likely the change in political beliefs that will seemingly come with long term changes in demographics.  Civil wars (and perhaps we're in a civil cold war) usually end when one side dominates the other.  Maybe here our cold war will eventually end - or at least lessen - because the ranks of one side are disproportionately thinned by old age.

07/02/2018 - 1:16pm I wish this were not the…

I wish this were not the case, but you are probably right.  Divides like ours are usually bridged - if they are bridged - by catastrophes.

07/01/2018 - 10:49pm James can sign wherever he…

James can sign wherever he wants, of course.

But I don’t think this is good for the league. The NBA is star-driven, yes, but the teams need to have somewhat consistent personalities.  Stars jumping from city to city as much as they have recently makes the idea of rooting for a particular franchise seem somewhat silly. And I have to believe that isn’t good for keeping people as fans of the sport over the long run.

I miss the days when Seth would call me and read the board's posts to me in a posh English accent.  That was nice.

06/21/2018 - 10:41pm Mo!!!! That’s great!

Mo!!!! That’s great!

06/19/2018 - 4:58pm Does anyone do anything…

Does anyone do anything privately anymore?

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, Mean Joe, but those are the ghosts of koalas who are stuck in purgatory.

This is great stuff as always.  Thanks, Matt!

06/13/2018 - 1:42pm I prefer the old one by a…

I prefer the old one by a mile.  I'm generally more interested in the board than anything else, and the board is harder to use for reasons that have already been listed by others.  The occasional crashes of the old site were preferable to the constant (as of yet) inhospitality of the new board.

06/12/2018 - 4:27pm It would be interesting to…

It would be interesting to know whether site traffic is down generally or whether people are just posting less.  It may only be the latter, in which case it may not be a priority to fix it.

06/11/2018 - 2:22pm We posters also have to…

We posters also have to realize that we are (I think) only a small percentage of the blog's readers.  I'm largely ignorant of this stuff, but I believe a view of the blog that includes posting generates no more money than a view of the blog that does not include posting.  The redesign of the blog might cause a net increase in views even if it decreases visits to the blog by long-time posters.  I vaguely remember Brian saying at the end of the Hoke era that another blogger had reminded him that posters aren't any more valuable as customers than readers who don't post.

06/09/2018 - 4:24pm I’ve done the same as far as…

I’ve done the same as far as checking the blog less.

06/09/2018 - 3:40pm I’d like to be able to see…

I’d like to be able to see the board on the front page. I’d also like the sticky threads to be moved (at least at some point). I’d like the threads to look essentially as they did before. The new threads are harder to follow.

06/08/2018 - 3:50pm Yes to this.  Please call…

Yes to this.  Please call that number if you need to.  Things really can get better.  Terrible situations are often more temporary than they appear.

06/06/2018 - 10:31pm I prefer the old site all…

I prefer the old site all the way around so far.

Now, please remove yourself from my lawn.

06/06/2018 - 7:23pm I couldn’t bring myself to…

I couldn’t bring myself to imagine him leaving for the NBA. This is just about the best of news.

06/03/2018 - 4:53pm My guesses:

1. That one fella who’s not starting;
2. The guy with the hair;
3. The player who was really good in high school but whose college career hasn’t gone the way he’d hoped.

05/30/2018 - 4:58pm Great!

I think another year of Beilein coaching is just what Mr. Matthews needs.

05/25/2018 - 12:56pm The only difference between me and those billionaires... that they have about a billion dollars more than I do.

05/23/2018 - 1:20pm I used to invest only in pork belly futures

But the commies shut down the market.

05/21/2018 - 10:44am That's fantastic

Is it too late for me to sign up to be on the team? My mom will bring orange slices to practice.

05/16/2018 - 5:05pm I'm not sure how unpopular this is, but...

...I was not a fan of people disliking RR for yelling, using the word "ain't," and/or considering nacho dip a delicacy.  He was hired to coach football (which he admittedly failed at), not teach Emily Post's rules of etiquette.

05/15/2018 - 4:23pm As Muhammad Ali said...

It ain't braggin' if you can do it.

05/15/2018 - 11:54am Yes indeed

It's on between the Proctor & Gamble Variety Hour and the Jack Benny Show.

05/15/2018 - 10:24am I am for this

Let's go for another twenty years.

05/12/2018 - 8:21pm It’s chocolates and a gift card for my mom

I don’t expect anyone to give me anything, though, which is typical.

05/11/2018 - 6:13pm It's hard not to like this guy a lot so far

I doubt he'll see the field this year, but you have to admire the way he's handling himself.

05/10/2018 - 11:33am That's my take too

I don't like this conversation, because it seems silly to nitpick either guy.  They are/were both remarkable players.  But Jordan was the mentally toughest athlete I think I've seen.  He was, as you say, just an absolute killer.

05/09/2018 - 8:49pm Edit

Never mind. I like ice cream.

05/09/2018 - 8:48pm I didn’t see the report you did & can’t vouch for the details

But the bias response team is real.

05/02/2018 - 1:00pm I just hope everyone has given serious thought... the cooties outbreak that is going to come from this.

04/30/2018 - 9:54pm This is the future of all sports

There will only be playoffs. And thanks to the magic of CGI, everyone’s favorite team - regardless of which team that is - will win the championship in dramatic fashion every year. Any word to the contrary will be dismissed as fake news.

04/30/2018 - 7:24pm We’re going to need Casey Stengel…

04/27/2018 - 1:39pm The Fog of War with Robert McNamara

It's one of the best movies that I've seen of any type.

04/26/2018 - 10:14am "black and white thinking"

He was clearly using that phrase to mean something like "all or nothing" or "lacking in nuance."

04/26/2018 - 9:50am What does this even mean?

04/25/2018 - 6:54pm Hey

Daytonians invented the airplane, invented the electrical starting motor, contributed to the Manhattan project, and helped break the Enigma code (the second time).  We've just had a bit of a letdown these last 75 years or so.

04/22/2018 - 9:32pm I don’t think it’s clear he meant to imply...

...race was an issue. I read his statement to mean that the police can’t say he’s mentally ill without a doctor evaluating him (which isn’t true, of course, if we’re just talking about an officer saying it seems like he needs counseling).

04/22/2018 - 9:29pm ?

He may not be able to appreciate the effects of his actions. Or maybe he’s unable to appreciate the seriousness of those effects. It’s a malfunction either way. He should try to take responsibility for his actions as best he can, but his ability to do that may be compromised.

04/22/2018 - 9:22pm That statement was not what I’d hoped for

It’s not clear at all that this situation has been resolved. He almost certainly still needs counseling.

04/19/2018 - 4:13pm recruiting a PG for 2019

That seems a little odd given that Z, Brooks, and DeJulius are all slated to be on the team that year.  I have to assume one of those guys has privately revealed to Coach Beilein that he is a replicant and that Coach fears he'll be "retired" before 2019.

04/16/2018 - 3:23pm Fun facts about Manute Bol

He had more career blocked shots than points, but he also once hit six three-pointers in a half.

He supposedly killed a lion.

He spent much of his retirement trying to raise money to help his native Sudan.  This included becoming licensed as a jockey for publicity purposes.
